Because for being the "greatest military general" he sure got completely owned on on his "Siege of Winterfell".

Way back in season 1, he got pretty severely burned when he saved Mormont from the zombies by lighting them on fire. Whatever his parentage, he wasn't a "dragon" like Danaerys.

He really did a great job this episode. Dont think hed of taken Winterfell even if he had his full army, he was that outmatched. Gotta wonder when the red witch realized this or whether she possibly knew all along.

plus Ramsey burned their siege weapons and food.

they didn't have a chance, even if the guys with horses had stayed. boltons just needed to stay in the castle and let team Stannis freeze and starve to death.

After he burned his daughter at the stake, he had no choice but to play this til the end. Red Witch left and he still pushed ahead with that rag tag army. By not taking Winterfell, he sacrificed her for nothing.

He seems to always find a way out alive in those giant battles. At the battle of BlackWater, wasn't he amongst the men up front and still managed to make it out alive.

If Stannis doesn't sacrafice his daughter he goes back to castle black and perhaps jon snow doesn't get murdered and stays at Castle Black to fulfill his oath. But since that never happens,jon gets murdered, the red witch heads back to castle black to bring him back and he will be the one burning the Bolton banners. Her vision comes true due to her vision.hmm

Yes, he actually climbed a ladder and was on the wall taking archers out, leading the way too.

Some narrow escapes on his part where maybe he 'should' have died, but I'm okay with that. I was actually going to use Drogo to support my claim that people on their way to death, die. He came back in a dream sequence or something and that was it.

I don't know.. to me there's a clear difference in how they exited the Sansa/Theon & Hound scenes versus how they exited the Stannis scene, but I'm obviously in the minority on that one.

The only reason I can think for keeping him alive would be to have him confess that he killed Renly with black magic. Brianne has been at the very least suspected of killing him, and in some cases blatantly accused.

Roose doesn't care about Stannis, he cares about ruling the North. He needs Sansa for that.

oh- I agree he didn't have a choice... other than full blown retreat to castle black (which, IIRC, was too far without horses or food).

And then there is Ramsey who flayed at least one person alive in front of his kids because he wouldn't pay his taxes after they took over. That might have made a few people come to the conclusion that just doing what they say isn't so bad.

Robb took 20000 soldiers - most of the north's armies south

Bruce Bolton was one if his advisors

Greyjoy daughter attacked with 30 ships

Theon attacked a random port near winterfell

bran sent all of winterfells remaining soldiers to the port

theon captured winterfell

Robb sent 500 soldiers to retake it

They sent 2000 soldiers to trick tywin, all of them died

They sent 18000 to capture Jamie

some died

Then a bunch more fought and died

then bruce, the guy that owns the bridge, and tywin cooked up the red wedding

lots more soldiers got killed

Bruce got control over the north by decree from kings landing as a reward for his help

Theon lost his dong

they spent more time showing the dong thing

There really arent any drugs in GoT so he could instead focus his time on his roc... mineral collection. im sure there's lots of interesting minerals in westeros and he'd probably have a good collection of dragonglass for when the ice zombies show up at his door. he'd also provide lots of comic relief like refering to the dornians as beaners or something. i think he'd be a pretty chill dude in the GoT world.
