FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (2 Viewers)

Doctor Sleep (Max): 2019 sequel to The Shining starring Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson. I liked this a lot. It's adult Danny dealing with his past and trying to help a girl with the shining stay away from The Knot, a group of shiners who kill and feed off of other shiners. Ferguson is always captivating, and I really liked McGregor's very toned-down acting in this. The effects were really great - floating in air scenes in two different circumstances, the smoke, the "cycling" of an aging character... it all looked great. A squashed hand looked weird, but I've never seen a real squashed hand so maybe it's accurate. I thought the movie did a good job of not explaining everything, making allusions to history they didn't show. The ending was good, too. I'm glad I watched this.

I'm still working my way through my month of Max - Maxxxine just landed, Malignant, Sinister, Midsommar, The Strangers, I Saw the TV Glow, and Open Water. I already watched Doctor Sleep, Scream, The Lighthouse, and The Shining, all for the first time.

I Will Never Leave You Alone (Prime PPV)--this movie has been all over my Tiktok feed as one to see and it didn't disappoint. Plot is a guy is in prison for involuntary manslaughter but is getting released early on parole on the condition he spend six nights alone in a haunted house. Did I mention he is mute and can't talk? The movie starts as a typical haunted house flick, but then turns really dark, really fast. There is one scene my wife and I looked at each other and were like there is no way they just went there, but they did and it will stay with you for some time. The movie is depressing, dark and kind of mean and I have to say we were a little  after it.

Since I seem to watch all the obscure horror movies, the next one up is going to be Stream. It is by the Terrifier creators and stars a bunch of recognizable "C list" type actors and actress Danielle Harris, Dee Wallace, Tony Todd. It has an interesting plot and frankly I need to cleanse my palate after last night.

Ok Terrifier 3 was pretty much what I expected.

However this was quite over the top in some regards compared to the last two. Probably the gore fest of gore fest’s.

I thought compared to the second the story was not quite as good and took a while to get going.

Part 2 is still IMO the best of the three films in this series and of course there will be a fourth.

If I had to rank:

1. Part 2
2. Part 1
3. Part 3

Final answer.

I tend to agree. 3 was way over the top as far as gore goes.

Oh yeah ….that was seriously demented…..as demented as Terrifier 3 for sure.

Definitely a more serious tone in terms the movie……demented is fun as long as you go in expecting it.

But man the guys who direct these flicks are really effed up in the head.

That is my upper end gore level. I got through it, but will admit to pausing for breaks a couple times. Nothing I'd want to watch again. It looks like another screen opened up, so I am back on for Terrifier 3 and still haven't seen 2 so I was curious if that is the levels I am going to encounter for 4.5hours this week.

Terrifier 2 was same level as The Sadness…..I would say 3 is also that level…..but the demented nature was unlike anything I have seen for my tolerance level lol.

It’s next level demented and not even the goriest scenes but who he terrifies in a few scenes.

You will know when you see it.

Absolutely the truth. It’s off the charts IMO.

Also, Dylan Clark on YouTube has some great short (5-7min) horror videos. Pretty fun

I am forming my thoughts this morning, but i feel i will be a minority negative review in here for Terrifier 2. Imo The Sadness was a much harder watch.

I watched Terrifier 1 and was suitably icked out but went along with it and thought it did bring the creep and was good. Started 2 and had to tap out 40 mins in, way too gross for me to process. Have no idea how some of you can watch that level of all out nastiness without feeling sick inside. God bless you all, I can't do it.

Started watching Legend of Hill House with my wife, 6 episodes in. Really good so far, hope the payoff is good .
Viking Wolf- Swedish take on werewolves. Low budget special effects and a story you've seen many times before but still kinda liked it.
Escape Room- This was better than expected. Kind of like Cube but with group puzzles
Legend of Hill House - now through 8 episodes and it's getting even better
Was going to watch Escape Room2 but couldn't find a free option.
4) The Menu- really good slow burn with great performances by Fiennes and AT-J. More thriller than horror but classified as a comedy. 7/10
5) Blood Red Sky- A Netflix original so wasn't expecting much, turned out to be pretty good. Other than the kid the acting was good and better than expected effects. Probably 20-30 minutes too long but worth a watch. 6/10
6) Immaculate - Sweeny is great in this religion based horror movie. Good buildup and really liked the last 30 minutes. 7/10
7) The Purge - had never watched any of the Purge series before watching this. The writing/story was a little weak but thought all the actors did well with what they were given. Expected more violence and there was very little gore. Had a short runtime and kept me entertained but not chomping at the bit to watch the rest of the series. 6/10
8) 28 Weeks Later- had only watched this once, back when it first came out and didn't think much of it. Must have been in a weird mood or something because I really liked it this time. Might've been all the shaky camera work because everything else is top notch. The rage zombies are definitely the scariest version of a zombie but do seem easier to kill. 7.5
9) The Conference - what a pleasant surprise this movie was! Swedish slasher/comedy that was well cast and kept me entertained. Dubbed in English but not too distracting. 7.5
10) Late Night With the Devil- was a bit disappointed with this as it seems to get rave reviews. Was still good with great cinematography ,the 70's setting was well done and enjoyed most of the characters. If you're going with the slow burn in your movie you need to stick the ending and this one didn't for me. It would rank higher in a found footage list than a traditional horror list. 6

