Real smart of you to post this before you share my Limp Bizkit pick tomorrow. What she said. Some good, some "Really?!?" moments. Also found some unlistenable.![]()
What's been fantastic, among other things, about the discussion today is that no one has said, "How could you pick that?" It's all been very positive, and I hope it will stay that way in terms of specific commentary.
TP, TP & HB, SN & TP. Wait, no Mudcrutch?
Besides my choice, IMO Refugee is the best of this round. I limited myself to one song per artist, but cheated a little to count Tom Petty, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty as different artists. It didn't make my list, since it isn't my favorite Heartbreakers song, but it is a great song IMO.
MAC_32:
Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival
falguy:
Stand By Me - Ben E. King
Eephus:
The Humpty Dance - Digital Underground
Hov34:
Float On - Modest Mouse
These are my other favorites from this round, though there are several songs in this round that are new to me that I will have to listen to.![]()
There's going to be charts???Sorry to anyone who wanted to submit and didn't meet the deadline, but I need to cut this off. I'll include Doug B's selections, but yesterday I had put all of this data into a billion different charts to look at a billion different ways and tabulated it all in different documents, and re-doing all of that work is turning out to be a huge PITA. I can't bear the thought of doing it a third or fourth time if more lists come in.![]()
Not to be a downer, but I so miss wikkid in a thread like this.
There's an entire soundtrack album of good stuff. Besides the two Steinman songs, there's some Nicks, Ry Cooder, and other juicy goodies.
Never heard this before - this has been my earworm for the last hour - can't decide if that's good or bad.
Your song was my favorite that I’d never heard before of the 31’s.I see that no one gave any love to my selection this round, which is just fine. It's one of those songs that I can always rely on to make me feel good.
Shout out to tanner and all his aliases, he introduced me to it in a late night "I post a song from my spotify list and you rate it thread".

The list is here: https://forums.footballguys.com/thr...h-of-middle-aged-dummies.806810/post-24286168. The link is also in the first post.Hey K4, when you aren't getting crushed by lamp shades, can you please post all the #31's and page1?
I see the spotify link, but it would be nice to list them also. thanks

I just played this one for my daughter. She said exactly what was mentioned earlier. Bonnie Tyler and Meatloaf had a baby. She loved it.

listening to the 31's. What a great pick here!
You can always tell a Jim Steinman song, they all have that (for lack of a better term) Steinman "style". Bonnie Tyler and Meat Loaf are the best known Steinman "front acts", but there are others - Taylor Dayne, Air Supply, Celine Dion, Pandora's Box - all sorts of people have done a touch of Steinman. (Note that there are some that probably shouldn't have gone the Steinman route - Barbara Streisand and the Everly Brothers leap to mind.)I just played this one for my daughter. It was a cool song I hadn't heard before. Problem was Dr. O and rock put up great songs I hadn't heard before.I see that no one gave any love to my selection this round, which is just fine. It's one of those songs that I can always rely on to make me feel good.

Dave Grohl's renditions of this classic are spectacular.listening to the 31's. What a great pick here!
I am religious, but I wasn't going to talk much on this selection. This isn't the thread for it.O Come to the Altar - Elevation Worship: Ok, so I'm not religious at all probably best described as agnostic, but for some reason I love Christian Rock. I really can't explain it. I play a certain group from Illinois that I won't say for fear of spoiling/spotlighting when I clean the house and my wife just shakes her head and laughs at me. It started in college when I'd study - I'd play a certain "Collection" from an 80s Christian artist (again, won't spoil) and it pumped me up - still does.
That was me. It wasn't intentional, but now that you mention it I find it humorous and not coincidental that the two guilty pleasures I cited were 80's rock songs. I anticipate a theme coming as we move forward.I Hate Myself For Loving You - someone picked this as a guilty pleasure, but I don't see any guilt in liking this kickass rock song.
A note about landry's Funkadelic selection. Most of Funkadelic's Warner Brothers material is not on Spotify because of the many legal/financial mistakes George Clinton made over the years. This includes the original 15-minute album version of (Not Just) Knee Deep. What's on the playlist is a Digital Underground reworking, which is awesome as well, but may not be what landry actually drafted.
Another mistake...apologies friends. This one confused me since there was no other Funkadelic version, which makes total sense now. That would be even more difficult than this one. I'm not sure I know other bands' artists that were born in the UK...I'm in!To that point, and not getting into a new exercise when we have a lot to go here, I was thinking of a UK one but Beatles, Stones, Zep not allowed. Something like that. Also had some other, possibly better or possibly worse, ideas.
I thought it was you, but I didn't want to look back, and then I have to go forward again (I realize that is so lazy). I wasn't sure if you considered the song 80's cheese rock, but I've always thought of it as a fun rocker. I love the intro, melody and structure, guitars, drums, and Joan's Ow! It's fun to sing and rock out to.That was me. It wasn't intentional, but now that you mention it I find it humorous and not coincidental that the two guilty pleasures I cited were 80's rock songs. I don't know many Christian rock songs unless you include U2 music. I do love a lot of gospel songs and some hymns. Being religious isn't necessary to enjoy gospel music. It's also my only worship song on this list.....though a top 30 of them would be fun...to me.
I'd probably take it one step further and "eliminate" the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who (and maybe even Kinks and Floyd) to make it more interesting. To that point, and not getting into a new exercise when we have a lot to go here, I was thinking of a UK one but Beatles, Stones, Zep not allowed. Something like that. Also had some other, possibly better or possibly worse, ideas.
You're trying to break my brain, aren't you??I'd probably take it one step further and "eliminate" the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who (and maybe even Kinks and Floyd) to make it more interesting. To that point, and not getting into a new exercise when we have a lot to go here, I was thinking of a UK one but Beatles, Stones, Zep not allowed. One of my picks is sung as a duet, but not by the credited artist.I do love a lot of gospel songs and some hymns. Being religious isn't necessary to enjoy gospel music

