Footballguys Subscriber Contest is LIVE (2 Viewers)

Sweetening the pot a little here for Shark Pool posters.

Prize payout structure is sweet:

If you post your lineup here by noon ET Wednesday, and don't change it before lock, I'll add a $100 prize to whatever you win and a lifetime Footballguys subscription if you finish in the top 100.
Wow this is amazing. Lifelong subscription would be a dream.

Ya I had 3 originally and have been going back and forth. Maybe I should do 3.
On the one hand, if you get super lucky & they both stay healthy you can spend $X elsewhere.

On the other hand, miss just one inopportunely timed injury & you’re eliminated.

Not a bad insurance policy to have 3.

Dammit Joe, that's 12 full hours early!  So much can happen in 12 hours.  I really am curious to see how many total entries we get this year though.  My guess is around 8K.  Anyone else care to throw out a number?

I feel like Joe's sweetening of the pot is going to boost it.  This thread will likely be one of the top 3 in the SP for the next 24 hours straight.

It costs us $35,000 whether it's 1000 entries or 20,000. I just like to see more people having a shot.

The shark pool won't make any dent. There's relatively so few people here compared to how many play.  This is purely just a shark pool gift.

Last year I only had 2 (Brees/Ljax) worked out in the end but I was sweating the week Ljax was on bye (Week 9 I believe) and that was the week Brees finally came back after getting injured earlier in thr season. Had he not im sure im positive I wouldnt have made it past that week. If you can swing a cheap alternative its worth not having to sweat the turk!

Well that's very generous of you to give out all those subscriptions and extra money.  I hope it comes back to you guys in some way and maybe you get a few new subscribers from those reading this thread anyways.

I just can't find any way to trim my team that I'm happy with.  So I might roll with 2.  You need a ton of luck and things to go right to finish top 100 anyways, figure going risky is probably the better bet as so many entries will play it safe.

This is very true. Last year for the first time ever i hit on players I needed to hit on and except for Brees stayed relatively injury free. Yoi can only do so much "roster tactics" but ol Lady Luck has the last say....lol!

Agreed.  The people that regularly visit this thread from year to year is a small fraction of actual entries.  Watch how few people actually post their rosters by noon tomorrow.

Thanks.  Screw it, I'm rolling with my two.  If I can't pass the mid season hurdles than I don't deserve the big prize.
Think of it this way - if your top priced QB goes down, you are toast anyway, right?  If you are counting on a 3rd stringer to carry you, how far do you really expect to get?

It’s a hedge for sure.  i have 3 modestly priced QBs - and the top one is a running QB, which seems to add a little risk.

I’m more comfortable running with 3. I like my investments elsewhere.

plus back to the D/ST discussion - best ball format. Even great QBs have sucky weeks. Never hurts to have a 3rd for that contingency as well.

Week 1 trim to 13,500 teams (all advance if we have fewer entries)
Week 2 trim to 10,000 teams
Week 3 trim to 6,500 teams
Week 4 trim to 4,500 teams
Week 5 trim to 3,200 teams
Week 6 trim to 2,200 teams
Week 7 trim to 1,500 teams
Week 8 trim to 1,100 teams
Week 9 trim to 750 teams
Week 10 trim to 500 teams
Week 11 trim to 250 teams

Will there be a week 1 cutoff?  I say no, and it's not uncommon
Will there be a week 2 cutoff?  I say no, but it would be the first time ever

Your team has been successfully entered.

I went back and forth on Henry 50x

I’d diversify him to 2 and even 3 players. $30 is such a boat anchor on your budget.

In the end I figured luck favors the bold, and maybe many teams won’t be investing $30 in one player.

But if he returns on the investment I’ll sure love the production he puts up for the $, and at the end of the day you still need to put up points.

But for sure that was my most difficult call. It could easily prove to be a bad one.

It'll be interesting. This has been by far our worst year in many years for people buying a subscription. We're taking a big hit on revenue. Not sure how that will factor into this.

Certainly grateful you’re doing the contest. I waited until I knew my league was drafting to re-up my sub, but I’m happy I did and super happy this contest is going. Last year was my first in the subscriber contest (my fault for missing it before) and I really loved the format.

it definitely played a part in my renewal, along with DD and the terrific content from your writers.

hopefully there’s a last minute surge. Heh FBG-ers - if you’re reading this, SUBSCRIBE!

I like this team alot

Almost did a spit-take.  You don't even consider Sony a RB?  Too funny
Sadly I do. I actually need him to be one this year in dynasty.

but in the subscriber contest that’s a 3.5 RB roster. That’d make me nervous is all.

ya never know - maybe Sony is the magic sauce that pulls the recipe together.

