Are you sure you're playing Skyrim?
Yes on PC.
You'll get used to it. What class are you playing? I play a Mage, and I pretty much leaned on Lydia for the first 5 levels or so while I got the hang of it.
Thief. Seems most people are playing ranged/spell instead of melee. Maybe that's where I screwed up.
I think most of the people that went Thief went pretty heavily into archery in the beginning.

I m playing one handed melee with destruction magic thrown in. However I have put some development into archery because you have to really and of course restoration.
How do melee players battle dragons? Don't they only land after taking damage? Without a bow, man, it would be tough. Trying to hit a dragon with puny beginner spells just so you can get them to land so you can go melee on them.

they land pretty quick when not holding ranged weapons

I'm not very far along in the Main Quest either, so I don't know that it has anything to do with it. By 49, though, you should have more money than you know what to do with. I'm well over six figures and not even taking half the plunder anymore unless it's big Septims.
I don't think your main quest progress has anything to do with it. My character put the main quest on hold after killing the first dragon and didn't continue it until he was past lvl 60. Still found a banish item pretty early on.
I think it's completely random.I'm not far along in the quest and bought my item in Whiterun at around level 20.
Behind the scenes, the game developers store level lists of what items can appear on a merchant, in a chest, etc, based on what level you are. While they probably could tie something to quest progress if they really wanted to, the same level lists have been used in the last few Elder Scrolls releases, so I doubt it works differently in Skyrim.

I haven't done much melee in Skyrim yet. But in past games, you would normally get yourself into a pattern. Let them hit your shield or your blocking weapon, and then counter attack once or twice while they are staggered. Repeat. You can also move back to dodge a swing, and you can step in to bait a swing, move back, then dart back in for a quick hit before you retreat again.Just clicking like mad isn't a good way to do it. Learn the maneuvers you can do and time them so you hit them but are out of the way by the time they counterattack.

Well it's not just dragons. They will land and give a melee player a shot. Of course I'd rather pin cushion them a bit first. But I don't see how you could do the Forbidden Knowledge line without something ranged. Either spells or arrows. And there have been more than a few other instances where ranged attack is the best answer.

Completed Fellglow Keep. Pretty intense but not overly hard. Lots of folks to kill. And some good goodies. Interesting choice of victims they were using. I kept killing the wolf familiar of the guy who stole the books. You know the fight is on and here is this electrified wolf headed straight at you. You kill it. It's practically reflex at this point when it comes to wolves. He got a little huffy but I let him live. Then I fast travel back to the College and end up killing my third dragon there. Seems to be a hot spot. Fun to do there though because the assortment of magic used is fairly impressive and makes dragons easy prey.

Got a free dragon soul... As soon as I come out of a mine I see a dragon is on the ground and starting to burn.

I was referring more to the first 50 or 60 hours of gameplay. You are quite a ways down the road before this becomes an option.

gotta admit im starting to get bored of this at level 29. might just finish up dark brotherhood and main quest and move ontp other games. starting with a new character is not something im interested in doing. regardless, im so glad i bought this game. put in 50 hours into it and habe had a blast playing.
I'm sure it's different for everyone, but one of the things I'm loving about this game is the ability to switch gears. Like you, I have had bouts where I got bored and felt it was getting repetitious. In most games that would mean it was time to put it away or finish the final stages and call it a game. But in Skyrim, there's so much breadth that I've been able to just shift gears. When I started feeling tired of leveling and doing radiant quests, I went and did some of the Main Quest. When that got tiresome, I went to the Thieves Guild. Now I'm back to just cleaning up some miscellaneous quests and finding more Power Words before I jump back into the main stuff.

So I am approaching level 30 and have quite a few questions:

Daedra: Is this a whole sideline of quests? Does completing them give one daedra hearts that can be used to make weapons/armor?

Armor: I'm rocking light but only up to about 130 at best. Is this something I need to concentrate on improving? Is it better to go ahead and commit to smithing, or better to find/buy?

