Over the next four weeks, Footballguys.com will provide fantasy football content for The Fifth Down blog. About 20 million people play fantasy football, and about 19,999,999 are looking for an edge (except for That Guy).

But even if you’re not an enthusiast, the observations and arguments in the daily blog posts should be relevant to non-fantasy fans.

Subscribers to Footballguys receive five sets of projections and many more sets of rankings, including ones specialized for redraft leagues, dynasty leagues and points per reception leagues. My favorite part of Footballguys is the Draft Dominator, the best drafting tool I’ve ever seen.

You’ll also get access to hundreds of preseason articles, including player spotlights, player face-offs and my player points series (all three available here: http://footballguys.com/articles.php).

Footballguys’ free daily e-mail list is available at http://footballguys.com/updates.php.

We welcome your feedback and hope you enjoy the series.
Here's the first of the 20 articles written by FBG staffers that will appear on the Fifth Down Blog over the next four weeks:http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07...-running-backs/

In 1989, Barry Sanders helped start the trend of declaring for the N.F.L. draft while forgoing remaining college eligibility. These days, it’s common to see talented juniors leave school a year early and “take their talents” to the N.F.L. Running backs typically have the easiest adjustment to the next level; unsurprisingly, we see several young running backs declare early for the draft every season. What does this mean for fantasy owners?

I noted the age of all running backs who ranked in the top 24 in each of the last 40 seasons (using a scoring system of 6 points for all rushing/receiving touchdowns, 0.1 points per rushing/receiving yard, and 0.5 points per reception). As you can see, over the past couple of seasons, very young running backs are becoming bigger fantasy factors:

And Chase is being modest here. This is mostly "Chase kicks butt and lands a gig with the NYTimes and helps Footballguys".

Great job, GB.

:kicksrock:Great stuff. Hoping not too many of my leaguemates read the NY Times...
Don't worry about that. Circulation of the NYT and almost every other news paper (except the WSJ) drops every single month. Being that 88% of the NYT online readers wont even sign up for their freepaywall trial, the NYT is dying rather quickly. I am not trying to rain on anyone's parade, it is still pretty cool to be featured in it. Congrats!

Yeah, I told them their little paper sucked and would be out of business soon as they have no readers. But just to be nice, we went ahead and threw them a bone. What can we say, we're givers. J

You didn't tell them anything that they didn't already know. Sadly news papers are dying faster than magazines.

Dude, you got it going on! Everyone knows that. It looked like you wrote about half of the site's content for the past two weeks. ;)BTW - interesting article Joe posted on his FB Wall about Internet and the revenue the Times generated in advertising that exceeded the Huffington post despite far fewer readers...I think newspapers and magazines are changing dramatically, but I think their complete demise will be greatly exaggerated when we look back 20 years from now.

I made the comment because another poster said that they were worried about their league mates reading the NYT and seeing the article. I just pointed out that the medium is quickly sinking with out any sort of life raft around. I am happy for the guys and its cool to say you have been in the NYT. But lets not forget why we do not have a FBG magazine, print is dead, nobody reads anything on paper any more.

But we're appearing on the NY Times website, on their football blog. What's that have to do with print? :kicksrock:

'But lets not forget why we do not have a FBG magazine'. This is news(Print) to me. I received mine just Yesterday. You seem to be falling behind your League mates, but I'm sureChase will get you caught up after you read the NYT. :toilet:

LMAO at above . This is awesome stuff, to think of all the people paying attention to FF online since the use of 14.4 baud modems and usenet newsgroups! I still remember getting the first email from Joe on my Prodigy account. Now the NYT.

Congrats once again GB. Tearing it up. When are you quitting this whole law thing and going pro?

I could give print two extra shots at close range to the Dome and the Times would still be THE TIMES.

And great work by all involved. As expected.

Good point, BuddyBall. Nobody reads anything on paper, me included. If only there were some way for me to read these FBG contributions to the NYT without having to purchase a newspaper. Does anyone have any ideas for me? :goodposting: Congratulations to the staff. And you're joining some of the best in the biz, too- the Times' sports blogs have featuring sharp contributions from well-respected experts and other commenters for quite some time now, and you all are no exception.