I'm about to do my part and buy a second subscription.
Thank you so much but for sure, don't do that unless you really just want an extra contest entry. I don't mean to be playing the sympathy card. We'll be fine.

I just was thinking in terms of this contest, entries may be down.

Well I can’t turn down the chance at $100, even though I’m an “I don’t wanna jinx it” kinda guy.

but then you’re also doing me a solid since now I can’t change it again.

here it is:

QB - Matt Ryan - 16
QB - Ben Roethlisberger - 11
QB - Philip Rivers - 8
RB - Derrick Henry - 30
RB - Kareem Hunt - 17
RB - Tarik Cohen - 14
RB - Zack Moss - 10
RB - Chase Edmonds - 8
RB - Benny Snell - 4
WR - JuJu Smith-Schuster - 23
WR - Deebo Samuel - 12
WR - Christian Kirk - 12
WR - Preston Williams - 12
WR - Anthony Miller - 10
WR - Justin Jefferson - 9
TE - Zach Ertz - 20
TE - Blake Jarwin - 9
TE - Jonnu Smith - 9
PK - Mike Badgley - 3
PK - Joey Slye - 3
PK - Stephen Gostkowski - 2
TD - New York Giants - 2
TD - Arizona Cardinals - 2
TD - Cincinnati Bengals - 2
TD - Las Vegas Raiders - 2

Total value: 250

🙏

ETA: lifetime subscription?! OMG! :pickle:
Lucky lifetime winner the season Pit played Green Bay in SB XLV. Thanks for serving up these contests! Agonizing over roster combinations makes it my annual favorite.

Good luck to the posters here!!!

It's for my better half. She wants to win this contest.

2 QB's making it to the finals is very common.  The top 3 teams last year only had 2.
I remember when the discussion was whether to roll with just 1 QB or 2 when Brees or Rodgers had week 4 byes and it was pretty easy to make it that far.  Don't remember if 1 or a 2 QB team won those years but maybe someone else does.

Hi @Joe Bryant Would it be OK when I post my top 100 lineup to include a footnote that the $100 bonus should be routed to your food piggy bank for your charity BBQ you do?

eta - Really cool of you to throw in this kicker in a down year.  Hope it results in good karma for you.

Cheap at QB, K and D. Value and volume at RB, WR and TE. Show me the money! (And lifetime subscription). Thanks FBG for this contest...my favorite puzzle to try to solve every year.

I finished in 120th last year despite wasting $30 on JuJu, $9 on Brieda and $6 on Gordon.

For many years, I selected teams with 22-25 players, having 8 or 9 WRs, 3 or 4 TEs, 3 Ds and 3 Ks and never made it to the final 250.  I found that with only 3-4 higher priced RB/WR/TE, I would eventually get knocked out after one of my higher priced players got hurt and another had a bye as a bunch of 10 rushes for 37 years or 2 catches for 48 yards from my cheap players just didn't provide enough firepower to replace the missing higher priced players.  However, what it probably really showed is that I am extremely bad at picking the correct cheap players.

Last year, I went with an 18 player lineup for the first time 5 RBs, 5 WRs and 2 at the other spots and got lucky enough to be in the final 250 for the first time so I will probably roll with 18 again.  General rules are of out of 12 RB/WR/TE no more than 2 can share a bye week so I have least 10 going (before injuries) to fill 7 spots with preferably no 2 from the same position.  So here goes-

QB - Drew Brees - NO/6 - $15
QB - Matthew Stafford - DET/5 - $14

These two were among the top 5 or so last year on a per game basis.  While they are both are an injury risk, I think they are both discounted too much.  In addition, the early byes lessens the possibility of playing with no QB.   They both have ok matchups on the other's bye week. Roethlisberger was considered here but not really anyone else.

RB - Ezekiel Elliott - DAL/10 - $34
RB - Josh Jacobs - LV/6 - $26
RB - James Conner - PIT/8 - $23
RB - Antonio Gibson - WAS/8 - $9
RB - Chris Thompson - JAX/7 - $5

$97 is too much to spend on running backs but I am having a hard time moving off of Zeke, Jacobs, and Conner.  Zeke is about as reliable as it gets and I just can't get comfortable downgrading but still spending $27 on a rookie in Edwards-Helaire.  However, I would like that $7 to spend elsewhere.  I have considered Ekeler but am struggling on that also.  Gibson breaks my rule of no two position players with the same buy but he seems a very worthwhile dart throw but not strong enough to negate the need for a 5th RB which is why I have Thompson in the lineup.  David Johnson would be in my lineup but he also has a week 8 bye and I think Conner has more upside.  I had Chubb last year. While he seems decent and should get more TDs than last year, he just didn't have the upside with Hunt there.

