General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (2 Viewers)

Not my type of game but Skyrim has been acquired. Figure new monitor deserves a new game. GOing to nerd it up tomorrow
Didn't think Skryim was my type of game either. Be prepared to lose all your free time!
was up til way-too-late o'clock last night b/c Lydia got killed by a Dragon and I had to move all her stuff to my house before i forgot where she was. Then i had to go find Berum and make sure he was following me now that Lydia was gone (tips 40) :nerd: now i'm all

I use a magey guy. For bosses, he'd rather have a 30-second breather with Ice Form than to knock down their armor or whatever it is that Marked for Death does.
I can see that. Different shouts for different classes, as it should be. I could see where the one that makes you invunerable to damage would be useful for a cornered mage and whatnot too. For archers or melee characters though, Marked for Death is money. Unless of course you are working on your archery skill. Then maybe plinking away at a dragon for 10 minutes with iron arrows might be the way to go!

Tip: If you want to find more shouts. Shout in a city and you'll get a letter delivered from a "friend" telling you where to find one.
Thanks for this tip. I never really put two and two together. I guess that's mainly because, the only time I have ever used a shout in town was when I accidently fired it off when I meant to sprint. It doesn't go over well in Dragon's Reach (i.e. reload required). And Unrelenting Force right in to a Guard's face doesn't make you popular either (he went adversary red dot on me). But now I know, so I'll find a nice empty area now and again and just blast one off. I do like the word wall quests. They seem like some of the more fun type of missions.

I was pretty excited to enchant my dwarven boots with sneak. But since the rest of my armor is orcish, I look like I'm wearing Uggs with armor. <_<

What item did you destroy to get the sneak enchantment?
I had some hide boots of major sneaking. They never really made sense with the rest of my heavy armor, but sneak/arrow is how I usually soften up (or even kill) foes. Once sneak got up to 75 and enchanting up to 50, decided it was time to upgrade.

Is there some kind of spell an enemy can cast on you that steals/removes an item from your inventory? Last night in a dungeon crawl I had 2 separate unequipped weapons (my primary bow and a dagger) disappear from my inventory (neither were equipped when they came up missing) after getting hit with some icy looking spell effect. My only thoughts were that something pickpocketed me (not likely since drougr's probably aren't doing that), it was the spell or that i somehow managed to drop weapons twice in 5 minutes while trying to swap them out after having never done that previously in the game...

How do I get my pickpocketing up? I am so worried about getting caught that I dont even try. It seems like the best chance I ever have is about 52%.
Just save before you try to pick somebody's pocket. Reload if you fail. You should be getting some items that augment pickpocketing through the Thieves Guild, so obviously wear those too. Also, almost everybody in the game walks around with a necklace or ring or something of value. Try pickpocketing those things as opposed to carrots and lockpicks. You'll level up faster if you're pickpocketing higher-value items. At low levels, pickpocketing gold rings can gain you a level each time. This skill levels up extremely fast.

Disarm will knock a weapon out of your hands but it will be somewhere on the ground, so you can look for it and pick it back up, though usually not until after the battle is over. Unless you are strong enough to let the enemy wail on you while you search. Not sure if there is a stronger spell that actually destroys a weapon.

stupid drouger. when I come back I'll bring lydia and hack him in the back with 2 of the 40 iron daggers I'm carrying around

I too only have the Unrelenting Force shout, though I have a few dragon souls absorbed and unused. WHat do you guys mean when you say you only have some of the words? Are some of the shouts found with more than one piece in different places?

Try some magic. He cant unequip that

Can you finish this game without use of these dragon shouts or whatever they are?

I'm a tank build, and I have used no magic or anything of the sort thats not "realistic" thus far. Can I complete the game?

I did use the shout once accidentally in some town. That didn't go over so well with the locals.

Yeah most of the shouts are broken up over multiple locations before you get all three words.

the only damage spell I have is the fireball thing I started with.

Went through a huge dungeon last night (Foresthost or something). This was the first dungeon in quite a while that was actually pretty challenging. Deathlord dudes left and right. Got a mask out of the deal, but the best part was the shout/word. It calls down lightning from the sky and hits everything around. Going to be testing that out in whiterun tonight.

Each shout has 3 different levels to it, in the form of 3 different words that the character says when using the shout. When you first find a given shout, like Ice Form, you get the first word. The character says it when you use it.When you find a second spot that will give you Ice Form, you learn the 2nd word. If you hold down the button longer he will cast it by saying both words and it will have a stronger effect. When you find the third location, you get the third word. The order you find them doesn't matter, the first place you find gives you the first word, the second place you find gives you the second word, etc.If you go into your Shouts menu off the magick menu and select one of the shouts, you'll see the additional words there but greyed out since you haven't found them and unlocked them with a soul yet.

Oh yeah, that shout is awesome. Use it on dragons right as they are about to take off and watch it finish them off while they fly around, even if they have a lot of health left. Get ready for a lot of #####ing and moaning from your armored companions, though, as they will take a beating from teh lightning as well.

Wait one second, you have to hold the button longer in order to use the more powerful version of the shout? :bag: Level 20 with numerous shouts and I had no clue.

At least you have numerous shouts. I have spent most of my playtime trying to go see the Greybeards and continually being distracted by every single cave, mine, or fort I come across and I still haven't gotten any shouts haha.

Am I the only one with way more shouts than dragon souls? I think I have found 12 or so different shouts but have only learned about half.

Level 47 and only tap it when I even remember I have shouts. :bag: :bag: Thanks for the heads up GR. Maybe disarm will actually work now.

Also I found breakin in and pickpocketing while they sleep helped in the early levels. Careful of jewelry, I'm not positive but I have a theory if they are wearing it they catch you easier.

Through dumb luck, I got all 3 levels of the ice form one really early. I can freeze a guy and then use him as table for my lunch, take a nap, sort my potions (I wish) and he'll still be frozen.

Is there a way to stop aiming with my bow and let my draw out without firing the arrow? I shoot them into the ground all the time or accidentally shoot a good person because I can't seem to just put the damn arrow away.

I am having trouble with combat. I am not sure if its just because I am old and havent got the same dexterity as when I was young, if my gear just sucks or if my tactics are bad.

I use a bow for sniping. My bow is a basic Dwarven bow with 20 damage. I am using basic Dwarven arrows which do 14 damage.

I dont have the 6x perk, which I think is one of my problems. It seems like when guys get one me it takes forever to kill them and I die pretty regularly. I havent put any perks into the one-hand or 2-hand because I havent researched enough to find out what is worth it.

What are some strategies you guys are employing? What types of weapons? How much magic should I mix in?

Forget dragons, they eat my lunch....but that probably has to do with tactics.

Use the "sheath" button which you use to put away everything else. On the PS3, I think it's the square IIRC.
You do. It is indeed the square.

Glad it helps. I didn't realize it either until the Greybeards. When you first go to them and do their first test, if you only used the first word they mention you aren't doing it right and have to hold your breath longer or something like that, was how I figured it out.

When I was lower level, I would snipe with the bow initially. Then once the enemy closed, I would switch to weapon and shield. I would shield bash to knock them back and get them off balance, the hit them with my weapon. If I got low on health, you either need to run away and cast some sort of restoration, or go to inventory and quaff down some health potions. As for Dragons, you don't need to skip them. But you need to fight them where you can escape their attacks. An empty tower for instance. Go inside, pop in to the doorway and hit them with a few bow shots, duck back inside when the go to attack. If they hit you, heal while inside. You definitely cannot be taking them on directly early in the game.

Jack of all trades master of none. Pick a discipline and stick with it. Are you going to be a archer type? A sneak/dagger killer? Sword and shield? Two handed tank? IMO it's best to decide on one main tactical approach and then supplement it with another discipline.Don't worry about "picking the wrong thing" because there is no such thing. If you don't like how a character is working then start up a new one. I'm probably on my 4th or 5th iteration. I had a Redguard that was an assassin/thief that specialized in thwacking people with arrows. I got pretty far along and I scrapped her and now have a destruction/conjuration mage. It's fun to try different things.

For those needing dragon souls, remeber, some dragons regenerate daily. Shearpoint, a quest I got right off the bat in Whiterun, is one such location. Low level dragon. You can travel back and fight every day or two and bank a dragon soul. Doing so should alleviate any shortages.

Very good post.I think one way to get more out of the game is to stick with one type of combat so you can replay again as something else and it will be new. I'm playing as a mage, and I'm not even going to do the Thieves GUild or Dark Brotherhood quest lines, so I can do those as a sneaky backstabber/archer. Also will probably try a two-handed tank or sword and shield at some point. I'm also leaving a few cities as unexplored as I can so I can focus on them in future characters.

i think you gotta choose a hand combat tree for close encounters, at least get the first couple of levels of your favorite weapon type. two hand is way more powerful but less block, 1 hand has dual wield, shields, and can cast magic. I also improved my smithing early by making iron daggers until I was up to 100. 100 Smithing lets you make the best weapons and armors which help alot. Try to improve your sneak, sneak + bow is a good combo, sneak everywhere, when you going shopping, mowing the lawn, etc. Basically just keep playing, haha, if you cant kill something, come back for it later when you've built up. In the beginning, If I was on my own I ran from dragons to the nearest town so I could get help.I dont have too much magic but did make sure to get restoration.

Although one thing for him to remember is that if he does this, a lot of the excitement from dungeon-diving will be gone since no weapon will be better than what he crafts himself.
Unless he find enchanted weapons, which is what I tend to find a lot of now, not too mention that he will be able to sell them and make some decent coin.
