Round 31  -  Mac and Cheese  -  starch-based salad

There's really not much to say here.  From Karft Dinner to the fancy stuff, it tends to be very good indeed.

I was in Chicago.  My mother didn't give me many sodas.  We couldn't afford them.  In Italy, the tap water wasn't especially dependable.  I discovered both Coke and Fanta.

you discovered Coke in Italy because you lived in Chicago?  GTFO.  Come on girl. We bought RC Cola because it was cheaper.

Chicago was known for their lack of 10 cent pops in the 70's.

did you not collect pop bottles like the rest of poor people?

Again, I didn't drink soda.  And I didn't collect bottles.  Dad's Rootbeer came in cans, I think.  I probably had soda just a few times before we moved.

31.xx Sicilian Tunny Fish Pasta Salad, starch-based salad

One of my favorite hot meals is also my favorite cold picnic item and a very popular contribution to the annual Wikkid family reunion. Melt slab of butter in a pool of grassy Trader Joe's Spanish olive oil, add copious amounts of red pepper flakes, garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice and several cans of Sicilian tunny fish filets. Emulsify w pasta water and poor over a tub of farfalle. Have yourself a bowl hot and chill the rest. Revivify @ picnic/cookout with oil, another lemon and a buncha parmesano. Scuisito!

Round 30:  Frostie Root Beer, cold non-alcoholic beverage

Circa 1975, at a rural gas station located on a dusty road, pulled from a cooler with a bottle opener mounted on the side.

ETA: ^^^ on a hot summer day.

Pretty sure I'm channeling a Jim Croce song.

Guess what I am having for lunch today.

Remind me not to bring any Tuna Helper to your picnics..

Rd 31 Wine: Malbec (from Argentina)

I didn’t look so maybe this is taken but I love dark fruity wine, particularly the South American ones I’ve had

cept for dealing with the lemon (i confess to occasionally using a lil squirter bottle when making it for myself hot, but you need the smack of the real thing for a cold batch) its as ez as Helper and has just a really fresh, live taste for being made w a tin o fish in under ten minutes. dont work so well with StarKist white, but Cento sells good tuna for around two bucks a can.

23: main dish- chicken: thought i mentioned it.... honey/lavender chicken

27: dessert frozen- baskin robbins: winter white chocolate

white chocolate flavored ice cream swirled with cherry pieces in chocolate flavored coating and a cherry ribbon.

28: raw veg- asian cucumber salad

usually with rice wine vinegar, sugar..sometimes miran, sesame oil, etc

30: meatless main: maple mushroom bowl from ... Cozy Plum

31: main dish- noodle/rice/grain: I have always known it as "hong kong style" chow mein...

crispy, thin noodles with protein /sauce/gravy of your choice..

Round 31 - Noodle dish - Bún Chả

I've never had a bad one, but my favorite so far was at Madame Tran's in Hanoi, the city where it originated.  There's something about those pressed pork patties combined with the dipping sauce and fresh herbs that hits all the right parts of one's mouth.  I like the grilled pork portion, too, but save the patties for last.  The dipping sauce is a perfect medley of sweet and sour, spice and sugar, umami and more umami.

Anthony Bourdain and Barack Obama famously had Bún Chả, some spring rolls, and a beer together in Hanoi in 2016.

ROUND 29 - BEVERAGE NON-ALCOHOLIC COLD - GINGER FIRE CHAI SUN TEA WITH MINT

Going back to my youf, my mom used to take advantage of Texas sunny days and make a big thing of sun tea on the back patio.  I don't think she used anything other than Lipton or Nestee or whatever the big brands were in the 80s/90s, but I loved a tall glass of fresh sun tea over ice, sugar and a mint leaf.

Once I left the south for the rainy Pac NW in the mid 90s, I left behind my affinity for ice tea and sort of forgot about sun tea.  Black coffee became my choice for caffeination and cold beer soothed my need for liquid ahhhhhhhhhhh.

But after my mom passed, I conjured up the fond memories of sharing her sun tea and so, about two years ago, I began making my own sun tea when the weather permits.  As my tastes have evolved, I roll with the Ginger Fire Chai  from Stash, use 4 bags, a giant mason jar, fresh mint from the garden and let that bad boy sit out under the Oregon sun all day long.  I like to add a little lime and some honey and just enjoy the libation.  If I'm feeling frisky, I'll add a little vodka.

ROUND 30 - KITCHEN GADGET - IMMERSION BLENDER

Picky kids?  Father who refuses to eat vegetables or fruits?  I present to you the Immersion Blender, a kitchen gadget that has transformed my life.  Chunky tomatoes causing a ruckus with your kids in your soup?  Pulverize them down, friend.  Father asking what the purple strand is in the meatball subs?  Blend those into the red sauce so they're untraceable.  Want to add a certain Je Ne Saiy Qwah to your lasagna by creating an airiness to it?  Immersion Blender will show you the way.  Why is my spicy crab bisque so ####### good?  Because I have left my eaters with nothing more than a velvety smooth delicious bath for fresh dungeness crab mounds to ride into your stomach and heart for all eternity.