Terrifier 2:

This one didn't click with me at all, and I was thinking all day to try to explain why that was. I think what it boils down to is that slashers in general are some of my least favorite in horror, and I can handle gore, but am not as interested when that is basically all we are there for. I gave the first one a 7-7.5, so that was something else I was thinking about as well. What I came up with is this:

To me, the best scene in the 4 hours of Terrifier movies I've watched is still the pizza shop scene in 1. To me that was genuinely messed up. Art was super creepy and a little bit funny, and I like the dynamic of people sort of ignoring him and thinking he is just a typical weirdo as he is staring at the girl he is going to stalk. Whether it was intended or not, I took it as there was a little element of choice when she awkwardly accepted the ring. In other scenes I was also creeped out or shocked, like the opening and other scenes in the building - cut in 1/2 and "silence of the lambs". Yes, they were super gory, but to me that gore is more earned. I guess what I was expecting is a lot more of that feeling and build up but with way crazier kills. IMO the only scene in 2 that was like that was the costume shop scene. Instead, to me there was a noticeable difference in tone of the movie and what I got was more of a demented Itchy and Scratchy, magic swords, a lot of nonsense mythology, and a mom that belongs in a Rob Zombie movie. I said it in another post, but what I didn't like about the 80s/90s slashers is we went from being afraid of the villains like in Halloween to cheering them on and them being icons. Sure the kills were graphic, but there are also so many ways to rip and shoot up a body, and if I have to sit through 20+mins of other stuff I find uninteresting, it doesn't effect me much (that could say something about me, I guess). Maybe I am being to harsh and critical but I am giving this one a 3.5/10. My 4/10 is a movie I didn't like, but would recommend to certain people I think would like it. 3/10 is something I dind't like and had to FF, which I will admit to getting bored a couple times and doing last night. :scared:

Another way to put it is IMO foreign movies have been doing this for decades and much more effectively. I asked about The Sadness, but I found that A LOT harder to watch. The gore was more sustained through scenes, and the idea was also freaky that added to the experience. I had to take a couple breaks during that one. I would put others ahead of it as far as more disturbing like Martyrs, Inside, Frontiers, and hell - Human Centipede 2. To be fair, none of those are slashers either and I can't think of any slashers that would provide this level of gore.

I told my son that he gets to pick our movie, no questions asked so I will see Terrifier 3 on Tuesday.

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness - I know most will think this does not belong in the horror thread but it actually IS a horror movie set in the Marvel Universe. It has monsters, sorcerers, witches, zombies, alternate realities, brutal violent kills, jump scares and has Sam Rami's fingerprints all over it

If it was just some random Wizard v. Witch movie with the same plot and devises, it would fit in with Raimi's other horror movies easily. Heck, Bruce Campbell even makes a memorable cameo.

This is one of my favorite MCU movies - ( know that makes me an outlier) but it's a fun and creepy movie with some real surprises and stunning visuals.

I think it's a really good movie and one of the best Marvels - probably top 3.

This seems a good place to ask this question. My 9 year old, who hasn't seen a real horror movie, is adamant about hosting a party and watch one with his friends. The hard part is, which movie? He's aware of the slasher/killer movies, which I don't think are quite appropriate, and Shaun of the Dead. I've personally been advocating for Poltergeist. Now I'm starting to wonder if that is even too severe.

Any thoughts on entry level titles?

