Foo Fighters are the greatest rock and roll band of all time (2 Viewers)

I think the early stuff is good, but the rest is rather generic to me. Nirvana stuff is way better.

Free live Super Saturday Night concert in Atlanta right now on Audience channel on DirecTV, and also streaming live on @DirecTV and @Foofighters on Twitter.

They started about 11:20pm so theyre only 3 songs in at the moment.

To me this feels like Bonham/Zeppelin situation. I think Dave was so close to Taylor it'll be just too much for him to go on without him.

I agree. We may have seen the last of the Foo Fighters as a band, and I completely get it. It sucks, and I'm sure Dave and the rest of the guys will still make music, either solo or in other projects, but I just don't know if they ever record and tour as the Foos again.

God dammit this sucks.

Dave Grohl is the heart of Foo Fighters, but Taylor Hawkins was its rock star.

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2022-03-26/taylor-hawkins-dave-grohl-foo-fighters-rock-star

Taylor Hawkins may have been the only drummer alive who could have supported Dave Grohl in Foo Fighters and not make you wish Grohl was sitting behind the kit.

Hawkins — who died on Friday while on tour in South America, at age 50 — didn’t merely equal Grohl in terms of rhythmic thunder, he matched his bandmate’s cheerful disposition. Both musicians made it seem as if there was nothing better than being in a rock ‘n’ roll band.

Hawkins and Grohl had such an easy, natural camaraderie that they gave the impression that they were lifelong friends, a couple of pals who bashed out sloppy, spirited punk rock as high-school classmates. This notion couldn’t be further from the truth.

Raised on opposite ends of the country — Hawkins’s family settled in Laguna Beach, Grohl called Virginia home — the pair took dramatically different paths to rock stardom. Grohl was a punk rocker drummer who wound up in Nirvana, a band who had a seismic influence on popular music in the early 1990s. Hawkins worked as a professional session musician, getting his first big break supporting Canadian blues-rocker Sass Jordan in the early 1990s. He leveraged that gig into a spot in Alanis Morissette’s touring band, joining the singer just prior to the release of her “Jagged Little Pill” album.

“Jagged Little Pill” turned into a pop phenomenon, so the irrepressible Hawkins soon was everywhere — MTV, sold-out concerts, industry events where he met such heavyweights as Grohl.

The pair became fast friends, but it took a while before they became collaborators. Originally designed as an outlet for his original songs, Foo Fighters became Grohl’s main gig after the death of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, but he had some difficulty transforming Foo Fighters into a flesh-and-blood rock band.

Foo Fighters had a smash out of the gate with Grohl’s one-man-band debut album in 1995, forcing him to quickly assemble a touring band. During the recording of their second album, 1997’s “The Colour and the Shape,” it became apparent Grohl did not click with William Goldsmith, who joined Foo Fighters after Sunny Day Real Estate came to an end. After re-recording the drum parts, Grohl called Hawkins to pick his brain about potential drummers for the supporting tour. Hawkins volunteered himsef.

Foo Fighters became a real rock band when Hawkins joined. In Hawkins, Grohl discovered a drummer who could not only play with a similar sense of fiery joy but also act as his foil. Blessed with the sun-bleached good looks of a beach bum, Hawkins exuded the charisma of a natural-born rock star, but there was nothing aloof about his public persona. He’d flash a wide smile when playing on stage, he’d ham it up on camera, don ridiculous costumes in music videos and encourage Grohl to embrace his silly side.

This levity acted as a necessary counterweight within Foo Fighters, who styled themselves as the heirs to old-fashioned arena rock. That instinct could lead the Foos down earnest musical paths that drifted toward the monochromatic — big guitars battling big drums and big hooks for sonic supremacy — but onstage, the grinning, bare-chested Hawkins gave their anthems a palpable sense of swagger and fun, along with a hint of sex appeal that was largely absent from the amiable Grohl.

Like Grohl, Hawkins was a drummer who harbored dreams of being a frontman. While he had the chance to front Foo Fighters on occasion — he sang a few lead vocals on record and recently had been given an onstage showcase where he belted Queen’s “Somebody to Love” — he indulged in these fantasies on his solo records. Cut with his ad hoc backing band the Coattail Riders — their very name a winking acknowledgment of his sideman status — his solo albums are odes to his beloved classic rock, bearing a notable trace of Cheap Trick’s power pop and a heavy debt to Queen’s pomp. These three records, the most recent of which was 2019’s “Get the Money,” didn’t get much exposure beyond hardcore Foo Fighters circles, but they’re perhaps the best distillation of how Hawkins radiated joy as he played music.

The explicit nods to classic rock on Hawkins’s solo albums started to seep into Foo Fighters, too, as the group began to play with different musical styles on later albums “Concrete and Gold” and “Medicine at Midnight,” both produced by Greg Kurstin. Here, the frivolity from Foo Fighters shows and music videos became tangible on record. They became so comfortable in their own skin they indulged in such charmingly ridiculous projects as releasing an EP of Bee Gees covers under the name the Dee Gees and starring in “Studio 666,” a horror film featuring the Foos as themselves.

