Devo - while I am a big fan of "Duty Now For The Future" my go-to for Devo is "Are We Not Men."El Floppo said:Re Devo... duty now for the future is an all-timer, top to bottom. Still had lots of guitar/punk sound going with the spudboy geeky synths and vocals. I loooooove that album, and hard. Later albums have a song or three on them, but I generally can't listen to the whole things.
Spotify daily mixes... Wife and kids use my account, so there are a couple mixes dedicated to Kidz bop pop stuff and U2 Pearl jam etc. The last couple drafts messed up my usual postpunk melange, so I've got more older Rock in there now, along with some early 70s soul/funk.
And re gin... Like Marco, Hendricks and boodles. We've been drinking Tito's vodka lately.
Haven't had a chance to listen to mixes this weekend. Left off partway through Marco's on Friday and it was all kinds of amazing so far.

Also great. I just feel like Duty pushed it all ahead in a way that still resonates for me. Block head still one of my favorite songs.Devo - while I am a big fan of "Duty Now For The Future" my go-to for Devo is "Are We Not Men."

You are not. I thought Simey was a bit forward there.I can't be the only one that read that as "what time is it in your pants?"What time is it right now in your parts?
The correct answer is "party time" in either case. You are not. I thought Simey was a bit forward there.I can't be the only one that read that as "what time is it in your pants?"What time is it right now in your parts?
So not "Howdy Doody Time"?The correct answer is "party time" in either case. You are not. I thought Simey was a bit forward there.I can't be the only one that read that as "what time is it in your pants?"What time is it right now in your parts?
Sure, yeah, I guess. So not "Howdy Doody Time"?The correct answer is "party time" in either case. You are not. I thought Simey was a bit forward there.I can't be the only one that read that as "what time is it in your pants?"What time is it right now in your parts?
What makes a song qualify for a subject-say for example biology?I was thinking more about the school draft, and I was leaning towards the drafters doing the whole mix for one category/subject. Mostly for selfish reasons, and ease of the draft:
1. We don't have to keep track of how many of each subject have been taken.
2. IMO it's easier to focus on one thing for the category drafts.
3. We don't have to debate and decide on the subjects everybody will have to draft.
NOW the one thing that concerned me about the draft is spreading out categories. I want people to do what they want so they can find songs they like, but I also want to make sure there is a bit of variety. If we have 20 drafters doing songs about Astronomy that would get old and there would be pretty slim pickins on songs after a bit. I was thinking capping each subject with 2 drafters? 3? That would be 40+ songs for each, and I am sure there is possible overlaps. Should we do first come first served? Assign subjects?
Stuff that I wrote down off the top of my head:
Art, Phy Ed, Health, Astronomy, Math, Physics, Anatomy, Sex Ed, History, Poli Sci, Biology, Zoology, Theology, Literature, Musci, Social Studies, Geography, Foreign Language, Psychology, there are damn near endless possibilities and I think a lot of these would have fun results and mixes.
So you are more in favor of drafting multiple categories? Maybe we need a vote?I'd say limit it to 3-4 of the same subject per drafter. I was thinking of either doing a listing of classes in either trimesters (6 subjects for each) or quarters (5 subjects each).
Would also be be fun to have the ability to draft some teacher songs and maybe even a school song (for all the generic songs about school).
Yeah, I'm just trying to figure out how to get to 20 songs without repeating some subjects - especially if they are broad like Math or History for example. So you are more in favor of drafting multiple categories? Maybe we need a vote?
Again, a main hesitation on this idea is having to keep track of how many subjects each person has taken.
I can keep track of this sort of stuff.Yeah, I'm just trying to figure out how to get to 20 songs without repeating some subjects - especially if they are broad like Math or History for example. So you are more in favor of drafting multiple categories? Maybe we need a vote?

