Foodapalooza - the longest food draft of all time - The beef finally arrives in rounds 51 & 52 (1 Viewer)

I'm not really a breakfast eater, but sometimes I just wake up hungry.

Round 19  -  Apple Fritter from Shipley's

Lovely chunks of apple fried right in there.  I does violate the instruction of not eating anything bigger than your head.  These guys usually last about three breakfasts for me.

19xx. Remy Martin XO - booze, neat

HipHop can have its Hennessey, Remy will always be rock&roll's good stuff. Just sumn bout passing that heavy, elegant bottle 'round for swigs makes chords crunchier and charges the chestifying.

And cognac goes sososo well with the flake. Clears the nostrils, clears the head, clears the lights all the way downtown, #####!

But its greatest blessing is the blackouts the combo bestows. To a person who remembers everything, blackouts are bliss. And a license to kill - sumn about how a blast o Remy evens out a fat line that sacramentally absolves what they are about to do.

Two of the greatest moments of my life have occurred under that protection and i take perverse glee in only having 2nd-hand accounts of them in my memory. I apparently had relations of some kind on the hood of a car with an above-the-title movie actress outside a Santa Fe party in the 90s. Barely remembered meeting her and had no idea til hearing the "attaboy"s from witnesses days later.

And the greatest creative burst of my life took place under the same auspices. All I remember is a friend who'd been on tour a while calling me to promise some pharma-grade candy - during a dry period in the area - for our next weekly blues night, so i brought along my last b'day bottle of XO. As i've told here before, i apparently got so loaded that i freestyled the lyrics of Hendrix's "Hey Joe" for ten minutes to recreate the events of what i did with "that gun in yo' hand" in an almost Scorsesean manner. Ladies & gentleman, Natman on guitar, wikkid on vocals, Remy Martin on troof!!!

This was on my list of sleeper UDFAs for the pastry category.  We have a local place that has excellent (albeit a little smaller) ones.

Rd 19 Neat Booze: Eagle Rare Bourbon

Bourbon is really the only liquor I like neat. For me, Eagle Rare is the absolute sweet spot for price and quality.

14th Round - Trappistes Rochefort 10 (Beer)

I'm not much of a soup or stew guy, and I've already taken a few sandwiches, so let's add another beer.  This one is very much NOT an everyday drinker like my Saison Dupont pick, but it's just a beautiful classic beer.  Deep and rich, raisins, warm spices.  Absolutely world-class.

15th Round - Pastel de Nata (Pastry)

Unfortunately, I've never had the original, though someday hopefully I'll get to visit Portugal.  This is one of my go-to's if I've got a lot of time to bake, it's a little labor-intensive to laminate the dough, make the custard, let the custard cool, form the dough cups, etc.....but the end result is immaculate.

RD 19:  COLD BREAKFAST - AVOCADO TOAST

yeah, yeah ...I know.  A bit hackey. Don't care.

I rarely order this out - it's so easy to make at home.

Toasted Health-Nut bread and smooshed rip avocado - 1/2 of an avocado per side of toast.

add kosher salt, a few red pepper flakes, and a tiny drizzle of good olive oil ...

if I already have minced onion or romas I throw them on - but otherwise I don't want to take away from enjoying the buttery goodness of that avocado.

pic.

19 - fast food - Big bucket of KFC fried chicken (extra crispy)

I love fried chicken. I don't know how to make fried chicken. So I order it. And there is not much more indulgent than getting it in a big bucket.

We made the trip out to Pastéis de Belém when we visited Lisbon. They produce a huge volume of pastéis; it's kind of touristy and it was a challenge to stake out a table even on a rainy January afternoon. But the pastries were absolutely delicious and a step above the custard tarts I've eaten at Latin American or Chinese bakeries here.

I'm flummoxed by cold breakfast, and I rarely drink hard liquor, so fast food it is.

