FBG'S TOP 81 LED ZEPPELIN SONGS: #1 - When The Levee Breaks from Led Zeppelin IV (1971) (1 Viewer)

I'm not trying to replace Plant, only trying to have some silly discussion on what might have been in an alternate reality. Given that Plant wrote a lot of the lyrics, obviously without him the songs would have to be all different. It was more an exercise as to if they could have had a different composition of the musicians and still sounded the same and had a similar vibe.
Yea I get it and why I shudder thinking about the sound that would have come out of some of these couplings being suggested. I don't think Zeppelin makes it much past an album or two without their lineup. I've heard Plant do different renditions of various songs and none really appeal to me much but it's interesting to hear a different take on LZ cannon.

How's about Alvin since we're going down a rabbit hole?  :)

I don't know when I will be able to get to the next song, so if people want to guess what the order of the Top 10 will be, have at it. TBH, I don't have a handle on it either, I generally only care about the song for the write up and not ones higher up the food chain. My spreadsheet is a bunch of color-coded numbers, so it's easy not to notice.

My totally random guess about the final rankings:

  1. When the Levee Breaks
  2. Immigrant Song
  3. Ramble On
  4. Stairway to Heaven
  5. Whole Lotta Love
  6. Dazed and Confused
  7. Kashmir
  8. Black Dog
  9. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
  10. Over the Hills and Far Away

I believe I have the top 10 worked out now so I won't guess.  I'll just say that is a killer 10 songs - I could listen to those 10 songs on a loop and be happy.

My totally random guess about the final rankings:

  1. When the Levee Breaks
  2. Immigrant Song
  3. Ramble On

  5. Whole Lotta Love
  6. Dazed and Confused
  7. Kashmir
  8. Black Dog

4. Kashmir

5. Over the Hills and Far Away

6. Dazed and Confused

I love Good Times and could have easily ranked it in my 25. Truth be told I could have ranked the entire first album.

I've been been stuck at 4 songs left for a few songs. I'm guessing that won't last much longer. I could be the first one out.

#11 - Good Times Bad Times from Led Zeppelin I (1969)

Appeared On: 41 ballots (out of 62 . . . 66.1%)
Total Points: 534 points (out of 1,550 possible points . . .  34.5%)
The song that launched it all.  I was given Led Zep 1 around age 13 by my Dad.  I was definitely familiar with some of their catalog already, certainly Stairway, among others, but had never heard this album in its entirety prior.

This will always be my favorite album, I do like it from start to finish and Good Times Bad Times is the perfect song to kick it off.

PM me your guess at the order.

So close!

Anyway, instead of posting a guess I will ignore my submitted list and re-rank these ten:

  1. When The Levee Breaks
  2. Stairway To Heaven
  3. Kashmir
  4. Ramble On
  5. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
  6. Immigrant Song
  7. Over The Hills And Far Away
  8. Whole Lotta Love
  9. Black Dog
  10. Dazed And Confused

If you ever played Mastermind, you have two songs in the right spots. But I am not going to reply to everyone's guesses, and I won't be able to keep up should people guess more than once.

I love Good Times and could have easily ranked it in my 25. Truth be told I could have ranked the entire first album.

I've been been stuck at 4 songs left for a few songs. I'm guessing that won't last much longer. I could be the first one out.
You'll be down to three after the next song, and you will not be the first one out.

9)

22) Ten Years Gone (22)

23) In the Light (29)

24) Rock and Roll (14)

25) Out on the Tiles (56)

Top 25 consensus songs I didn't rank:

Misty Mountain Hop
Hey, Hey, What Can I Do
The Song Remains the Same
The Ocean
Over the Hills and Far Away (big regret)
Living Loving Maid/Heartbreaker
What is and What Should Never Be

Doing this today after listening to a lot over the last couple months since this started, these are the changes I'd make that are relatively significant.

1)  No Quarter jumps swaps spots with Battle of Evermore (and maybe a spot higher)

2)  Over the Hills and Far Away slots in at #9 for me.  Big omission.

3)  Going to California drops at least 5-6 spots

4)  Out on the Tiles or In the Light drops out of the top 25.  Depends on the day.

5)  My #18 song moves up right next to Over the Hills

Never played Mastermind but doesn't sound like im winning
In Mastermind, you try to match the order of a series of pegs by guessing the order and color. One side sets the order, the other side guesses the order. Since I know the answer, I would reveal that you had a number of pegs that were exactly right and a number that were the right colors but in the wrong spots. I haven't played in decades, but I believe that's the jist of it.

Since we already know the 10 songs, there's nothing really left to reveal about that part. Two of your guesses were right. The other 8 songs weren't crazy out of alignment, but not in the right spots nonetheless.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8. The Ocean - (20)
9. Good Times Bad Times - (11)
10. What Is And What Should Never Be - (16)
11. Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid (She's Just A Woman)    - (12)
12. Communication Breakdown - (18)
13. The Battle Of Evermore - (21)
14. Going to California - (13)
15.
16.
17. Dancing Days - (41)
18. Thank You - (30)
19. Hey, Hey, What Can I Do - (24)
20. Houses Of the Holy - (37)
21.
22. Trampled Under Foot - (31)
23. Four Sticks - (53)
24. Gallows Pole - (36)
25. Misty Mountain Hop - (25)

My lowest 2 ranked songs will be the next two songs off the board.  I'll have my top 7 and #15 in the top 8 songs and I'm a little shocked about my song #15 making it that high.