Over the weekend saw Cloverfield with my teen girls (who loved it) and Cannibal Holocaust on my own of course. I always had a soft spot for Cloverfield, the marketing was one of the first to really make use of the internet and as a Godzilla fan, it was cool to see a serious take on monster destroys city. I knew of Cannibal Holocaust as I had seen the Green Inferno a few weeks back. Definitely not for the faint of heart and will never watch it again, but as the original found footage movie, it was interesting to read how it played out when the film was seen by audiences. All that being said, tough to give it a grade.

Gotta be one that won't freak out the parents of the other kids too, right?

Paranorman, Frankenweenie, and maybe The Mummy come to mind.

The original Halloween has one sex scene. If you can get past the 1 minute part I think Halloween is a highly suspenseful, scary movie with no gore. I saw it when I was 10 years of age and it scared the living crap outta me.

I was hooked on horror big time after that.

Or....if you want to keep it light....you can try The Original Frankenstein but that may bore the living crap outta him.

I think Poltergeist would be a great first scary movie. At 9 years old it should freak him out pretty damn good. Yeah there is a pot smoking scene with the parents.....all depends on your beliefs.

I am a kid who was thrown into the fire and not kept in a bubble when it came to movies. I saw Jaws at 5 years of age, The Omen at 6, Alien at 9. I saw Animal House at 8 you get my drift.

I turned out just fine.

My own son? I exposed him early and often like I was. He is perfectly fine. So it all depends on your "house rules"

Shock and Awe? Halloween, Poltergeist, Nightmare on Elm Street

Ease him in? Universal classic monster movies (black and white flicks) like Frankenstein or The Wolfman etc.

Yeah I did not even think of that.

Swim at you own risk.....if the other kids parents are gonna flip.....be really careful what you choose.

Two parents so far have endorsed Poltergeist, but have refused to rewatch it themselves. Which led to the question.

Obviously we'll tell them which movie, but we're going to pick it and let them decide if junior is to chicken to come.

My parents put me in front of The Exorcist at around that age and while it traumatized me for a weekend, it also sparked a lifelong love of the genre.

One made for kids that is live action is Monster Squad.

One not made for kids that has horror elements without really being scary is the original Beetlejuice.

And learn from me. I once played the original Paranormal Activity during the daytime when watching my nephews and nieces. I thought it was safe because it was only rated R due to language, but it really freaked out my 10 year old niece to where she couldn't sleep alone for a week

I like the Poltergeist recommendations. The Lost Boys might be another good choice. The Ring would be another.

I have to disagree with the recommendation of Halloween or anything similar. That's too intense for kids this age and it's likely that at least one parent will have an issue with something like this. Besides, kids will enjoy a movie like this more if they're sneaking it in, as opposed to having it handed to them by their parents.

I also think the old Universal monster movies are just too old for kids, and they move too slowly.

My kid has seen Beetlejuice, and hated it (not because it's scary). He has requested scary, so I'm trying to deliver!

Understandable. I'll be mentioning this momentarily in my 31 for 31 List, but one that is scary but PG-13 and likely appropriate for a 9 year old is Signs. Saw it again this weekend on Max

One made for kids that is live action is Monster Squad.

One not made for kids that has horror elements without really being scary is the original Beetlejuice.

What about something like The Others? Trying to think of pg-13 movies that are actually scary.

1st - Immaculate (Hulu) Grade B
2nd - Wind Chill (Tubi) Grade C
3rd - Oddity (AMC+/Shudder) Grade A+
4th - The Wicker Man (1973) (Freevee) Grade B
5th - I Saw the TV Glow (Max) Grade D+
6th - A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors (AMC) Grade B
7th - Salem's Lot (2024) (Max) Grade B-
8th - The Deliverance (Netflix) Grade D+
9th - Stephen King's Riding the Bullet (Freevee) Grade D.
10th - What You Wish For (Hulu) Grade B+
11th - Apartment 7A (Paramount +) Grade C
12th - Are You Alone in the House (Prime) Grade F
13th - The Sentinel (Prime) Grade C+
14th - Lifeforce (Prime) Grade D
15th - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (AMC+) Grade A
16th - Blackwater Lane (Peacock) Grade C-
17th - The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Prime) Grade B-
18th - Night of the Creeps (Tubi) Grade B+

19th - The Stuff (AMC+) The wife wanted to recapture the cheesy goodness of Night of the Creeps and decided on this campy 1980s horror. Someone discovers this white ooze bubbling in the earth and of course decided to eat it. This leads to the latest craze of mass production and consumption of The Stuff. Some of the supposed scares had me laughing out loud, as did the fact that this actually stars Paul Sorvino and Danny Aiello. If you're looking for 1980s midnight movie fare, you could do worse. Grade C+.

