Now that we are through the holidays, we are back to the 2 week schedule for these.  I posted in the title when votes are due.  I think a 2 week schedule will miss Labor Day, so we will stick to that unless something comes up, and maybe do one or two 3 week polls over the winter holidays.

This is a tough tough year. I was 14 at the time. I have so many movies I like and love.....literally have to work a list down from 40 plus movies here easy.

was it @Todem that said this was the best year for movies ever?

It will be an interesting mix for sure and I am curious what will take the top spot here.   I think a good chunk of my list and votes are set in stone, but I sill want to get to a few that I haven't seen:  Amadeus, Killing Fields, and Paris Texas.   Once Upon A Time in America is one I also haven't seen, but I doubt I will pop that one in based on theme and running time.  There are some that I want to re-watch as well.

I'm good on the low brow stuff, but I think this is the first year that I have not seen a single one of the Best Picture nominees.  Have some watching to do.

You are a little older than I am, but this is the start of my sweet spot for going to and loving movies.  I would have been 9, but vividly remember seeing Gremlins, Karate Kid, Last Starfighter, and Ghostbusters in our small town theater.   For me the interesting thing on re-watches is really thinking about what actually holds up and what is clouded by nostalgia.  It's been a bit since I have seen Gremlins, but IMO KK, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop hold up but stuff like Neverending Story, Sixteen Candles, and Nerds don't as much.

Then I have to decide how to grade out stuff I love now like Stop Making Sense, Spinal Tap, Blood Simple, and others vs. the movies of my youth...

Same here. Some of the movies are a lot of nostalgia. I am ranking based on pure enjoyment and not so much about Oscar worthy. I was 14. A lot of my memories are how I felt about it when I saw it in the theater (or on VHS). All the movies I will have on my list though, are flicks I still watch and love to this day. But I do have to go through 42 films which I jotted down....so we have to think about some things.

if they had cast Mozart better (Tim Curry was the right kind of brilliant in the play) Amadeus would be my favorite movie of all time

I get that, and I'm not either.  This just one of the first years where this clash of loves as a kid vs. mixing in some loves as an adult has taken place.  I just find it interesting to see how some of these hold up and how I am going to decide what gets left behind.

In the other thread I hinted that after 1984, the next year we are tackling is the best year for movies in the last 2 decades.  So....what year is that?

My first pass quick list of for sure movies that will get points from me:

Terminator, Gremlins, Beverly HIlls Cop, Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, Blood Simple, Stop Making Sense, This Is Spinal Tap,

I listed the stuff I want to watch new above, and some others that are on deck for a re-watch or are borderline movies after the above:

Red Dawn, Last Starfighter, Nerds, Sixteen Candles, Nightmare on Elm Street, Footloose, Starman, Police Academy.

Watched Sixteen Candles for the first time a couple months ago. Yuck. I missed the boat on that one back in the 80's and it's too late now.

I used to love it, but this is one that really doesn't hold up that well and as I stared at the list I just posted, it's probably the easiest cut.  Jake is kind of a ########, and you gotta love the gong every time they say Long Duck Dong's name...

It was hinted around in the last thread about how you view movies through a 2018 lens and if it effects how you like it.  Some of these 80s movies or scenes from them are cringe-worthy now.  I posted a couple from Sixteen Candles, we have the nerd rape scene in Revenge of the Nerds, a lot of gay-panic jokes, and other examples.

I think I am in the middle on this.  I am not going to call for a ban on these movies because they contain this stuff, and think we should have some historical perspective like 80s said in another thread.  On the flip side, I don't think the movie will stay at the top of my lists if they have some of that stuff that whittles away at the quality of the movie.

2012, maybe?  I think that had a lot.
Nope, although it did have some quality stuff.

I think I am a much bigger fan of a couple of the movies from the year than others, so it might cloud my love, but next up will be 2007.

There Will Be Blood, No Country, and Zodiac I have as 3 of the best in the decade.  The Orphanage might be the best horror movie of the decade, and then adding in others like Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Assassination of Jessie James, Into the Wild, Hot Fuzz, Sunshine, 4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days, King of Kong, The Simpsons movie, Persepolis, Superbad.

Amadeus is one of the best films of the 80s but I am a sucker for classical music. It's really good though and not the kind of period piece telling of Mozart's life that a more predictable movie woild be. It's really about a lunatic's twisted fued with God and the mystery surrounding his role in Mozart's death.

I had a big long response but I need to save it for the 07 thread.

That one has been on my watch list, but I haven't gotten around to it yet for some reason.  I don't think I've ever come across it On Demand or on TV.  I was thinking about it recently when Forman passed away, and looking forward to this one.

Excellent point. It is beautiful and despite the typical biopic period piece running time, it never feels long. Sadly we lost the great Milo Forman this year.

I've seen all but Places in the Heart, and I have no desire to catch up on that one.  I do think the other four are worth seeing, especially The Killing Fields and Amadeus.

Once Upon a Time in America is absolutely worth seeing.  If you can, try to find the European Cut (which I have on DVD).  Blows away the U.S. theatrical version.

This is going to be the internal battle here - nostalgia vs quality.

I'll personally lean towards quality but with some guilty pleasures thrown in.

And if you go the other way... so be it.  No wrong approach here as long as you have fun.

Debate point for the thread - Johnny Dangerously is going to be in the top 5, so that isn't the issue, but here's the debate - was that Michael Keaton's best role?

Fight me.

I say it is.

Back in my wheelhouse with by far my favorite overall year for movies.  I would give all of the movies below 30 points if I could.  1984 was the year I started to regularly go to movies with my grade school friends, and all of the movies below pretty much defined the movie-going experience for me.  Ghostbusters remains a top 5 overall movie for me and Karate Kid is easily top 10.  I love these movies.  No other single year gives me as much movie-going nostalgia as 1984.

Ghostbusters - 30

The Karate Kid - 30

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - 30

Gremlins - 30

The Neverending Story - 25

The Terminator - 15

Nightmare on Elm Street - 10

Beverly Hills Cop - 10

Police Academy - 10

Revenge of the Nerds - 10

I am sure it is, it's just that when I looked at it, the movie has too many of my movie mental blocks to get over:

- gangsters

- Joe Pesci

- almost 4 hour run time.

I could just about re-watch CHUD, Footloose, AND Breakin' if that amount of time. ;)

nice list, but an '84 list without "Spinal Tap" is no list.

I can't think of "Stop Making Sense" without thinking of the Documentary Now! episode satirizing it.  The whole Documentary Now! series is one of the best things on TV.

I am right there with you, but I have them flip-flopped.  KK has overtaken most 80s movies as I have gotten older and had kids, mostly as I connect more to the pseudo father/son relationship in that movie and there isn't dated f/x that hold it back.

'84 is so good, but I do wish I could mix in a few from '85 to have one uber-year for movies from my youth.  Bring in some BttF and Goonies.  (and maybe Teen Wolf :bag:
