General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

Keep wanting to get into this, but cant read the damn dialogue, etc on the screen. Am i blind? Also didn't see an option to change size or font of the dialogue.

Are you on PC? If so there are some options to get a bigger font. Console, probably SOL.

I gotta stick to my guns. Other games are fine- ie Fallout, don't know why these are so hard to see. Me not playing will teach them a lesson. ;)

For anyone on PC, either Skyrim.ini or SkyrimPrefs.ini in your Games/Skyrim directory has 4 lines that control different fonts used in the game. You could either switch it to one of the other 4 that might be larger, or go look for some mods with bigger fonts. Same thing in Oblivion where I replaced the fonts with easier to read in some cases.

Maybe you could edit it if you have a hacked Xbox, but a normal one, no way to change it that I know of if there isn't an actual option in Settings.

I saw this bumped and got scared because I thought maybe they were releasing a new game.

I can't afford to miss work right now.

Been playing this since Christmas, usually no more than an hour a day, and absolutely LOVE it. I think it's the best game ever and I've been playing games since the early 1980s. I've also been slowly reading this thread since I started playing Skyrim, and it has been a wonderful companion to the game.

My character is a do-gooding, smithing, enchanting, orc-loving, erudite, merchant, tank Nord. Kitted out in legendary ebony armor with a bunch of enchantments and wielding a legendary daedric warhammer, he makes mincemeat of nearly every enemy he encounters. He never sneaks and hardly ever uses his bow or magic. He just charges in and bashes everything. He does like using his shouts, particularly the fire one.

He's also got a keen eye for gold. He'll go on a dungeon raid with Lydia, and come back piled high with looted weapons, which he'll then enchant and sell at a massive mark-up. He's pals with the orcs, and will go mine ebony in their mines and then make ebony and daedric armor and weapons. Every time he comes back from a dwarf dungeon he'll also smelt down a ton of their metal and produce armor and weapons.

My characters lives in an elegant residence in Solitude with a superb library, but often sleeps over in Whiterun, which still serves as a storage base.

He is a "good" character, hasn't done anything criminal, and I've resisted the thief quest for that reason. I think I'm pretty close to finishing the main quest and want to save it till the end. I also don't plan on doing the civil war one. I am currently doing the mage, Companions and Bards College quests. His only dark side is he is a werewolf!

I plan on developing my magic and alchemy skills and still need to learn a lot more enchantments. I can easily see myself playing this for years yet, partly because I am playing it a relatively slow pace, but really because the game is so huge and there's still so much to explore.

Thanks to everyone for their hints and tips in this thread!

My last playthrough was pretty epic. I made another lesbian dark elf but this time I had a harem of lady followers with me and most of the time we all just rode our horses from one end of skyrim to the other only stopping at our manor occasionally to bathe nude in the hot baths. I bet the Greybeards are getting pissed that I keep blowing them off.

I also have been playing since christmas. I keep getting sidetracked from the main quest because I have bad OCD gaming where I need to accomplish everything before I beat the game. Not good for this game. The one thing that bothers the hell out of me is the ridiculously long load times. It really makes me play something else if I have just 1 hour to play.

The load times are what finally made me give the game up at about 80% of the way through.

Vilja in Skyrim

If you like companions, lesbian or otherwise, and play on the PC then this is one of the best mods you can have.

Yup, she's part of the harem.
Do you have Daenerys?
Holy ####, I do now! Hope the other ladies don't get too jealous.

From the description of the mod.

To use the TBBP versions of the mod you NEED a compatible skeleton and an animation pack to see the difference. For the best effect, use HDT Breast and Butt Physics by threedeedevil. Make sure to follow his directions and get the skeleton he recommends, HTD Physics Extension, and SKSE.
"breast and butt physics" mod. If you arent playing Skyrim on PC, you arent playing it properly.

Big Bump for the Special Edition. Releases exactly 4 months from today. But who's counting?

I'm pumped as I haven't played Skyrim in a few years now. Should be a pretty different experience for us console gamers with the mods now. Who's picking it up?

day one buy here.

Eating my words a little now.  Tried it on the newer TV finally and loving it.  Now time to go through this thread as I go through the game.  Just have the base game for 360, so I am sure I will be buying the SE for the PS4 when that comes out.

I am going to restart this once the remastered version comes out. I don't even remember following this thread, but I did. Would be fun to do it all over again.

New thread?

