Pretty sad that the last pass he ever threw in the NFL was that sideline out that got picked and led to the G-Men's winning field goal.Although it is blasphemous to say this in Chicago, I always liked Favre. Does this mean the best QB in the NFC North is now Kitna? I don't even know whom I would rank second-best QB in the NFC North.

Bears fan here too. As much as I hate watching Favre beat up on us over the years, there's never been a qb I enjoyed watching more. I really have a feeling of sadness right now. Truly an end of an era here. Gl to you Brett. We'll all miss you.

The ESPN article said that when pushing for GB to pursue Moss, Favre was willing to commit to returning for multiple years.

So if they had gotten Moss, it is clear he could have returned. Of course, they did not even try.

Favre was right about one thing, the Packers are a pretty good team but need to add a top player to have a realistic shot at the Superbowl.

Put me down as saying that T.T. at least indrectly (and perhaps directly) pushed him out the door. He was unwilling to use either top picks or free agency to improve the offense and I believe the motivation was to avoid giving Favre incentive to stay. T.T. wanted to build his own team and be given credit for the success and did not feel that was really possible while Favre remained. Has T.T. helped the team, surely. But that is not the topic here.

What an absolute great career. I am glad to see him leave on a high note with the excellent season he had last year. I am shocked though that he is leaving this year as the team looks like it is very close to a Champion. But it amazed me that someone his age could still play at the highest levels (and take the hard hits without ever missing games). Thanks for all of the memories Brett. You certainly will be missed.

Unless I hear it from him I just don't buy the whole Moss theory. In fact Mort and others have said it WASN'T because of Moss. He'd basically be throwing his current WR's under the bus if he came out and said that. My goodness we were 13-3 last year, how can you say the team wasn't improved? TT did build his own team and it's pretty damn good.

The offense was rated #3 in points and yards last year.He spent 2nd round picks on WRs that have become pretty good for Green Bay (though, they were not the big name draftees). How many of those big named 1st rounders were better than Jones and Jennings last year? Bowe is about it.Meachum? Ginn? ...and so on...I am completely confident in TT...seemed people like Steve Young and others whined about not giving Brett enough.Because TT did not go out and pay enough to get Moss last year.But look at that offense...I don't think the cupboard was bare.TT simply was not willing to build a team only around a 38/39 year old QB...as he should not. His job is to build the Green Bay Packers to compete not only this year...but for years to come...and he has been doing that very well IMO. It has nothing to do with wanting more credit after Favre retired either IMO.

They will sign a vet...and I think they will make moves in this 2nd/3rd tier of free agency. TT was just not going to break the bank for marginal talent.They will also have to lock up Grant, Jennings, Kampman I think...as well as do something with Rodgers contract possibly.

Whether you liked him or not, you had to respect him as a player and a competitor.The man loved to play the game and it showed.

Oh lord how I will NOT miss that being said about him every time he appears on camera. I swear, for every time he was seen smiling and loving the game I saw two of him sulking.Favre was a grade A talent, but let's get off the hero worship since he has asked for and recieved special treatment for years. He may have never said he was going to retire before, but he sure had me convinced last year when he was crying after his magical win over the bears second string. When I think of class acts I think of guys like Elway who never took special priveleges. Is he due priveleges being a HOF QB? Absolutely. But it would be much more commendable if he didn't indulge himself in them.The timing of the Moss signing and his imminent retirement may only be circumstantial, but after his tantrum last year threatening to stay out of one of the minicamps I am not surprised in the least. I do however think it odd that most Packer fans I've seen internet wide were in such denial over his possible retirement. The Packers will still have a very solid team next year. Rodgers will not be the difference maker that Favre was this year, but they still have a lot going for them in spite of the retirement. They probably would lose close contests that they won this year but that won't keep them out of the playoffs.

I'm talking about the guy who loved to play football. The guy who would take a sack, get up in the face of the opposing player and then give him a smack on the head and say "let's play!"You don't see that excitement out of many players. Agree?

I'm not saying they were going to panic or anything like that because TT doesn't throw big money at FA's. Just that if they were interested in a player perhaps this could be a factor in a player signing. Just a thought with regard to the original "false" retirement report a week or so ago.

I agree up to a point. That is, I think that TT was primarily trying to build a team using the strategy he thinks is best.

However, I also think that most GM's primary goal is to win a Superbowl. The best way to do that, IMHO, was to go out and get a top player (offense or defense) now and get Brett to commit to staying for 2 years. Jared Allen for a couple firsts or something. (I did not, personally, favor Moss acquisition.)

TT was NEVER going to do anything like that.

So where we differ is that I think there is ego at work. I believe TT wants to win a Superbowl with a team he put together. I for one think the Packers best chance to do that in the next 4 years is now gone.

I'm 6 months away from watching my first Packer game EVER without Brett Favre...

The first game I remember watching (for whatever reason) was the first game Favre played (when Majkowski (sp?) got hurt)...

and signing Moss wouldn't have helped... We have 3 picks in the top 60 (again), and we'll improve that way. If we did sign a free agent, a free agent WR was the LAST thing we needed. Driver, Jennings, Jones, Robinson, & Martin are the best WRs Favre had ever had in his career...

I think that the best chance GB had of getting to a Superbowl in the next 4 years just walked out the door, and that they should have tried more to add to a team with Favre rather than groom a replacement.

