Game Thread W2 - New England V NY Jets (1 Viewer)

Like last week the Pats played one good half and one bad half. This game should not have been close. To the Jets credit they hung tough, kept their composure and made the Pats sweat it out. Overall I thought this would be a tough game. The Jets were 1-0 and playing at home in the underdog role with a lot of emotion.

*Brady doesn't look good. It's more than the WRs. He just doesn't look sharp right now.

*The Jets ground game isn't pretty. Blaylock is useless. Barlow ran harder than I've seen him in the past but he's a pretty ordinary RB.

*The Pats playcalling still has too many plays where nothing is accomplished.

*The Pats played a lot of 4-3 the first half and it gave the Jets a lot of problems.

*Both Dillon and Maroney had decent days but going forward they are going to be a handful. It really appears that Dillon has taken to his big brother role with Maroney. Dillon handled the goalline carries.

*Good first impression by Jax. He didn't get a ton thrown his way but looked comfortable for a rookie wideout who missed all of camp. Gabriel was a non-factor.

*Ty Warren is turning into a big time player. He's a legit run-stuffer.

*Good to see Bruschi on the field. He looked a little rusty but that's to be expected after the injury. He's the traffic cop out there and he's almost irreplacable.

*Cotchery looks like he's going to be a player. He plays with a lot of confidence.

*Some bad and inexcusable tackling by the Pats lead to some big plays by the Jets.

*It's only been two weeks but the Pats are in the driver's seat early in the AFC East. Miami's 0-2 and the Pats have division wins against Buffalo and New York. If they can go 2-1 in their next three (Denver, @Cincy, Miami) they'll be in excellent shape going into their bye week.
Pretty much agree with everything written here. Spot on analysis.I'd only add that Coles and Pennington look very, very good. Kevin Faulk is also a great role player for the Pats.

And once again, Belichick's coaching at the end of the game left me completely shuked. Looked like he was getting too cute.

Denver doesn't appear to be very good right now. At Cincinnati will be a good test to see where New England's really at. I'm very down on Miami right now, so New England may not need a winning record to take the AFC East anyway.
:lmao: :lmao: Are you predicting the Pats to win the East at 8-8? Even if you dont think the Pats are very good, have you seen their schedule? I feel 10-6 is the floor and 12-4 is pretty likely.

1. If the Patriots struggle at all, its early in the season. Most of their losses since 2001 have come early on. This is nothing new for the Patriots. Maybe its because Belichick's strength is putting his players in the best position to succeed but early in the season he doesn't have enough hard data yet to make those types of decisions. Who knows. But it happens. And so far they aren't even losing early in the season. The best test to see where the Patriots are at is november and december.

Since 2001, the Patriots are 35-8 from week 9 on. In that same time span, they are 23-14 in the first 8 weeks.

Key Play of the Game:

On 3rd down near the end of the first half, Pennington is scrambling on 3rd down. He, for some reason, runs out of bounds. essentially stopping the clock just before the Jets have to punt it away, saving a lot of time for the Patriots. The Patriots score a TD just before half-time that end up being the difference in a 24-17 game.

Major props to the Jets (read: Mangini) for maintaining discipline and having a lot of heart in the second half.

Despite Brady's sloppy throwing, the game was only close because of near super-human plays by both Cotchery and Coles. I can't say which play was better.

Next up: Plummer in Foxboro; yummmm!

That, and Ben Graham muffing that punt at the end of the first half. If he boots that 50 yards down the field instead of 10, the Pats don't get that backbreaking score to end the quarter and we might have a different outcome in this game.

What's interesting to me is that, for the second straight week, the Patriots were able to take the air out of the football on their last drive of the game.

Against the Bills, they churned out a 6+ minute drive to seal the game in the 4th quarter. Against the Jets, they held the ball for over 8 minutes, giving the Jets only a desperation drive at the end. While neither drive resulted in points, the Pats have shown that they can play keepaway while sitting on a lead. That's going to be very important later in the season.

