FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (7 Viewers)

She didn’t dislike Hereditary, just doubt it’ll ever get requested for a second viewing.  A somewhat recent entry to this genre, we both loved The Haunting of Hill House.

There was a short film (5-10 minutes max) a few years back with no dialogue showing a lady getting ready for bed and seeing shadowy figure near where lights were just turned off, ended with demon creature in her bed I think.  Pretty certain it won some indie film awards and was eventually used as the premise for a full length film.  Anyone know what I’m thinking of and if the big screen movie turned out good?  The short was pretty scary and well done
I know Mama was based on a short film similar to this.

The Dark is another one. I'm not sure that the dark was made into a feature film though.

Put me in the camp of really enjoying Midsommar. Lots to praise about this film (although I do understand the complaints) but what I really enjoyed was humor throughout the film. This movie was funny. I wasn't expecting a comedy and I felt pretty awkward laughing at certain parts. I think my theater felt the same, there were lots of reserved giggles. It was as if we weren't sure if we were allowed to laugh given how strange the situation was.

Good podcast episode here: a brief review along with an interview with the director and a couple of actors.

Three found footage movies I've seen recently.  These are all on Amazon.

#FollowMe - 3 hot chicks from England go on a California road trip and are never seen again.  This was pretty bad.  There are a huge number of found footage films that follow the same formula.  About an hour or so of absolutely nothing happening, then 20 minutes of the #### hitting the fan.  This falls into that category.  The last 15 minutes are pretty tense and good, but you have to suffer through the pointless first hour.  The three girls, while wonderful eye candy, are annoying as all hell.

The Hunted - Two hunters trying to start up a show on hunting record one of their hunting trips, but something ends up hunting them.  This one was a bit better but still just ok.  Without spoiling too much, the "thing" that is hunting them makes some of the most horrifying noises/screams I've heard in one of these movies.  But there's not a whole lot new happening in this one and nothing that hasn't really been done before.

Sanitorium - A group that has a ghost hunting show investigates an abandoned asylum.  Wow, how original, right?  Well, the thing with found footage is that it's not always about an original idea.  Sometimes an old idea can be good if done properly and this is one of those, barely.   The acting and characters aren't great, but what I particularly liked about this one is that it doesn't spend a whole lot of time showing the ghosts do dumb things like opening a door or moving a chair.  When the ghosts manifest, they are menacing from the start.  You really get the sense that this a pissed off, deadly apparition. Worth a rental.

We watched Carrie last night. It had been over 30 years since we'd seen it. What a great movie! Most Stephen King adaptations are ill regarded but this flick just kicks ### ( King's first book). Excellent acting, Spacek and Piper Laurie (Carrie's mother) are just phenomenal. De Palma delivers one of his best directing jobs and uses Hitchcockian sound effects similar to Psycho's shower scene.

I didn't realize who well critically it did (and does). Rated in many publications as one of the top horror films of all time. Holds up extremely well as a timeless classic!

Carrie is a all-time horror movie for me too.  I am guessing if we made an aggregate list around these parts a common theme would develop at the top - good acting, characters that you care about so there is more dread when they are in peril, buildup of terror vs. jump scares, etc..

Lights out and not as good as the short

@Waingro - do you listen to any movie or horror podcasts currently?
Nothing horror related but for movies, you can’t go wrong with The /Filmast and /Film Daily.

Besides those two, Now Playing is really good for new releases. 1-2 hour episodes that dive right into the review.

I’ve checked out a few episodes of Pop Culture Leftovers as well. They also review new releases but will jump around to other topics. They generally release 5 hour episodes and can a bit all over the place.

Horror related, this podcast is doing a Stephen King Retrospective Series and they've just release an episode to review The Mist, really awesome movie.

I might have to hop back on.  I listened to most of them as they were going through the horror series at the start, but I seemed to hit a wall with them as far as the stuff they were reviewing.

I bring it up a lot, but The Faculty of Horror might be my favorite horror movie podcast.   2 Canadian women doing the reviews.   I just find the perspective interesting and they are smart and well spoken.  For non-horror, my fave is probably The Cine-Files.  Ilov80s and I are always bringing this one up to try to get more to listen.  Both work in the business and one I believe teaches in Cali.  Wide variety of movies and they go in depth and give good background on the movies they talk about.

