MixTape Draft - 6+ word titles. Finish your draft and listen to mixes! (1 Viewer)

It's still a mixtape to me dammit.

It used to be a science to equalize song volume, avoid having too much dead space between tracks and not run out of tape at the end.

C30, C60, C90 Go
Yes - kids today have no idea. You had to time all your songs first - which took forever until CDs came out (unless the tape jacket listed the time). Then figure out which songs had to be cut or shuffled in/out based on length to maximize the amount of music. Then the arduous process of queuing up all the songs. I used to know how fast my tape deck fastforwarded/rewound. Some tape brands gave you a little more time at the end so you *might* be able to squeeze in an extra song. You are absolutely right that making a good sounding tape that didn't waste space was a science and a significant undertaking.

Wasn't able to do much listening over the weekend but I did finish @Ilov80s. If I hazard to guess, aside from the first song in the mix "Cute Without the 'E'" (which was my favorite and immediately added to my iTunes library), this mix is probably going to be the mellowest of the bunch. I am assuming the focus on songs featuring piano and horns was intentional. It made the mix flow well and was enjoyable to listen to. Up next @The Dreaded Marco

What makes a song qualify for a subject-say for example biology?

song title- eyes without a face

artist- finger 11

a line of the song- don't know much about history  dont know much biology

not sure I get the concept here

This is exactly the creativity I had in mind.  If we don't think there will be much crossover and scarcity, I am fine with having a free or all and have people just do some sort of school/class theme.  I am personally more wanting to go the other route and do a mix with 20 different physics terms or something.  Again, the main risk is what you said - we somehow get people needing to draft 100 History songs overall and then we run into scarcity and stuff people don't really want to take .
Cool.  That would let me do a curriculum of only Anthropology songs.

@Bonzai's Mix
Long names

Going In…
Songs Familiar With From Name Alone = 2
Artists I Recognize From Name Alone = 14
Lots of bands where I’ve seen the name, but not overly familiar with the catalog.  Only knowing two songs going in, this is definitely a deep discovery mix for me.

Thoughts While Listening…
Chocolate Watchband’s song is VERY Rolling Stones-ish.  Liked it, only complaint was no ramp up to open on that song.  The Third Bardo has a familiar sound, but my musical acumen is not deep enough to identify the comparison. Again, another solid like.  Given how this song starts vs. the opener, I’d flip them if it was my mix.
Would have never guessed that Foxygen is a band of recent vintage.  Another comparison to Rolling Stones at times.  They are in my area this weekend - should check them out.  Not a huge fan of the outro to that song.
Didn't care for the song by the Minutemen - sent me off to check e-mail.
GBV was a band I’ve seen mentioned on this board a lot - never listened, but wish this particular track had been longer.
Don't think I’ve heard this Kinks song before.  Started off sounding like “Dominic the Donkey” song.  Fits the era the cover depicts.  Again, same for this Beatles tune, except for the Dominic part.  And surprisingly, another song I’ve never heard before (note to readers:  this nearing late 40’s reviewer is not a Beatles fan - more of a Zeppelin/Stones/Who guy) probably because I don't think I’ve ever listened to “Sgt. Peppers” in it's entirety.  Need to correct that.
The Beach Boys are another band I’ve never gotten into outside of the singles, so another completely new song to me.  Solid tune.
Probably not a surprise, this song by Them is a new one for me.  Another Stones-ish song to my ears.  Like this one too.
The Animals, I know this one!  I almost picked this one.  Kind of my theme song for the work week,
This Rodriguez song seems like we know where INXS got their idea for that song on Kick.  Or Conor Oberst for his catalog.  Or maybe Conor followed this Dylan tune.  These two tracks play nice together.  Wow, this Dylan tune is 7 minutes long.
The revolution does appear at the right place on this draft mix.  This mix will not be televised.  Had to Google to see when this was recorded.
Speaking of Conor Oberst, here he is.  Forgot about this tune when I listened to them for a short while after seeing them open for Bruce.  OK, I’ll take back part of my Conor comment earlier - not all of his songs are in that style.  Digging this to start, but now remember thinking this song was too long.  Still think that.
Realize I have missed seeing Against Me! too many times. Liking this tune, so I’ve got to correct that.  Extra pints for the album cover.
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion was a nice find.  Good combo with the AM tune.
The Dandy Warhols sounds good as well.  Like that tune.
This Pavement song is a weird mix - kind of Americana-ish, kind of trying to be old school country with the pedal steel, kind of Bright Eyes-ish.  Kind of works, kind of doesn't.
Billy Bragg song I listened to a few times, but still didn't quite appreciate it as much as I thought I would.
This Neil Young tune is one of the two I don't mind (other being “Rockin’ In the Free World”) hearing on the radio.  Nice way to close out the set.