Kitchen Gadget first ballot hall of famer.

RD 29:  DINNER - MAIN COURSE/MEATLESS - POTATO/CHEESE & JALAPENO PIEROGIES BROWNED IN BUTTER AND ONIONS

our kids godparents are born and raised Pittsburghers n'nat.

both are Czeh/Slovak and she makes these and added the jalapeno just for us. She also makes a great mushroom/onion version as well.  Gotta brown them in a skillet with some butter - fresh sage if we have any.

she also makes this weird "egg cheese" balls and even though it's fairly plain - it's pretty good.  (looked it up - called Easter cheese, Cirak or Hrudka)

RD 30:  COLD NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE - BLENHEIM GINGER ALE "OLD #3 HOT"

Old # 3 Hot- Red Cap
Our boldest flavor that tantalizes and tingles the taste buds, and goes down as smoothly as a firecracker exploding in your throat. Some say its sinus clearing heat snatches their breath away for a bit, while others thrive on the explosion of spicy ginger essence

One taste and you'll know why this feisty soft drink has been dubbed the best ginger ale on earth. In fact, the folks at the New York Times call it “the pride of South Carolina.”

I love ginger ale - I like Vernor's more because it's spicier than regular ginger ale - but it doesn't compare to this stuff.

heard about it years ago when Charles Kuralt visited them on his "On The Road" series.

great video from the show

got lucky that our local Fresh Market carries all 3 varieties though you can get it shipped.

Hong Kong style FTW--the crispier the better. They're so much better than that gummy lo mein stuff from a steam table.

HOW MANY ROUNDS IS THIS THING>>>>!!!!111k1k1u

We keep going until the final two main course categories (beef and hot breakfast) that haven't been rolled yet come up.

All the drinks/dessert categories have been rolled already and we started with more of them than main courses (11 vs 10).

I miss them both

Me too.

Foodies, what herb should I plant in my last available spot?  Somehow my chives and parsley survived the winter despite my having done zero to protect them.  Today I planted oregano, rosemary, cilantro, and dill, and I'm going to put down some basil when I can find it.  Need one more...any suggestions?  Last year I had sage and mint that I'm not repeating because they took over everything and were the ones I used the least anyway.

definitely basil

if your not doing mint - and you're already doing chives (prob most important) then probably cilantro

ever grown romas?

See above - got the cilantro covered and will plant basil.  Looking for another herb or something for a small spot.  Had some peppers out there last year too that I don't want to repeat.

Definitely going with some tomatoes this year in a giant pot I have but haven't determined what kind yet.  I don't have a lot of space for any of this, so probably just one more herb in the herb garden, the tomatoes, and maybe one more vegetable.  I am still considering those sugar snap peas...

thyme for time

23 - Potatoes au Gratin with cheddar and gruyere - cooked vegetable.

Big fan of many different potato preparations, a few of which are pretty similar to this. But this is the best. As long a you get both cheddar and gruyere in there.

24 - Sesame Chicken - main dish, chicken

You guys have hit the asian foods pretty hard, but you've missed the food court staple of Sesame Chicken and I'm happy to snap it up. I don't even know if you can get this at a nice asian place, but it's definitely going to be one of the best dishes if you're at a hole in the wall place or a food court. Which is how I grew up on asian food.

26 - Shrimp and Crab Scampi - main dish, shellfish

Had this the last night in Florida. Haven't had a scampi in a while, but I do love me a good shrimp pasta. And then you throw some lump crab meat in there? OMG.

27 - Banana Split - Frozen Desert

Ok the whole thing isn't frozen, but the ice cream is. Not much better than that whole ice cream/hot fudge/banana/strawberry combo. I don't go for this often, but I'm rarely disappointed.

28 - Peanut Buster Parfait from DQ - Frozen Dessert.

One of my first ever jobs was at DQ and this little beauty was the king - except for Blizzards. Mostly ordered by older folk who were DQ customers before the blizzard was introduced just try this once and you'll think about getting it every time. You'll mostly get a blizzard instead, but you'll think about it.

29 - Starbucks Venti Iced Coffee with 2 pumps of Mocha - Non-acoholic beverage, cold.

The go to morning drink in our family. It's mostly a nice cold coffee which tastes like coffee but with a touch of chocolatey sweetness.

30 - $1 Large Coke from McDonalds - Non-alcoholic beverage, cold.

Some people say the best coke is fountain coke, and the best fountain coke is from mcDonalds. Those people are correct.

31 - Mom's Pasta Salad - salad, starch based

This isn't going to impress anyone, but my mom made it for every family gatheric. It's basically rotini (sometimes 3-color!), broccoli, and cauliflower marinated in Kraft Zesty Italiian Dressing (in fact growing up it was always called marinated vegetables. It could change with sometimes bacon or ham or olives or pepperoni or cucumber or other ingredients but the base never changed. And it was good and it was always eaten. My wife also makes pasta salads now and objectively they're much better which my mom even admits and asks the wife to bring them to gatherings, but sometimes I want the old classic. And it makes my mom smile. (and she turns 70 tomorrow)

If I doubled up on something please let me know.
