Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (1 Viewer)

Besides my choice, IMO Refugee is the best of this round. I limited myself to one song per artist, but cheated a little to count Tom Petty, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty as different artists. It didn't make my list, since it isn't my favorite Heartbreakers song, but it is a great song IMO.

MAC_32:

Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival

falguy:

Stand By Me - Ben E. King

Eephus:

The Humpty Dance - Digital Underground

Hov34:

Float On - Modest Mouse

These are my other favorites from this round, though there are several songs in this round that are new to me that I will have to listen to.
TP, TP & HB, SN & TP. Wait, no Mudcrutch?

Sorry to anyone who wanted to submit and didn't meet the deadline, but I need to cut this off. I'll include Doug B's selections, but yesterday I had put all of this data into a billion different charts to look at a billion different ways and tabulated it all in different documents, and re-doing all of that work is turning out to be a huge PITA. I can't bear the thought of doing it a third or fourth time if more lists come in. :frown:
There's going to be charts???

I see that no one gave any love to my selection this round, which is just fine. It's one of those songs that I can always rely on to make me feel good.

Shout out to tanner and all his aliases, he introduced me to it in a late night "I post a song from my spotify list and you rate it thread".

Your song was my favorite that I’d never heard before of the 31’s.

My favorite 5 "chalk" songs (songs I'm very familiar with) from Round 31:

Fortunate Son
- Love CCR, If I could have picked just 5 artists to to fill my 31 songs with they would have been one. Although why do I get Nam flashbacks everytime I hear this song?

Refugee - See above concerning Petty. K4 not "embracing" Petty almost made me rage quit this thing j/k

What a Fool Believes - Sweet Jesus is this smoooth

Be My Baby - Nothing makes me happier than hearing The Ronettes - The only good thing about Christmas music starting early is I get to hear my favorite X-Mas song by them (hope that wasn't too spoilery)

Humpty Dance - How can you not love this song!

My Favorite 4 New2Me (songs I wasn't familiar with at all):

Anemone - The Brian Jonestown Massacre:
This, this right here is why I love music drafts on this board. I have had my eyes opened to so many great groups and great songs from you awesome people. Absolutely love this song - I just assumed they were from England. They remind me of another group that I have drafted years ago from Atlanta - I won't say who although I doubt that group made anyone's list. Anyway, thanks.

Lover I Don't Have to Love - Bright Eyes: I'm gazing lovingly at my shoes as I listen to this.

Methamphtamine - Son Volt: Everytime someone drafts or talks about a song from this group I swear I'm going to explore them more and I never do. This time...

O Come to the Altar - Elevation Worship: Ok, so I'm not religious at all probably best described as agnostic, but for some reason I love Christian Rock. I really can't explain it. I play a certain group from Illinois that I won't say for fear of spoiling/spotlighting when I clean the house and my wife just shakes her head and laughs at me. It started in college when I'd study - I'd play a certain "Collection" from an 80s Christian artist (again, won't spoil) and it pumped me up - still does.

It almost made my "New2Me" list but the voice sort of grated on me upon first listen - I'm liking it more and more upon 3rd/4th listens.

Hey K4, when you aren't getting crushed by lamp shades, can you please post all the #31's and page1?

I see the spotify link, but it would be nice to list them also. thanks

There's a link in the first post that takes you to the post with all the 31s. It will be supplemented on each round.

Never heard this before - this has been my earworm for the last hour - can't decide if that's good or bad.
I just played this one for my daughter. She said exactly what was mentioned earlier. Bonnie Tyler and Meatloaf had a baby. She loved it.
You can always tell a Jim Steinman song, they all have that (for lack of a better term) Steinman "style". Bonnie Tyler and Meat Loaf are the best known Steinman "front acts", but there are others - Taylor Dayne, Air Supply, Celine Dion, Pandora's Box - all sorts of people have done a touch of Steinman. (Note that there are some that probably shouldn't have gone the Steinman route - Barbara Streisand and the Everly Brothers leap to mind.)

If your daughter liked this, may I suggest the other Steinman song on the Streets of Fire soundtrack:

Nowhere Fast - Fire Inc.

I totally grooved on it and I was typing the lyrics to it to post here, but it was a lame post and I didn't go through with posting it for posterity. I said I could hear theremin in it -- or a theremin-like effect, anyway. But I didn't post it. So I guess I could really say it's not you, it's me.

Kudos to Tanner for pulling that from somewhere.

It was a cool song I hadn't heard before. Problem was Dr. O and rock put up great songs I hadn't heard before.

I am religious, but I wasn't going to talk much on this selection. This isn't the thread for it.

