FBG loses its Tremendous Upside: RIP friend (1 Viewer)

This is very like an Irish wake. It has music, booze, and stories. Definitely checks all the boxes.
All we need is one hot offdee 8 red head, one really cool pretty hot big ####### red head and a bunch of skeletons and heifers.

TU would approve.

im guilty of this big time. Although i watch what i eat i havent been to the dr in years.

Sounds like he was a great guy. From his personality being described I'm not so sure he'd think all the public PMing and cliquishness was cool though. Sounds like he wasnts really into cliques. RIP Tremendous Upside. I'm sure I'd have enjoyed him. I'm the same way. I've got friend who are bank vice presidents and friends who are day laborers.

RIP TU. Sorry for your loss Koya, DD and everyone else. There are great stories/pictures in this thread. Thanks for sharing.

Another round of thanks for all the well wishes. And the new facebook requests, and soon perhaps a few more brick and mortar friendships.

What a ####### great legacy this humble man has left us. His was an old soul. A wisdom but moreso a kindness tempered by a very realistic view of the world that was well beyond his years.

Interesting tidbit - he never watched a single full simpsons episode. Just never liked the Simpsons. To this day I can't understand that.

This alone makes him one of the smartest men ever to walk the earth.

Guys I have bad news. I'm so sorry to have to tell you all this.

We lost Sean today. He went into cardiac arrest about 45 min ago and could not be revived.

Let's hope he is at peace. God I hope there's another side where I can see him again.
Fk. I "knew" Sean from the board. We pmed about NY and literature quite a bit awhile back.

Fk fkity fk.

Crap, I can't believe I forgot that he came to the Joe Bryant non-tapas cornhole, too. That means I met Sean three times. IIRC a smaller group of us, including Sean, went to Celtic Crossing after the official cornhole, and then a subset of that group went elsewhere thereafter. There was also something funny that happened with Sean and chet's credit card number, but I've forgotten the details.
IIRC, I wasn't able to attend but I worked with the restaurant to provide some shots.

No need for quotes. I think we are realizing that those of you who conversed with him here, in our community in the cloud, you knew him. He was genuine.

While I need to look into what the best road would be for the charitable component, let me propose this, which I may have mentioned briefly before.

SEAN GULLEN'S TREMENDOUS UPSIDE BAR CRAWL.

Let's find a weekend that works for people who want to come into NYC, I'll look for a group rate at a hotel or something if needed. One of our fav pastimes was a charity bar crawl that sorta fell apart a couple years ago as we all got older, families, etc... if ever there is a reason to get together, throw down a few, reminisce, give to charity and, most of all, make new friends to continue Sean's tradition of embracing friendship across thousands of miles.

We usually did it down in the Village, and I'd like to hit up a number of those spots. Proceeds go to charity, will make some t-shirts, open to any and all suggestions. As our crawl used to be an annual thing, let this be the inaugural. Perhaps April so the weather's a bit better and time for planning etc.

It's a celebration of his life, of life in general, of friendship. And much like passover or purim, anyone who is NOT feeling drunk by the end just ain't doing it right.

Tell me these were not GREAT times:

Drink TU and Drunk Koya (was a latter stop on this particular crawl)

Koya and TU - the early years.... Maybe my fav photo ever with TU. This was my first bar crawl I think. But while his friends of 10, 20 years at the time were there, as you all have put so well, I never felt like the "new" friend. And that feeling extended beyond Sean to our crew. A friend of Sean was a friend of ours. That simple.

Funny story as Sean and Co. almost saved my ### that day. Was making out with some random chick in the bar and hanging with her for like an hour. Suddenly three girls come rushing up and are like, wtf are you doing (to me). I'm like, slurredly responding... um, making out with your friend? They respond, well, her boyfriend is RIGHT THERE (other side of the room) and #### almost got out of hand. As if it were my fault that this chick didn't tell me her BF was there? Its silly little stories like that and always knowing that your back was had, that abound. PS - when my wife reads this later (I want her to see these accolades and she's well aware of FBGs role in our collective lives) remember this was before we met. :oldunsure:

GO GIANTS! (18-1) - In perhaps the most fun night of my life with the crew we gathered for our annual super bowl bash in the City at our friend Mike's apartment (while not "that" mikes apartment, he got at least as much ### as the site) for the first Giants-Pats SB. The good thing is Mike always got awesome food and it was a great party, which was needed since my Giants were about to get destroyed. By the end of the game I had not moved from my "reserved" spot on the couch and was dead sober. Actually just glued to a game that I thought would be a blowout. Well, we then proceeded to blow out our brain cells at the local bars. I remember yelling out the window on West 54th and hearing the resonating cries of victory through the pillared canyons of NYC.

