Totally my opinion and I'm sure it will make others with strong ones share theirs, but Hotel California is, to me, the best produced song ever recorded. It's just perfect in every way. Have loved that song from the second I heard the intro.

Only reason it isn't my number one is because of the story behind my number one and it's a song that has gotten a lot of love already.
I love it as well and I haven't tired of it yet. it's not on my list for 2 reasons:
a) I limited myself to 1 song per artist
b) I happen to love The Last Resort slightly more these days. I think it's a beautiful song.

Talking about surprises, only 2 votes for Hotel California is a big surprise to me. As well, Only 6 total votes for Eagles songs and 2 are yours and 1 is mine.

@falguy - just had a thought. Would it be possible to create some kind of formula on a new sheet that shows how close someone's list was to the consensus list? I guess something simple like how many of somebody's list was in the top 25, 50, 75, 100, etc. similar to what Pip has been doing?
I'll see what I can do. I was planning on doing a few summaries along these lines but not sure how to do it that way. I'm not sure the way the data is structured if it's possible. At the end I can post my full sheet and maybe someone knows more about excel than I do.

Definitely not asking for a lot of work. It's easy enough for me to check if I really care. All the work you and especially krista has done has been amazing! And the contributions of so many others to thread. I have to admit it's been better than the Beatles and LZ threads and those we 2 of my favorites ever!

Even songs I love can eventually reach their overplayed limit. Hotel California reached that for me a long time ago. I think it's a good song but I never seek it out and skipped over it in the playlist today (sorry Yankee).

My top 7 from round 2 excluding my own choice:
Rearviewmirror is a favorite, and glad to see Jimi's SSB make it.

I'll see what I can do. It'll be fun to try. I think i'll need to set aside the top x as a reference then do some lookups for hits based on everyones picks. I'm just guessing right now.

And regarding the bolded, The effort K4 has put in is unreal, as always. Also @Hawks64 for having the Spotify lists up within minutes usually. I don't have much useful input regarding songs and the picks so really appreciate what everyone has to say along the way. The knowledge on here is overwhelming. I do the sheet/stats stuff to try to add some value where i can.

I was going to write this later but might as well now while I'm on a role. I'm impressed at the respect shown by everyone here. It's all been positive . Nobody has come out once that I can recall and said anything negative about any other picks. Thats a big congrats and thank you to everyone. It's made this very enjoyable.

Yes, don't want to leave @Hawks64 out - the playlists have been awesome!

Just Win Baby:

Wildflowers (1994), from Wildflowers - Tom Petty

I have mentioned several times that Petty is one of my favorite all-time artists. I kind of cheated my one song per artist rule by already including a Petty duet and a Heartbreakers song, and I could have chosen many songs to sit so close to the top of my list. For me, Wildflowers is a great example of the simple beauty of his songwriting. I love everything about the song.

Don't forget @simey stepping in on those a few days, too!

I'll work on the "matchmaking" (whose list each poster's most close resembled) and the secondary matchmaking to the consensus list starting tomorrow. I have the data by poster, artist, song, number of votes and where the votes were (1-31), number of songs, and various other ways already so it's just matching it up.

ETA: Not to take fun away from @falguy if he wants to do it! Let me know!

I can probably pull this pretty easily.
show off! :P

Oops, see above.
Not that much :D. Rather than duplicate effort I'll let you pull together what you can/want and if there's anything I can add after I will. I had a few ideas like

# of songs in the top 10 for an artist (10 is arbitrary)
songs with the most top 10 votes (10 is arbitrary)
total points for and FBG's songs
the artist who has the most songs with > 1 vote
cross ref how many of my picks (for example) were also picked by someone else.

I cant even do many of these without tweaking the spreadsheet so by all means if you have this or other things to show at the end be my guest.

# of songs in the top 10 for an artist (10 is arbitrary)

Your first one I can give you right now: the highest number of songs in the top 10 for any artist is 1. There is a 10-way tie for 1st on this metric. There is an artist with two in the top 15, though.

#2 and #4 I have already and can post that tomorrow when we're done.

I don't understand what #3 is.

I don't have #5 immediately available, so that's one you could do?

Pip’s Invitation:

Marquee Moon - Television
(duplicate – sixth AND seventh votes today!)

We've talked about this one a bunch already. As I said before, it's basically the Stairway to Heaven of indie rock. It's the highly unlikely mix of punk rock meeting The Allman Brothers Band, but also hearkens backward (jazz) and forward (post-rock). The guitars on this track are completely insane and I never get tired of delving into every note.

I saw Television on the 40th anniversary tour for Marquee Moon (the album) because I HAD to see this song performed live. It did not disappoint.

I'm a little surprised by the lack of Eagles love too. One of those bands that I figured a majority of middle-aged-dummies would have one song of theirs in a top 31. I picked Hotel California for the song in the charity contest too (even though i didn't pick it as my one Eagles entry)

I don't understand what #3 is.
I don't know why? whats so hard to understand about "total points for and FBG's songs".

I should proofread before hitting Post

What I meant is total all the points for all songs for an FBG. As in, who has the most points for all their songs. I'm 99% sure you have this and fully planned on posting it at the end. Somebody who picked superstition and marquee moon would be in the running I'm sure.

We're An American Band - Grand Funk Railroad
There have been a lot of talented artists chosen in this thing. Grand Funk is the least-talented of all. I haven't even listened to some of the selections, but I know it's true.

There are a lot of "meaningful" lyrics in the songs chosen. This ain't one of 'em. The lyrics to this are dumb. The "smartest" are about playing poker with Freddie King.

