Fifteen Days/Songs of Christmas Music Mixtape Draft - Links to final mixes in post #1 (1 Viewer)

Sorry, it was weird. 1 after work drink turned into 2 turned into 3. Anyway, am I drunk or is this song still available. It can't be. Seriously. The rock era began before 63, just ask Brenda Lee as she rocks around her Christmas tree.

Round 8. Brenda Lee. Rockin Around the Christmas Tree. Wild Card.

ETA: I am drunk. Thought we had 3 wild cards.

ETA 2: Who knows, it's probably only my 2nd wild card pick .There is too much going on here to figure this out!

Pol Pot is not "offensive".  Turds on your shoes are offensive, and that song qualified.  With all that supposed talent, they couldn't come up with anything better to sing?  Really?
Geldof and Ure themselves later recognised the musical limitations of "Do They Know It's Christmas?": in his typically blunt manner, Geldof told Australia's Daily Telegraph in 2010, "I am responsible for two of the worst songs in history. The other one is 'We Are the World'."[42]Ure's assessment was more considered, writing in his autobiography that "it is a song that has nothing to do with music. It was all about generating money... The song didn't matter: the song was secondary, almost irrelevant."
Both the writers of the songs agree with you about the quality of the song. It is irrelevant and always has been. The Z cars theme tune was used as a baseline ffs. Using ther term offensive about this song is....well...offensive. Dont listen to it or even like it. I enjoy it as it reminds me that musicians sometimes think about things other than themselves. Geldof hoped to raise £70000, they ultimately ended up raising tens of millions. Thats what you should think of when these ethiopian songs come on.

For my weekend pick, I'll have another Wild Card here

Let's Put the X Back in Christmas by Candye Kane and Country **** Montana

I never had any problem with their intentions.  But singing "Do they know it's Christmas?" to people who are starving or in a war is just assinine, especially since most of them aren't actually Christians.  I don't think most of them gave a crap about the date.

I mentioned when another from this album was taken that it was always the staple in my house when I was a kid. This one works for songs for kids and if I need to I can slide it into the pre 1960 whatever category

8.12 - Here Comes Santa Claus - Gene Autry - Child's Christmas

This one too?

My 4th round pick of O Tannenbaum still needs to move to novelty, please.

And thanks for doing this.  It is making my holiday season much more fun.  And thanks to Simey for smoothing out the procedural stuff.

Wasn't sure if we were making the 9th rounder in sequence or not.

...

To the tune of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" ... I'll take this one as my second Rock Era Original. Love the recurring crescendos, the slice-of-life storyline, and the closing sax solo:

9.09: "Same Auld Lang Syne" - Dan Fogelberg

Rare to see this level of venom from the Eephus.. mind your tact when you're doing your charity, kids!

Good pick Doug, I wish I'd thought of it, something yachty

I like Do They Know It's Christmas?  Always have.   My only criticism and the one I made earlier in the thread is that the list of performers contained very few A-listers.

Well Kool and the Gang were there

If you don't just sing along and imitate everybody until just past about halfway through, then skip, you're doing it wrong

Says the guy who took 14 minutes of Michael Sweet and Chris Cornell

Somebody help me figure out if I am correctly drafting per the requirements:

(2) picks from the following traditional carols:  Away in a Manger, Silent Night, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Jingle Bells
NONE- NEED 2

(2) picks from the following pop standards:  White Christmas, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
NONE- NEED 2

Other songs from the traditional and standards category (excluding the 6 7 mandatory songs)
(1) traditional/religious carols (written before 1900)
Grrensleeves/What Child is this

(1) pop standards (written between 1900 and 1963)
Jingle Bell Rock

(3) Rock-era originals (written in 1964 or later)
Don't Shoot Me Santa
White Wine in the Sun
Scary ####ed Up Christmas

Miscellaneous categories (relatively open to your interpretation except the 6 7 mandatory songs are verboten except for Jzilla's Jingle Bells)

(1) Instrumental - any song, any era
NONE _ NEED ONE

(2) Wild card songs - any song, any era and including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter, December, New Year's etc.
Christmas Blues

(1) Sad/depressing/wistful/anti Christmas song
NONE _ NEED ONE

(1) Child's Christmas - A song by, for or about kids.
Sleigh Ride

(1) Novelty song - JZilla's pick of the Barking Dogs version of "Jingle Bells" is grandfathered in
Blue Christmas / Porky

============================================

So I need the six highlighted in red to complete my total of 16 selections?

This one works for a couple categories, but for now I'm going to put it in my vacant slot for pre-1900:

Round 9.xx:  "The Twelve Days Of Christmas" by John Denver and The Muppets

The Spotify version is the one from John Denver's Christmas LP with the Muppets.  It's a lot of fun and a track I listened to a lot as a kid over the holidays.  I linked to the 1979 TV special which AFAIK only aired once.  The TV version is slightly different, most notably Fozzie missing his line during a few countdowns.

Quick question: "Jingle Bells" was added as a fourth Mandatory Traditional Carol option. Wasn't "Blue Christmas" similarly added to the Mandatory Pop Standard options?

Eephus will have to answer it, but it seemed to me it was discussed as a possible option, but it never made it in as a mandatory option.

There only are 3 mandatory/core pop standards to choose from.

Blue Christmas has already been drafted by Cosjobs as a novelty and by me as a wildcard.

So I can see this:

Mandatory Trad Carol: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Barenaked Ladies

Mandatory Trad Carol:

Mandatory Pop Standard: Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Jackson 5

Mandatory Pop Standard: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - Jack Johnson

Traditional Carol (pre:1900): O Come all Ye Faithful - Weezer

Pop Standard (1900-1963):

Rock Era Original ('63-present): Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End) - The Darkness

Rock Era Original ('63-present): Carry Me Home - Hey Rosetta

Rock Era Original ('63-present): A Great Big Sled - The Killers

Instrumental:

Wild Card: A Doe to a Deer - Los Campesinos

Wild Card:

Sad/Depressing: It's Christmas So We'll Stop - Frightened Rabbit

Child's Christmas: Here Comes Santa Claus - Gene Autry

Novelty Song: O Holy Night - Eric Cartman

Has anyone attempted a spotify playlist of all picks? I know a lot aren't there but I have some time this afternoon and can see what is on there?

OK ... time to close out Rock Era Originals. I missed out on "Christmas in Hollis" ... but I can still take that classic riff:

10.05: "Back Door Santa" - Clarence Carter

.
Does this break the deadlock on inappropriately sexualized Christmas songs?  I enjoyed looking at the Wikipedia entry on this (I was looking for the composition date).

The lyrics are sexually suggestive, not having much to do with Christmas as a holiday.

10.x - 1lov80s - OTC  timed out

10.x - cos

10.x - Bruce

10.x - Kumerica - skip

10.x - NV

10.x - simey

10.04  -  A Pretty Good Christmas - The Disappointment Choir  -  Rock Era

It only has <1,000 plays on Spotify and about 2,000 total views from two different YouTube videos but this is one of my favorite Christmas songs of recent years.  It captures the hope against hope that comes with spending the holiday with ones you love in spite of everything that's happening in the world outside.  The extended coda brings a lump to my throat.
