General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

For PC users, this helped my performance out a ton:http://www.gamefront.com/how-to-improve-skyrim-with-ini-file-tweaks/
Has this article changed since you read it? There's nothing there that would improve performance. There are two tweaks that will decrease performance, though.Or are you talking about the mouse tweaks?

Loving archery in this one. Could never build a good Elder Scrolls ranged character before. But my Bosmer Stealth Archer is a freaking sniper. I cleaned out one grotto (and two associated quests) with just ranged sneak attacks from shadows. Awesome.

And when stuff spots me in the wilderness, I can usually run not too far and get to a vantage point that they can't reach and start sniping from there. Archery roolz.

Not sure how useful it will be in the prison mine where I just got tossed, though.
This is what I've been doing. But I also just got the Assassin perk in the Sneak constellation. X15 damage for dagger sneak attacks. I crafted an exquisite Elven dagger (21 dmg) and a Superior Dwarven dagger (18 dmg) and plan on double wielding them (already have the perk). If I can get close enough, I bet I could kill a dragon in a single power strike from behind. Not that I could sneak up on a dragon, but you know.

I think I'll enchant one with Soul Capture to keep them charged.

And yet, despite this awesomeness, I still have not met the Dark Brotherhood.

NO, I don't want a spoiler to find out how. I like stumbling through the world wondering where they are.
I can not figure out how to fill my souls gems. I thought it would be the same as oblivion (soul traps) but I cant figure out how to do it. Help please...
Buy empty soul gems. Cast 'soul capture' (or whatever it's called) on an enemy just before they die. If you kill him in the allotted time, you will capture their soul. It's the exact same as Oblivion.
Does every one have this spell?
Early on in the main quest the Jarl gives you the Axe of Whiterun (maybe right after killing the dragon? The axe is enchanted with soul capture. I haven't seen or bought the spell yet.
I sold that as soon as I got it. I sure hope there is a better way. I also didnt know you could disenchant items :( I need the book for this game.

Seek out any mages in the game. Most Jarl courts have one hanging around. They have spell books to sell. Reading the book gives you the spell.

Loving the stealth gameplay in Skyrim. The instant-kill assassination animations are great. Dual-wielding is super fun. I'm level 17 and still haven't found a decent dagger though.
was just going to ask about this. Might have to cheat and find one in the manual.I want to roll with duel wielded daggers. Poisoned.

:nerd:
That's what I've been using - 2x Frostbite Venom coated daggers. Kills most stuff before they even see me but having a hard time getting mobbed when I can't sneak up on everything.

Oh, sorry, just the mouse tweaks. My mouse was super unresponsive and laggy.

how deep into the perk tree do you have to go to duel wield?

It's not that far up. 30 or 40 skill needed?

Dragon scales and bones are weighing me down like crazy. Is there any benefit to keeping these or should I just sell? Don't have the money for a house to store them

I think you can equip two weapons (or spells, or one of both) right out of the gate - but dual-wielding weapons is gimped until you get some perks (I think the first is at one-handed level 30).Be prepared to get hit a lot.

I've heard you can store stuff in guild houses that you belong to but I haven't confirmed this myself.Scales & bones are used as smithing materials but you need 100 in smithing to use them. I'm not too far in but from what I've heard, once you're at the point that you're at 100 in smithing, you'll have access to more.

I think I am going to start over tonight.
What kind of character did you make your first try? I'm loving my two-handed, heavy armor Orc.
Im an Imperial. I use magic and fight with a sword. I will probably stick with this type of build since Im enjoying it. I just feel like I missed too much and now have an idea of what to do so it may be more fluid for me. The only thing I will hate to do again is
Defeat the boss at the end of the tunnel with the tiger claw. It took me a good hour to beat him. But I didnt know how to sprint the first time I took him on

with the save setup, can you now create and save multiple characters? if I click "new", can I still load the old character saves?

The Jarl's mage (that you give the dragonstone to) has it for sale.

I am desperately looking for a dead body that I found when I first started the game and can't find when I restarted. Please help!!!

There is a dead Nordic treasure hunter that has a note on his person. His body was somewhere around Riverwood, between the intro town (Helgard?) and Riverwood. I can't find him and it's driving me nuts. I found the first treasure MAP but not this guy again. If you know where/what I'm talking about either respond or PM me, please?
Still can't find this mother...anyone help here?

