Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (3 Viewers)

Billy Idol, same as Clapton.

It seems kind of silly that Billy Idol is eligible when his lead guitarist is American, but the Cure wouldn't be eligible (at least for some stuff) because the drummer (1 of 5 band members) was born in France, as an example. Regardless, just want to understand the rule.
If it’s a solo artist, only the artist him/herself matters. If it’s a band, the official members of the band matter. Session players/hired guns don’t matter.

From what I’ve gathered… if the band’s name is just an individual member of the band (such as Billy Idol), go by the individual named, and other musicians are just treated like session musicians.

If the band’s name refers to more than one individual (such as the Cure) or includes the backing band as a separate group (such as the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), then look to the collective members of the group.

The playlists are always in the first post.

Super-sick today, so unless things change quickly and significantly, I'm not going to be able to post the "fun" stuff I'd hoped to do today.

I do have one fun thing, though! @Mt. Man came to the thread late and has been posting great commentary on each of the rounds. Now he has put together his own list! It won't be part of the official rankings, but here it is. Here's his playlist for your listening pleasure.

Ignore the links in the following, as I'm told some aren't good. This list is in opposite order of preference - i.e., his #1 song is the Journey one.

31. Volcano - Jimmy Buffett
30. Goodbye - Night Ranger
29. - Tool [Selector note: This is from Undertow , so should qualify still]
28. Kings and Queens - Aerosmith
27. Come Again - Damn Yankees
26. That's Good - Devo
25. Cold Shot - Stevie Ray Vaughn
24. Sorry About the Weather - Mark Curry [Selector note: Though probably not the Mark Curry you think about]
23. We Walk in the Dream - Live
22. The Good Life - Weezer
21. Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) - Styx
20. Nada - The Refreshments [Selector note: There's apparently a Swedish band with the same name. Link should help]
19. Hands All Over - Soundgarden
18. I'll Be Here Awhile - 311
17. If I'd Been the One - .38 Special
16. Stop - The Dirtbombs
15. Amazed - The Offspring
14. Hope -Descendents
13. Hello Hooray - Alice Cooper
12. Mosquito Song - Queens of the Stone Age
11. You Got Lucky - Tom Petty
10. Hitchin' A Ride - Green Day
9. Don't Follow - Alice in Chains
8. Where the River Flows - Collective Soul
7. You'll Accomp'ny Me - Bob Seger
6. All Through the Night - Cyndi Lauper
5. Overjoyed - Stevie Wonder
4. Lost Cause - Beck
3. Alive - Pearl Jam
2. My Best Friend's Girl - The Cars
1. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) - Journey

If I'm running the next one, we'll have the same rules as for this exercise. I think after some growing pains that eventually we all kinda got it. Dr. O et al. have done a good job of reconfirming all of it above. Also, as with this countdown, we won't bar anyone from having more than one song on their list from any particular artist. I assume most will limit themselves as they have in this one, but it's up to the selector on that.

All that being said, this is not my thing, and if anyone else would like to run the next one, I can cede the reins to him/her!

so our next one is UK only - instead of Europe?

Happy to see another Collective Soul song :hifive:

Fyi: There are no bad songs on that album.

Dr O mentioned British Isles, including Ireland.

Of Ireland, only Northern Ireland part of UK, but seems like all of Ireland eligible in what Dr O is doing (so, a bit broader than UK, but not all of Europe).

But I defer to whatever rules folks running this want to do and just relaying what I’ve picked up from the posts.

Spreadsheet updated to include round 6 from Yesterday.

I believe (don't quote me, I'm just an intern) that these are the current standings for the one hit wonder category. I haven't figured out an easy way to determine this so just scanned the results. There is a good chance that I missed one. Anyway for now, here's how I see it.

Song TitleArtistPoints
SurrenderCheap Trick62
Cat's in the CradleHarry Chapin49
Let's Stay TogetherRev. Al Green49
If I Had a BoatLyle Lovett47
Return of the Grievous AngelGram Parsons47
Waiting RoomFugazi47

and to hopefully clarify what I mean by one-hit-wonder, as of now, Cheap Trick only has one song selected (Surender) and it has more points than any other song that is also th eonly song from that artist's catalog that has been selected. Cat's In the Cradle is the only Chapin song that has been picked, etc.

Finally listened to yesterdays' playlist, and I can say that it is the first one where I liked-to-loved each song on there. Fantastic round! :pickle: My closest call was Tori Amos, as that's the type of vocal that's usually nails on a chalkboard for me, but I really enjoyed the piano part and the other instrumentation, so I focused on that.

Of those I already knew, there are way too many favorites to name, so I'd just like to call out Lucinda Williams ("Righteously"). She was on my short list, and this is one of the songs I'd considered, so I'm happy she got a mention. Another special shout-out to "Windy" by The Association, a song I hadn't heard or thought of in ages and was a nice surprise. Cool to see some non-obvious EWF, Otis, and Sly songs, too.

Lots of new-to-me songs, and again I liked all of them! My new favorites included Spoon's "I Summon You" - Spoon is more miss than hit for me usually, but this was a direct hit. The Anastacia song was great in its genre, which is one I don't listen to much of. Another favorite I didn't know was "Ripple" by the Grateful Dead. I know, I know. I recognized the title and was sure that once I heard it, I'd recognize it. I didn't. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Our #5s tomorrow will include ten new artists! I'm surprised still to see so many newbies, but it's also cool.

We have a triple-up of one of our top artists, all of which are new songs from this artist. Going into our #5s, we still have two of our top 15 songs that have not been revealed. Could one or two of these songs be in that duo?

We also have additional selections for two of our top current contenders for "one-hit wonder." And two songs that will make Uruk cry. And OH mining another 1920s obscurity from the Anthology of American Folk Music.

Favorite new-to-me songs from #6:

Righteously -- Lucinda Williams (Simsarge). Williams' voice is a tough one for me to deal with, but here it's very well suited to the arrangement and the material. Vigorous and plaintive.
History Lesson -- Part II -- The Minutemen (Scorchy). I'm generally not a fan of self-referential "this is what we did" songs, but this one never fails to hold interest.
I Summon You -- Spoon (Hov34). Great melody and beat.

Not be pedantic, but I think we were going for British Isles.

Can we get an official ruling on artists coming from the Chagos Archipelago?

Not in the British Isles. You're looking for the Commonwealth Edition. I think it's two doors down.

ANNOUNCE:

I'm not going to post the #5s until Monday. That will allow (1) falguy to catch up on playlists, (2) Hawks64 to recover from illness, we hope, and (3) a very pleasing Monday-Friday #5-#1 countdown next week, capping it off on Friday!

Tomorrow I'll post the answers to some earlier teasers (those that won't spoil anything to come), maybe some additional teasers or analysis, and if I have time, a surprise fun(?) exercise.

Today I'm watching soccer and then going to a winery to make a wreath while drinking wine. :)
I'm still alive but good lord...you don't want this year's flu. Feels like my kids just started going to kindergarten again, it's ridiculous.

I'm better today. Oddly enough, since last week, I've been sick...every other day. Wed/Fri/Sun felt awful. Thurs/Sat/today just fine. Wtf?
