Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (1 Viewer)

The two SL23s are hard for me to pick between. And they're not that dissimilar. The main differences are that the Brothers Johnson's version is more slickly produced and longer.
Quincy Jones tends to steam-clean everything, but it works better for me with this recording. I know Dead Heads and others like Otis' version better. Not me, but some of that is a time and place thing. Plus, I just think it's better streamlined.

Huh?
I prefer the Brothers Johnson version.

Marquee Moon - Television

rockaction:

Blonde On Blonde – Nada Surf

Pip’s Invitation:

Where It's At - Beck

Ilov80s:

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
This is my known-to-me top 5 from this playlist but, as usual, lots of great music here on #22.

Two of these artists (and one of these songs) are on my list.
Two other artists (and one of the songs) were on my long list.

I'm going to try to catch up on the unknown-to-me songs over the next few days. I appreciate the thought you all put in to your lists and commentaries. Great stuff.

Favorite new-to-me songs from #22:

Mercury Blues -- David Lindley (Worrierking) -- I know the song but not this version, which is pretty supercharged.
Blonde on Blonde -- Nada Surf (Rockaction) -- I loved the story that this one told.
It's Expected I'm Gone -- The Minutemen (OH) -- I am not nearly familiar enough with the Minutemen as I should be. This was surprisingly funky, which I guess really shouldn't be a surprise if Mike Watt is involved.

None of these sound like Neil Young, lest you thought I was getting predictable.

The Dreaded Marco:

Trailer Trash - Modest Mouse
So Modest Mouse's first 4 albums may be my favorite first-4 album run from any band.

"Eating snow flakes with plastic forks
And a paper plate of course
You think of everything
Short love with a long divorce
And a couple of kids of course
They don't mean anything
Live in trailers with no class
********, I hope I can pass
High school means nothing
Taking heartache with hard work
********, I am such a jerk
I can't do anything"

The Lonesome Crowded West has my favorite collection of songs and I could've gone with at least 5 of them for my playlist but I think this one personifies Isaac Brock the best lyrically as well as the band musically.

The Dreaded Marco:

Deep Red Bells - Neko Case
I  Neko.

She has been a favorite for 20 years. Started in a punk band in Tacoma. Morphed into (alt)country then alternative/americana/whatever. Key player in the New Pornographers. Blacklisted is her best album IMO and Deep Red Bells showcases her gorgeous voice and songwriting chops.

This was the song that hooked me and hasn't been surpassed yet.

The beginning of "Blank Generation" before the song starts swinging is just out of this world. So is the song. Richard Hell was something else. Inspired the entire punk movement's look, was in Television, put out many great songs of his own.

This has been an artist appreciation post.

Oooo-oooo-oooo-oooo

Triangles were fallin' at the window as the doctor cursed
He was a cartoon long forsaken by the public eye
The nurse adjusted her garters as I breathed my first
The doctor grabbed my throat and yelled, "God's consolation prize!"

Finally got around to yesterday's list while walking the dog this AM.

Known:

Gold: Grapevine (Don Q)
Silver: Let's Stay Together (simey)
Bronze: Marquee Moon (shuke)

Honorable mention for Nada Surf. I think I said in the other thread how much I love that album, though The Way You Wear Your Head is my personal favorite.

Unknown:

Gold: Adelaide (Zegras)
Silver: Twilight Creeps (krista)
Bronze: Mercy Blues (worrierking)

Shocking, I'm sure, but I had never heard Brandy (Your a Fine Girl).

You should stop by. I'm making enough food to feed a small army. We could talk #### about Billy Joel and make fun of Pip's Neil Young obsession.
I'm taking the southern route (I-66 and Wilson Bridge) in since I'm going to the bottom of AA County. When I go to my mom's in Annapolis, I'll sometimes go the Harper's Ferry/Frederick/Sykesville way in because I hate going around DC.

But I'm always happy to piss on Billy Joel, so may hit you up on my next trip

Wilson Bridge puts you in my neck of the woods in Alexandria.

Twilight Creeps – Crooked Fingers

My wife and I went to see a Neko Case show in Park City in 2006. A sushi restaurant there had just been voted “Best Burger” in Utah that year (go figure) so we decided to check it out before the show.

We get seated and I glance over at the table right next to us and see Neko and Eric Bachmann (Crooked Fingers) enjoying some sushi. He was the opening act that night.

They made the right call—the burger was nothing special. Not sure how it won Best in state.

Great show that night though.

The last time I saw Neko it was hot as hell that night. I remember her taking her shoes off to let her feet cool off. She had one of her band members, Kelly Hogan, open for her. Neko was standing in the back of the stage watching her (Hogan), and she looked so happy watching her friend shine. They were both great that night.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I should get 23 done today, but we’ll see if I get fully caught up because of fairly obvious reasons.

