FFA Movie Poll - 1996 Lists due 9/16 (1 Viewer)

Here is what we will do.... 

1.  PM me a list - Please do this even if you want to post your list in the thread.  

2.  You must list a minimum of 10 movies, and a maximum of 20.

3. You have 200 points to distribute to your list. 

4.  Maximum points a movie can get is 30.  

5.  You can also simply post your top 10-20 movies in order and they will be awarded points in a descending order from 19-1.

6.  We are only doing movies that have a theater release from 1996.

7.  NO PORN! , but other than that, there are no genre restrictions - comedy, horror, documentary, foreign, etc..

8.  We will use Wikipedia  for release dates, and remember, this is first theater release, NOT just U.S. release.

What are people thinking for this year?  Like I posted in the other thread, it's not nearly as top heavy as a year like 2007 for me, but I wrote down a ton of movies for this year that would be 10-20pt movies.   My initial list on first pass was something like:

Felt the strongest about:

Fargo, Sling Blade, When we Were Kings, Scream, Kingpin, The Cable Guy, Shine

Next Tier  (memory gets a little foggier with these, and want to get some re-watches in)

ID4, The Birdcage, Mission Impossible, People vs. Larry Flynt, Swingers, The Rock, From Dusk 'til Dawn, Happy Gilmore, The Ghost and the Darkness,  Long Kiss Goodnight, Romeo + Juliet, The Craft, Frighteners, Tin Cup, Bottle Rocket, Freeway, Crash, A Time to Kill, Sleepers, Twister

Remember not liking, but have only seen once.  I think they will score highly, and want to re-watch for the poll:

Trainspotting, Beautiful Girls

New ones to check out:

Lone Star, The Crucible, The Ghosts of Mississippi, Set It Off, Secrets & Lies, Kolya, Bound

I havne't looked through anything yet so will just comment on your list.  The bold are my favorites, though I like some of the others as well.  As I think we've discussed elsewhere, When We Were Kings is one of my top documentaries of all time.  And Lone Star is a must see.

I was doing a ton of movie-watching during this period so should be able to make up for my poor showing in the 1978 movies.

Mr. krista decided to do a Big Night dinner at our house when we lived in Memphis.  Goal was to have people passed out from food intake like in the movie, and it was successful.  He did a 12-course Italian meal for ten people.  I made one of the 12 courses; otherwise all him.  It was insane.  Anyway, love that movie.  One of my favorite movie endings.

When We Were Kings is fantastic, and looking at my list, it might be the top point getter.

Breaking the Waves is a movie that I love and will give high points, but I have a hard time recommending to anyone else.

Fargo, Lone Star, When We Were Kings, Trainspotting, and Bottle Rocket among my favorites for the year.  Probably going to have more popcorn than I do for most years (maybe because I was in high school this year) -- ID4, Scream, Happy Gilmore, Twister, Beavis & Butthead Do America, That Thing You Do, Swingers, and Black Sheep among those vying for points.  Also liked Evita, Michael Collins, and A Time to Kill.  

I haven't seen some of the critically acclaimed dramas like Sling Blade, Shine, The English Patient, Big Night, or Breaking The Waves.  Going to have try to get some of those in.

A nice deep year. I am probably one of the few here that really liked The English Patient. Fargo was better but I have no issue with EP as Best Picture winner.

I know a guy that is JUST LIKE the old guy in this exchange...

Mr. Mohra: So, I'm tendin' bar there at Ecklund and Swedlin's last Tuesday, and this little guy's drinkin' and he says, "So where can a guy find some action? I'm goin' crazy out there at the lake." Mr. Mohra: Well... Ecklund & Swedlin's, that's closer ta Moose Lake, so I made that assumption. 

Officer Olson: Oh sure. 

Mr. Mohra: So, ya know, he's drinkin', so I don't think a whole great deal of it, but Mrs. Mohra heard about the homicides down here last week and she thought I should call it in. So... I called it in. End o' story. 

Officer Olson: What'd this guy look like, anyway? 

Mr. Mohra: Oh, he was a little guy... Kinda funny lookin'. 

Officer Olson: Uh-huh. In what way? 

Mr. Mohra: Oh, just in a general kinda way.

yeah- saw it in the theater... there's a scene or scenes with a cave? I just wanted them all to crawl into that cave and stay there. really disliked this thing in spite of some decent acting.

 
and especially considering that list I just generated... SOOOOOOO many good to great films this year. the english patient... yuck.

 
Love Lawrence of Arabia, think its one of the truly great epics ever filmed. But that is only one side of my equation.

 
I won't argue opinions and I know hating The English Patient is a popular opinion (even was an episode of Seinfeld) but it's full of great actors, it looks beautiful, has some mystery and action related to the war. It's a good movie IMO. I've seen it recently too and it held up. Flame away.

 
Oh Ill never flame you for liking the movie, we have opposite opinions is all.  I find EP to be a great tonic to vegetate by, on par with melatonin.

 
I recently re-watched "Grace of my Heart", a 1996 film about a songwriter whose story has similarities with Carole King's career.  It's held up pretty well over the decades in large part due to strong performances from Illeana Douglas as the lead and John Turturro playing a less crazy Phil Spectoresque pop impresario.

It's kind of a chick flick so I don't expect it'll get many votes but I'd still recommend it to the music :nerd: folks.  The movie is immersed in the world of 1960s music from the Brill Building to the LA singer/songwriter scene.  There are some excellent original songs, lots of in-joke references to real events and some fun cameos (e.g. J. Mascis, Redd Kross).  The plot lags a bit in the final third as it struggles to bring Denise/Carole's story to a happy ending.

saw that - pretty decent. i had dealings in the Brill Building backinaday. certainly more realistic than Almost Famous....

 
Watched the first half of The English Patient last night, and I'm going with the Seinfeld view.  Not sure if I'll even bother finishing it.

I will be honest - I did have a random list, but I have been trying to spread it out a bit so we aren't hammering a decade too much.  Next up we owe another from the 00s.  It's my birthday during this next poll, and I have strong feelings about some 2001 movies, so we will be doing that year.  I think after that I am going to do an older decade or 1/2 decade, and then start a pattern so people mildly know what to expect.  

What it will probably be:  older decade - 70s - 80s - 90s - 00s, and then go back to 70s and repeat the last 4 in a pattern.  I will randomize the years we do when we get to the decade, but at least we kinda know what's coming up.  We owe 5 old decades ( 2 halves of 60s, one half of 50s, 40s, pre0-40s), and a few years from this decade (2011, 2012, 2013) that I will still sprinkle in as we go along as well.  The plan is to do the year 5 years in the past during Oscar week, so we will do 2014 in February (or whenever those things air).

This one might have been the beginning and the end of the wife picking out movies and/or watching movies with me.  It was one of her faves - she loves Mr. Fiennes - and I ended up twitchy for the first hour and then falling asleep.

While I was watching The Big Sleep and setting the DVR to record Key Largo tonight, my wife informed me that I needed to stop recording old movies because she was tired of our DVR looking like that of an 80 year old. So, I sympathize.