Now, Sean was, unfortunately, a Jets fan. But he was not one bit bitter. He was so ecstatic to see his friends (most of us are giants fans) happy, that he was literally as happy or more so than we were. Good memories in that room, I'll share a couple stories about it but remember - as awesome a guy as Sean was, even he had limits. And if you are going to steal in on a chick he's making progress with at a bar only to totally fumble the opportunity so NO one gets laid, expect appropriate revenge (story to come).

This will be our night - If you come to the celebratory Irish wake of a bar crawl and you see more clearly than this by night's end (hell, afternoon's end), then you are doing it wrong. Just look at that fuzzy happiness. The guy brought with him a vibe of awesomeness.

The talk of cliques and all is unfounded. Sean met up with tons of folks as we've seen, but a few of us were in chat for years so we spoke almost daily. It wasn't an exclusive club, many fbgs would come through. But we had a core group which included Sean. Hence we knew him well, so we might have a few more things to say about him.

I mean what clique would invite Chem X to join? That's just crazy talk.

Ive been straight edge for 37 years but I may break that if this happens.
If anyone would respect someone's wishes to stay sober, it would be Sean. And let's be honest, drinking absolutely had a hand in his death. It's something I am grappling with right now. Sean would want us to celebrate and be happy, but I realize the fine line between that and encouraging unhealthy behavior.

I suppose Sean would agree with me that the issue is about moderation. More specifically, about having excess (in this case drinking to excess) - just in moderation. He'd get that nuance completely.

for what it's worth... I'm not dry, but I'm also not a big drinker. Acer, I got your back here when this happens; you won't be the only non-####-faced guy there.

FWIW, while Sean wouldn't buy into cliques, he would absolutely understand them. Loved his ability to not only understand, but seek out nuance. It made for a ton of great little jokes and asides. God, I'll miss that discourse more than anything.

In the not nearly so important in the context things point of view:

For those who knew Sean, either i-level or real-level, they'd know his propensity to disappear at times. Whether it was the ol' 11:45 pm at the bar and suddenly... wtf is Sean (probably half way to queens) moments or his disappearing from a league or a message board for a while.

Well, Chem X can speak to Sean's vacating ownership responsibilities in our Fantasy Football League. I mean, he just went off the grid for a while. Made a mess in terms of trying to get everyone all paid up. So, out of the blue, who jumps into the fray to be COMMISSIONER of another league I am in with him (with his long time buds)? You guessed it... Sean.

Now, season's over for a while and considering what he was dealing with family wise no one pushed him, but the reality is NO one has paid for the league (200 buy in so not insignificant unless you are Chet or Otis) and it's about the last thing on our mind. But in a subtle very TU way, it was a friendly #### you #####es, you figure out this mess.

The guy was the most amazing friend, but (thankfully) not a COMPLETE Saint. He definitely could get a good dig in especially when recognizing general human stupidity, hypocriticalness or worse yet ignorance. But it's somehow fitting that the one year he decides to be commish of all things, he decides to leave it to use to get #### straightened out. F'n Gullen.

Have never met anyone from this site, but condolences to those who knew TU.

This thread made me go do bloodwork this afternoon that I have been putting off for two months....I am 39.

That's called The Irish Goodbye. Fitting since based on Sean's name and look in pictures I'm assuming he has Irish ancestry.
Love this and will forever add this to my repertoire. :banned:

Sean ruled. I never met him IRL, but we were in many WIS leagues together and chatted during live play and during drafts and such. When I was planning a trip to NYC with my dad he had so many recommendations for me it was overwhelming. The best part was when we finally got to NYC (it was a whole east coast baseball thing with fenway and cooperstown and yankee stadium and such) we were so tired we didn't really want to venture too far. We knew we wanted to try new york pizza and we saw a "Famous Rays" and being Seinfeld fans we went for it. I PM'd TU how we'd had that and how I thought NY pizza was overrated, mostly tongue in cheek since I figured that wasn't a real pizza place for New Yorkers. He had the best response and I wish I still had it. Both condescing and polite. Instead of just telling me how stupid that was, which I expected, he gave me like a three sentence reason why that wasn't representative of NY pizza.

This probably makes no sense because I'm drunk. But I just think it sucks he's gone. He was a great person, and he couldn't even bring himself to rip on me for going to some ####ty pizza joint with a recognizable name in times square and pretending it was representative of new york pizza. He was so nice and thoughtful you couldn't even bait the guy. RIP TU. I never met you, but I will miss you.

Man. So sorry to hear this. 37? I'm sad for all of your loss, especially Koya, DD and others. Also sorry I never got to meet him. By the testimonials here he obviously touched a lot of people. RIP TU

What was the name of the band he loved? Not pearl jam but some others mentioned it. Wanted to check them out.
