Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (4 Viewers)

@krista4 This may have been covered in the 500 posts I semi-read last night but what's the plan for reveals over the weekend and holiday?

I personally wouldn't mind a day off to catch up with the playlists.

Ah, thanks for asking as I had meant to see what people would prefer. I'm definitely not going to post on Thanksgiving itself, but I'd kinda prefer to plow through on regular weekends. I'll do whatever the consensus might be, though.

Favorite new-to-me songs from today:

Let the Tears Roll Down -- Marcia Ball (Simsarge) -- beautifully expressive vocal with sympathetic arrangement. Love the use of the harmonica.
In Praise of Bacchus -- Type O Negative (Manster) -- perfectly executed sludge-rock
Bury Me Deep -- Poi Dog Pondering (Neal Cassady) -- love the interplay between the instruments, especially at the beginning
Lonesome, On'ry and Mean -- Waylon Jennings (Landryshat) -- I have heard other versions of this song but not Waylon's. Badass.

Two double-up artists tomorrow, none involving MAC! Who will win the battle of the songs? Actually there are more like 2.5. One is a normal double-up: one artist with two different songs. In the other case, there is an individual who is a primary member of two different bands listed, one of which has two songs listed and the other of which has one.

A song I really liked that I hadn't heard before.

ditkaburgers: Lonely Town - Brandon Flowers

For those of you who weren't in the endless Genrepalooza Radio draft, @ditkaburgers is my daughter. She was bored and underemployed in 2020 so she joined that draft after handling my weekend picks for a few weeks. She really got into it and says it really helped pass the time.

She's less middle aged than the rest of us mugs. Probably less of a dummy too because she doesn't post anymore but I'm glad she submitted her list.

I have a pretty good guess for the 2nd case.

Today's list seems so solid to me. Of the songs I know, there is only one I don't like (note: I do not know any Kenny Chesney songs). My top picks are "Use Me" and "Return of the Grievous Angel," but also giving a special shout-out to "Frankenstein." After seeing Edgar Winter play with Ringo's All-Starr Band last month, I've become a big fan.

So, the good part about making these lists is pretty obvious right? You see a bunch of songs that other people came up with and you think one of four things. 1.) I don't care for that song. 2.) I like that song, always have, always will. 3.) I love that song, haven't heard it in years, that's going into my rotation or 4.) Wow, that's awesome, I've never heard of that song/band before, etc.
Conversely, the bad part about making these lists is the "oh and this and this and this, etc." I don't know about anyone else but I rushed to toss together a list because I knew if I didn't just put something together that I would just go down this giant rabbit hole and never produce a list. And Frankenstein was the first "rabbit hole" song for me because I went down a Ronnie Montrose rabbit hole (in my mind) and I thought about session work, Van Morrison, Edgar Winter Band, Gamma and of course Montrose. Do yourself a favor and listen that album, man that album is amazing and I mean, just check out his wiki page, so much amazing work there. And, again, like The James Gang and The Doobie Brothers and many others, in my mind I thought "yep, I'll get to that one later" but then I never did. However, all that to say I really regret not putting ANY songs on my list from the first Montrose album which was produced by Ted Templeman and engineered by Donn Landee which you all probably all know and remember were so instrumental in those early DLR/Van Halen albums. And of course later on Don Landee created EVH's 5150 studio. Anyway, here's an interesting short bit of an interview with Ronnie Montrose.

I suspect you have it correct.

How about just one list for the weekend. After all. Sunday is football day.

Right? That is why we're here, right?

I'm not sure why I love Type O.....but I do. Peter Steele was (RIP) about as an engimatic front man as there ever was. Bacchus is the Greek God of wine and pleasure......there is debate about the lyrical meaning of this song. I think it's mostly about drunkenly lamenting the loss of a great love, while wandering around Red hook, where Steele was born....dude had a lot of turmoil around the opposite sex and an unhealthy relationship with substances.

Given my #27 if I had a 4th double dip in a row I'd have screamed RIGGED!!!

It makes me happy to see all the talk about Warren Zevon, as he is my all-time favorite artist. He will make an appearance on my list. One of my friends calls me a Zevongelist, because I preach the gospel of Zevon wherever I go. He is musically gifted and lyrically unique. Both Keith Richards and Bob Dylan have listed him as a favorite songwriter. When Zevon was dying of cancer, Dylan heard about it and started covering a few Zevon songs in concert. Zevon said that gesture made terminal cancer almost worth it.

Pretty much everyone knows the Excitable Boy record, which is great and his commercial peak (such as it was). I recommend Sentimental Hygiene, which featured REM as his backing band, and Life'll Kill You, from 1999 as phenomenal albums that most people would never have heard of. The Eponymous first album (technically not really his first) is actually his best.

Worrierking, my screen name, is an obscure Zevon song only available on a live album. It became my wife's nickname for me when I was having some emotional struggles early in our marriage.

Enjoy every sandwich y'all.

That's the "Learning to Flinch" live acoustic, isn't it? That's a killer one start to finish, including that one, Jungle Work, Boom Boom Mancini, Mr. Bad Example, and all of the other more well-known ones. He's a rare artist who could truly be funny in his lyrics, and yeah, he'll make an appearance on my list. He's sorely underrated.

No, no, no. Getting the daily list is like crack... we'll deal with how to handle no more lists in 27 days...

(But whatever @krista4 wants!)