I am trying to find Now Playing. It looks like they have every retrospective they have done as separate podcasts. Is there a main podcast to subscribe to that I am not seeing?  I also don't see the Stephen King retrospective?

I don't think there's a single Stephen King episode. Looks like you're right, they just release separate episodes for each review.

Here's a list
http://podcast.nowplayingpodcast.com/category/stephen-king/

I searched Now Playing Stephen King and found a retrospective on there. The most recent looks to be from 2016. I did subscribe to it so maybe the new ones will show up.
I scrolled through.  I see Thinner and The Mist from this year.  They also did the new Pet Semetary, but for their retrospectives they usually go in order so that seemed odd.

Watched this last night with the family. It had its moments I must say. The acting was pretty bad, but it was pretty creepy. My biggest complaint is it felt like a shot for shot rip-off of Grave Encounters. which is a movie we really liked.

Make sure you catch "All Hallows Eve" on Amazon Prime.
My son and I watched this last night. Holy freaking ***t!!! Excellent. I love anthology horror movies like Trick R Treat and several other 70’s anthology type horror movies (as well as Creepshow of course) and this was some freaky goodness. Great recommendation.

Highly recommend as well.

Added this one to the watchlist.   I didn't know it was an anthology, I had just been skipping over it b/c the cover looked a little cheesy.

Pretty stoked about Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends (2020 and 2021).

Halloween 2018 was a strong entry and nice alternative arc.

So we have 3 different story arcs now. Crazy. LOL.

This one was hit or miss for my wife and I. The first two stories really were meh.....but the last story and the end were well done.

Just saw Midsommer last Saturday. I haven't seen Hereditary yet, but everyone tells me it's great. This is the same director. Briefly, this movie is weird, this movie is really long, and I loved it. A beautiful movie. Really ####ed up. It seems like this director is a fan of David Lynch.

Watched The Intruder with Dennis Quaid. Movie was okay pretty predictable. I only finished it because Megan Good is so hot. Damn

also couldn’t stand her husband in the film I wanted to punch his face through the tv

Goodnight Mommy

Did someone here recommend this one? Interesting horror/suspense film about twins who suspect their mother is not really their mother after coming back from some facial surgery. Not bad 3.5/5

We watched "Us" the other week. I really liked it. Lupita Nyong'o was very good. Some good tense moments throughout. The ending wrapped up well enough for me.

Didn't love it quite as much as "Get Out" but I freaking love Jordan Peele. Breath of fresh air in the thriller/horror genre.

I was extremely disappointed with "Us". He also gave away the entire twist of the movie by showing the VHS tapes at the start of the flick.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

PG-13

I was hyped to watch this and a little disappointed it wasn't very scary. I didn't realize it wasn't rated r until I was already into the film

one of those movies with many stories involved that all tie together. its not very scary but its entertaining. id probably watch this again around Halloween and add it to the mix. its more of a mystery (scooby doo) horror movie.

worth a watch but don't expect to be scurrd

@Big League Chew - how would it be for that demographic?  I was thinking about taking my son to it (12 yo).  We've watched a few Pg-13 horror movies and he's been fine so far - A Quiet Place, Happy Death Day, Sixth Sense, etc..

Annabelle Comes Home

watched this one last night & thought it wasnt as good as the first anabelle. less jump scares - but there is more of a variety of 'monster/ghosts' not the typical Anabelle & the Nun running the show. the entire movie takes place in the Warrens house while the parents are gone. i dont think id intentionally watch this one again but if it was on and im flipping through the channels id stop

id probably watch the pg13 Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) again before i watch this.

4.9/10

Who is it that does the 31 in 31 horror movies for October?

The movie club in the FFA got me thinking - would there be any interest in trying to do a group 31 in 31 with movies that would be available on the streaming services?  Not mandatory or anything, but trying to get a collective list of 31 movies for the Halloween season would be fun, and then people would participate in however many they can.  Just thought it might be a fun idea for this year and an interesting way to get people exposed to some new horror they might not have seen.
