FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (7 Viewers)

Watched VHS . Not sure I got it and I am not sure there was anything to get. I felt like I had just been surfing You tube for messed up videos. I am not sure what the plot to the movie was or how they made two more?

No doubt. I think I like the randomness of the vignettes. There are some pretty funny scenes in all of them.

It's an anthology movie.  They loosely try to tie them together with some kind of framing plot but that's never the point.  The individual shorts are the point and some of them on the first V/H/S are pretty good.  Mainly the one with the Succubus and to a lesser extent the honeymoon one.  V/H/S 2 is better overall.

Good call. I was at a free advanced screening and my expectations were low. I think the producers were shooting for a fun dumb ride and they pretty much accomplished it.
My daughter and mother (both horror movie connoisseurs) went to see IT Chapter 2 last weekend.  They said it was laughably bad.

Midsommar. Put me firmly in the WTF category. Easily the most stupidest thing I've done in quite a while spending two and a half hours of my life on this. 1/10

Watched Haunt last night on PPV.  Eli Roth flick about college kids going into an extreme haunted house.  My family really liked it--lots of scary stuff and, being a Roth movie, you know you are going to get a ton of gore and over the top kills. Really enjoyed it.

I enjoyed VHS2

These VHS movies are pretty interesting. I have liked them both but I doubt I could tell you what they were about or even what happened in the movie. I find that with in a fairly short amount of time I have forgotten what I saw. Its very much a simulation of surfing youtube videos.

Anyone watch the first episode of the new Creep show series?

I liked it quite a bit. I was surprised by all of the Stephen King easter eggs. I'm sure I missed a few but there was a ton.

Finishing it now. Seems pretty obvious with full of stupid metaphors. I can only imagine what a theater full of people thought about this movie. Lol

Watched it last night.   Thought it was better than Hereditary, but I hated Hereditary.   Heavy-handed, predictable and unnecessarily long.

The one with the cult in Indonesia was pretty good.  Best short of the VHS series.

I think what's great about the V/H/S series is that short format works perfect for most found footage type films.  Most found footage consists of 1 hour of nothing much happening and then 20-30 minutes of stuff happening.  Since each short in V/H/s is like 20 minutes max, you end up with none of the filler.

Alright, I narrowed down my list to try.  I only got one list, and most of the stuff on there I didn't see as a streaming option, so I am going to wing it.  For my list, I wanted most of the 31 to be movies that I haven't seen and I could get on my streaming subscriptions I have only seen 4 on the list, and 1 of those I barely remember.  We have:

Netflix:   Autopsy of Jane Doe, Terrifier, The Apostle, Train to Busan, Creep, Ravenous (foreign zombie movie)

Hulu:  Evil Dead, What We Become, The Canal, Pumpkinhead, Baskin, Tragedy Girls, My Bloody Valentine

Prime:  Exorcist 3, Deep Red, Alice Sweet Alice, 31, Slumber Party Massacre, Starry Eyes

Kanopy:  Trouble Every Day, Day of the Dead, Don't Look Now, Black Sunday, Let the Right One In

Shudder:  Mandy, Tigers Are Not Afraid, Revenge, Re-Animator, Audition, The Changeling

Bluray:  American Werewolf in London

I will shuffle the list and see what I can get to.

Oh boy - started off the month with some 80s cheese and My Bloody Valentine.   I had fun with it, and it really is a pretty interesting concept for a horror movie/slasher, but it is a step down from the other top slashers from that same time period.  I would give it a 5/10, but I think a point of that is for the interesting take on the genre with the yummy hearts in a box.

Tonight looks like something newer.  I have a day off tomorrow, and starting to feel a little under the weather, so I might knock out a couple of them since I know there will be nights that I won't be able to watch one.

So far I have watched:

It Chapter Two - 7.5/10

Humanoids from the Deep -  Loved this as a kid and still enjoyed the practical FX monster but it definitely wasnt as enjoyable as when I was a kid. - 5.5/10

The Girl Next Door - Jack Ketchum's book was far more disturbing though the film is absolutely hard to watch. Seeing kids do those things is pretty brutal - 6.5/10

The Girl Next Door is so weird.  it starts off with a Lifetime Movie of the Week vibe to it, then it goes to a dark, dark, place.

Watched The Field Guide to Evil. Some of the stories were better than others and the American one was just pure stupid (me thinks it was intentional). 3.5

Really enjoyed the original Tremors.

Liked Bone Tomahawk as well. Solid 8. Good cast. The banter between the male characters was fun. Richard Jenkins was very good in the"sidekick" role.

Is this similar to An American Crime? I saw this on Netflix and it was pretty disturbing.

eta - It may have not been Neflix
I have not seen that but the plot description is pretty much exactly the same.  The Girl Next Door starts off as a lovely movie that seemed to be about a boy who falls in love with the girl who just moved in next door, and then it goes somewhere very dark.  Yes, it is very disturbing.

Got through two more, so I am still on pace.

What We Become:

For a sub-genre as saturated as this one became in the last decade or so, this had some interesting stuff going on for a zombie movie.  I like that it focused on early stages of what was going on, and I liked some of the details of that.  This one is Danish, just to warn people that don't do subtitles, but I would say that's it's worth it.  Not so much scary, but still had some good ideas.  Solid 6/10.

Creep:

I really don't know what to do with this one.  Like the above movie, it had some good stuff and I really like Duplass in just about everything he does.   That said, I do find myself getting bored a lot quicker with found footage type movies than I do with just about anything in the horror genre.   For me to like it, there really has to be something scary or original (Paranormal Activity creeped me out, and something like The Bay was original), and I don't think I got it here.  4/10.

That is one of the horror movies I've recommended the most in the last 10+ years.  I think it's one that people pass over - I know I did for  a long time mostly because I thought the title was dumb.