Coming Out...
Songs I Recognized After Listening = 3 (add in the Bright Eyes tune)

Surprises and Other Thoughts...
Surprised how many of these songs seemed to fit along the Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes pathway - could have easily commented on another two or three with similar comments.  The Gil Scott Heron tune was great in the middle of the mix.
Wish I had drafted the John Spencer Blues Explosion song...Glad I didn't draft the Minutemen tune

Summary…
Lots of new stuff for me, most of which I liked.  May have used another classic track in there, but that's just being Adam Duritz-esque about things at that point.
3.5 out of 5 Duritzes

Liner notes…
Familiar Songs at start were We Gotta Get Out Of This Place (was on my scratchpad) and Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)
Realized I knew the songs after listening added Let's Not Crap Ourselves (To Love and To Be Loved)
Artists I Didn't Recognize Were The Chocolate Watchband, The Third Bardo, Foxygen, Minutemen, Gil Scott-Heron, and Billy Bragg

waingro's mix is pretty chill too.

I gave a 2nd, sober, listen to @KarmaPolice's mix this afternoon.  Sounded just as good with no gin on board--although it is a great Saturday night, drinking mix.

I am a fan of most the artists on this mix and thus loved it.  Of the bands I was less familiar with, the Dead Milkmen and Black Flag songs stood out. The Kinks' song is one of my favorites of all time and your selections from Sleater-Kinney, Sonic Youth and Neil Young were inspired.  Love those 3.

There wasn't a weak link in this mix for me. I do not listen to a lot of R&B so although I've heard the three-fer in the middle of the mix before, they were also relatively new to me---all good.

Nice job!
@The Dreaded Marco

Thanks for giving it a sober listen too.  ;) Really glad you and others are enjoying the mix.  I am planning on more write ups today and will get to yours.

Listening to @El Floppo playlist right now. It's a compilation of the type of songs that are not currently in my wheelhouse but I really Like Like Like Like Like Like Like it so far. Will do a write up once completed.
^^ this song was stuck in my head all day yesterday. It's a really catchy, fun and upbeat tune as was much of @El Floppo 's playlist.

One of the main reasons why I wanted to participate in these drafts was to broaden the range of music that I am currently listening to. This playlist accomplished that really well. The opening song by LCD Soundsystem set the tone nicely for this mix and I felt that the rest of the songs maintained this fun rhythm and theme.

The song by Funkadelic might be my favorite tune from this list and I thought that it actually fit into the mix really well. Love when the drums kick in and how the rest of the song comes along with this strong beat. They claim to be a funk band but I love the elements of rock/punk that they introduce into this song. Going to have to dive deeper into their albums.

So Cow / The Intelligence / Japanther - this grouping created a ton of energy packed into less than 10 minutes. Really loved the bass line in the middle of the So Cow song.

Overall, this was an excellent mix of unknowns (for me) with very little desire to skip to the next song. I look forward to moar!

I am really behind on reviews, I need to catch up - @Waingro

Maybe it's just that I like damn near all the mixes in these drafts when we do them, but I feel like some of these mixes are perfectly fitting into what I am doing and this mix just really hit the spot on a rainy ####ty Saturday afternoon.  Really was chill and lifted the mood while the kids and I played.  I do realize I don't pay close attention to who is drafting what - but did we draft damn near the whole Jim Croce's GHs?  Not a complaint - I am liking the songs, it just seems like every mix but mine has a song on it.  I was surprised I new the first Croce song on the mix and loved it.  Few others I knew and liked as well, but there was a lot of new stuff on her.  It also got quite dusty when that Mamas & Papas song hit and I thought of your familly singing that to lil' Bean Cake.  Just beautiful.

1.  Bobby Caldwell -

Loved the opener for the mix. Really set the mood for the rest of the mix.  I will admit it took a little bit to get to the rest of the mix b/c I listened to this one a few times in a row before moving on.

2.  Stevie Wonder -

See my past reviews - I really need to start listening to more Mr. Wonder.  Most is new to me and most I have really liked.