Weapons: Currently using a blades sword, but thinking it would be nice to get something really badass that is a two-handed blade. Any sidequests that give really good weapons?

Loot: Frankly I am really disappointed in the quality of the loot I'm finding. Are people finding all kinds of good stuff that I am missing, or just enchanting and smithing their own?

Spells: My two best destruction are Ice Storm and Fireball. Should I be focusing on leveling up the perks in destruction or getting more powerful spells?

Shouts: Opinions on going out and gaining as many as possible via fast travel or acquiring them naturally by completing quests?

Agree with this. I've avoided the side quests so far for the most part, but switch between the main quest, the Mages Guild quest, alchemy sessions and just
to see what I come across. Now, at level 25, I've been gathering crap for a big enchantment session. And I haven't really even started smithing yet. Can't imagine getting too bored since you can switch it up like that.

I couldn't imagine it either at level 25. But that was 30 levels ago. I did most everything Jason described. Most recently, I had been concentrating on trying to collect all the words of power I could get. But it is starting to get a bit stale, so I began knocking out the main quest. The one thing that had really kept me going was getting all the smithing and enchanting skills and perks that I wanted so I could make my (to me) uber armor and weapon set. Once I had accomplished that, now it all seems to have lost some of it's luster. So I think it comes down to, at this point, I've done all I wanted to do. Now that isn't to say I have done everythig in the game. I have not touched the Dark Brotherhood. And I have left many towns as untouched as I could outside of going there when I had too. This is deliberate, as I want to make sure I have plenty of new content if I do a round two. But for my super sneaky archer type guy, I think it's time to wrap it up.

So I am approaching level 30 and have quite a few questions:

Daedra: Is this a whole sideline of quests? Does completing them give one daedra hearts that can be used to make weapons/armor?

Most of the Daedric quests are optional, but you will likely stumble onto a few simply as you travel around and dungeon dive. Daedra hearts can be found randomly in places but you will need them to forge Daedric armor, if you want to make some.

Armor: I'm rocking light but only up to about 130 at best. Is this something I need to concentrate on improving? Is it better to go ahead and commit to smithing, or better to find/buy?

You pretty much have to commit to an armor path if you want to eventually have the best stuff...with light going through the glass into dragonscale while heavy goes from ebony to Daedric to Dragonplate. You really won't have enough perks to upgrade both sides without really hurting your other ability tree progression. To that end, if you're heading along the light side, Daedra hearts won't matter much for you. I would definitely commit to smithing, because it's really easy to create and upgrade armor and weapons.

Weapons: Currently using a blades sword, but thinking it would be nice to get something really badass that is a two-handed blade. Any sidequests that give really good weapons?

Another consideration is how you level fighting. You can certainly use both two and one-handed weapons, but again it'll make it harder for you to maximize your perks trees. It's very easy to get better weaponry, as it will be dropped on quests, in trunks, and of course you can buy stuff from merchants and steal stuff. Most types of goods level with you, so you'll start seeing better stuff everywhere as you level up. I routinely find ebony and glass armor and weapons now, and when you get to Level 50 even Dragon Plate and Dragonscale start appearing at times.

Loot: Frankly I am really disappointed in the quality of the loot I'm finding. Are people finding all kinds of good stuff that I am missing, or just enchanting and smithing their own?

Are you pickpocketing, lockpicking and stealing? I found that to be the easiest way to get really good stuff quickly, but not the only way. As I said in the prior comment, the loot you find levels with you.

Spells: My two best destruction are Ice Storm and Fireball. Should I be focusing on leveling up the perks in destruction or getting more powerful spells?

This is entirely up to you, but as with all things, if you opt to be a jack of all trades, you're going to be a master of none. I eschewed magic almost entirely so I could focus on my thief, alchemy/smithing and one-handed/archery trees. There wasn't enough room to add a magic tree or two, as well. Now that said, I do still level them, particularly when I come across a trainer. It's cheap to train with people until you're Level 50, so I routinely train five times (the max per level) with any trainer I'm not high on, and pickpocket my gold back between training sessions so it ends up being free.