I have a lot of questions about this post;What are you talking about with "Draft well, maybe."Brett Farve retired, it wasn't Green Bay's decision. A couple of firsts for Allen? Why? To mortgage the future for a longshot at winning it all.And if they don't win it all...then what? You piss away 2=1st round picks for nothing. Sending away 2 firsts to keep holding on to a guy who could retire at any given time any given season is not a wise move for a GM.Allen is not worth 2 first round picks. That sets the franchise back IMO.I dont underestimate what he did for the Packers this past season. But I also saw what he had done the previous 2 years and know that he could just as well be far worse than he was last year.As it stands...any team might fall back to that.Though, I think 8-8 is the floor for this team given the talent they still have on O and on D.

Quarterback Brett Favre told Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy Monday night that he was going to retire.

But his agent, James (Bus) Cook, told the Journal Sentinel this morning that he believes Favre wants to play another year and didn't get the sense that the Packers wanted him back all that badly.

"It's my opinion," Cook said of the Packers' lack of interest. "I know he wants to play one more year. I do not know much conversation there was (between Favre and the Packers) and I don't think anyone forced him to make that decision. But I don't know that anyone tried to talk him out of it."

Cook said that Favre feels physically and mentally capable of playing at least one more year.

"I think he wanted to play," Cook said. " I think he's still got it. He knows he's still got it. I think he felt he could play one more year. I don't know if they told him they really wanted him to play. That's just the feeling I got."

Cook was asked whether he thought Favre could be talked into returning: "I don't know," he said.

McCarthy said recently that he and general manager Ted Thompson sat down during the bye week of the playoffs and evaluated tape of Favre to determine whether he could still play. McCarthy said that they came to the conclusion that he was still able to play the game at a high level.

During the off-season, there were reports that Thompson had not done much to encourage Favre to return and that Favre's feeling was that the Packers weren't fired up about bringing him back. After reports surfaced of Favre's uneasiness about Thompson's lack of communication, Thompson told reporters at the combine that he called Favre to talk about the future.

My favorite memories: Favre throwing 4 TDs on Monday night just after his father died; Favre standing up for guys coming out of rehab, most recently Koren Robinson; Favre throwing the OT walk-off TD to Greg Jennings this year week 10 -- felt like just another day at the office for the ol gunslinger. Jennings and little else?2 very good (but getting older) OTs. A young line that has improved in the 2 years they have been together and are going into their 3rd year together.Jennings, Jones, Lee, Driver, Robinson. Name me 4 other teams with WRs and a TE that good and that deep?And then there is Grant who showed he had a bit of talent last year.They may have taken a small hit with Williams leaving. Though...if Jolly comes back healthy...with he and Cole...they also drafted Harrell in the 1st round last year. If he lives up to his potential...they could be better off without Williams (that is a big if).

It would seem that there are multiple sources saying Favre didn't perceive that suits wanted him back.

Some of them, such as his agent, speak to him regularly.

My point is that I have NEVER perceived that TT wanted very much for him to return.

Obviously, we all must speculate to some extent.

But I do still believe that BS that TT was reluctant to improve the offense through free agency because it would encrouge Favre to come back.

What I saw in the Dallas game was playing better play calling when Rogers was in.

On the flip side, the Dallas D really was playing outstanding early in that game. Their pass pressure was outstanding. After he left, it was like the Dallas D took a deep breath and I didn't see the same upfield speed, the same aggression to get to the QB since it was a "backup."

It would seem that there are multiple sources saying Favre didn't perceive that suits wanted him back.Some of them, such as his agent, speak to him regularly. My point is that I have NEVER perceived that TT wanted very much for him to return.Obviously, we all must speculate to some extent. But I do still believe that BS that TT was reluctant to improve the offense through free agency because it would encrouge Favre to come back. So far...it seems only his agent is giving his opinion that it was that the suits did not want him back.Reluctant to improve the offense? Again...they were #3 in yards and points last year.TT drafted 3 WRs (one hurt and out for his career but was promising in the short time he was there)...Jennings and Jones looked to be very good last year.He also traded a pick to acquire Ryan Grant. Has been drafting Oline. Kept Lee on board...and so on.Draft a QB in the 1st round when he was supposedly top 5 draft pick talent and getting him at 26 when you have a QB on the other side of 35 is a sign that you have a QB on the other side of 35 and a guy rated highly dropped to you.

Where in the world do we need anyone on defense??Safety? No.Corner? No.Linebacker? Hawk & Barnett are great.Line? No.We could use some OL, but our offense was absurdly good last year. We just need to wait for our young guys to improve. I think this was gonna be our year. If Rodgers is good, it still might be.

Ding Dong the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead! Kidding aside, as much as I hate the Packers, I respect them and Favre. He's been great for their franchise (wish he was a Bear). Its funny that he decided to retire the one year when there was the least talk of him retiring.

The funny thing is, you could still make the argument the Packers might still have the best qb in the division.

He will be missed. He reminded me of a neighborhood kid playing football in the back yard. No one ever acted like they enjoyed themselves any more than he appeared to. He never lost sight of "playing a game". He was just a big kid out having fun with the boys.

I admire that about him, particularly because he didn't appear to ever be self-conscious about it. It was completely natural, as opposed to the pats on the helmet I'll see Brady give that seem to be meant for the cameras.

Disagree.Safety? Yes...some depth is needed. I like Bigby and Rouse...but IMO Collins just is not improving enough.LB? Yes...I would like to see someone brought in to compete with Poppinga.Corner? Yes...they need depth here...not older vets...but Harris and Woodson are getting older.Line? Yes...they need another DE IMO. If Allen would have been available...I really wanted to push for him. KGB is overpriced and is only useful on 3rd downs. OL will need some younger guys to start grooming to backup Clifton and Tauscher...and while the guards got better...they need improvement there.