3.  Santana -

Just a fantastic song.  That Santana guy can play the guitar pretty OK and stuff.

Great mix waingro, and it really hit the spot.  It was hard to pick between the Santana song and the one right after it.  Really loved that flow into the back 1/2 of the mix!.

@Raging weasel was 2nd over the weekend

After the mostly new to me mix from waingro, we hit RW's epic 2 hour mix.  A lot of this one was familiar and there were quite a few things on this mix that I had written down at the start of the mix.  The Day I Tried to Live is one of my favorite songs ever, if I didn't do short songs, Metallica was going to be my first rounder.  Huge bonus points for Maiden (I drafted that album in the last draft) and for taking a Beatles song I don't want to skip.  ;)    Really loved that PJ Harvey song getting drafted and realized I haven't listened to that album in forever.  A few new ones for me:

1.  SRV -

Yet another artist/band to add to my huge list of people I need to listen to more.  Just fantastic song.  Have never really dug much past a few of his hits, and need to change that.

2.  Pat Benatar -

Like above, somebody that I don't know much past a couple hits.

3.  The Black Angels -

Had never even heard of the band before this started, so this was a great find for me.  Will start digging into some albums after this is over - do you suggest starting with the album this song was from, or is there a better album to start with?

Again, great mix!  The only miss for me was the 2nd tune.  Not huge Beatles fan or Elton John fan, so that was a double whammy, but the rest of the songs more than made up for it.  Good start for your rookie FFA music draft....

thanks KP!  Passover by the Black Angels is the place to start. Their 2nd disc is okay and havent really listened to anything after those.

Really appreciate the review, KP. Connecting musically, and becoming aware of how some of these songs and playlists can incite emotion, is very touching and quite interesting as well.

We will miss and dream of our little Beancake. He brought many communities together (families, hospital staff, iFriends, etc) and we all came together really strongly this past week to provide love and support to the parents and each other. Very touching.

Regarding Croce/Stevie/Carlos - they're amazing. I continue to stumble upon new content that become repeats for me.

@Dr. Octopus  was the 1st mix of the day. 6 of the first 7 (sorry jayhawks) were songs I hadnt heard in ages.

Liked the cake song-never heard it before. didn't care much for the lone bellows, jesse rueben or yoakam.

dylan and springsteen are hit and miss for me and these both were misses. A pretty enjoyable mix except for the end if I wasnt on shuffle play

next was @PIK95. the beatles, led zep and floyd--yes please.

never been a dead fan but liked morning dew-the other one not so much. until this draft never heard lcd soundsystem- thought NY i love you was good but didn't like the 2nd song much.

Liked the Melanie song, she has a great voice. only knoe REM from their big hits but really liked this track.

overall I liked this mix tho it's a little jarring on shuffle

@El Floppo was next. I was kind of scared to hit play as I didn't recognize hardly any of the bands or songs. Surprisingly I didn't mind most of it and overall would say i liked it.

didn't like of montreal, boogie down, death grips or a place to bury strangers but the rest was listenable if not enjoyable.

it s not my type of music but I liked it so Id say you did a great job!

I wasn't sure what the silence meant.  But it seems like people are thinking about it, so I can start a thread tonight or tomorrow with the intent to start drafting next week.  I think I just have 2 mixes left to listen to from this draft, but unfortunately my reviews have been pushed aside as I am looking for stuff for the next one.  I have enjoyed every mix, gotten a bunch of new music loaded up, and thanks again to everybody for putting them together.

Yes, I have narrowed down the rules (or lack thereof).  It will very flexible.  Is @Mr. Ected open for doing another spreadsheet?

I haven't decided if I will be participating; but I will be able to assist in doing the spreadsheet.

I plan to listen to and comment on each of the mixes---it's just going to take me awhile.

As for the next draft, it sounds interesting and I'd like to participate but I'm going on a college visiting tour with my daughter from 3/31-4/9. Might be tough to keep up but I'm willing to give it a try.  If KP can get the rules out soon I can put together some pre-draft rankings!

Wow that's quite a visit. Which college?

I will get through every mix with my "stream of consciousness" review, but prepping for a baseball draft this Saturday + working on taxes on Sunday means I won't get to another review until next week.  Unfortunately, work has been kicking me in the teeth as well, so no listening there either.