Shouts: Opinions on going out and gaining as many as possible via fast travel or acquiring them naturally by completing quests?

As with most things Skyrim, this is entirely up to you. There are certain shouts you will learn as part of the main quest, but all the rest are optional. I've stumbled onto a bunch, sought out a few others, and to be honest, I primarily use Unrelenting Force most of the time. But I may find more use for them as I get toward the later stages of the Main Quest. Shouts, Dragon Priest Masks, Guild Paths, are all optional really -- but add lots of hours of entertainment if you want them to.

I don't think you'll ever come across as good of weapons and armor as you can make yourself if you max out the blacksmithing and enchanting trees. That isn't to say you HAVE to do this though. I imagine you can accumulate enough "good stuff" to finish the game just fine. I love the Nightengale weapons for instance. But to get to where your armor rating is maxed out over the cap and with super death dealing weapons, you are going to have to make those.Edit to add: As Jason said, Unrelenting Force is good and can be VERY amusing by the time you have all three words. It's awesome to send a group of bandits flinging over the edge of a cliff. Good times!

Absolutely. You don't HAVE to have maxed out stats to complete the game. But if you WANT to get the most powerful stuff you pretty much have to smith and max out alchemy/enchanting too, because most of the enchantments stack.

Yep, it's what I did. The second playthrough though, if there is one, I intend to use what I can find in game and avoid blacksmithing and enchanting as much as I feel I can without cripling myself. I think playing a melee character, and using only what is available in game, should make for a much more challenging experience. It should also keep me from out-leveling my battle skills as you can easily do by smithing and enchanting!

I intended to be a melee character, but evolved into an archer almost exclusively. I still have a sweet Daedric sword (Ebony prior to that) with Soul Trap on it (upgraded to Legendary) but it's just for specific situations when I'm in tight quarters and need to hack away.

A question for those who finished the main quest -

Have you found any benefit to using the Elder Scroll again? It just sits there in your inventory. You can read it and get blinded, but does it do anything else or is it just another useless item? It's an effing Elder Scroll! It should so something. Slow time. Making you temporarily invincible. Evoke orgasm. Something...
Sold it to the library guy at the College of Winterhold. Got 2k for it I think.

I even made my own sword just for the rare occasion I had to fight toe to toe. I named it Glass Sword of Punishment. It rocks, and I still rarely use it just because my dude is an archer. I'm more likely to break out the dagger and sneak up and slit a throat, but even that cut scene is getting stale. They need more variance for the dagger weilders, especially when they put a 15x damage perk in the game!

I just got that perk and have the Dark Brotherhood gloves that double backstab damage. hitting a 30x backstab is pretty fun, and I've started trying to pull this off rather than my normal sniping strategy wherever its possible.

working on my new dual wield mage character now, been concentrating on only attack and armor oriented upgrades and depending on stuff I find and or buy for enchantments, etc so far. as much as I loved my earlier two hand character, I'm enjoying the dual sword attacks more, power attacks unleash these kung fu like slashing moves, its awesome.

This is what I am doing at the moment on my second play through. No smithing or enchanting at all. I just switched to some glass armor I found, before that I have been using the nightengale armor. Doing a sneaky/archer/distruction magic guy and am actually having much more fun then the first time through using a tank and smithing the crap out of everything I owned till it was all legendary.

I've been using Fire Bolt until they land, but would think using Ice destruction spells to drain their stamina would get them grounded, haven't tried it yet since I don't have the spell yet. My old character I would use a Stamina bow to tire them out, then take them out with melee when they had no energy to fly.

I'm an old school AD&D purist, so I've actually played up to level 52 without intentionally improving any of the spell skills. I've had to cast a couple spells to do some of the College of Winterhold quests, and I've found books that increase spell skills, but otherwise I've avoided casting spells. I've stuck to the rogue/alchemist line, along with maxing out enchanting and smithing. Carrying around all the health and stamina potions can be a #####, but since I put all points into health and stamina, it really hasn't been an issue for a long time.