  • Biggest regret leaving out - I'm like Steve Kornacki and I'm calling it - Ten Years Gone is the song I should have included
  • Biggest regret ranking - Trampled Under Foot - the more I listen to this the more the clavinet irritates me
  • After reflecting on the banjo in Gallows Pole, I'm gonna allow it and think I would move it in to my top 20, maybe top 15 - just a great song

After listening to a ton of LZ for months, it was refreshing the other day to pop in a collection of 80's new wave songs while I was out driving. Not so much that any of those songs were better, they got points for NOT being Zeppelin songs. I had the same problem doing the U2 rankings. Near the end, it got to the point where any time I heard U2 I had to turn it off.

Did you just overlook it or had it out of your rankings?  I would move it up in my list some from #21 but wouldn't crack my top 10.
It was one of those songs that I just never paid attention to very much when it came on.  A lot of times I'd just skip it.  I just never really got into it.  I've since listened to it all the way through and realized how great it is and how much I was enjoying it and kept going back to it.  It's also been one of those songs that's gotten stuck in my head and I don't mind it at all.

That's what's been interesting about this exercise.  I've gone back and sought out Over the Hills and No Quarter, for example.  I also find myself barely listening to IV.  I've listened to I and HOTH a whole bunch more.  In particular, LZ I has been played FAR more than any other album.  And I'm still not tired of it.

My top 2 songs are also solidified in those spots.  Still can't get enough of them.

Top 10 are all powerhouses, I don't have any idea how this all shakes out from here:

  • Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
  • Dazed and Confused
  • Ramble On
  • Whole Lotta Love
  • Immigrant Song
  • Black Dog
  • Stairway to Heaven
  • When the Levee Breaks
  • Over the Hills and Far Away
  • Kashmir
I only expected to have 6 of the top 10. Y'all surprised me though. Over The Hills & Far Away making it gives me 7. Well done, all. I think it's #10 though.

I love Good Times and could have easily ranked it in my 25. Truth be told I could have ranked the entire first album.

It's not #10.

Spare me the righteous indignation about me combining these two songs. This has been discussed already. IMO, it did not have much impact on where Heartbreaker ended up ranked, and I only remember one person that voted for LLM and not Heartbreaker. It scored nearly 50 more points than Rock And Roll did at #14. I don’t remember anyone saying they ranked Heartbreaker HIGHER because LLM made it a twofer. Living Loving Maid most likely would have ranked as song #60 plus or minus a couple spots. Heartbreaker did not receive a #1 vote and only saw one second, one third, and six Top 5 votes. It did muster up 15 Top 10 votes and appeared on 37 ballots (most so far). Four of the outside rankers ranked it in their Top 10.
That joker would be me. :bag:   I did have it at 5, though.

My list going into the Top 10:

1.
2.
3. Communication Breakdown (18)

13. How Many More Times (27)
14. The Battle of Evermore (21)

I don't know about anyone else or if it's been brought up, but I don't think it should have been combined.
Maybe, maybe not. I voted it top 5 because you got 2 great songs from my favorite LV album for the price of 1. How couldn't it be top 5?

i expected it to be in the top 25 for this lot of voters, but i didn't think it would nose it's way to the top 10 cusp.
Do you agree the song doesn't "do it" for you?

It seems like a song I should love but I actually always skip past. I have never understood why.

it's a big ball of "meh" for me ... it certainly doesn't beckon me to seek it out, and i will alternately skip it on the shuffle.

i would've kicked that album (career) off with "Communication Breakdown" instead.

Great point, I wonder if it being the first LZ song got it bonus points in the ranking?

I don't care if a song is first, last, etc. I ranked the song 9th, because it is one of my favorites. It's catchy and it rocks.  I love the intro, the guitar riff, the bass and drums (which are great together), and the singing.

Zep would grow as songwriters and musicians over the course of their ten-year career, but “Good Times” shows how their swag was on 100 right from their very first notes as a band
I like this quote. I didn't rank GTBT in my top 25, but I think it is an interesting exercise to compare GTBT to the first song on the first album of other artists. How many are better than GTBT? I can't think of any.

it sounds Muppet-like in comparision to "Black Sabbath", which is the most powerfully emblematic opener in rock history, imo.

Running’ With The Devil certainly doesn’t sukk.

I’d put Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix with Zeppelin on the list of phenomenal debut albums.

and I love Black Sabbath (note:  Dio Sabbath cannot be considered "real Sabbath")
I agree, OT post, but Dio Sabbath set Ronnie up for, to me, possibly 2 of the most mind blowing back to back solo albums I own.  More mind blowing is that they were released just over a year apart in 1983 & 1984.  Holy Diver and Last in Line (on vinyl and in general) play like AC/DC Back in Black where there is no filler songs.

Welcome to the Jungle is on another level, but I think We Die Young is an appropriate comp. Smells Like Teen Spirit may have been the breakthrough grunge hit, but with the benefit of time I think this better exemplifies the intro to the era kinda like this was for Zep's era of rock. At 2 1/2 mins each is clear, concise, and to the point but also provides a comprehensive glimpse into what's to come despite the lack of length in each track.

OP posed "GTBT" as perhaps the greatest opening track on a debut album, i countered with one that, imo, blows it straight to St. Swithin's day - i'll also toss "Holidays in the Sun" (Pistols) & "Blitzkrieg Bop" (Ramones") in the hopper as well - seismic influencers, those.

agreed - but, COTdamn ... IOMMI   :headbang:

Nevermind wasn’t Nirvana’s first album.

Since Dio has been mentioned in this context, Man on the Silver Mountain is a hell of an introduction to Blackmore’s Rainbow.