Not IMO, this will be a huge benefit to new players and if we start a new thread I think it will be a lot of confusion.

k

just had the same issue in with Fallout awhile back. folks wanted to share their experiences and it didn't make sense to do so in the old Fallout thread so instead we got it all in the video game thread.

Just started playing this for the first time on Xbox 360 the other night.  Not much of a video game player (obviously) but it seems cool so far.  Killed two dragons so I guess that's good.

ETA: Have you played an Elder Scrolls game before, and what type/style character did you build?

After thinking about it, I am not going to bother going through the thread, as it will probably just spoil stuff or give too much info.  I think I have enough knowledge to get by even if I suck at video games.  I will post random stuff or questions as I go.  Just don't want too many spoilers/hints.

Speaking of, I do have a question:

Are there missions where you can earn a house/room, or do I have to save up and buy one?  Was thinking about splurging for the house in Whiterun last night, but blew my cash pile on a few bows, so I am starting from scratch in the coin department again tonight - I think I only have 600 left.

There are quests that unlock houses.

I'm inspired to fire this back up. I've never completed the main story (assuming it can be completed on some level).

I never really enjoyed playing a mage in this game. Not sure why. Always stuck with an archer. I will probably do that again.

I was hoping so, but seemed like I stumbled on them quicker in Fallout, so I didn't know if it was similar here.  I am lugging around too much ####, but since I don't know what to keep and dump yet, I seem to only have 50-60 lbs open as I head out on missions.  One of the main reasons I dump most of my upgrades into endurance.

If there's a third option, do you want to hear it? I assume your concern is just storing stuff.

Resist the temptation to horde. It will liberate your soul.

I figured I can have a companion to lug stuff for me, but usually don't go that route.  I think the first archer I met in the first town (can't remember the damn names of places) got killed on our first mission.  Haven't seen him since running into some bandits, but didn't see a body either.

I don't like companions, either. However, I joined the Companions (I'm re-playing this myself, just started last week) and you can dump stuff in the cabinet down in the barracks, between the beds.

I am not a horder in these games.  People talk about collecting every dish and goblet and book and #### - way too tedious for me.  However, it seems I am getting weighed down with the few weapons I have and all the potions/ingredients/tomes/books/misc stuff that I have because I don't know what to save and what to sell yet.

Wait until the remastered edition comes out for consoles and get the mod that gives you a mansion with baths complete with a harem of naked whores.

I have never played an Elder Scrolls game before (nor many other games of any kind, really).

My guy is a Nord (?)  I think it's just the default character you get when you start the game, I read the descriptions of some of the other characters I could've picked but figured I'd start basic.  I mostly fight with a sword or an axe in one hand, and shoot fire out of the other hand because why not?  Last night I was experimenting a bit with being more sneaky and trying to shoot stuff with arrows instead but mostly I just barge in swinging.

I've completed a few missions and killed two dragons so far.  I had a companion, some lady, but she died in a cave somewhere not long after joining me.  I'm mostly just following the main missions I guess, although I did explore some caves that I stumbled across.  Seems like I can choose different paths (like which "group" to join or ally with?)  Haven't made any choices like that yet, I don't think.

I have a major issue with hoarding stuff, mostly because I just don't know what's good/useful and what isn't.  I'm pretty much always around max capacity, and if I find something else I really want I have to drop something else to make room for it.  At first I was collecting a #### ton of books, thought they might be important, but then I had so many I just dumped them all in a field somewhere.  Should I read those or are they just kind of like "bonus materials"?

For the new players, for the love of Talos (that was smooth wasn't it?), SAVE OFTEN. Like every 15 minutes, every time before you enter a dungeon/cave. And keeps a rotation of at least 10 different save files.

Still plenty of glitches to go around in this game, some as I found out in Dead Man's Respite, that can permanently trap you in the dungeon if you don't have a save file from before you entered.

I would just store stuff in the barrels near the blacksmith in Whiterun.  You're there enough that they won't disappear.

Alchemy is an easy way to make money, so I keep one barrel for ingredients and one for weapons and armor.

Oh yeah, that's pretty frustrating - I keep forgetting to save, and I'll get halfway through a cave and get jumped by a frosty spider or something, and have to start all the way from the beginning again.  Once I was walking a long-ish distance to get to the next mission, and like 80% of the way there (without thinking to save along the way) I got mauled by a bear.  Had to start all over.  Almost quit the game forever but I'm sticking with it for now. :)
