I think there's both the impossibility of banning alias accounts mixed with the fact that some long-standing posters use aliases and is part of their shtick. I don't like when the aliases get angry or creepy right off of the bat. I have not liked the recent wave of aliases running around the board. They're political, and often offensive, even to me. We've had hostility on one side and outright racism on the other. It's bad, and not real.
As far as those who are new earning their stripes, that's fine, but when posters expect newbies to keep up with shtick that's been going on for years and is actually really hard to discern is unreasonable. And then to take it out on the newcomers when they can't keep up, or ask dumb questions or what have you, then you've got a problem attracting members. The sports threads are especially shticky; politics threads less so. I think that's why newcomers are often drawn to the political threads. Of course, arguing is less fun, so it's a cycle. People think those people can't be fun, but they're dealing with topics that aren't, and the other threads are filled with long-standing members shticking it up, which is fine if you're one of those who have been around, less so if you're new.
Anyway, that's about all I got.