Round 19.  McDonald's Filet-O-Fish

It's a fundamental principle of most cooking that seafood and cheese don't pair well together.  The fish and the cow, they can go their whole lives, and they would never meet!  But if you pair an inexplicably square piece of just-barely-fish (some sort of pressed version of pollock) and half a slice of just-barely-dairy (is that really cheese or "cheese product"?), pour a bucket of tartar sauce on it, and put it on a bland bun?  Deliciousness!  It's the only Mickey D's non-breakfast, non-french-fry item that I enjoy, and I get one 2-4 times per year.

Pro tip:  If you, like me, don't enjoy tartar sauce, you should still get the Filet-O-Fish with the sauce, then use a hundred or so napkins to wipe all of the sauce off.  That way you get a little extra moisture on the top bun without dealing with the the general ickiness of the sauce.

19.  Instant Ramen Noodles (fast food)

Momofuku Ando's invention is a perfect 5 minute hot meal.  Instant ramen is edible with just the flavor packet but it serves better as a blank canvas for broth and filling variations.  A lot of my leftovers end up served with noodles the next day.

I'm only picking the flat bricks of ramen, those things in the styrofoam cup are still available.

Damn I didn't even think of this. Great pick.

I'm not a huge straight liquor guy, but as I got into Tiki, I got into rum and found that some rums are fine sipped on their own.  This is my favorite that's relatively easy to find.

20.x -- El Dorado 15 Year  Special Reserve Rum

I originally was going to take the 21 Year Special Reserve.  It's amazing.  But it's pricier and I'm not sure the cost is worth it over the already excellent 15 year.  And this way, I don't feel terrible about putting it in a cocktail if I'm inclined.   I think demerara rums are probably the most "accessible" sippers.  They tend to be sweet and have relatively little burn.  But this isn't a one-note rum.  The brown sugar and banana fades and the oak comes through.  There's a lot going on.

20.xx Garage-cooled Pizza, cold breakfast.

In the only ritual my family observes on my behalf, my father or sister goes to the 371 Restaurant down the hill from our house the evening of each Oct 11 and buys a sausage, banana pepper & extra cheese pie, lets it cool overnite in the back seat of the car and, in the morning, jams a candle in each slice. that is your humble servant's birthday cake since me Ma retired from baking her cheesecakes.

Developed a morning taste for cold pizza in the mid-70s when i rented a 13-room seacaptain's house in my hometown and turned it into party-central for area musicians. Boxes & boxes of crusts and fugitive slices to go with my morning cuppa. When i first moved up here to take care of me Ma, she noticed i would leave leftover slices out whenever we ordered Za and knaw at them next morning, so she ordered a pie a day ahead of time and served it to me as my birthday breakfast. Turns out that, though i never order extra cheese, adding that was an inspired choice. The way that much mozz congeals over a cool, Vermont fall night creates a sheen of grease which puts a freshkill feel on the bite. Blood on the lips, ##### - HB2me!

19. Fast food: McDonald's Sausage McMuffin with Egg

Pure greasy goodness.  Best hangover cure ever.  Also reminds of me of the start of any early morning roadtrip.

I'm behind bigly....

ROUND 16 - DINNER - PORK - SPICY NOODLE FROM THE BULGOGI + DUKHUBEE NOODLE

Our favorite Korean restaurant was a tiny hole in the wall that had an open air kitchen which was busier than Central Station most nights and showcased their cooks making hand spun noddles for everybody to witness.  Sadly, this place was a victim of Covid and had to close their doors, which really was the ultimate gut punch for us as that was our go-to take-out place that helped us survive the Twin Years of never leaving our house to dine out together.

However, they do have a 2nd location on the east side and a new version of their Korean restaurant re-opened in their old spot and while good, just not quite the same as their original recipe.  My order was always the same - Spicy Pork Noodle cooked medium and man, was it sublime.  Perfect blend of flavor, depth of spice and chewiness of their hand-spun noodles that I've never found perfected anywhere else (though I am willing to try!). What's more is that they did the veggies right - not too crunchy, not too soggy, not too big, not too small and in balance with the rest of the dish.  Pork was always my order, but chicken, beef, tofo, seafood....all were a perfect complement to their noodles.

