Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (2 Viewers)

Lots to dig in here. Will likely get back to it after a couple beers and a Michigan win.
Whoah...huge squeak out win. Blake's injury is not good.
Yeah I just switched my avatar from Hutch to Corum last night so I felt a bit guilty for what happened. I felt like Corum was on his way to a 200 yard 3 TD day. I am nervous about next week. OSU is there for the taking but if Corum and Donovan Edwards (back up RB who is also a future NFL back) are both hurt, I don't see how Michigan moves the ball

Quick post on my choice.

I really, really don't like the original version. It's not a very good song to me and I've tried. But Cash's version, at the end of his life, with the video snippets they chose....stunningly powerful. You can feel everything about Johnny Cash in his version. And that damn piano...one note for so long, cutting into you. To see if you can feel.
Gotta disagree. Cash’s cover is very good but I much prefer the NIN original.
Yeah, I know Trent claims the Johnny Cash version is superior too (or at least that's what he says publicly), but I'll take NIN all day.

Yeah. TCU with the walk off FG, Michigan squeaking by IU and OSU in a close one at Maryland (so far)---crazy day but chalk so far.

The two versions are so distinct from one another that I have a hard time thinking of them as the same song.

The bigger mystery is why March of the Pigs was the first single from an album that had Hurt and Closer. Not that there's anything wrong with March of the Pigs, but the other two are among the best songs of the decade.

Team Man in Black over here.

UF lost to Vandy and UK in the same season for the first time in my lifetime (or at least my rooting lifetime). 20 years ago, this would have sent me into a two-day drunk.

The known:

Gold: Georgia on My Mind (AAA)
Silver: Kiss (Dr. O)
Bronze: Brand New Love (Marco)

The unknown:

Gold: I Say a Little Prayer (Pip)
Silver: Beyond (hov)
Bronze: Dark End of the Street (simey)

Speaking as a male over 50, I would take the boob smash over you know what.
I just asked my 54 year old wife which is worse and she said "a colonoscopy is 150X worse (prep included, of course)".

I thought he meant turn your head and cough.
That should have been happening since he was 12......

i think I meant finger in the butt? :bag:

I had “drink” like Hawks

If it's not colonscopy or turn your head and cough, it's gotta be this.

(No drinks yet today, but that will change in a bit.)

No one has selected Moon River yet, right?

Finally listened to the "new-to-me" selections from yesterday and am ready to crown the Guy Clark song as my winner. Surprisingly, though, I found a few gems in genres that aren't really for me, as I enjoyed the Cinderella, Floater, and Rancid songs as well. And in "even less my genre than those" news, the P!nk song was surprisingly listenable.
This is why I'm trying to listen to these blind. Had I known I was listening to 80's hair metal I may have auto-skipped that Cinderella song. About halfway through I said to myself this sounds pretty good...then I alt-tab'd over to see what it was and did a triple take.

Glad you enjoyed some mid 90's punk (y) If you want to dabble in some more from that album I'll steer you towards Maxwell Murder, Roots Radicals, and Journey To The End of East Bay for a 7 minute starter kit before considering cover-to-cover.

Prizes for today's new-to-me songs:

Au: Comfy in Nautica -- Panda Bear (Rockaction)
Ar: Spottieottiedopealicious -- OutKast (Ilov80s)
CuSn: Forgot About Dre -- Dr. Dre ft. Eminem (Ditkaburgers)

In the same tier I have I Do -- Lisa Loeb (Simsarge), but I think I heard it before. I believe I heard it a few times in the '90s on the radio or elsewhere. Was it the second song she played on her SNL appearance (after "Stay," of course)?

Back again after some time off (mostly work >.<) . I’ll see if I can get the 28s done today too.

#29:
Recognized by title alone: 19
Sounded familiar: 2
Didn't know: 14

Selected Favorites:
Homeward Bound - I’ve got to give love to a somewhat deeper cut, especially since I’d rather listen to this than some of their big hits.
You Get What You Give - A song that’s straight-forward but catchy and upbeat. I wasn’t considering it myself, yet I can’t fault the selection at all.
The Warrior - Tough call for the 3rd spot. But a banging 80s song that I occasionally sing along to fits the bill.

Songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Honestly, this section could be longer this time, but I’ll stick to 3 songs like the previous lists
I’ve Got to Use My Imagination - I mean, I know the artist decently well, and this was a decently big hit. But I don’t remember it, so it goes here.
Albatross - CoC is one of those bands that I’ve heard of but never got into. I can’t guarantee this will change that, but we’ll see.
Can’t Hardly Wait - Another song/group that I feel like I should’ve run across but that had eluded me.