And my, that's super cool this song got a mention, a relatively lesser know song I like that I am pleasantly surprised to see

Rd 29
Jam On It by Newcleus

I don't if others grew up with this particular experience, but:

If the kids in your neighborhood got excited when these items appeared curbside ... if you had to move "the dance floor" off the driveway so your dad could park the car ... if you shopped Chess King for your parachute pants and Genera t-shirts ... then chances are, you have good memories of "Jam On It" :D

Dang. Decisions, decisions.

Of the known:

Of the unknown:

Gold: He Still Loves Me (Just Win)
Silver: Tangled Up in Blue (krista) :bag:
Bronze: Exiled (Manster)

So, Chic....... I think most that haunt these kinds of threads have heard my rants about how underrated they are. How influential they were in both style and sound. How freaking cool they were. About 1/3 of early 80s music owes them, which makes sense since Nile Rodgers seemingly produced damned near every record that came out then. They got slotted as "disco" and that was pretty much that by 1980. But they were much more New Wave than they were stuff like Cerrone. The "skinny-tie" bands should all be sending royalty checks.

This wasn't their biggest radio hit, nor their most influential. But it's my favorite. It has one of the few "real" solo lead vocals on a Chic record and she nails it. Just listen to it when, at around the 3 minute mark, Bernard Edwards turns his bass loose. And when the vocals come back, he goes full Stanley Clarke/John Entwhistle for the rest of the record - make sure your speakers have the bass at safe levels before listening. Plus, Nile plays an actual guitar solo! And there's the always awesome strings-and-piano work going on. Tony Thompson does Tony Thompson things on drums.

Playlist link...apologies on the lateness, Fri-Sun expect it a bit later than normal somewhere around 11/12p CST or possibly even later depending on what I have going on. I'll effort to be as quick as possible.

Note - we are missing - He Still Loves Me (2003), from The Fighting Temptations: Music from the Motion Picture - Beyonce and Walter Williams Sr. because it's not available on Spotify that I can find.

I wrote down notes for each song as I created my list so that I could C&P them when posted.

Several songs on my list are not huge faves for me now, but were at that time of my life. This is one of them and really represents the entire album.

Look forward to listening to todays and yesterdays lists. I only know 8 from today. How pathetic LOL. :bag: Maybe nine if Rock's is a cover I hope it is. LOL.

More Than A Feeling notes: Song debuted at the start of senior year of HS in Burbank. That album was played endlessly at all of our numerous senior parties and Friday nights at Stough park.

That one was on my short-short-short list of favorites to acknowledge, too. IIRC, wikkid loved this song as well.

Just found it. It was the fourth song he shadow-picked in one of Captain Cranks's charity drafts (wikkid was on strike against Joe at the time so only sent his picks to me with the vow I wouldn't share them at the time).

4.xx I Only Have Eyes For You, The Flamingos, Pop

What makes Pop? The moment. The created moment. The moment that consecrates life & music as part of the soundtrack of existence and crystalizes both into a synesthetic element.

Dbop-shbop. With that reverberating in my ears, my heart, my deepest places, I see daylight fade, bright midnight, starry eternity, misty dawn, musky dusk. I see ecstatic forms writhe above and below me. I see yesterday, now and forever. All at the same time and one-by-one at once. And only have eyes for it.

I'm reminded of the moment i realized i could be a songwriter. Having come to "my book" late in life, i was unsure (which i rarely am) at first so i started experimenting in as many musical genres as i could think of. When i was exploring doowop, i wrote a stanza on a whim and was so struck by the beauty & simplicity of it that i could go no further.

Ruby baby
Ruby baby
She smiled at me
Now I can see
No one but Ruby baby

Many times over several years did i go back to build a song around it and find again & again that any addition besmirched, if not insulted, its purity.

I found a way to use it, though. It's in GLASS, my Alice musical. The premise is a successful Manhattan publicist, whose inner life doesnt match her outer, has a date with yet another charming loser - a struggling musician who shoots publicity stills as a sideline - falls asleep at home alone afterward, reading her favorite book and has a wine & Ambien dream where the people and aspects of her life are represented by Alice characters. She ends up on trial @ GLASS, the hottest club in town which is the principal domain of the Queen of Hearts. As she defends her life (in song) she has the Scroogian revelation of her dream and starts to grow, gigantically as she sings until, at the big note, she breaks the GLASS ceiling. It awakens her, only to find that she's just knocked her wine glass over because someone's buzzing. It's the dateboy she's been dreaming about, with bagels & coffee. They play tag, in and out of song, until they find a reason to continue and a closing song.

Part of the tag is that she asks him if he has a stock song to hit on women. He shyly reveals...........Ruby Baby, cept it's Lisa Baby (Alice is Lisa in real life, the Loon in her dream gets her to say "Lisa" over&over until the emphasis changes and becomes "Alice"). So i dont have to fill out the song, yet get to use it for great moment. Pop!

Had two Xmas songs on my list of 60-ish, and ended up cutting them both. This was one and very glad to see this classic get a nod.

Yeah, this exercise made me really think and decide how I wanted to go about it. I decided that I wanted to "reward" my favorite artists and also songs that are very sentimental to me. I have songs that remind me of my wife (several), kids (a couple) and then things like Christmas, which is just a huge holiday in our family. Somewhat spoilerish but I have one other Christmas song on my list because I think it's "better" but this one is my favorite. I listen to it every Christmas Eve sitting around the fire drinking whiskey. And Cole was just a phenomenal talent.