Still, the Pats have a long way to go to be considered a very good football team...

agreed.first and foremost, Brady needs to sharpen his game. Under throwing Watson in the endzone, under throwing the bomb (into double coverage for an INT)... not to mention last weeks sub-par performance. But, that's encouraging too. Knowing that NE hasn't played particularly well but is still 2-0 and jumping out to a nice start.

The Pats need to(a) get better passing out of Brady, and(b) tackle better in the secondary.Everything else is solid.IMHO, this does not constitute "a long way to go". :bye:
Add © Cut down on penalties and stupid mistakes (like Wilforks double-brain-fart on the offsides, personal foul play)
He pushed Pennington in the chest with one hand and Pennington flopped big time. Nice acting on his part to get the call.

Question to Jet fans...How is Fireman Eddy looked upon by the faithful?
Great for the team. Some have their issues with him because of the whole West Side Stadium ordeal but I'm a season ticket holder and love the guy. He's always leading the crowd in chants of, "D-fence (bump, bump), D-fence ....." And, when it comes to the "J - E - T - S, Jets, Jets, JETS," chant he has 80,000+ hanging on his every motion. The "J - E - T - S" chant would die without him and that is partly what Jets' fans are known for. I have no problems with him.HTH.
He's alright. Has a habit for leaving preseason games early and went on "hiatus" for a few games after the West Side stadium fell through. That's his right but when people anoint him the #1 Jets fan, I snicker

I'm not saying he is the "#1 Jets fan," nor am I saying that because I'm accusing you of accusing me of saying that ;) . I just think he is good for the team and good for the noise level of the stadium. I'm forever trying to get the people around me to make noise (I have no voice at all today btw) so when he gets on the big screen screaming "Dee-fence" with veins popping out of his neck and it gets other people in my section to stand up and say it also; I appreciate it.Also, if he (and his brother, etc) was gone, who would lead the "J-E-T-S" chant? Captain Jet? (if you know who he is)

We're not at week 15, BB, Brady, or simply the Pats organization always look alot more polished by late in the season. I'd expect several teams will too.The pass D and that 3rd-4th quarter for the Jets-Cotchery catch was excellent awareness on Jerrico's part that he didn't touch the ground with his knee or elbow. I would imagine that could have happenned against any D any time. It was a sort of freak play.Coles, long catch and run. Geesh the tackling stunk on that one. It was an excellent run though. If Barry Sanders torched our run D for a 95 yard run with moves like Coles, I wouldn't have worried about em'. Let BB get on them about tackling and I'm fine with it. I'm not sure there's a ton of blame for them, I'm more inclined to say the Jets WRs made some magnificent plays. There was one short(8,9 yards?) pass Coles made shortly after that and Harrison was literally all over him while he dived and he still caught it. Again, awesome play by Coles. On that one, definitely, what more do you want the D to do. We were up handily before JC's catch and after that stuff ended we drove the ball on a long drive to waste almost all of the clock. I'm most concerned with mental breakdowns. From Brady to the Pats secondary to...they rested on their laurels as if the game was done and the Jets showed them it wasn't.It's week 2 though and we still won. Several "fix-able" problems is not uncommon in week 2.I'm still unhappy with our passing game and thoroughly impressed with out running game. IF we can have teams fear/respect our passing game a little bit wow could that O be good. The Jets backs went down so easy I couldn't believe it. I'm very happy with our D-line but it was beyond that, they just went down with the slightest touch. That was pitiful. The rook stud linemen were impressive on several pass plays and the Pats D linemen were stood up. On the run, there was no push. I'm sure the Jets(and the NFL) figure they'll get better and they're just youngsters. Jets running game has no hope if there's no holes and the back goes down so effortlessly. I'd bet Mangini is all over that. Askew (and on occasion Barlow) was the only one I saw with some fight in him. I'd put Askew in as the RB if I were him, that's how bad I thought they were yesterday. Kerry Rhodes was quite impressive. Thomas and Vilma had their moments. Mangini should be able to build a good D there pretty quickly.