or leave everyone eligible, but only one song per artist (I've already started making my top 31 uk list)I'd probably take it one step further and "eliminate" the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who (and maybe even Kinks and Floyd) to make it more interesting. To that point, and not getting into a new exercise when we have a lot to go here, I was thinking of a UK one but Beatles, Stones, Zep not allowed. I remember trying to walk on pool water after seeing this video for the first time way back when.
I'm traveling this week so will be sporadic in commenting (and the promised "commentary to come" may not). Left my headphones home and the wife is sleeping 5' away so I can't even listen to the many I haven't heard, so besides my 70's schmalz pick (love that song) I'm going to go with Magic as my favorite of the bunch - just a great song during a great summer (HS Graduation) . There are a few Cars songs I may like better, but Magic is always welcome when it comes on.
Great start!
I love the Stax label. I look forward to the reveal of this tune. One of my picks is sung as a duet, but not by the credited artist.I do love a lot of gospel songs and some hymns. Being religious isn't necessary to enjoy gospel music
The singers are session singers, essentially. One of the two was a gospel artist who recorded a bunch for Stax Records (which I had never associated with gospel, but they put out a good amount). Additionally, this gospel artist recorded the selected song under another name ... not the name he used while with Stax. I wonder if there was a contract issue of some kind.
I'll uncover all this when the song comes up ... going to be a while yet.
I messed up the description a bit -- the gospel singer is actually singing lead. The other singer is apparently credited as a backup vocalist. Though sometimes the song's credits are listed like "Vocals -- Gospel Singer and Other Singer" as if they have equal footing.I love the Stax label. I look forward to the reveal of this tune.
Or how bout you get to pick only one from each of the "heavies"I'd probably take it one step further and "eliminate" the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who (and maybe even Kinks and Floyd) to make it more interesting. To that point, and not getting into a new exercise when we have a lot to go here, I was thinking of a UK one but Beatles, Stones, Zep not allowed. (not a Floaters cover, it turns outFloat On
)Took me a second when I saw it as wellSoooo I thought you spelled ZZ Top with an extra Z.....imagine my surprise when I clicked on it! I realize now that was the song name anyway![]()

Johnny Marr was not in Modest Mouse when Float On was recorded, so it was eligible.Love the Float On pick. It was briefly on my list but then realized they had a non American member at one point so I tossed them. I wasn’t entirely sure on how strict we were being so I erred on the side of caution whenever I could.
Took me longer than that. I was listening to the song thinking it doesn't sound very much like ZZ Top. Thought maybe it was very early stuff. lolTook me a second when I saw it as wellSoooo I thought you spelled ZZ Top with an extra Z.....imagine my surprise when I clicked on it! Yep, agreed. I wasn’t sure if that exactness on that technical rule when making my list so I tried to make my own rule of- if there was any doubt, the band was out.Johnny Marr was not in Modest Mouse when Float On was recorded, so it was eligible.
That also serves as a way to whittle down your list.Yep, agreed. I wasn’t sure if that exactness on that technical rule when making my list so I tried to make my own rule of- if there was any doubt, the band was out.Johnny Marr was not in Modest Mouse when Float On was recorded, so it was eligible.
Exactly. I had so many songs so any extra help like it must have singing for example was helpful. I still didn’t post a first 5 out because I felt like I had a first 50 out, not 5. Whittling was difficult. That also serves as a way to whittle down your list.
I built my list up to 31 from songs I'd taken in a desert island draft on another board, songs I'd taken in the This Is Their Best Song draft, and my #1 songs from certain artists I really wanted to have on my list. If I'd started with everything I really liked and tried to whittle it down, I would have gone crazy.
