Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (1 Viewer)

Best new to me: Otis – again, holy ****.
Refreshing surprise: Everly Bros, wasn't mentally prepared (in a good way) for it immediately after My Morning Jacket
Bronze: Black Keys – 10 am Automatic – GREAT ADD!!!
Silver: Whipping Post – is this really its countdown debut?
Gold: Thunder Road. 3rd best on the album, 2nd so far on this countdown, and the top prize today.

Sweetheart - Franke and the Knockouts
(new artist)

I haven't even thought about this song since the 80s, much less listened to it.

The "Franke" in Franke and the Knockouts is Franke Previte, who is a Jersey guy, from New Brunswick. He might be more known in the music business for his work on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, co-writing "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life" and "Hungry Eyes" -- winning an Oscar for the former.

I don't know if Previte still performs regularly in NJ or not. Thought some of our resident Jersey folks might know.
The Jersey roots run deep. Bon Jovi drummer Tico Torres once played for Franke & The Knockouts (albeit well after this tune) before joining JBJ. Not sure if Previte still performs.

My top 7 from round 3 excluding my own choice:
Much better than round 4 for my taste. (y)

I didn't really expect any positive response to margaritaville so pleased someone else appreciates it for what it is. It is most definitely overplayed yet I still haven't tired of it.

Oh ye of little faith.

Here's a non-spoiler factoid to keep it interesting: Stevie is the only one of our final top five artists not to score a 31-pointer. Three of the final top five have multiple 31-pointers.

I fixed this language to make clear that I'm talking about our final top five, not the top five as shown on the spreadsheet currently (which might or might not be the final five). In case anyone read the original post, I wanted to make that clear to avoid confusion.

I fall so far behind I don't know where to start, but I have a few comments.

How surprising simey and I chose the same Dylan.

The Last Resort is my Eagles so that's done.

Whipping Post is one I have been waiting for. It is my #1 song.

Enjoying the Jimmy Buffett comments. It was 1973, I was 11, and a friend made me listen to a song. Why Don't We Get Drunk (And Screw). We laughed so hard. It was his big brother's album, and on it was He Went to Paris, which is mine and simey's Jimmy here. So my Parrotheadism goes way way back. The live shows are so fun, kinda strange with all the props, a good crowd, a San Diego crowd, is sort of insane, but certainly not for everyone. Campy campy stuff, but literally part of my life. Margaritaville is what it is and I'm pleased to see someone take it so high, but it would be my 4th pick from Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes. The title track would be my favorite. I like humor and lightness in music which also explains the Steely Dan love.

I explained this thing to a college buddy and shared my 26 song list with him. He asked, "Ever notice how so many of your songs are about ###### up relationships?" so much for humor, eh.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I've been tied to the whippin' post.
Tied to the whippin' post, tied to the whippin' post.
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'

Just my way of saying cool. Look forward to find out. And i didn't want to use  cause you did.
My bad.

 I was just worried I'd inadvertently spoiled something.

I'm sure it's safe to share this one and a few others, but just one for now. Had I been a participant it would have ruined Don McLean's one hit wonder hopes. I'm a Van Gogh guy when it comes to the great masters. His story and much of his work haunts me. Landscapes, portraits, sketches... I can get lost. If you go to Amsterdam krista, visit the Van Gogh museum in the right state of mind.

Anyway, many of you already know the song. It's a brilliant bit of song writing that mentions 15 of his works. Perfectly sung by Don. Touches me deep sometimes. It's my "Desperado".

Don McLean - Vincent

New-to-me favorites from #3:

10 AM Automatic -- The Black Keys (KarmaPolice). There is a weird gap in my experience with the Black Keys. They hold my personal record for smallest venue where I saw a band that went on to play arenas. In 2003 a friend (the same one who turned me on to My Morning Jacket) suggested I come with him to their show at the North Star Bar in Philly, a now-defunct venue that held about 300 people. I had never heard of them but their set floored me, and I purchased their first two albums (The Big Come Up and the then-current Thickfreakness) from their merch table. Then I got busy with other things and didn't keep track of what they were doing, and missed their next release, Rubber Factory, and any singles from it, including this one. And didn't pay attention again until they hit big in 2010. 10 AM Automatic is brilliant sludge-blues that definitely takes me back to that night at the North Star Bar.
(Colors would go here if it were truly new to me; only its name was.)
Persecutor -- Floater (Manster). Heavy and insistent yet surprisingly nimble.
Flying in a Blue Dream -- Joe Satriani (Sullie). I don't normally gravitate to Eddie Van Halen-influenced guitar instrumentals, but this is well-crafted and evocative.

LET'S DO ANOTHER CHARITY CONTEST!

Above are the six artists chosen in the original contest, who I've confirmed all made the top 10.

Who are the other four?

Send me a PM with your guesses for these four, and I'll award another $100 to the charity of choice for whoever guesses the most correctly. Tiebreaker: tell me which of your four you believe will rank most highly (first tiebreaker) and what # you think they will be (second tiebreaker).

DEADLINE: 11:59 pm PST on Monday, December 5.

