Burger 21 has really good burgers.  Of course, you pay for quality, so if you're one of the "I had to take out a second mortgage to afford that $15 meal" crowd, best to stick to the value menu at Mickey D's.  Also, they're 1/3 pound burgers, so if you're a big eater or expect a 1/2 pound burger for your $8 (give or take), you may be disappointed.  Burgers are really solid, they use only Angus beef and make all burgers fresh daily.  They have some interesting pre-fab combinations of toppings you don't find elsewhere too (i.e. the Loaded Spud - chopped applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, scallion cream, potato crisp, Certified Angus Beef® burger, brioche bun, Cheese & Ale Sauce or the Gruyere - asparagus, applewood smoked bacon, Gruyère cheese, honey Dijon sauce, over- easy egg, Certified Angus Beef® burger, lettuce, tomato, brioche bun.)

 
We have an in-n-out and 5 guys equidistant from us. 

burger vs burger= prefer in-n-out

fries= do not love 5 guys.too large cut and over-seasoned.   for in-n-out: they are fine when i dine in. if i get them to go, need to order them extra crispy (or well done)

You chose well - Culver's fries suck.  They're like elementary school cafeteria fries.

Tried 5 Guys for the first time last week.  I've seen them around in my travels, but eating fast food on business trips with clients and/or on the company dime is generally frowned upon, so I've never been.  They recently added a location in the local mall and took the kids after a movie 'cause they raved about it and wanted to go.

It was probably the best fast food experience I've had.  I enjoyed the free peanuts and an iced tea while waiting for my order.  I ordered a double cheeseburger w/out the bun in bowl and it was delicious.  I tried a couple of fries and they were excellent; made from fresh potatoes, just like I make at home.

Here's my fast food burger ranking:

1)  5 Guys Burgers & Fries
2)  In n' Out
3)  Wendy's
4)  Jack-In-The-Box
5) McDonald's/Burger King/Everybody else

Yep - I know it's been said but the only thing is 5 guys doesn't have going for it is the price - it now costs as much as burgers at most sit down places.

to clarify - the burger and fries combines are as much

Zin Ive been to was an awesome burger, better than any fast food type, but it was more of a full sit down restaurant with decent enough bar, at that.

Sounds like my location.

I still prefer a Carl's Jr. Famous Star over all of the rest.

 
i'll add that i like the topping options at 5 guys. 

also- has there been a consensus on whether or not 5 guys is in the same category as in-n-out?  seems like it is in between other sit down places (where the burgers are a lot better) and fast food (where i am not sure 5 guys beats other places outright).

 
Freaking hate that I only get In N Out every couple years. Stuck wit 5 Guys that cost twice as much.

While eating Smashburger today, my wife said, “This is what 5 Guys burgers should be.  They’re just too mushy.”

I guess I agree, thiugh I also like 5G.

Smashburger uses small patties, 5Guys uses big patties. I don't understand preferring Smashburger to 5Guys unless you're on a budget.

I've never been screamed at in any burger joint.  :D

But the local El Pollo Loco hangs a bell over it's door and customers ring that damn thing every 3 minutes, and the staff yells "THANK YOU!" It's annoying as hell and I really feel for the employees.

 
Discovered this gem of a place recently down here is South Florida. It's called Tucker Dukes.

My favorite so far is the Marmaduke . Simply amazing. You need to come very hungry as the burgers are huge.

Smashburger toasts their buns, which helps keep them from absorbing so much grease and turning into a soggy ball of burger goodness.  It's different, and I like it slightly more.

Sorry, have both near me and Smashburger isn’t as good, especially their fries. My kids never tell me they want to go there, much rather go to five guys. Not saying it’s bad but Not as good.

Okay, I guess I'm wrong, I must like 5 Guys more.

 
So, Texas options I didn't have back east:

Whataburger - Blah. It's hyped at sorta near In n Out levels here, but just really basic imo.  Whatevs.  Not bad, but what. evs. 

Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers - The place basically does chicken fingers.  They have some "special sauce" - think Russian (OOOH! fancy!).   Not BBQ.  Not Country Gravy.  Not Buffalo.  

Just this one freakin' weak ### flavored mayo.  

WTF? Is it that hard to order a bunch of BBQs and Buffalos? The strips were tasty enough, but boring as #### without some good dippins.  Won't likely be going there again.
