FOOTBALLGUYS MAGAZINE JUST ARRIVED (1 Viewer)

Got mine yesterday. What page is the Golden Ticket on again? A couple of "Random Thoughts" after going through the first half of the mag..

1) Reggie Bush, in a Saints uniform, with the number 5? Okay, I can see the Saints uni as we now know he's a Saint. But you missed the boat on the number. I realize its a photo cropped USC pic and changing the number might not have been possible. If that was the case, you shouldn't have used Bush. Go with someone else like Tiki from last year. Someone that you know who they will be and what number they will have. Its like saying to a prospective buyer: "This info is from MAY (or earlier). For more up to date, you have to go to our website." If that’s the message you want to send, then great. I don't think that’s the case though.

2) Joe's Random Thoughts. Did you really need to have this in the magazine? Granted, they are humorous when they are timely during the year, but now nine months later, they are kinda stale.

3) Apparently msg board members can be banned for posting scantily clad women on the board. Apparently, if you are paying for an ad in the magazine though, this is not a problem. Can’t really ban a paying sponsor now can we?

4) The whole concept of a magazine is leaving me wanting more. I don’t think I will get it next year because of this. First, when looking through the ranking, I realize that they are very dated. For example, Dom Davis is ranked fairly high. But we know that his knee was giving him problems at the last OTA. So does this justify his high ranking or did the Staff assume that he would have been fine at the latest OTA, and seeing as he is not, then shouldn’t he be lowered? If he is lowered, who moves up? I enjoy the website and use the tools there. I just don’t see a value in the magazine for one of your website subscribers.

That being said, I am enjoying the magazine. After all, where I read it doesn’t have an internet connection. But I just don’t think it has that much ‘value’ for a site member. That’s just me.
hey dave,i thought lots of board members have avatars with women in bikinis... i looked through mag cover to cover & didn't recall any ads that would be objectionable or not allowed as avatars... was their a specific ad you were referring to?

as to the possibility that some rankings might be dated by the time they hit the shelves, it is inevitable that some news may break after the deadline to get to the publishers/printers...

that said, there are some articles that aren't on the site (yet)... with new drafts for start up leagues going on year round, if the vast majority of content isn't dated, i could see how it might be helpful to them... but if you can wait for said articles to hit the site (or don't have need), than i could see how site might provide some with everything they need... except for bathroom reading material! :)

thanx for the feedback...

 [Grammar Police]

I think he's upset that sideline is misspelled as "SIDLINE" in the ad on page 61 and that one of the offensive lines reviewed is the "Seattle Seattle".

Hi dave,Thanks for the feedback. We need that to improve.

Real quickly to your points.

1. Reggie Bush will be in #5 for all his football card and promo material. The decision that he couldn't wear #5 came down as we were going to press. We had time to change but did not for a couple of reasons. #1. The recognizability factor. Reggie Bush in a Saints uniform is not a highly recognizable guy. Sure he is among you hardcore guys here, but not for the average guy in the store. We felt he was highly attached to the #5 and not using it would have pushed up the "who is that" factor to unacceptable levels. #2. As I said, he'll be featured in all his football cards and promo stuff with #5.

2. I wonder too if the timing is too late for the Random Shots.

3. The magazine ads were something we just made a mistake with. The way that the process worked with the people actually building the files for the magazine was such that we didn't get to see the ads until it was too late to change. We don't have the gambling ads because of the recent legal issues with sites that "aid" the offshore sportsbooks (Sporting News just paid a multi million dollar fine) and I would rather the ads be more line with what ESPN or those magazines accept.

However you're 100% dead wrong if you think anyone has ever been banned for posting a picture of a girl in a thong. Our guideline of what we'll accept for the magazine next year is actually a lot more conservative than what will work here.

4. I understand fully the magazine weaknesses. It's primarily one of timing. When we went to press, Steve McNair was a Titan. And Ben Roethlisberger was flying around town on his Hiyabusa with a titanium plate free face. Things change.