I received 12 entries for the charity contest above, which asked you to name the other four artists that would join these six in the top 10 overall:

Bruce Springsteen
Bob Dylan
Stevie Wonder
Tom Petty
The Allman Brothers Band
Prince

All the lists I received contained between zero and two correct answers. Since we're nearing the end, tonight I'm going to post the lowest-ranked artist on each person's list and where that artist ranked. After the 30s tomorrow, I'll post the second-lowest from each list. I am not going to bodyLIST-shame anyone so will just post without attributing anything to a particular entrant. If anyone wants to take credit or responsibility for their guess, though, they should!

All right, here we go. On this contest, the most oft-guessed artist was R.E.M., garnering 2/3 of the votes! Will that confidence be rewarded?

For today, these are the lowest ranked artists from each list, and their final ranking out of the 526 artists chosen overall. If your lowest-ranked looks awfully low, have no fear! As posted originally, I did not do the tiebreaker on lowest/highest overall score, as I damn well should have, so you could still be in the running.

This song was my ringtone for several years. I hear it and I still reach for my phone.

#4s
Recognized by title alone: 22
Sounded familiar: 4
Didn't know: 10

Selected Favorites:
Box of Rain (jwb)
Where Did You Sleep Last Night (MAC_32)
The Last Resort (falguy) - insert your own Papa Roach joke here.
I’ll Be Around (Zegras11)

Songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:

Do I Ever Cross Your Mind (simey)
The Funeral (shuke)
Walt Grace’s Submarine Test (Hawks64)
We’re the Same (ditkaburgers)

While catching up I noticed I had a 3rd half-dupe. Anyone else have this happen? Same song different artist? These are safe to reveal.

I've mentioned this one.

Louis Armstrong - Mack The Knife
Just a few years ago, I heard this on a Vegas oldies station on a delicious sound system and just fell in love with it. Of course I was already familiar with it, especially Sinatra's version. I opted to avoid jazz and classical making my list. I guess this is as close as I came to breaking the rule. In retrospect and after y'all reminding of many I forgot, this probably wouldn't make the list of 31, but here it is. love Louis alot.

This is the 3rd one that popped up a few days ago. I've drafted my version a couple times over the years, and well, here's Iz.

Israel Kamakawiwoʻole - Somewhere over the Rainbow
Not much to add that I haven't said before, but what a voice. Nothing I love more than rainbows in Hawaii.

Possibly not safe to reveal, but wth.
Disturbed - The Sound of Silence
I was left speechless after hearing this the first time. Might have played it 100 times that month. More.

Chicago is one of those bands I underestimate as a proper snob but when people draft them here, I'm always blown away by their music.

25 or 6 to 4 is such a rockin tune. The interplay between the guitar and the horns is breathtaking. The band probably would have still moved to the middle of the road in the 80s but the route taken would have been different if Terry Kath had lived.

it's surprising to me that proper snob cancel culture booted Chicago back then. Styx, Journey, REO, Eagles, more... perfectly understandable. Chicago was alltogether different and proper snobs should have embraced them.

They had a bit of goopiness to them even when Kath was in the band (he wrote Colour My World) which got more pronounced as the 70s became the 80s. The MOR-smoothness of Hard to Say I'm Sorry is a far cry from the guitar jam of 25 or 6 to 4. Even their trademark horns are buried deep in the mix.

Ahhh yes. I'm so sorry! Our "conversation" on this was tied to an earlier one, so it was way down on my "conversations" list and I didn't notice it. I'm going to edit the list for your selection.

Note to everyone: we have 13 lists!

I'm not a fan of "Colour My World" at all, but I don't mind goopiness in general (just look at MY list for evidence). People like goopiness, which is why it will always sell long after whatever hot trend dies out. Even Chicago at their goopiest is nothing worse than dentist office music.

"25 or 6 to 4" is a helluva jam, though.

Was just thinking to myself how genius the "Stand By Me" pick was that I had to see who picked it.

ilov80s.

Great pick, brother. Even if you gave me a blank slate, I probably wouldn't have thought of it. Sounds great.

And "Surrender" has rocked faces and will always rock faces. Sorry I'm late to the discussion on that one, too. Can you tell I'm at the end of the #3 playlist?

This next one is the first song of our new album!

Okay, so the list didn't put the Budokan version on, but I can still hear the intro because of The Beastie Boys' immortalization of it.

I suspect Kath would have left the band in 1980-ish and the David Foster stuff still would have happened. At the time of his death, he was working on a more rock-and-blues based solo album in a trio format. He was growing tired of the poppy direction they were taking in 1977 and he probably would have gotten more frustrated from there.

Actually James Pankow wrote Color My World, and Kath sang it. Same with Make Me Smile.

The band had three main writers -- Kath, Pankow and Robert Lamm -- and three main singers -- Kath, Lamm and Peter Cetera. Just because someone wrote a song didn't necessarily mean they were going to sing it. In many cases, when a new song was written, they would have all three singers try it out and go with whatever sounded best. Pankow's first lead vocal (You Are on My Mind from Chicago X) happened because he didn't like any of the three singers' takes on it, so they told him, "well, why don't you try it?"