Count me in for another draft...but darn you @KarmaPolice for this one as whenever I now see a song title, my first question is "6+ words or less?"

@The Dreaded Marco

I will start a thread later, but here is what I was thinking:

"Back to School" mixtape draft:

1. It will be a free for all, just stick to the idea of school/classes, (hell, I guess partying and playing videos games too).  So you can:

  - make a mix with songs make a general reference to school, teachers, classes, etc..

  - make a mix that "teaches" a single class/subject - ie all songs about Astronomy

  - make a mix that has a song or two from a bunch of different subjects/classes

  - make a mix of all school fight songs or songs from Homecoming dances

  - make a mix of a combo of the above.

2.  We are focusing on song titles/lyrics, not artists.  ie you can't use a Beatles song for your Zoology class (unless it's a song about an animal)

3.  I am not going to strictly enforce it, but I think we should try to keep these at 90mins or less.  These mixtape drafts started with the idea of putting them on different lengths of real cassette tapes, but we have gotten away from that a bit.

4.  I was thinking 20 songs like this last draft

5.  It doesn't matter what you use for the school reference - word in the title, lyrics, both.

I will get through every mix with my "stream of consciousness" review, but prepping for a baseball draft this Saturday + working on taxes on Sunday means I won't get to another review until next week.  Unfortunately, work has been kicking me in the teeth as well, so no listening there either.

Is that at The Bitter End? Which would be pretty sweet since many iconic musicians have stepped onto that stage.

How does Floppinho practice at home? A kit, practice pads or the standard pots and pans?

Yeah, the iconic Bitter End. They do their midseason show there and final show at other established east village/LES clubs like Drom, Rockwood, Bowery Electric, etc.

We just send him into the subway to practice with whatever he can find.

He's got an electric kit. He's 9- still barely leaves our side, let alone hanging out in the subway by himself. We do send our 5yo out to score us weed.

Eta... And thanks for the kind words- I think he's great, but mostly he just loves performing. Most of the kids in the program are solid musicians but seem like playing live is torture for them

JuddZilla's was the first mix I listened to. I didn't mention it earlier, because I didn't finish it cause it has 40 songs on it. He was all over the place with genres. I liked it including the 1st song by Judas Priest.

@Steve Tasker

this one came out on fire for me- a bunch of songs I had pulled out as well and soooo consistent with a great groove and flow. those first five tunes were just perfect- didn't really know that particular surfjn tune but got sniped (maybe) on tame impala and okkervil.

I've somehow missed fall out boy. happily (based on that one tune). doubt I'll be looking any further, but it fit great with the playlist.the rocking indie (for steve) segued nicely into his usual more synth-poppy indie and kept the flow amazingly until those two hip-hop tunes (both great).

but whoa, the wheels fell off for me with billy- even though it oddly fit well with the non-hip-hop part of the mix- and went off the cliff with the last three songs. all artist I like, but, songs I don't. but still- like the billy tune- they did like a consistent flow with what was going on earlier... just don't care for the tunes at all.

@PIK95

started off with a bang- really liked the less obvious gin blossoms tune starting off the classic rock run of beatles, floyd and zep. even the white stripes tune sounded like the who to me so fit right in... felt like a blockboster start.

that melanie tune lost me, but even though I'm not a fan of the boss, I really enjoyed the bruce/lcd back to back and felt like they segued nicely into the bottomless pit o' dead. I'm not a dead fan at all, so I had to skip on through- but I liked the lead in.

the dead started the mix turning choppy to the finish- indie-rock, pop-wave 80s, edm and then that m&ps tune to close. fun, but not so flowish- the daftppunk tune in particular felt a bit of an outsider, even though it paired decently with lcd's more techno live tune.

Dr. Octopus Learns To Count

Going In…

Songs Familiar With From Title Alone = 7

Artists I Recognize From Name Alone = 19

Recognizing a number of artists as ones I know of, but don’t really know their catalog, I think this one this will be more of song discovery vs. artist discovery.

Thoughts While Listening…

Always liked this song by The Police and yes, I am old enough to know what a VCR is

Jim Croce is an artist that typically does not get caught up in my radar for some reason.  What a great song - never realized this was it’s name.  Same with The Birds.

Friends keep on referring The Jayhawks to me - may need to finally check them out as I like this one.  Little Dylan crossing R.E.M. to my ears on this song.

