a lot has been written in this forum about the FBG hype machine, and generally its people complaining. but i think this season they've done pretty well. here are the guys they were hyping the most this offseason (1 = a little hype, 5 = lots of hype):
- Ben Watson (4) - all in all, he's falling short of the hype. he does have the 4th most yardage of all TEs, but is missing the red zone looks. i think Gabriel's arrival affected him negatively, and that happened after many drafts. i have a hard time saying FBG was wrong on this one.
- Jerrious Norwood (4) - has done nothing to disappoint. we all knew his opportunities would be limited, what we didn't know was he might be the most explosive runner out there. got to say they were right on the money here.
- Wali Lundy (5) - ouch. although i think anyone resting their FF season on the supposed starting RB in Houston deserves what they get. but FBG was way off base on this guy.
- Winslow Jr (2) - they pegged him as a value pick, and as the top TE thus far, they had it right.
- McNabb (3) - also said he looked great, and would far outperform his ADP. uhhh... yea. i think so. 33% better than Peyton thus far. nice.
- Kevin Jones (3) - may still be too early to tell, but it looks like the level of hype panned out in performance so far. he'll have a nice season, and they more or less convinced me to hang onto him in my keep 3 league. glad i did so.
- Chris Simms (2) - ruptured spleen notwithstanding, the whole TB team is in shambles. good thing they didn't go too crazy.
- Frank Gore (4) - also has done nothing to disappoint. can't exactly predict a fumbling problem when a guy's never had the opportunity. still is far outplaying his ADP. good call by FBG.
- Maurice Drew (3) - he's opening eyes. at least, those who don't read FBG. they pegged this one rather well. he's turning into a nice late-round steal.
- Antonio Bryant (2) - pretty much in line with what was expected thus far.
- Troy Williamson (3) - falling pretty short of what FBG was touting preseason. still may come around, but so far he's a let down. needs to get in the endzone... and hang onto it.
i may be forgetting some, but for the most part, i'd say the FBG hype train is pretty money. the Lundy thing i have to admit, i always thought was bogus (i actually thought Morency would be the guy there), but no one cares about that. basically, what i learned for next year is to pay attention to the hype, but give it a grain of salt when it sounds over the top. it seems the guys they talk up the MOST, are the ones most likely to disappoint, even though it's still not that common. and like i said before, Watson's situation changed when Gabriel came in, although i didn't see FBG adjusting their projections all that much at the time.
in any event, this was pretty much for me to sort it all out and make note of how they stacked up. i'd say pretty well.