For us the magazine is a fantastic appetizer for the season. It gets folks started and offers a portable way to carry around a big chunk of the website for $6.99. If you order online for $8.99, you get the magazine plus a ton of other discounts including free training camp reports for everyone and the opportunity to be one of the 12 guys in our $1,000 league. But if it's not for you, I fully understand that too.

If you'd like to return the magazine for a refund, I have a money back guarantee. Shoot me an email at bryant@footballguys.com and I'll take care of it.

Thanks.

J

Thanks Joe.

Just having the staff respond is one reason why I continue to subscribe here. With the magazine, again, it’s an advantage over other publications that may be available. When was the last time Disney would even think about answering a question from someone who bought an ESPN magazine? Never, and then some. So thank you for listening. I honestly meant those comments to be constructive criticism and not slams or calling out anyone. And, seeing as it was my first magazine purchase, I really didn’t have anything to compare yours with. That was a mistake as I realize now. As for the individual issue we agree on most of all of them. The point I was making about the ads is not that members of the boards, whether with avatars or anything else, have been banned for posting them, but rather that there is a thin line between what is acceptable and what isn’t. I understand that running a msg board is a constant battle between members that push the envelope and mods that have to enforce that boundary. We all witness it every day in the FFA and the Pool. But I thought the magazine would have been different as the Staff would have complete control of the content until the boards. So I was surprised when I saw the ads. Instantly it became not a magazine that I could leave around for the kids, but one that I have to monitor who had it and who didn’t. Again, not a problem. And I realize that it’s more my problem than your problem. I was just expecting not to worry about that from your magazine. As I mentioned before, as a rookie mag owner, I should have thought about that before.

As for the timing of the magazine, again, it’s not a problem. The point that I was making here was that your site is so good, that the magazine, to me, isn’t worth it. That’s one of those backhanded compliments. You offer free access to everything until late into August. If I wasn’t a subscriber and had the chance to use your site until August, or buy the magazine in June, I’d use the site every time all summer long. I understand the business concepts for each model. Really, I do. I was just saying that to me, a subscriber, it wasn’t worth it.

In closing, it’s a great magazine and you should be proud of it. I was just answering your call for feedback and noting some comments that I noticed. Again, thanks for noticing and taking the time to answer. Dave.

Thanks Dave. I hear you on the ads. That'll change for 2007. Live and learn. I understand completely what you're saying on the "backhanded compliment" thing. No worries.

Thanks and here's wishing you a successful 2006.

as someone wh used to buy the mags, until this site.. this is by far the cleanest.. just my two cents...

and I agree with Dave, the fact that ALL the staff care, and repsond when they can is huge bonus, whether it be dynasty discussion, service, or whichever...

keep up the good work, glad to be here

I got an insert, I think (free training camp reports?).

Since I'm already paid up for the next three years I won't be using it.

I don't know if it has been discussed yet, but McNabb's projections are incorrect. Him and Vick have the same numbers accross the board and since it has them for 15 PTDs, that must be a misprint for McNabb.

I geuss I wasn't one of the chosen special ones because i got my Magazine today and no yellow ticket. Boo Hoo WaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaH

dude, you should not have to worry about leaving that mag around your kids. It's the human body, and if your kids are over the age of 5, they've seen worse in school.

Agreed. I mean, I have seen the cheerleaders at halftime showing more skin, 360 degrees. I wonder if he shoos the kids away from the TV at gametime? Honestly. No offense, but did I miss some particular ad? P. 51 was mentioned before, and I'm not seeing that one as corrupting the kids...the park pool, the beach, etc. all show more. :loco:

Got mine in Saskatchewan today. I'm considering selling it 'unopened' on Ebay before the other Golden Tickets turn up...

Dang it. it 'slipped' open. No ticket either.

Thanks for letting us Canucks play, Joe and David.

Ordered on the 13th and still waiting in WI :(
Got mine on the 21st :) No golden ticket for WI  How do you get a 3.00 discount when you already signed up for 3 years before you order the magazine? Also have the training camp reports with my subscription so... Great stuff though. Somewhat dated but alot of good information there.
