What you say? How boring. Really? Find me a recipe that doesn't include it. I can't get enough of it. When I get a salad at a restaurant and am offered fresh ground pepper, I will let that person earn their money on the grinder. It often get uncomfortable, as they think I'm pulling some kind of joke by not saying "when", and they giggle nervously and look around the room for someone to help them and tell them how to deal with this psychopath.

5.xx Dinic's Roast Pork Sandwich, Philadelphia PA
Going to go pork 2x in five rounds because this is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had.
Roast pork, sharp provolone, broccolini, and hot peppers on a roll.
I make a version at home with a pork shoulder in the crock pot. I can find the recipe if anyone is interested. Plenty of garlic, rosemary, and of course black pepper. I haven't really gotten the broccolini just right yet, still working on it.
Going to go pork 2x in five rounds because this is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had.

For the broccoli rabe, have you tried blanching first? I blanch it for a minute, then into an ice bath, then slow sautee on low-med heat in olive oil with tons of garlic

If I’m making something savory at home for the first time, and first taste seems a little bland, my first response is almost always “add more black pepper”.

I don't generally like that much pepper; but if my mashed potatoes aren't blackened to the point of invisibility, I am not happy.

Ok, I threatened, and I always fulfill my threats. We're doubling up on cake.
And as a child of the 70's, I'm going for a very nostalgic feel. I'm hearkening back to the times when neighbors would just appear at you door to "stop over". And you'd break out the Sanka and sit in the formal living room that you never used with just your family and you'd always have a sweet prepared for the occasion. And if Mom was a badass, this was the sweet.
RD6 - Pineapple Upside Down Cake
Never mind the fact that if a neighbor tried to stop over today, I'd turn off all my lights and pretend to have been slaughtered by Vikings. We're bringing the cake back. Except, if YouTube is any indication, it's already back and I just never knew! In any case, for our recipe/video I'm choosing Chef John again. While his recipe doesn't look as good and nostalgic as a lot of others that keep the pineapple in rings and use maraschino cherries, his recipe has two things going for it, IMO:
1. Cardamom in the cake batter; and
2. MOAR pineapple and caramel/rum topping.
And that's what I'm looking for. It's the American tarte tatin. It's freaking delicious. And we have real coffee, so we don't have to serve it with Sanka anymore.

Recipe I had was to actually boil for a while (maybe 5-8 minutes) then saute. Never thought of doing a quick boil. Will try next time.

I too remember my grandma and/or aunts stopping by to shoot the breeze with my mom over coffee, and someone would often bring one of these. The bakery hasn't existed for a long time, and I've never found a replacement that tasted as fresh or as good.

Yes, yes....I can hear you - "GROSS, GM!". Jay Cutler smoking a cigarette over a urinal DOOOOOOOOOOONNNNN'TTTTT CAAAAAAARE! I developed a love for black licorice and all related candies as a youf. And when I learned that the neighborhood kids hated their black jelly beans, I learned to play the "Well, if you're just going to throw them away...." game and feigned altruism in the name of food waste by collecting all unwanted black jelly beans, thus selfishly gaining more of my favorite treat. Something about the taste just hits me in all the right spots. Kids get stuck with Good & Plenty at Halloween? BONANZA for dad.
And yes, I very much like the taste of Nyquil, Jaegermeister (sp?) and have a big bag of Star of Anise in my cupboard that will go into any Asian inspired soups or dishes. The smell, the way it lingers on my palate, and the fact that so many people dislike it makes me love it even more.

Round 5 - Appetizer - Sosa's Guacamole & Juanita's Tortilla Chips (made in Hood River, OR).
About 10-15 years ago, my sister was having a neighborhood garage sale and had a ton of baby items for sale. My sister is the quintessential Beverly Hills taste on a Modesto payroll kind of gal, so she was hoping to recoup some of the money on strollers, car seats, clothes, etc.
Along the way, a Mexican landscaper stopped his old Ford pick-up truck in front of her house and began looking for items. My sister spotted him, learned that he had a 16 year old daughter who was very pregnant and needed, well, EVERYTHING to prepare her for a new baby. Now, while my sister may not be the very best with money, there's no person I know with a heart more golden than hers. And so, when it was learned that this landscaper didn't have the sort of cash on hand needed to walk away with the Peg Perego stroller or the Britax car seats, a deal was struck. The landscaper - Sosa - agreed to do some work for my sister and in exchange, she gave him everything.
And thus, a lifelong friend was made. Sosa instantly became family and would be at many of our family dinners. He splits his time during the year living the winter months in Zihuatanejo with his wife, fishing for tuna and other big sea creatures and the other half busting his ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS in the Portland area, doing everything from painting to landscaping to light plumbing. The guy can do everything.
And that includes making the BEST guacamole in the entire world. Countless times, he will roll up, come into the kitchen with fresh avocado, lime, habanero, red onion, cilantro, serrano and ask me for a cold beer, a glass, sharp knives (they are never sharp enough for him, and he scolds me every time) a little sea salt, black pepper and magic happens, folks. I'm not kidding, he could make a business out of showing up to parties, making this right in front of the crowd and departing with cash. He's incredible. My wife makes it when he's in Mexico and it's good....but I have to fake it and pretend like hers is as good as his like she fakes being attracted to me. It evens out.
Best chips to accommodate Sosa's Guac. If you know, you know.

I gave that afor Sosa and the story, but Juanita's chips are also deserving of the love.
I knew you would know about them. They're outstanding. Have you tried the Sweet Chili chips?