ROUND 18 - FAST FOOD - SOURDOUGH JACK - JACK IN THE BOX

It all started innocently enough.  My parents moved up to Oregon in 2006 after failing to convince me and my sister to move back to Texas.  With them came my grandfather who needed full time care and my mother nearby to assist him.  Once he made the move to the Portland area, I would go visit him occasionally (not as often as I should have, but he was a shell of himself and could get quite mean without much notice).  And when I did, he had one request:  Bring two sourdough Jacks from Jack in the Box.  Not "One for me, one for you", no......two for him.  He was a big man.

One day I brought him the 2 Jacks, sat with him for a while and during the course of our visit he fell asleep on me, sourdough Jack #1 in hand.  I waited around a bit and figured he was out, so I put his sourdough Jack down and left with the other one.  No sense in wasting it.  Got into my car, headed out towards the highway, took a small bite and promptly devoured the whole thing.  In short, this is fast food burger perfection - well, once you remove the nasty tomatoes.

All beef patty, Swiss cheese, bacon, gobs of mayo and ketchup on vastly underrated sourdough buns.  I blame the sourdough jack on my weight cross above 200lbs in mid to late 2000's.   It was my guilty pleasure that became a bit of a bad addiction.  I could eat two in the time it took to get from work to home, which is just a shade over 10 miles.  I was hitting the joint at least once a week in the throes of addiction, tossing bags away before I got home to hide my shame.

I'm now at least 3 years away from my last sourdough Jack, but make no mistake:  I would kill at least 5 of you in there for one right now.

Round 18:  Moon Pie (chocolate) with RC Cola, Dessert/Candy

Selecting more for nostalgia than gastro-excellence, this is one of many quintessential Southern things.  Would be even better if RC was still made with cane sugar, but progress HFCS waits for no one.

Rd 20 Cold Breakfast: Protein Shake (chocolate protein powder, water, milk, banana and some frozen berries)

There's not too much exciting about a cold breakfast. It's usually an exercise in being healthy or quick. I like this because I can make it the night before and it's there to grab out the door and consume on my drive to school.

That's two snipes today.  What is going on?

Edit:  I also eat these straight out of the packet as god intended.

I can't believe I got sniped on cold pizza for breakfast.  I wouldn't cool it in the garage, but the thought is the same.

there probably aint many Houston nights where garage-cooling would have the desired effect, but xtracheez+autumnal curing is a formula for delight. and i say that as one with edibility thresholds on pizza leftovers that would embarrass George Costanza, as would most real pie vultures. sry for the snipe.... bwwwwAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!

rum is my drink of choice, thought not consuming much of anything these days.

sipping: Plantation XO, 20th anniversary, Bapt & Clem's 12 yr, ron zacapa, flor de cana (25 and 18)

Mixing: zaya, kraken

a nice mid-tier is Pilar

20.  Two Hamburgers with Everything from In-N-Out Burger

I don't eat a lot of fast food but In-N-Out is the only chain where I have a regular order.  I don't care for their fries at all and the Double Double and items off the secret menu mess up In-N-Out's perfect meat to bread to toppings ratio.  Two regular old burgers without cheese is just enough to satisfy my hunger without getting disgusting.

RD 20:  DINNER/FAST FOOD - 8 WHITE CASTLE CHEESEBURGERS & FRIED CLAMS

I have talked at length in our food threads about my resistance to vegetables  - including onions.

My senior yr HS we were able to leave the school and hit the fast food places. It also gave us time to hit up the doob.

at this point you could get a water and 5 burgers for a buck.  pretty good lunch

I even quit scraping the onions off ...

I introduced my kids to Krystal when they were young (no White Castles around) and my son - who hates onions would eat them anyway.

we live in Arkansas - and they have no White Castle or Krystal.
