Because people who have been here for a long time think this place is dying.

Really, I read those old threads. They're hilarious, but people got older.  They just did.

#4 and #5 seems the most difficult for people to do. It also makes most threads unreadable and unenjoyable for those that adhere to the advice in #4 and #5.

I tried just ignoring all the useless people in the politics threads, it doesn't help.

I spend far more time on reddit now than here and reddit sucks too.

There is just an overwhelming hostility here that is toxic.
Pretty much this. I'll check on 5-6 threads here and spend more and more time on Reddit where it is easy to get away from the political crap.

The same clowns here over run every thread with there bickering and political slap fighting. An IP ban of about 5-10 people would make this place infinitely better. Sadly, that won't happen and the spiral will continue.

I agree that some threads can become unreadable at times. When that happens to a thread I like to participate in (the main Trump thread for example) I close it and come back to it a few pages later. Usually that works; whoever was truly annoying has gone away.

Don't hate the playa......

Not according to historians or anyone with a sense of fairness or the concept of treating people of different races or nations as we would like to be treated.
So, everyone who's ancestors were Pawnee or Commanches or Sioux should be ashamed of them, given the amount of murdering they did?  No one can be proud of their ancestors, if this is true.

False equivalency. Never have seen one respected historian equate what Europeans did to the indigenous people here with inter-tribal warfare.

Hey look, they're doing it here now! What a shock!

Hard not to when they immediately start from the standpoint of knowing a posters history or referencing things that happened in this forum eons ago. And they don't fool anyone with the claim they have been lurking for years but now just decided to start posting
Nah, you follow 1-2 guys around and whine about aliases.  You never whine about a liberal alias.  For example, in this thread yesterday Dedfin was talking about stuff happening from Day 1 here at FBG.  He's been around 9 months.  Do you think he's been lurking since 2003 and decided to register last summer?

so, as long as they didn't kill as MANY, it's ok?   Or is that it's ok, as long as it's inter-tribal?
Euros were number one at killing for half a millennium. It was a good run and you all should be ashamed.

All alias accounts should be banned (as per the pinned thread) including those that agree with my point of view.

Hey, I'm just trying to clarify at what number ashamed is demanded?   Seems to me, in the grand scheme of the world, EVERYONE has been a plunderer.  Why no hate for the ####### Norwegians?  Vikings raped and pillaged at the top of the heap for eons (at least until Bud Grant took over...then they were a perennial #2)

I show genuine concern and this is the personal attack I receive?  Good riddance!

ClownCausedChaos3 alias is probably available - maybe you'll be funny the 3rd time around

Liar. No confirmed alias accounts. It was claimed that two mods in the test forum confirmed Tone, but Tone didn't start posting in this forum until after the test forum was defunct, so it was literally impossible for the two mods (who, like Voldemart are never named) to have confirmed anything at that point.

I think there's both the impossibility of banning alias accounts mixed with the fact that some long-standing posters use aliases and is part of their shtick. I don't like when the aliases get angry or creepy right off of the bat. I have not liked the recent wave of aliases running around the board. They're political, and often offensive, even to me. We've had hostility on one side and outright racism on the other. It's bad, and not real.

As far as those who are new earning their stripes, that's fine, but when posters expect newbies to keep up with shtick that's been going on for years and is actually really hard to discern is unreasonable. And then to take it out on the newcomers when they can't keep up, or ask dumb questions or what have you, then you've got a problem attracting members. The sports threads are especially shticky; politics threads less so. I think that's why newcomers are often drawn to the political threads. Of course, arguing is less fun, so it's a cycle. People think those people can't be fun, but they're dealing with topics that aren't, and the other threads are filled with long-standing members shticking it up, which is fine if you're one of those who have been around, less so if you're new.

Anyway, that's about all I got.
In general I try to help out newb posters. I do generally wait a few posts though to see if it is alias shtick or not. They usually give themselves away pretty quickly. But if someone seems like a genuine new poster I have no trouble explaining shtick or why we do things the way we do. I am sure I have been played a few time but who cares really? Better to help and be played than be a ####.

Yeah, you were always more than willing to explain things to me and to play it straight. I try and do the same. Better to get burned than shut off all possibility.

What new posters? I honestly think the FFA doesn't have one genuinely new poster in at least 3 years, possibly longer.

I would disagree. This tendency to view everyone as an alias or whatever is a strange phenomena. I have had new people PM me after I gave them a little help thanking me. Telling me they feel it is hard to break in and so they don't post and when they do they start getting accused of being someone else or not a girl or whatever. We don't do welcome threads like most places. It's considered good etiquette on many sites to introduce yourself with your first post. Here we eat people alive for that.

So we're a kind of insular and paranoid. Then we wonder why we don't see more new posts.

I'm not going to read 16 pages but has anybody mentioned the flattening out of interest in fantasy football in general.  I stopped playing years ago but it seems like the number of leagues at work are way down.  DFS has impacted classic fantasy sports as well, probably negatively (but that's a different thread).

How would you know the FFA exists if not for the entry via fantasy football?  And even if you did, this board is like jumping on a moving freight train.  :tfp:    A pinned welcome noobs thread might help a bit instead of a locked FAQ thread

It's not the size of the threads that matters.

:lmao: at a bunch of dudes that spend all day with insid:e: jokes/references and trolling aliases wondering why new people aren't joining.

As massraider correctly pointed out, message boards are already a dying breed in this day in age.  Post Gen-X folks aren't interested in something unless it's on twitter or snapchat.  They're not interested in message boards.  They're especially not interested in voting on which 80's song was the best on a message board.  They're especially especially not interested in voting on which 80's song was the best on a message board when all the existing folks are wink wink nod nod'ing through the whole thing making dumb ref:e:rences they don't understand.
Great point.

Shoot, I've been on these boards for over a decade, and don't get 90% of the inside references.