I have done everything you can in christian music for church and beyond and while this song isn't the flashiest song we have, nor is it even close to the most popular from this specific worship team, to me it encapsulates everything that worship music should be. It's emotional to me just about every time I hear it or, often, play it. I'm glad you liked it.

It's also my only worship song on this list.....though a top 30 of them would be fun...to me.

First off, I like all of the songs that were listed in round 31. I'll take AAA's cue, and pick 5 favorites since there are so many songs. There are several other songs that could also be in the top 5, but I decided to choose these for no reason other than having to make a decision.

My five favorites are:

I Hate Myself For Loving You - someone picked this as a guilty pleasure, but I don't see any guilt in liking this kickass rock song.
Anemone
Fly Me Couregeous
Methamphetamine
Float On

Favorite song I didn't know before:

Lover I Don't Have to Love

That was me. It wasn't intentional, but now that you mention it I find it humorous and not coincidental that the two guilty pleasures I cited were 80's rock songs. I anticipate a theme coming as we move forward.

A note about landry's Funkadelic selection. Most of Funkadelic's Warner Brothers material is not on Spotify because of the many legal/financial mistakes George Clinton made over the years. This includes the original 15-minute album version of (Not Just) Knee Deep. What's on the playlist is a Digital Underground reworking, which is awesome as well, but may not be what landry actually drafted.
:bag: Another mistake...apologies friends. This one confused me since there was no other Funkadelic version, which makes total sense now.

To that point, and not getting into a new exercise when we have a lot to go here, I was thinking of a UK one but Beatles, Stones, Zep not allowed. Something like that. Also had some other, possibly better or possibly worse, ideas.
That would be even more difficult than this one. I'm not sure I know other bands' artists that were born in the UK...I'm in!

I thought it was you, but I didn't want to look back, and then I have to go forward again (I realize that is so lazy). I wasn't sure if you considered the song 80's cheese rock, but I've always thought of it as a fun rocker. I love the intro, melody and structure, guitars, drums, and Joan's Ow! It's fun to sing and rock out to. 🎸 🎸

I'd probably take it one step further and "eliminate" the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who (and maybe even Kinks and Floyd) to make it more interesting.

You're trying to break my brain, aren't you??

I do love a lot of gospel songs and some hymns. Being religious isn't necessary to enjoy gospel music
One of my picks is sung as a duet, but not by the credited artist.

The singers are session singers, essentially. One of the two was a gospel artist who recorded a bunch for Stax Records (which I had never associated with gospel, but they put out a good amount). Additionally, this gospel artist recorded the selected song under another name ... not the name he used while with Stax. I wonder if there was a contract issue of some kind.

I'll uncover all this when the song comes up ... going to be a while yet.

or leave everyone eligible, but only one song per artist (I've already started making my top 31 uk list)

Mrs. Rannous:

Magic - The Cars

I'm traveling this week so will be sporadic in commenting (and the promised "commentary to come" may not). Left my headphones home and the wife is sleeping 5' away so I can't even listen to the many I haven't heard, so besides my 70's schmalz pick (love that song) I'm going to go with Magic as my favorite of the bunch - just a great song during a great summer (HS Graduation) . There are a few Cars songs I may like better, but Magic is always welcome when it comes on.

Great start!
I remember trying to walk on pool water after seeing this video for the first time way back when.

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work.

I love the Stax label. I look forward to the reveal of this tune.

I messed up the description a bit -- the gospel singer is actually singing lead. The other singer is apparently credited as a backup vocalist. Though sometimes the song's credits are listed like "Vocals -- Gospel Singer and Other Singer" as if they have equal footing.

EDIT: And the session guitarist on this song plays guitar and sings lead on another one of my picks. I find all of these cross-pollinating connections endlessly fascinating.

Or how bout you get to pick only one from each of the "heavies"

Love the Float On pick. It was briefly on my list but then realized they had a non American member at one point so I tossed them. I wasn’t entirely sure on how strict we were being so I erred on the side of caution whenever I could.

Johnny Marr was not in Modest Mouse when Float On was recorded, so it was eligible.
Yep, agreed. I wasn’t sure if that exactness on that technical rule when making my list so I tried to make my own rule of- if there was any doubt, the band was out.
That also serves as a way to whittle down your list.

I built my list up to 31 from songs I'd taken in a desert island draft on another board, songs I'd taken in the This Is Their Best Song draft, and my #1 songs from certain artists I really wanted to have on my list. If I'd started with everything I really liked and tried to whittle it down, I would have gone crazy.

Exactly. I had so many songs so any extra help like it must have singing for example was helpful. I still didn’t post a first 5 out because I felt like I had a first 50 out, not 5. Whittling was difficult.
