Welcome to the Jungle is a great counter. Can't argue that one.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is not the first song of Nirvana's first album, so it doesn't apply here.

I like We Die Young a lot, but GTBT > WDY.

I find it amusing that We Die Young is getting compared in context to Good Times Bad Times.

I love Facelift, and really like We Die Young too,  at this point I don't know if I agree or disagree because it never occurred to me to compare them.

Never occurred to me before it got brought up last night and I started scrolling through artists. I wasn't around when Facelift broke so I obviously wasn't around when I broke either, but my understanding is neither were instant hits. Looking back on both catalogs with hind sight I think what each became can be drawn to the rather simple on the surface 2 1/2 minute opening tracks each put out. I think now knowing what each became made each song better with time than when they first came out, but my understanding of their instant impact could also be woefully inaccurate.

We Die Young is my favorite song by AIC.

For the classic rock artists, I'd probably take Boston's More Than a Feeling and VH's Runnin' with the Devil over Good Times Bad Times. 

Good Times Bad Times is definitely great stuff, regardless.

Man In the Box was the hit that launched Alice in Chains. 

I remember seeing a video on MTV around 1990 and I liked it as soon as I heard it.  Obviously had never heard of Alice in Chains as this was my first exposure to them.  I went and bought Facelift that same week.

Im not sure We Die Young was ever considered a "hit"  Great song though

Pearl Jam came to mind, but Once is track #1 on their debut album; not Even Flow. I MUCH prefer it to Good Times, Bad Times but I think I'm an outlier.

Great call on The Doors though.

Obviously - you're right. I was going off the top of my head which isn't as sharp as it used to be. That's a cool song though also. I'll edit.

His first album was first released in the UK, and Foxy Lady was the first track. (For whatever reason, the tracks were reordered when it was released a few months later in North America.) FL is not high on my list.

That is an absolutely killer debut album, though, definitely one of the few best of all time.

I haven’t had time to play in this thread because I had to commit to my own dumb thread and then take a trip.. but i figured it was gonna turn out totally rando like this.. every fan has all different faves

i was listening to Sugar Mama driving through eastern Oklahoma the other day. I almost hit a dog that was running up the highway so I stopped and picked it up and drove it to Maryland. Tried to think of some good zeppy names but I don’t think it’s gonna happen

I didn't actually post my personal first song, first album list in my previous post, I just gave my ranking of the songs that had been mentioned. Here is my top 10:

1. Welcome to the Jungle - GNR
2. Cult of Personality - Living Colour
3. Good Times Bad Times - Led Zeppelin
4. In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins
5. Once - Pearl Jam
6. This Is a Call - Foo Fighters

Living Colour is a great call. Made me think of one I missed:

The Living Colour and Bad Brains mention made me think of something else. Hell, we have a week until he starts the Top 10 countdown. 

So what about not just best first songs on first albums, but bands/singers whose first song on their first album is your favorite song of theirs?

I'm a huge Living Colour fan and I would say that Cult of Personality is my favorite song. I'm a big Bad Brains fan and Sailin' On is my favorite song of theirs. I could see people thinking that  Welcome to the Jungle is the best Guns N Roses song, or that Running with the Devil is the best Van Halen song, although I would have songs higher on my list for both bands. 

We just saw that no one voted Good Times Bad Times #1. We can see if anyone votes I Saw Her Standing There as their Beatles #1. 

It's a fun thought exercise with lesser bands as well. 

 
Kryptonite on 3 Doors Down's debut album "The Better Life" was an excellent start to an excellent album.

Come on. You're saying you think that is their best song? I like the song, and I like LRB. That song is not close to their best IMO.