#24
Recognized by title alone: 18
Sounded familiar: 2
Didn't know: 15

Selected Favorites:
Heaven’s Trail (No Way Out) - Not only Tesla, but not the most famous song on this album (if not overall)? Definitely unexpected, in a purely good way.
I Feel the Earth Move - Add this to the pile of songs that I wish I’d considered more.
Sweetness - Instantly familiar, and yet I wasn’t confident about the title. A band I mostly know for their hits, but that’s on me.

Songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Milwaukee - I”m loosely familiar with Aimee’s work, but I doubt I’d ever have stumbled on this. Light, poppy, and a good vibe to kick off the playlist.
Mental Hopscotch - That 80s style done well. Small bonus that it flows into the next song well!
Staring at the Sun - Possibly my 2nd favorite song with this title ;). More seriously, a good groove that touches on a few bands I (obviously) like.

I saw Neko open for My Morning Jacket about 10 years ago. During MMJ's set, she came out to duet with Jim James on Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. I have also seen her perform with New Pornographers a few times.
We got a duet of Islands in the Stream when Neko played with MMJ here. I could have died happy that night.
Yep, they were alternating those on that tour.

All you Neko fans will have seen my friend Nora in concert. She and Kelly Hogan are on many of Neko's albums and toured with her for a long time. Nora and Kelly have a band called The Flat Five that has a regular gig at the Hideout in Chicago. Kelly is as lovely a person as you could find, but I don't enjoy her voice as much as Nora's. Happy to hear about that great show you saw, simey.

I listened to some very early Neko Case solo works since she seemed to be friends with everyone I knew in Chicago, and I just couldn't get into it. (I did like the New Pornographers, though.) I never dipped back in, but after hearing Deep Red Bells, I realize my error! Have a lot to catch up on.

Her first couple albums aren’t nearly as good.

Blacklisted and Fox Confessor are my two favorites.

And I’m also usually drawn to her songs on the New Pornographers’ albums too.

Although I also love Dan Bejar.

I don't know if I'm just full of turkey or if there isn't much to say about tomorrow's picks. I don't see any teasers or anything interesting, except that scorchy takes a possibly insurmountable lead in the race for “songs/artists that circumvent the language filter.”

New record store opening in my town tomorrow! I'll post the selections before I go to their grand opening in the morning.

I Don’t Want To Go Home – Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes
It’s “Jukes” not “Dukes”. It was originally my typo on my list to Krista but I did send a note to correct.

After my divorce 2.5 years ago, I moved to Asbury Park, NJ - and there’s no place I would rather live. I’ve suffered a further tragedy since the divorce and Asbury is the only thing that’s kept me sane since.

I’m three blocks from the Beach and the ocean air/breeze is so cathartic. But my true love is the Asbury Park music scene, which is huge. I’m in walking distance of multiple live music venues, including the Stone Pony which gets major national touring acts - especially in the summer when the Summer Stage is open. Music is everywhere in this town nearly every bar has at least a local cover band plugging along and several venues with smaller national touring acts stopping in as well.

This song - written by Little Steven - perfectly captures the “jersey shore sound” with its horns and party atmosphere - but it’s deeper than that. The narrator doesn’t want to go home - and while that’s partially because he’s having a blast out on the Town, the real reason is because there’s no one waiting at home for him anymore.

Went to Sea Hear Now last year, wish I would have known you were in the area.
It’s amazing to watch them build the stages and set everything up the week before the Festival - it’s like building a city inside a city.
Some residents hate it, because it blocks access to parts of the beach but I love everything about it. They get great acts as well.

I just had an odd encounter with a guy in the grocery store. I was looking at gift cards, and he came up beside me and said:

Guy: Hi
Me: Hello
Guy: How are you doing?
Me: Pretty good, you?
Guy: I'd be better if I could find myself a woman.
Me: Good luck to you.
Guy: Are you interested in being my woman today?
Me: No. Check the baking section.
Guy: Ok. Bye.
Me: Bye

Weird.

I guess we're on the food draft. We went to Cleburn's Cafeteria and I had roast leg of lamb. Given that they are from Greece, it was very tasty. Not what I expected for Thanksgiving.
I used to love to go to the cafeteria near my grandparents' house. My go to was roast beef, mashed potatoes, and collards. Sometimes I would get a piece of coconut cream pie.

On its face, this round looks weaker to me than the past two, but there are a lot of new-to-mes that could change my opinion. Oof, just realized I haven't listened to the 22s yet, either.

My favorites from this round are September Gurls, Summertime, and Johnny B. Goode. Special shout-out to Mary Jane's Last Dance for being my favorite Petty song (which isn't a high hurdle) and to Africa by Toto. Steve Lukather is part of Ringo's All-Starr Band right now, and their version of Africa at the show I saw in October was fantastic!