I would say we focus on songs, but after that, it's up to the drafter's interpretation. You have the right idea - either something in the song title fits the category, lyrics do, or both. IMO the more open we are, the better the mixes turn out. Make it too restrictive and people have to draft stuff just to draft it.What makes a song qualify for a subject-say for example biology?
song title- eyes without a face
artist- finger 11
a line of the song- don't know much about history dont know much biology
not sure I get the concept here
I really tried to work this one in. I couldn't get the song out of my head but it just didn't fit the rest of the mix.I have to say, it's kind of suprising, everyone's favourite song from my mix is "You Don't Get Me High Anymore". Maybe we need a pop draft?
I think there are some super easy categories with tons of songs:It sounds like an interesting idea, but I'm having a hard time coming up with songs in academic categories.
I dunno, I'm still waiting on Spotify Premium here, otherwise I would have knocked Bonzai's mix off.
Oh, okay. I was getting a little tightly wound, I guess. I was thinking total thematics rather than tangential relations.I think there are some super easy categories with tons of songs:
Religion - anything with God, Devil, Heaven, Jesus, on and on.
Geography - like I posted above, anything that mentions a City, State, Country or just generic river/mountain, etc..
Zoology - any mention of animals
Math - you could just take songs with numbers
Astronomy - anything with Sun, Earth, planets, stars, comets, Universe in the song or title.
Nah. The music drafts are just about the mixes and the fun of it. No need to force people to get too restrictive with it. To me these categories and different drafts are more about getting us a little outside our usual stuff and getting us researching songs and bands we haven't dipped into for a bit to get something for the draft. Ultimately it's still about us getting good mixes together.Oh, okay. I was getting a little tightly wound, I guess. I was thinking total thematics rather than tangential relations.
I was thinking of organizing my list something like this:
School song (like your fight song): some misc "school" song
Quarter/Trimester/Semester 1 (maybe with some kind of theme)
Subject 1 (ie Math) - song
Subject 2 (Science) - song
Subject 3 (History) - song
Subject 4 (Spanish) - song
Subect 5 (PE) - song
Misc - a place to put more generic teacher/school related songs
Repeat for other quarters/semesters. You don't have to use all the same subjects, but you could have a different Math song for each semester if you wanted.
That's just how I was thinking of organizing my list (if rules allowed). I'd be fine letting drafters do whatever they want, although someone drafting 20 Astronomy related songs might make for some scarcity issues.
I'll do whatever the group wants to do though.
Yeah, I'm all for letting people do what they want with these drafts.![]()
This is exactly the creativity I had in mind. If we don't think there will be much crossover and scarcity, I am fine with having a free or all and have people just do some sort of school/class theme. I am personally more wanting to go the other route and do a mix with 20 different physics terms or something. Again, the main risk is what you said - we somehow get people needing to draft 100 History songs overall and then we run into scarcity and stuff people don't really want to take .
I love that whole album.Eephus said:I really tried to work this one in. I couldn't get the song out of my head but it just didn't fit the rest of the mix.
I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)
Video has chicks behind bars if that's an enticement
Thanks Marco! I enjoyed yours too.. on the plane until I fell asleep, so I need to listen to it again. MoB and Feelies songs made me happy though. The Dreaded Marco said:OK. @JZilla's mix threw me for a loop. There was a lot of stuff that I expect from a Zilla mix and then there was the other stuff---and it worked for the most part.
I hadn't heard that Judas Priest song for many years and it brought back good memories from Jr. High (if that's possible). I had no idea it was a Fleetwood Mac cover until you mentioned that fact during the draft. Loved the Beasties, Mudhoney, SFA, BJM, Waylon, Beatles and Prince.
Of those I was not familiar with, I really liked the Hawkwind and especially the Steve Harley.
Then there were the Lightfoot and Sparks---songs I wouldn't have guessed you'd draft. Loved the former, not the latter as much. And I'm still not sure what to make of that Floyd song. I don't think I've heard it before or anything from Ummagumma. I think I actually love it. I need to give that album a spin.
Overall I really enjoyed your mix. Thanks!

Eephus said:I watched enough basketball to make my eyes bouncebut managed to fit a few mixes in. I was either riding my bike or cooking while I listened so my notes aren't good.
rockaction: I liked the Thursday and Refused songs and thought some of the sound effects and spoken word clips to transition between songs worked well. But I don't think the I Have A Dream speech could have wallpapered the gap between Kids Bop and Four Tet.
I liked the Sparks tune.I really thought that Sparks tune would get me points with the nerd set.. appears to be decidedly the least popular tune on the mix. I only know it because Mike Patton did a version of it with them.. maybe I should have taken that one
Definitely a lot of chill stuff on there.. was pretty helpful actually on a late Sunday night coming back across the country from Vegas![]()

Mine is probably not a Friday night drinking mix.
It's still a mixtape to me dammit. That's awesome. Thanks for listening to it.
In all seriousness, I think people were making too much with the segues. I drafted and went in order. Any real transitions were not necessarily accidental, but really just a bonus. I more made a DI mix out of 6+ word titles. T. Swift wouldn't have been so prominent if Spotify had had other bands I wanted to take. I personally wanted NOFX at the end, but they don't have them. It seems, like Zilla's Sparks (which I liked) that the T. Swift song was the hang-up in the mix. Perhaps I got too cute, and too cool.
I was going to pick that song. Hell Toupee took it in a draft a while back. I hear you on the volume and even run time. Mine clocked in at under C90. Was worried about that, actually. It's still a mixtape to me dammit.
It used to be a science to equalize song volume, avoid having too much dead space between tracks and not run out of tape at the end.
C30, C60, C90 Go
Glad you enjoyed it. Doesn't sound like there was much new for you but we definitely seem to share some musical tastes.Hell yes @sn0mm1s! I love your mix. Many of my favorite bands are here---Smiths/Morrissey, Cracker, DM, T4F's, U2, Femmes and Pixies. The isolated hip hop and Broadway musical tunes stood out a bit in the mix but other than that, the flow was great.
Personal favorites: There is a LIght, End of the World, Bird Dream, and A Pain That I'm Used To.
