Ok, my rant.....

I love this board and respect and want to here from most on all topics.  This board is great for getting knowledge for free from members that are really good in their fields.  There are no political experts and nor do I want information from people who only want to talk politics.   What is interesting to me is to hear political views from people on this board that I respect already, if that makes sense.  I have no interest in what honks say and that is what has happened here.

The Shark Pool currently has 10 non-pinned threads on the first page.

The limit to topics per page is worse than all of the "benefits" the new software offers combined.

I'd like to see a crackdown on the alias shtick....that we know people here are here on 3-4 different names is laughable IMO if it's one of your rules.  I don't have a problem with a Politics forum either.  If we have a basketball one, why not?  At this point going forward, I am willing to bet all "political" threads are going to be the anti-Trump guys jerking one over how stupid Trump is and the Trump supporters with their heads willfully planted in "lalalalalalalalala.....I can't hear you" shtick just to piss them off.  All the "liberals" are so pissed they can't see straight and no self respecting "conservative" wants anything to do with trying to defend Trump's ineptness.

How do we know if Trump is inept since he is even taken office yet?  As with any president they need at least 2 years before you can judge.

Inept means "clumsy", "without skill" or "amateurish", which is a pretty accurate description of how Donald Trump has performed in debates, in interviews, on Twitter, and with some of his business ventures (e.g., Trump University), IMO.

Of course I will withhold judgment on whether Trump is also inept at running the country.

This requires what?

Moderation.

Banishing any threads that have political overtones to a separate forum does not really seem like a compromise, more like just getting your way. There are many threads that those of us who follow politics have no interest in, but we just overlook those or scroll past them, and do not find that particularly burdensome.

And again, it is not as cut and dried as you seem to think. There have been several Chick-Fil-A threads in this forum. Some have been just about the food, others have been entirely political in nature, while some have been both. So, do you move all Chick-Fil-A threads into the politics forum or keep them here? Or would it have to be on a case-by-case determination where the mods have to continually monitor the thread to see that any discussion of politics doesn't rear its ugly head?

I have yet to see a thread about a terrorist attack or school shooting that did not immediately or eventually become a heated political discussion. And many major news events have political overtones and that would probably be a moderating nightmare too. In short, I think a politics forum is unworkable.
Right, because you insufferable political ####bags insist going there as soon as possible. Which makes the rest of us unwilling to participate in any topical discussion because we know you're going to drag it into the muck.
:goodposting:

Add in the fact @squistion is the guy that reports anything and everything he disagrees with, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Any rule that would significantly reduce Squizz posts - I am all for.

Pretty much everyone feels the same.  He said he'd never want to meet any of us for a beer IRL, I'd buy you guys all a round three times over even if we disagree.  Squisy is all about electrons in a brick and mortar forum, but that reality alludes him.

His twitter feed alone tells me he's inept.

Of course this doesn't mean some things won't get done and get done correctly, but if I were a gambling man I'd wager those things will get done in spite of him or have nothing to do with him.  Just a hunch.

First of all I have no idea how Trump will perform.  Trump is inept in terms he is not polished in being a world class liar like most professional politicians and that is what helped him get elected.

From what I hear, some nazi mod got hi panties in a bunch for being called out about believeing wacko conspiracy theories and crapped all over the FFA

wanna make this place better? hire better people.

Try to look at what the NFL does and do the opposite. That includes accountability. IF a mod screws up, admit it. If you get soething wrong, review it.

Is there any insight from the baseball guys about the impact of the baseball forum on baseball discussion?

I'm not necessarily opposed to a political forum but I'm a little worried that the more casual political posters would just end up ignoring it and there would be the same ten posters in there all the time.

This may be my own bias as a politics nerd but I sorta feel like politics is a broad enough subject that a lot of folks have things to say.  I'd also add that the 2016 election was one of the most extraordinary events of my life, I'd expect things to simmer down a bit going forward.
yes, i think a baseball sub-forum was a terrible (or at least, dumb) move. it creates a ghetto-ization of the topic. The subject-geeks keep going, but you miss out on the casual observer/fan viewpoint. While perhaps not a big deal for baseball, it would be much worse for a subject like politics.

Now, more than ever in my lifetime, politics is a subject that begs for more moderate/temperate takes, not fewer.

p.s. to bostonfred's point, the Baseball forum was created after a flurry of separate baseball-related topics were created during a single few-days period - topics which could have easily been lumped into a single thread (and are indeed now lumped into catch-all threads in the Baseball forum)

While I agree with this, the FFA seems relatively intolerant to this notion.  I can't think of the last time a topic was actually discussed.  It's all insults and a rush to define one as "left" / "right" or "conservative" / "liberal".  "If you're not with me, you're against me" could easily be the subtitle of every political thread in recent memory.  There is no incentive for moderates to join the conversation these days.  Fortunately, there's a good number of moderates who post despite this culture, but they are usually overrun with the :hophead:  from the other two groups.

Below are the specific rules of a political subforum I sometimes look at and they seem to work well.  These are over and above the general forum rules which are fairly similar to the rules here although with more consistent moderating.  The point of these is to reduce ****posting like single emoticon posts and other worthless posts.

No cheerleading: Don't try to shut down a debate. Popular examples include "Don't listen to him, he's crazy," "Everyone else agrees with me," and "Yeah, this guy has it right."

No Parting shots: Don't announce that you're leaving or done arguing because everyone else is wrong and dumb. Suck it up and leave with dignity or stick around and try to prove everyone else is dumb.

Effort Being Met with No Effort Is Bad: If someone puts a lot of effort into a post or rebuttal, don't disregard it without good reason. This is subject to a lot of interpretation.

Catch-all: ####ty posts are against the rules. What's a ####ty post? That's up to the mods to decide. If you can't figure out what rule you broke, it's this one. Your post was ####ty.

I miss political BS being banned. seems like the uber partisan hacks have taken to ####ting in every possible thread.

Not sure who is worse, squiz or ctsu.  Both clearly have a fondness for each other.  We all clearly would be better off if they spent more time watching pidgeon porn together in mom's basement instead of polluting threads over here.

Well, I'm not aware of squizz welshing on any bets with members on the board, so I think we have a clear winner in this H2H matchup on that basis alone.

I thought Henry and I had a more than reasonable conversation and people were actually commenting on how reasonable it was.  Perhaps I was mistaken.

Honestly I don't think there are more than handful of people on either side who cause trouble in the political threads and there is usually good conversation going on around it. Maybe I'm just not as sensitive to some of the sniping but I've never once used report or put someone on ignore in all the years posting here. It's a private board so I respect the right of you guys to moderate it how you see fit but it's disappointing to see this happen.

Not gonna lie - really thought Dodds blew the place up.
Maybe he did, but the fact that Bruce Dickenson DIDN'T get banned or suspended for months defies all logic.  Some guy gets banned for posting an emoticon but one guy goes off and CLEARLY has an unexcellent post by ANY standard and he goes as free as bird (pidgeon?).  No penalty whatsoever.