Long time fan, having played Daggerfall-on... I feel this game has really come close to what they were intending all along - just play, and don't realy worry about the numbers/etc. They also made just about everything viable. Dual wield or a fighter/mage is often "automatically" overpowered in games, but not here. If you want to do that and not have a shield, you'd better have some kind of plan for getting mobbed, be it a defensive spell, run away, etc. But if you figure out how to handle that, you can be very deadly.

They finally made it more about playstyle than numbers/character build, if you know what I mean.

So a big part of this thread was complaining about Oblivions leveling system.

Can you guys give your impressions of how Skyrims leveling system is working for you and how does it compare to Oblivions?

The leveling is more like Fallout 3. As in certain areas have more difficult creatures but they will still level up with you to an extent.

Your skills just level up as you play. Cast destruction spells and your destruction skill will level up. Block with your shield and your blocking skill will level up. Fight with a one-handed weapon and your one-handed weapon skill will level up. Each time your character levels up you choose to put a point in one of magic/health/stamina and you get a perk. Use your perks in your skill trees to further power up a particular set of skills. The skill trees have pre-requisites and level requirements (skill level not character level).Pretty simple and seems to work well so far, though I am a very low level.

Far more simple and intuitive, and not having enemies scaled to your level really makes the world more believable. (not being able to walk up to three mammoths and a giant and have any sort of hope of killing them as a low level player adds significantly to the "realism" IMO)

Getting rid of things like speed and athletics has made a huge difference. No more "accidential fast leveling" because you ran and/or jumped. Now your leveling is more controlled by what you actually do in terms of playing. So when you level, it's because you raised useful skills.

I enjoy sniping in games. Has anyone built an archer that can snipe? I had heard there was skills/perks that would allow one to build a part of your character as a sniper.

So is a soul gem the only way to recharge items? I never bothered with them in Oblivian and just went to a mage and had them recharge my items so this will kind of suck for me if that is the only way to do it.

ETA: I am level 11 and haven't yet found anyone that will recharge my items. About the only mage I have found has been a court mage

Making the hike up to High Hrothgar was visually stunning. Friggin frost wolves killed my horse along the way, but the experience as a whole was fantastic.
Yeah, that was cool. I got smoked the first time I went up there. Stupid townspeople telling me there's only a couple of wolves up there.

:goodposting: "You might enounter a few wolves, but nothing you can't handle." One Frostbite Spider, one Snowy Sabertooth, one Ice Wolf (like, Super-Wolf), and one Ice Troll later, I'm finally there. Bastages.

Yeah, I just ran away from the Ice Troll....the second time, the first time I got it handed to me.

I've sort of gone down this path, though not that far -- my archery skill is only a little over 30 so far. Still, I can one-shot weaker enemies with sneak attacks, and I at least do decent damage against stronger opponents. My strategy is to start off with a sneak attack with my bow, and then either use destruction magic to finish off my opponent, or run away like a little girl, hide, and then go for another sneak attack. I need to try Conjuration. That was a lot of fun in Oblivion and I sort of forgot about it so far in this game.

Another leveling question

When you raise a skill, what affect does it have outside of pushing you closer to leveling up?

For example, assume I was using a one handed weapon and my one handed skill was at 30. Would the affectiveness of that same weapon be better once I got my one handed skill up to 35?

couple of minor annoyances:

- directional sound during conversations. If you turn your head in the slightest when someone is talking to you, the volume goes so low you can barely hear the speaker. Also, conversation "clutter". As an example, you are walking with a character and pass by two other NPC's that are talking. As you pass by you get their full conversation at the same time the guy you are with is talking.

- waypoints/quest markers: at times these seem to get screwed up. maybe it is just a bug or it was me, but many times I couldn't which direction I needed to go. I would leave the city and the marker would show up on the city. I would reenter the city and the marker would be on the door to leave the city.

- I don't like the light/dark business. I might need to turn the gamma up, but often it was just too dark. You'd walk past a brazier it would then be pitch black.

How does this work in dungeons/caves?

The conversational clutter is my only real annoyance so far. And sometimes even in the same conversation people will talk over each other.eta - actually, I've had some annoying lag/slowdown a few times when I try to access the menu via the B button and it won't let me choose anything