When Grohl discovered Hawkins, he not only found his id but the musician who could allow him to fulfill his vision for Foo Fighters. With Hawkins at his side, Grohl turned Foo Fighters into the globe-conquering classic rock band he craved. Hawkins so fully embodied these rock star dreams that it’s now difficult to imagine Foo Fighters without him.

Proshot vid of Taylor's last concert with the Foos, at Lollapolooza Argentina.  Gets introduced starting around the one hour 11 minute mark, and then sings lead vocals on Queen's Somebody to Love. through around the 1 hour 20 minute mark.  You can see what he brought and meant to the band just in that one 10 minute stretch of video.

Kick ### show...and yeah, you can see just how much he and Grohl connect like that.  Was awesome to watch and damn sad knowing what was coming.

Also...later in that when Perry Farrell comes out and does Been Caught Stealing...freaking awesome.  Loved Janes Addiction and with foo behind him.  So so good.

Devastating loss to rock n roll. Taylor was a genuinely incredible human being in addition to being a tremendous talent on the drum kit.

I don’t know if the Foo’s continue after this.

Sucks about Hawkins.  Seems like he was unanimously thought of as a good dude.

But the Foo Fighters as greatest rock band ever?  Ummmmmm NO!

Another update, although no official cause of death has been reported but an investigation is underway.

The Attorney General of Colombia’s office has reported a urine toxicology test shows the musician had multiple drugs in his system at the time of his death, including “marijuana, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids, among others.”

Earlier Saturday, the District Secretary of Health in Colombia confirmed Hawkins died after having chest pains at his hotel in Chapinero.

“The city’s Emergency and Emergency Regulatory Center received a report about a patient with chest pain in a hotel located north of the city. An ambulance was dispatched to attend to the case,” the statement said, which FOX News translated into English.

Responders reportedly used “resuscitation maneuvers” on Hawkins, but were ultimately unable to get a response and he was declared dead.

No official cause of death has been reported but an investigation is underway

So bummed. Have tickets to finally see them in October, but obviously don’t expect that to happen. T&Ps to his family, band mates, and friends. Really sucks.

Either way would not surprise me. I could see this causing Grohl to never want to write or play music again (and he doesn't need the money), or I could see him carrying on as a tribute to this fallen friend because that is what Taylor would want him to do.

I was traveling today and cycling through FF's early discography. Everlong came on and I couldn't help but think of the video of that concert last year where the young girl filled in on drums to close the set and how magical it was. And how Hawkins held her hand and led her off stage with that huge smile on his face, and I lost it and just started bawling. First time I've cried in a long time. He had this pure joy of playing music. And I thought to myself... how will this band go on without him? And maybe it's corny, but maybe that little girl will wind up behind the Foo Fighters drum kit again someday.

Same, had tickets for a show in August. Have seen them a couple of times over the years and every time they were amazing so glad I got to see them in the past. T&P's to him and his family.

It's good to see Dave on stage!

Dave Grohl joins McCartney on stage at Glastunbury

Paul McCartney was joined by Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen for a special performance at Glastonbury Festival Saturday night. The event marked Grohl’s first public performance since the death of Foo Fighters’ drummer Taylor Hawkins on March 25.

McCartney welcomed a cheerful Grohl onto the Glastonbury stage as “my friend, your hero,” to which Grohl replied: “Hi Paul, how are you?”

Between songs, the two went back and forth on their admiration for each other with McCartney telling the crowd of roaring fans, “This guy flew in specially to do this.”

I swear, I would never miss being right here with you, right now,” said Grohl, after happily boasting that he’d made it to the England music festival after dealing with two canceled flights.

The two started with a spunky garage rock rendition of the Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There,” with Grohl adding some of the lead vocals, proceeded by Wings’ “Band on the Run,” which Grohl and the Foos covered in 2007 for a Radio 1 compilation album.

McCartney then surprised the audience with Bruce Springsteen, who joined the two on stage to play “Glory Days” as the former Beatle played bass and handled backing vocals. He also played the Beatles’ “I Wanna Be Your Man” and “The End,” with both Grohl and Springsteen participating in a guitar shred-showdown.

During the remainder of the 38-song set, McCartney sang “I’ve Got a Feeling” with isolated vocals and a video of John Lennon, as he has been performing on his own tour. His Glastonbury set comes on the tail of McCartney’s 80th birthday, which the crowd honored with a “Happy Birthday” sing-along. McCartney is the oldest solo act to ever headline Glastonbury.

You can live stream this weekends Taylor Hawkins tribute from Wembley starting tomorrow (Sat Aug 3rd) at 11:30am EST

Dave on bass, Wolfgang Van Halen on guitar and Justin Hawkins (no relation) for VH's On Fire and Hot for Teacher and holy moley Wolfy can shred like his dad!
That was awesome. Sad that the VH camp can't get out of their own way and organize a similar tribute concert for Eddie. A tour would be stupid, but and EVH tribute concert in LA could be legendary.

I don’t know how great the FF’s are, but tribute concerts like this is where Growl excels. He has worked with so many people, he is just a kid in a candy store on stage. My fav Grohl stuff is the Probot side work.