I know this is not a Clapton song, but he is my new Petty.  Let me explain:  for the longest time, I could only take Petty in small doses - finally saw him live and broke that.  Clapton, even though I have seen him live, I now have the same small does problem.  This song has great guitar - maybe I need to get away from the Clapton/Derek & Dominos singles and listen to full albums.

Lenny!  Love this tune!  Gonna go my way and air guitar like a madman for a second.  Annndd, let’s stick with the air guitar during Van Halen, with a few karate jumps thrown in for good measure.

Good, a slow one as I may have pulled something on that last karate jump.  Nice classic song here, not sure I’ve ever heard this one but Dusty is rarely a big listen for me.

Seen The Lone Bellow in concert as an arena opener, but I don’t recall the songs they played and they did not pull me onto that train yet.  Decent song though - would be better seeing them in small room vs. opening for Eric Church like I did.

My buddy is a big Ben Folds fan - finally checking him out here.  Seems like a mix of Joe Jackson and Jason Mraz at first listen.  I can see the appeal with the lyrics and playing.

Another missed opportunity - never saw The White Stripes.  Outside of 7NA, their catalog is a black hole for me.  Now, I know Jack White is a great artist, but not sure this one is driving me to explore more.  Kind of Janis Joplin-esque though in the chorus.

Back into that sweet spot of recognizable tunes with Stevie, Paul and JT not Timberlake here.  Not much I can say about these classic songs that has not been said previously - they play well on the mix here together, but the Cake in the middle threw me.

Jesse Ruben - now this guy sounds very Mraz-ish.

Never had been into the old school country, but I know Dwight Yoakam is one of the greats.  But really digging this tune!

My wife loves my Bob Dylan impression - it’s similar to this tune, but imagine trying to do the Charlie Brown “wah-wah, wah, wah-wah-wah” with marbles in your mouth.  That’s my impression.  She’ll laugh when I play this one for her later today.

This Beatles track must be a Ringo sung one.  Meh.

Bruce!  Seen this song live and it’s a pretty good, fun deeper cut track.

Coming Out...

Songs I Recognized After Listening = 9 (add Jim Croce and The Birds songs)

Surprises and Other Thoughts...

Surprised that I enjoyed the Dwight Yoakam track and realized that Cake

Wish I had drafted the Lenny Kravitz song...Glad I didn't draft the Beatles tune

Summary…

Definitely had some artist discovery for me here, realizing some tracks I liked by lesser listened artists (for me) that I recognized.  A nice start to some listening today with a good mix of mellow and a sprinkle of classic tunes.

Next Up:  @Eephus
Paul sings on "why don't we do it in the road".

Aright, I listened to @Steve Tasker's mix with some pints tonight. Obviously he and I have very overlapping tastes in music, so that somewhat limited what new stuff I was going to grab from this. That said, he includes my very favourite song by both Michael Jackson (The Way You Make Me Feel) and Whitney Houston (I Wanna Dance With Somebody), which given their catalogues is no small feat. Dumb FBG filter thinks I spelled words wrong there but it's all because of "U"...

He sniped PUP (If this tour doesn't kill you) and Courtney Barnett   (Nobody Really Cares if You Go to the Party) and semi sniped on the Tame Impala and War on Drugs songs, which given my narrow 2015-forward focus for my own mix, means #### him.

"Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe" by Okkervil river is a song/album/band I should listen to more. The Geto Boys tune rules as well. The Tribe Called Quest songs reminds me that Sugar Ray Exists and "Fly" is a better song than this one :oldunsure:

All that aside, "I Won't Fall Apart on You Tonight" by Eleanor Friedberger, "Hollywood, We Did It All Wrong" by Bleached and "No One Wants it to Happen To You" by Small Black are my top 3 new to me songs. I didn't think this is what small Black sounded like - definitetly should dig deeper there  and the other two as well. Also, this mix just reaffirms my love for the cheesy/crappy? Rihanna/Calvin Harris song.

Obviously beyond all this, the Los Campesinos song is the second best song on the whole mix and only because that Courtney Barnett song is sooooo good.

And oh my god, I almost didn't mention Fall Out Boy. The Fall Out Boy song is amazing. And I'm a poser who jumed on the FOB bandwagon with From Under the Cork Tree (and then went back) but I don't give the early albums enough credit, I go hard for pop-punk Fall Out Boy. They released a new song today. It's dubstep or something, it's turrible.
