The guy's a moron, but anyone who thinks that was a slip up isn't paying attention to current events. There's been so much made of Romo's personal life (Underwood, beauty pageants etc..), culminating in Simpson Gate last week that a lot of people in the press are calling him Tony Romeo. It was one of the few times he actually didn't make a mistake. It's called a pun. Perhaps Gumbel IS too high brow/intelligent for a lot of football fans.Anyone hear him mention the Saturday night matchup between the Panthers and the Cowboys, led by their QB, Tony Romeo.

I disagree. The guy gets 5-6 names wrong per game. If it was a joke/pun, he didnt set it up or lead in with anything...just tossed a punchline out there. The guy's a moron, but anyone who thinks that was a slip up isn't paying attention to current events. The guy gets 5-6 names wrong per quarter. Which is the only reason nobody seems to get it. As for his co-hosts. Deion was going on and on with Gumbel about how a team could take a delay of game after a review, most of which came after the ref announced the false start penalty so I'm not convinced about the other guys' observational skills. And it's not an inside joke because he's being called that all over the place. This is one of the few times that listeners are screwing up, not Gumbel.I disagree. The guy gets 5-6 names wrong per game. Well, he called him Romo several times during the game before he said Romeo, so I'm pretty sure he knew what the guy's name is. It's a very big reach to believe that it was a Gumbel slip up, while it's a very easy to understand pun that's widely used in the media these days. Sure, I guess it is extremely slightly remotely possible that Gumbel has called him Romo up until now and suddenly forgot (or thought he was wrong every previous time he called him Romo) and started thinking his real name is Romeo coincidentally to all the hoopla of Romo's love life that has taken center stage. However, Gumbel is a smart guy, just not football smart, and as long as he isn't under the pressure of a live game, knows whose name is what. It's called a pun, it's national tabloid news and a fitting and easy to connect nickname. Of all Gumbel's many, many gaffes, that wasn't one of them. And btw, even though BG often misidentifies people, he gets the actual names right, just not when addressing the proper person. So there's basicalyy less than zero percent chance that Gumbel actually thinks Tony's last name is Romeo. If you want to argue otherwise, you're just being deliberately obtuse.Or Gumbel heard someone else call him that and thought it was his real nameThe guy gets 5-6 names wrong per quarter. This is one of the best fishing attempts I've ever seen. Nice use of subtlety. I'm surprised it's not getting more run. I guess people don't even care enough about Gumbel to bite.Well, he called him Romo several times during the game before he said Romeo, so I'm pretty sure he knew what the guy's name is. It' absolutely not a fishing trip. I hate Gumbel as a football announcer as much or more than I've ever hated any announcer (or even pair). I constantly yell at the TV for every mistake he makes. But every dog has his day and this was clearly a pun that many many more people than Gumbel use. Seiously. And subtlety is just not in my Scot/Irish blood. This is one of the best fishing attempts I've ever seen. Nice use of subtlety. I'm surprised it's not getting more run. Not great? Tom Hammonds is better than 90% of the announcers out there. I say he "IS" great.Who was the guy that did it with Collinsworth last week? He wasn't so bad. Not great, but certainly better than Gumbo.
Well at least they're both named Jeff :glasshalffull:As usual, he identified a player from the other team when he said that Wilkins kicked off as the Steelers kicked off after Nate Washington's TD.