@rockaction will be happy to know that during my ban when I was slumming it on that other POS message board I self corrected and properly used e.g.

What did you get your timeout for? I’m sure those heathens didn’t appreciate your proper use. Lost on them, I’ll bet.
0 clue, and it looks like you aren't told any more, as last time at least I got a message with the offending quote. Best I could come up with is excessive snark to either BR or in general in comments about the obsession with tim.

No worries, at least I gained an even better appreciation for this place and the people here after spending a couple weeks on the alternative.

I texted 80s about it, but IMO this sums up that site perfectly. I was interested in a thread because it was a music draft. Cool - that means there's some chill peeps on there too. The theme when I read further?

You are in the car riding out to kill someone. Choose your playlist.

That's the tone of the place in a nutshell.

Mmmhmmm… and I still don’t have a password there. You should go to Steve Hoffman forums when you’re suspended here. They pretty much talk only about music and FFA stuff, but no politics or religion. It’s a good place.

Toxic site imo

Awesome, I think my first song that was a cited as a "new to me" winner

I love the guitar -- sounds like Eddie Hazel. And the Peter Gabriel-era Genesis sample, of course.

1.01 Little Monster - Royal Blood
Don't even start, that could get this thread nuked.

I think I agree with @krista4 that this is a little weaker round. The songs are good, I just think I prefer more stuff from the previous playlists.

3 that I could have and maybe should have chosen

1. Get Up Off That Thing by The Hardest Working Man in Show Business
2. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel (never crossed my mind, thought they were European for some reason)
3. Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters

3 that I am happy to see get a shout out

1. Brand New Love by Sebadoh
2. In the Mood by Glenn Miller
3. Don't Follow by Alice in Chains

So, Chic....... I think most that haunt these kinds of threads have heard my rants about how underrated they are. How influential they were in both style and sound. How freaking cool they were. About 1/3 of early 80s music owes them, which makes sense since Nile Rodgers seemingly produced damned near every record that came out then. They got slotted as "disco" and that was pretty much that by 1980. But they were much more New Wave than they were stuff like Cerrone. The "skinny-tie" bands should all be sending royalty checks.

This wasn't their biggest radio hit, nor their most influential. But it's my favorite. It has one of the few "real" solo lead vocals on a Chic record and she nails it. Just listen to it when, at around the 3 minute mark, Bernard Edwards turns his bass loose. And when the vocals come back, he goes full Stanley Clarke/John Entwhistle for the rest of the record - make sure your speakers have the bass at safe levels before listening. Plus, Nile plays an actual guitar solo! And there's the always awesome strings-and-piano work going on. Tony Thompson does Tony Thompson things on drums.
I saw them open a few years ago for Earth, Wind & Fire, and they just absolutely rocked it.

I missed the Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In selection. It's probably the best segue between one distinct song and another I might have ever heard in my life. That galloping bass and then

Let the sun shine/let the sun shine
Rock, have you seen the Summer Of Soul documentary that came out recently?

5th Dimension played it and there's a really good section on them in the film. They brought in Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr to comment on their performance. It was interesting to hear them talk about how hard it was for them to gain acceptance with black listeners because their records perceived as not being "black" enough (5D did a LOT of MOR pop), and how much that hurt them. Anyway, they performed that song in the doc.
That movie was my favorite of all of 2021, and yes, that bit about 5th Dimension was pretty amazing, and how they just encouraged him to "take 'em to church." The Sly stuff was also excellent.

Smokey, The Spinners, James Carr, Aretha, James Brown, Ray Charles, Kool and The Gang.

Some great R&B/gospel tracks today. R&B day!

Shout out for Kix, one of my favorite heavy metal acts of that particular era. I have a particular fondness for one song off that album that wasn't chosen (yet) and doubtfully will be, but I won't spotlight. It's a great track, IMO.

The Flaming Lips continue to be a band I've never sat with a whole album but always enjoyed the tracks off of The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi. Nothing but  for them. They write deep material but something about their hopefulness in the face of bleak situations brings a smile to my face. Almost always. Because their heart is in the right place.

Lou Barlow sighting today with Sebadoh! Love it.

"Hey Nineteen" makes me crack up. I started a thread about it once. It died mercifully but was about a guy who, during a college national championship game at the local bar, decided to pump us all up by commandeering the jukebox to play Steely Dan. Hardly pump-up music, me and my new chef friend looked at each other and laughed for like ten minutes.

Like, you're watching the national championship game with Cam Newton and you're gonna put Steely Dan on??? Too funny.

"The End's Not Near" is probably my new-to-me favorite.
