Game of Thrones, tv only, books don't exist, no backstory...NERDS already ruining a series that hasn't started (9 Viewers)

He was used for at least one purpose and maybe another in the future.

1) He was solely used to establish that resurrection is possible in this story.  Without being shown that resurrection is possible, Jon being brought back would be a giant wtf moment.

2) He likely replaces the Red Priestess at the wall.  I assume Davos calling out Melisandre at the wall won't end well for her.  We know Beric* is heading north, which gives us a follower of the Lord of Light (Thoros) at the wall for the big showdown.  Also, Beric* (Did you seriously think his name was Eric?!?!) has shown before that he lights his sword on fire.  Fire > Wights.  

Seems like his presence is absolutely needed for this story.

 
Derek fought the hound too and the hound won which set the stage that he's important to the LoL.  And they got arya to go with him which got her to the red wedding a day late and then the Vale and then she met brienn of tar and left the hound to die and then went to bravos and then got boring and now she's coming back too.

And Derek and the drunk dude taught the red lady how to bring someone back and then she got everyone killed,  turned into gollum and saved Jon snow who led 11 to his death like the ******* he is. 

And now Derek recruited the hound into his little army so they're going to do some more killing soon.   

So he's not just a one off Robin hood clone.   He's a Robin hood clone with an eye patch who comes back from the dead and doesn't really give much back to the poor.   Totally different.

Just watched for a second time, and it was just as intense and exhausting as the first time. Just incredible, one of the best hours of television ever IMO.

I watched the most recent episode for a second time last night, and think that could have been the greatest cavalry battle we have ever seen in cinema.  I loved Braveheart, and they set the bar for huge battles, but CGI has made things possible that weren't back then.  The combination of real horses, and CGI made it incredibly realistic.  Instead of just seeing horses beside people fighting, we got to see what it would be like in a violent battle.  The speed of everything was amazing.  The violent collisions, and when the Knights Vale split the ground troops were awesome.

Agree, good cavalry battle.

But when the Knights Vale showed up, the CGI made it look like they were mowing them down with a semi-truck rather than horses.

Cersei isn't the only one Little Finger has betrayed. As long as Bran and his visions are hanging around there are ways for his betrayals to be exposed. If Bran finds his way to Jon and Sansa that wouldn't bode well for Little Finger.

If Bran finds his way to Jon and Sansa it will be with a horde of White Walkers right behind him.  So they'll all have bigger issues, also since he's in command of The Knights of the Vale he's got control of a sizeable force.

 
three slick moments likely lost in the rest of the fun:

1. Jon tossing aside his scabbard just before the battle is met.

2. Ramsay taking Jon up on the single combat offer in the end.

3. The Tyrion / Greyworm riddle

 
The North is basically void of manpower. After the Five Kings War, the massacre at the Red Wedding and now the Battle of the Bastards. It has been bled badly.

Have you seen men trampled by thousands and thousands of pounds worth of horse? I haven't, so I'm willing to not nitpick.

I agree with him and while I haven't either, I noticed the difference as well when I saw the aerial view. It isn't nitpicking, but it definitely didn't have the same gritty battle feel that the down on the ground view had. I know you'll likely take this the wrong way since I remember some earlier posts where it seemed like someone was kicking your kid/dog, but it reminded me of Survivor in terms of the editing they do on challenges. No, I am not comparing the show to Survivor, but when you watch the challenge, seeing the contestants doing the challenge is way more real than their horrible edited fake challenge in aerial views above the challenge. When you watch, you can tell what is real and what is their fake take to get a better shot. When you watched the battle, the aerial view of the KOTV seemed out of place to me. Not bad, just obvious that it was CGI.

 
I rewatched it last night. Great episode, but I agree with the earlier comments about the giant. Compared to Hardhome and the battle at Castle Black, he looked completely inept. I know they didn't want him to do too much, but seeing him run with Jon to the gate after seeing him doing literally nothing when they got encircled was just a punch to the gut. He was a great character and was awesome before the battle. There is a part where Ramsay is looking on before the KOTV come into the picture where he is literally waving at air. The fact that they show him grab a burning log in Hardhome and then he doesn't even bother to grab any of the thousands of trees right behind him in the battle makes very little sense. How about at least letting him smash through the line a little bit?

Also, his death was even worse. Fine with all the arrows, he likely still survives them, but Ramsay dealing the death blow was just bad. Jon's crew comes in and kills all the Bolton archers on the wall and even the ones that come through the opening after they kill all the guys in the courtyard. Somehow, no one even sees Ramsay, so he just takes his time and kills Wun Wun and then they all draw their arrows on him. Did he have some cloak of invisibility? He was in the courtyard to start and didn't go anywhere and when they show Jon going after him, there is not a single person left standing anywhere around him.

Loved the episode, but they really neutered Wun Wun during the battle and in his death. Sucks, he was a great character and a nice ally for Jon.

 
The aerial view of the Vale army plunging in was freaking awesome. Everything about the battle scene was amazing. There is nothing anyone can say that will change my feelings about this episode. This was a GOT classic and one of the greatest hours of television I've ever seen. The quality was on a cinematic level. It was that good. Like I said before with how great this was I can only imagine how incredible the battle with the White Walkers will be. I'm guessing that will blow the roof off the joint.

This is the theme of the whole show imo.  People dying left and right for all the stupid politics and so few true leaders.   There's only 6 armies left that aren't completely decimated - dorne, danny, the flower people, the priests, bravos, and the zombies.  And two of those were just lined up against each other in king's landing. 

Remember when stannis and tywin and all them were talking about armies of 30,000 or 40,000?  The battle of winterfell was 3000 vs. 6000 until a few hundred knights of the Vail came in.

I honestly can't think of a single thing in this episode I didn't enjoy. It was that good. This was an episode I wished I could've seen on a movie screen. It had that type of feel to it. The scope of it went beyond a typical TV episode.

Outside of the Dothraki, perhaps THE most sizeable force?  Whose would be bigger?  Lannisters?  I don't know.  How many Knights of the Vale are there?

The lannisters got decimated by the starks.  They had to ask the flower people for their army in case there was trouble with the priests
