As someone who's pretty new and doesn't post much... not having every thread I open be about Higgs' feelings may be a good place to start getting new people to want to post more.

I'll be 100% honest for me its been the new board upgrade and two reasons in particular.

1. Only 25 topics per page. Fairly recent topics fall off the first page very quickly. Call it laziness or just being used to Google but I RARELY click on the second page of topics. So I look at the smaller page 1 of topics and if I dont see anything that interests me I move on very quickly.

2. The quote bug annoys the heck out of me on my phone. I could go and post in a thread that I replied to last week and my quote from last week still pops up and is impossible to delete. I end up giving up and not posting at all.

Regardless of what people fell abou LHucks, the attitude of the management in allowing people to be Unexcellent to him (and Tim) without repercussions degraded the culture of the community.

His actions were deliberately antagonizing and designed to prevent a generally positive vibe in the FFA.

No. Hucks found a sweet spot in posting style which wasn't ban-able but yet was completely destroying threads. He was that mosquito that keeps circling, never landing long enough to squash. It was masterful but ultimately the only way to ban him was to start a flame war and suck him into it. 

Kinda like the kamakaze pilots.

no kidding.  I once got a week ban because some guy was using profanities and hounding me to death and kept asking the same question over and over. When I said something to the effect of "you obviously are intelligent enough to understand what I've repeated several times" I got a ban. 

When I asked the mod why I got a reply that said "take a break. See you in a week."  I probably should have just extended that indefinitely.

I have a story I could tell. From the chapters of my life, I call it "A good bowl of Neapolitan". It's about this day I had with a brunette, a blond, and red head.  It's an entirely true story and also involves a toothbrush.

You prove my point.  Those same tactics used by Hucks and against Hucks continue to be liberally employed...and, consequently,  the culture is degraded.

I think for me, it is that most of the funny / entertaining individuals have mostly moved on.  Like anything else you read, when the talent that you are used to moves on then you stop coming around as much. 

It used to be funny as #### in here to read posts by Scupper, Pickles, Zilla, Jplvr, Cgrdrjoe, Shuke, BostonFred, Icon, Otis, GM, Tiger Fan etc.  Mostly they are all gone.  GM is still here, but he just seems angry in the majority of his posts.  Tiger Fan posts a bit, but I don't care that much about Pearl Jam to dive into that thread.  I guess Otis is still here, but his effort is about 2% of what it used to be.  I think Capella is funny sometimes, but its not enough to get me here every day.

And on the other side of it, I don't recall a time in the past when there was so much anger and so much name calling.  Some people have the sole purpose here to just be really ugly people in an attempt to piss someone else off.  I don't recall that happening 5 or 10 years ago.  I'm not sure what it is, but a handful of people are basically allowed a run of the house without any consequences.  I think I could get past that is there was a good laugh or two a day around here to offset it.  But there just isn't anymore.  It kinda sucks.

Here's how you make the FFA Great again

  • Make a political only forum.  Moderate threads heavily that if they even contain the word Liberal, Trump, Obama. Only allow Tim to start threads in that forum.
  • Allow photos. Seriously.  It's time.  
  • Use a different board software. This one is horrific.  Admit it has serious flaws and revert to previous versions or just go to a different software.
 
as a long time member, my observations:

-facebook came along in 2004 and I think people enjoy the real time dooshyness of that experience, likely having them reduce posts here.  I do not have a facebook account, but I think the more instant so called 'social media' experiences have eaten into this board.

-long ago I decided the tools here I wanted to talk to on a regular basis, hence Chat MVP designation.  can talk sports, music, food, hum drum, without all the religious and political BS.  I won't have to vote for you or your nephew, I don't have to read about you needing thoughts and prayers. 

-the newest board upgrade is hideous......it freezes my phone, perpetually quotes me from 2005 and doesn't contain enough Page 1 posts to peak my interest.  if I am not here for 2 hours, I may miss some decent threads that have fallen to Page 2.  too lazy to go Page 2, Page 3, etc.  there is likely reason they left Page 1 in the first place I guess.

-right now, page 1 has 8 **official** threads, 6 threads political or religious by nature, 2 wagering threads and 2 all time draft non sense threads.  might be great for all, but of no interest to me.

-when someone does start a thread of interest or is seeking some kind of honest feedback, it's usually a couple of posts until the same shtick surfaces.

-the baseball season just began and with multiple leagues of fbg posters, I have spent most of my time there........to me, it seems the baseball guys have a good sense of humour and I have enjoyed that forum more than the 'fight for all'.

-lastly, many posters 'know' one another, in that they know someone's posts, background and leanings........I don't keep a book on posters (although the one poster I know is curly night, who posts the saddest stuff constantly about cancer) and have very limited recall of what you may have posted....not sure if this creates a cliqueiness, but it seems to breed familiarity, both good and bad.......mostly bad, so the same posters tend to argue with one another.

I come here mostly for sports chatter and to enjoy lighter topics......pretty much to get away from real life, so to speak, if that makes sense.  to get bogged down in chest banging with iFriends on hot button topics seems a waste of time and energy.  there may be some other threads of interest, but if my thoughts are mostly 'why bother?' then, why bother?

 
1.  Too many political threads.  There have always been too many but each election cycle it gets progressively worse.  They clog the boards and people get their panties in a bunch and argue with others that they are never going to convince to believe their point of political view. 

2.  No more good and regular updating of the I-Dating thread.  That used to be a staple around here with guys like Disco Stu (whatever happened to him BTW?)  and others chiming in with their experiences, tips, stories.  With Tinder and other apps out there the stories should be more plentiful and entertaining, not less  - which ties into my next point:

3.  No one has really stepped up to replace the likes of Otis, Woz, etc. when it comes to good stories from guys in their 20's - probably because that demographic doesn't exist on this board any longer.  This board is like the Lakers with Kobe retiring - no one has taken the torch and run with it.  The board has been in perpetual rebuilding mode.  Back in the day, we had Otis and his flight attendant stories (and many others), Woz and his crazy ex and his racist girlfriend.  We don't get any of that now.  Closest we had was No. 16's thread about his girlfriend and the personal trainer but that fizzled out about a year ago after he came to his senses.  About the only quality thread going on now in that domain is Arizona Ron's. 

4.  The good Friday threads are also extinct.  No more random threads like the one we got from Aristocrat and the cat loving girl in his apartment - people used to constantly hit F5 for updates on that one, no Corey the bowing alley bartender threads, Man in Yellow Hat campground stories, etc. 

This place used to have a ton of entertaining threads where people would just go to be entertained, and have some good-natured fun.  But most threads these days devolve into pissing contests that are not worth opening shortly after they get started.

I think I would like to read a lot of these (I didn't arrive until 2011 or so) but, alas, I can't search worth a #### on these boards.

I really hate how there's always one or two judgmental dip####s in the debauchery threads. A dude will type out a great long story about strippers and goats and it never fails, some debbie downer makes some little sniveling drive-by snipe at the guy. "Nice lesson you're teaching your daughter". #### off.