Farner's guitar solo is awful. Donnie Brewer can't do anything other than pound his drum in (what he thinks) is "time". GFR hired a keyboard player and he only knew how slam his fingers into his instrument. Mel Schacher's bass was the only good thing about this band, because he apparently listened to James Jamerson down the road in Detroit. The rest of them were un-good. I am willing to bet that there can be a band made up from folks in this thread who sound better than Grand Funk

Guess what? I don't care. This record hit me like like an electric shock that only an 11 year-old music-nerd boy can feel.

Story behind this is that GFR and Humble Pie were on tour. The bands were out one night drinking (imagine that!) and got to arguing whose country had the better musicians. The Pie was throwing out the Beatles, Stones, etc.... Donnie wasn't having it. "WE got Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Elvis Presley!!!!; We're an American Band, *******!!!".

Thankfully, the record company hired Runt to produce this one and his presence makes the record zoom.

Screw all y'all - this is MY record.

Doug B:

Holy Ghost - The Bar-Kays
Criminy Thropa-Monster! This was the unofficial song of every funk pre-show at the Capitol Centre in D.C. Once this one started, you knew the headliners were coming on.

This thing shreds, brothers and sisters. Awesome choice, @Doug B

"I don't recognize the title ... what song is that?"

Just looking at this list I can say Rearviewmirror is my fave of the day. Such a great song!
I could've made this exercise very easy on myself and not bound myself to one song per artist, but what fun is that? Who slotted #1 and #2 in this thing was never a doubt in my mind. The selection? Over whelming - with both of them.

What separated Rearviewmirror was how it entered my life. I grew up on 1990's alternative and was somehow blissfully unaware of an early 90's Pearl Jam song until the late aughts? Blasphemy. It was needle threading not being exposed to this piece before then, but that's what happened. Music started becoming important to me in 94 at age 11 (a year plus after this was released), they had already sworn off music videos, local radio didn't play it, and I didn't own Vs. It wasn't until name that tune with my future brother-in-law at 4 something in the morning at his old bar that it entered my orbit. I was new to the circle as we had only been dating a few weeks, but typically when this is played we move onto the next one after a minute or so instead of the whole track. He named that tune in one note to close the gap on my typical lead, but then a puzzled look appeared over his face when it was clear I was try to play connect-the-dots. You do know this song, right? I sheepishly avoided eye contact, looking up to my brain in hopes of finding a yes, but rolled snake eyes and shook my head no. Unlike other plays when we would move on by now he turned his old bar speakers as loud as they would go. We were along for this ride all the way til the last note.

He was unaware what was going through my intoxicated mind as Eddie tore through this track, but I enjoy it today as much as I do because of that first experience. I didn't listen to it with pre teen angst - fast guitars and drummers launching sticks at the wall! yeah! I listened to it as someone who was trying to evolve, learn, and overcome the old me. Despite just a few weeks of dating I had already decided I was going to propose to his sister. I later found out she had confided with an aunt around the same time that I was it. As the track progressed I was entranced with jaw increasingly dropped - at the end of that ferocious outro I was emotionally exhausted... we had reached the apex, so we finished our respective bottles and called it a night. That song instantly became a multiple play per day staple for I forget how long all while little did I know at that time that my now wife? She was fighting that same battle. A good person that made a series of bad decisions. Til the two of us met anyway. Soon thereafter we...

So much clearer

This song is SO much better than the sum of its parts. I credit Todd. :giggle:

In the late 90s I worked for a minor league hockey team. We went to play against the team in Little Rock at the old fairgrounds arena. Me and some of the other guys who worked for the team were using an office right near the dressing rooms to send faxes and get on dial-up internet. The guy who worked in there told us his office is where Sweet, Sweet Connie used to give the #### ####!

I never knew until this year that Mack the Knife is a cover of a song from a German musical Threepenny Opera by Brecht. There was a 1931 film of it by Pabst that’s actually on HBO Max. I really enjoyed it and kind of preferred the version there. Much less swing and more fitting for the introduction of a knife wielding villain. He’s a rapist and murderer and the song is an incredible introduction.

Quality here sucks but gives the idea

It looks like GW Pabst instead of Murnau (was thinking Murnau in Hollywood by that point and around when he died in the car crash).

Will need to check out on HBO Max though, as not sure I’ve seen any Pabst besides Pandora’s Box.

As you can see from the spreadsheet, Stevie now has a large but not at all insurmountable lead for #1 artist. Bob Dylan would need three #31s tomorrow to take the lead. Prince would need four of them. Getting more than that would seem very difficult, especially for someone like Petty who's already been on so many lists (and most people had a "one per artist" rule), so let's throw out Petty et al.

More interesting is the bottom of the top 10. We already know that The Allman Brothers make it, which will tell you something about how many #1s they might have. Right now, they would displace R.E.M. for that last slot, and maybe move above others, too. But could R.E.M. have some more fans out there we haven't heard from yet, maybe supplanting Marvin Gaye? We also have Jim Croce, Otis Redding, and others that could skip ahead of R.E.M. and Gaye with only 1-2 top selections.

I'm probably going to offend GB shuke and rockaction but I wish somebody would have warned me about 20 straight minutes of instrumentals.

Just because I like those songs does not mean I wouldn't take a bathroom break during them if played live. Sometimes you have to create your own intermission.

Songs!

The race for top song looks even closer than for artist (non-spoiler alert - they both end up very close). "Superstition" has it right now, but one vote for "Marquee Moon" could lead to the biggest upset in countdown history!!!!1111 Surprise third-place entry "Visions of Johanna" would need two #1s to take the lead, as would upstart "The Boxer," stalwart "God Only Knows," and current leader for one-hit wonder, "Surrender." Five other songs could take it by getting three #1s, and "Fortunate Son" could even sneak into a tie for the current lead with three, as well.

I can advise you on optimal bathroom-break songs if you ever go to a Phish concert.