20th - MaXXXine (Max) I really liked X, liked Pearl and lamented that I had missed the third installment at the theater. But this one was lacking. Mia Goth still does well as the titular character, but setting this in 1980s Hollywood wasn't enough to keep the series fresh. More disappointing than outright bad, there just wasn't enough here to warrant a recommendation, as it is the definition of style over substance. Grade C-

21st - Signs (Max) This may be the horror film I've seen the most times, as it is the wife's favorite and she wanted a revisit. Surprisingly, I still learned new details from this latest rewatch. This was the last movie in M. Night Shayamalyn's amazing three-film streak to start his career before his abrupt decline. Couple a director who knows what he's doing with heavyweight actors (peak) Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix and top-notch child actors and you should get a great film. Some may not care for the methodical build, but so much comes together in this one that I have to give it a Grade A+

22nd - Host (2020) (AMC+) Not to be confused with Bong Joon-ho's environmental creature-feature, this is a fusion of Paranormal Activity with COVID-era Zoom parties. The premise didn't strike me as awe-inspiring, but after a somewhat slow build, I really got into it. I had gotten away from found footage films for awhile, so maybe this one came off as fresher to me than it would to others, but I was surprised how much I liked this one. Grade B+

* I also saw Till Death on Netflix, which was decent, but that one was more thriller than horror and since I'm actually ahead of pace, I won't officially squeeze that one onto my list.

I was also thinking some M.Night movies could work too.

The Visit scared me as well.

New to me-

Fright Night(remake) - 8/10, Started out more light hearted than i thought, then got into it. Fun for sure

Hush- 8/10, Really enjoyed how they built tension here, love the lead actress too.

Oddity- 8/10, One of the better jump scares imo, my wife almost fell off the couch.

The Invitation (2015)- 7/10, Slow build of anxiety during a dinner party with a group of old friends.

Significant Other- 7.5/10, a few twists and turns as a young couple go backpacking in the woods. really enjoyed this and didn't expect a few of the twists.

Apartment 7A- 6/10, First semi dud of the month. Julia Garner is great in it, but the story overall is meh.

What You Wish For-7/10 - Nick Stahl really has changed his look. Enjoyed this chefy, rich people dinner flick, but yeah it get depraved.

Deathgasm- 7.5/10, Heavy metal meets demons. Fun old school type of gore-horror/comedy with practical effects. Enjoyed it.

The Nun II- 7/10, Enjoyed it more than the first one and i liked that one too. Enjoyed the characters and The Nun is just creepy imo

The of House of the Devil- 5/10, College girl that needs money takes up a babysitting gig in a creepy house, but nothing really happens until the end. Set in the early 80s, and they captured that well, even filming-wise. Lot's of zooms and long shots, that said, it was pretty meh.

Malignant- (2021) 7.5/10, If movies were races, The House of The Devil is a turtle race and Malignant is an F1 race. Lights out and away we go! The lead is plagued by dreams of people being killed...but they end up actually being dead the next day. I thought it was well done for what it did and how they tied it together.

Session 9, 7.5/10, An asbestos removal team takes a job at old insane asylum. Liked the slow build into everyone potentially losing it and them not trusting each other, really liked the ending.

The Endless, 7.5/10, Two brothers journey to a cult camp that they were at years ago. Thought it was well done and built to a good ending. Mixed in a little sci-fi which is always nice imo

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, 7.5/10, Very fun zom-com... Shawn of the Dead meets Superbad. This will definitely go in the rewatch routine

Mother!, 7/10, Jennifer Lawrence and the dude from no Country for Old Men start having house guest arrive at their house. It's filmed in a different way, lots of following around and camera turns from front to back, if that makes sense. We enjoyed it, but it does pump up the anxiety a bit of just not being in control. My wife texted my this morning saying it gave her nightmares lol

V/H/S 2, 7.5/10, Actually surprised I hadn't seen more of this series as I really enjoyed the first one. Love the shorts tied into the main storyline, will defiantly watch more of the series soon.

Lake Mungo, 6.5/10, Really slow FF flick, some decent "spooky" things going on but the middle of the story is very thin and slow. Worth a watch, just make it through the slog in the middle.

Rewatches-

Evil Dead Rise
Shawn of the Dead
The Thing
It Follows
Van Hellsing
Mama
Hereditary
Terrifier
Midsommer
V/H/S
