We are facing a really really bad football team tomorrow. Background - we have 2 leagues A and AA. A is for teams that are just starting out, and maybe from a small school system. AA is for teams that are established and usually but not always come from large school districts. The team in question asked to be placed in A ball this year, but was told it was full? BS right?!? So, they were put into our division. We are a pretty good team, a couple of undefeated seasons, and have seen this team play and they are pretty bad. They haven't scored a TD all year, hell they may not even have a 1st down? I dunno... But, with that in mind they are 9 and 10 year old kids. No need to break their spirits and who knows maybe one or two of them may grow up and be a great football player.

I brought up to the other coaches maybe we should let this other team score. Some were all for this idea, and others not so much.

My twins who are 10 said they don't care if we let them score, and even said they could make it look like we were really trying and not make is so obvious.

Should I speak with the other team's coach? Say, hey man we are going to let you score today? How do you do something like this and not make the other coach feel bad?

Any feedback is appreciate. Game is at 10am tomorrow. Nothing is set in stone as of now. I want to get the kids on my team who don't get a chance to play as much as others A LOT of playing time in this game. So I can get Mrs. Smith off my assss for her lil' Johnny not getting to carry the ball enough.

TIA

I can appreciate what you're trying to do but I think the best policy is to tell your kids to play their usual game. If it gets out of hand, you can certainly call off the dogs but I would say coach your team to play a good, honest game as you normally would. My $0.02

ty. I appreciate your input.

This. It could make them feel worse if a week from now some kid at school tells one of those kids that the other team let them score. Just play your game, and if It gets out of hand early play your subs a lot, and maybe even let the kids switch up some positions for fun. With my son's hockey team, if we are up big and dominating another team we will move the defensemen up to forward and slide the forwards back to D. Let's them experience a new position, and since the kids aren't used to playing them it can open up scoring chances for the other team.

Just put in your worst kids eventually. You could maybe play a few kids out of position (they usually think it's fun to do something else). Play softer coverages and tell them to focus on making the tackle after the catch rather than going for the INT or breaking up the pass.

I wouldn't just let them score, but you can do some things to raise the chances while still trying and playing legit football.

This is close to how I would handle it. 10yos? I would maybe say something to the other coach at halftime. Let him know you'd like to make sure his kids are enjoying themselves too. I wouldn't say anything that could be interpreted as belittling his team, but leave it open ended and see what he responds with.

I like the way you're thinking at least.

If you're going to let them score at least look like you're playing defense and don't tell the other coach. If you take a dive and let them score it embarrasses them more than just shutting them out.

Agree with this. Only thing you can do as a coach in this situation is put in your absolute worst players in the 4th quarter and let nature take its course. If the other team scores, then the integrity of the game is maintained.

You serious, Clark.

When I was 10, we played a cross town elementary school (actually cross county - couple rural hick schools nowhere near an incorporated village). I remember that game like it was yesterday. We were getting whupped 35-0 when late in the game we finally recovered a fumble and out together a couple first downs. On first and goal I lined up at flanker and they just flat out forgot to cover me. Right before the snap I made eye contact with our QB; he saw it. Quick two-step drop, fired a short pass which I somehow managed to not Amaro, and I just barely got to GL before getting creamed by a couple bastards. It was glorious. Sure we got whupped bad, but for that one play, that one brief shining moment, we totally dominated them.

Plan accordingly.

Never, ever, ever, tell your team that they should let the other team score.

I totally agree that you can even things up a bit with coaching decisions, but don't ever do anything to hurt the pride of the other team, because inevitably they will find out about it somehow.

I admire your intentions.

Don't let them score but make the game like a pickup game on the street once it's outta hand. Let the kids pick their positions, plays first string guys with third string guys. Basically let the kids coach the team and do what they want. Might be the most fun they have all season and maybe the other team gets a TD with kids playing new positions.

I'm sure the coaches won't go for this since they act like they're 1 step from a major college program but the kids would talk about it for years. It'll be the one game they got to play a position they'll never play again.

I think something similar happened with the Boston College basketball team and it was determined to be point shaving. Let the sharps in on your plan so no one gets any kneecaps busted.

If this is futbol then sure let them score, everyone is a winner. If this is football then play to win the game. If there are hot yoga pants wearing moms on the sideline then have your cameraman get some good pics and post them in the appropriate thread.

You think letting them score would help 1-2 of their players become great someday, or keep these potentially great 9-10 year olds from becoming great because you break their spirits??

You play your game. They play theirs. The refs intervene if need be.

Besides, doing dumb stuff and screwing around doing stuff you arent used to is how more injuries happen.

All of that- I do the same thing with my son's soccer team.

Id' even say to do it before things get out of hand- doens't sound like it's going to risk a loss for you.

Seriously, play the game straight up for a half. (Is there a continuous 2nd half clock?) Second half play looser coverage, give the less talented kids lots of PT and play accordingly. If they score, good for them. Perhaps encourage your kids to celebrate with them. They could use the encouragement and they'd remember the good sportsmanship they were shown.

Run up the score and then instead of shaking hands, have your players point and laugh at the other team.

During the game make sure your players are trash talking the hell out of the other team

Make sure your boys steal the losing team girlfriends and then take them out for steak dinners

While they score on the field, you should score off the field by having sex with the other coach's wife.

this is definatley the right answer. I appreciate what you are trying to do but it does not help anything. Pull all of the starters early on. Try kids out at new positions, etc.

OK, so the game was 55-0 after 3rd quarter. We called it "yellow dig" and the kids sold it brilliantly. The other team ran a QB sneak for a 50 yard td for their first of the year. The team was really bad, really, really bad. Our kids made several "attempts" at tackling their qb, and following just 1 step behind him on the way to the end zone. Their stands were going crazy, and their kids had smiles on their faces the rest of the game.

I told my kids 30 years from now you will probably never remember many if any scores of games you played in, but you will always remember letting another team score to make their season.

That coach is going to be kicking himself for not running a quarterback sneak earlier in the game

That play was money ?

I remember beating a team in baseball 38 to 0.

we were told to swing at every pitch after the second d inning

Funny. We were playing a team last year when after the 1st inning it was called. Fall league no max run rule per inning. It was 22-0, and as soon as the other team's at bat was over the umpire called "GAME!" We had played maybe 35 minutes of a scheduled 1:30 game 33 minutes were us batting, and of course they went down 1, 2, 3. No one even made an issue out of it. We had told the boys to bunt on every pitch after we were up 10 - 0.