WR - Calvin Ridley - ATL/10 - $21
WR - D.J. Chark - JAX/7 - $17
WR - Tyler Boyd - CIN/9 - $16
WR - Marvin Jones - DET/5 - $13
WR - Sterling Shepard - NYG/11 - $11

These 5 should be fine although $78 seems a little low to spend here.  Chark, Jones and Shepard have been in almost every combination as I like them and their bye weeks match up well with my RBs & TEs.  The Ridley and Boyd slots spent most of the time as a Rams WR and a Houston WR - Cupp or Woods paired with Cooks or Fuller. Ultimately, i decided to reduce my K/D by $2 to switch to Ridley and Boyd as their bye weeks are better. I would love to get Adams here.  I have considered downgrading Zeke to CEH and either QB to Roethlisberger which would give me $10 or $11 to upgrade Ridley to Adams but have not done it.

TE - Zach Ertz - PHI/9 - $20
TE - Darren Waller - LV/6 - $17

Loved having Kelce last year but couldn't free up the money since there was no $9 Mark Andrews and I spent more on RBs this year. Waller was in the lineup from the start as he is competing with a bunch of rookies for targets. They may be talented but they are still rookies. I liked but not loved a few of the $9-$12 options but decided to pool the money together and get Ertz  given Philly's WR situation.  $37 seems about the right amount to spend at TE.

PK - Chris Boswell - PIT/8 - $3
PK - Stephen Gostkowski - TEN/7 - $2

I would spend a little more here if I could free up a couple of bucks.  However, I think these two should keep their jobs.

TD - New York Giants - NYG/11 - $2
TD - Arizona Cardinals - ARI/8 - $2

I wanted Tenn's D but spent the last $1 at WR.

All comments and suggestions are appreciated.

RB - Ezekiel Elliott - DAL/10 - $34
RB - Josh Jacobs - LV/6 - $26
RB - James Conner - PIT/8 - $23
RB - Antonio Gibson - WAS/8 - $9
RB - Chris Thompson - JAX/7 - $5

WR - Calvin Ridley - ATL/10 - $21
WR - D.J. Chark - JAX/7 - $17
WR - Tyler Boyd - CIN/9 - $16
WR - Marvin Jones - DET/5 - $13
WR - Sterling Shepard - NYG/11 - $11

TE - Zach Ertz - PHI/9 - $20
TE - Darren Waller - LV/6 - $17
I feel like this is solid...I've had similar roster iterations.  I had Waller but then cut my TE budget, etc. to have 6 RBs and 6 WRs.

As Joe's volunteer attorney, I would like to point out that Joe's offer should NOT be interpreted as:

If you post your lineup here by noon ET Wednesday, and don't change it before lock,

I'll add a $100 price to whatever you win [even if you win zero]

and

a lifetime Football subscription if you finish in the top 100.

rather, it should be read as:

I'll add a $100 price to whatever you win and a lifetime Football subscription

IF you finish in the top 100.

/end disclaimer

(I've got your back Joe...just saved you up to $800,000!).

Joking aside, nice touch.

Well I'll give you an example of a sort.  Take Bell with the Jets.  Gase is basically a moron and he's butchered the relationship so it's the kind of situation that leads me to believe that he'll have low ownership at the price he is at.  At the same time he is a former #1 overall fantasy back who certainly is still young enough to regain that touch.  That's the kind I have in mind.

(side note this was for illustrative purposes only - I won't be putting Bell on my teams)

This is pretty awesome.  It kinda screws me up a little though as I budgeted tomorrow night for a lot of my work  so I'll think about it :excited:

Week 1 trim to 13,500 teams (all advance if we have fewer entries)
Week 2 trim to 10,000 teams
Week 3 trim to 6,500 teams
Week 4 trim to 4,500 teams
Week 5 trim to 3,200 teams
Week 6 trim to 2,200 teams
Week 7 trim to 1,500 teams
Week 8 trim to 1,100 teams
Week 9 trim to 750 teams
Week 10 trim to 500 teams
Week 11 trim to 250 teams

Will there be a week 1 cutoff?  I say no, and it's not uncommon
Will there be a week 2 cutoff?  I say no, but it would be the first time ever
Going to load up my team with week 2 bye players now :)