My current toon wouldn't be caught dead hanging out in anything that wasn't legendary! Heck, even his socks are legendary.

Finally found a banished bow in Whiterun for $6,600 and this time I had the money!

I'm lever 31 and about to do the Shrine of Boethiah and then after that I'm going to sneak into this party for the main quest. Both sound interesting!

I think I may have like 50,000 ingrediants as well so I'm going to go all meth-lab experiment soon...should be fun!

It will pay for itself many times over.

SoB is the only quest I purposely did not finish.
My character wasn't a murderer, so I just couldn't bring myself to intentionally kill someone just to gain favor with a Daedra.
As for the party, I'm pretty sure I botched that one miserably.

I think I was supposed to sneak around and find the evidence. But the map indicator took me to a door that led outside, I was spotted, ended up killing every guard in site, then went back in and found the papers. Totally out of character for my sneaky thief character. Luckily I was so strong by that point in the game that it was an easy bloodbath. I should have redone that though the way it was intended. It ruined the flow of that part of game for me.

Had a question. Black soul gems operate like all other soul gems right? One and done? Found my first one in Fellsglow and thought I'd ask. Also how powerful are human souls? More powerful than grand?

Yes, one and done. The human souls you trap tend to be more powerful, as the humans you usually kill are stronger than your average cave bear or troll. If you did nothing but murder guards and hunters, it wouldn't matter. But you usually trap high level necromancers and the such, giving "Great" and "Grand" souls.
This is why the Black Star option of Asura's Star is much better.

Last night I did two quests that I didnt do in my first run thru. There is so much in this game that is is crazy. I am trying to do different things and am kind of happy that all I did last time was the College of Wintehold and the main story line.

I find myself being lazy though this time. I am not sneaking as much and not leveling as quickly since now I know, all I have to do is summon my antioch and keep Lydia alive and Im straight.

Moving on to Riften and the Thieves guild tonight since I was rudely cut off from my quests with them last time. Also checking in with the pastor to get married. I think Im also going to take a horse ride to every capital just because I want to see it all. This game is great

Maybe Ill do a smithing/enchanting session to level up real quick. Im not worried about the game getting harder. In fact I welcome it

The only thing I am not looking forward to is going back in that stupid crystal ball and beating that guy and his dremoras again. Speaking of, I need to drink and blackout with that guy so I can get the Dremora staff.

Going for that soon.

I had Meeko (the dog) as a follower for a while early on, and he did so well I retired him and had him just chillin in my house for a while. Last night I went in and he wasn't there. He was nowhere to be found. Where did my little doggy go?

Yeah Meeko has taken off on me as well.

maybe if he is left alone for too long, he goes back to his original shack where you found him?

Thats what I am thinking. Gonna have to go look next time I play.Last night I told Uthgard the Unbroken (or whatever her name is) to go home. She was an able follower, and saved me quite a few times. But I wanted that Mjoll chick to be my follower, so I asked her to join me. Shes better looking too. Hope I made a wise decision. She only followed me after I did the quest to get her sword back. That quest was a pia. Fun, but took me a while.

smith a lost dog sign

I don't tend to like followers when I play. Is it possible to play the game with no followers?
I did this with my first character. He's an archer/assassin type who sneaked everywhere. Followers only cramped his style.
In the early going Lydia has come in handy more than once. I like the follower deal and am getting ready to upgrade as I feel we are getting in over poor Lydia's head the further along I get.

I used a follwer early on, mostly because of their ability to carry stuff. It was key early on when dungeon diving to haul the stash back. Once I built my character up enough, I dismissed mine and haven't used one since. They were just to likely to take off in the middle of a battle and trigger fights that I didn't want triggered, to step in front of my sniping arrow, steal the kill I had worked on to fill a soul gem, etc and so on. Now, is it possible to not use one from the very beginning? That would be tough I think due to the weak nature of your character. And I think you'd find yourself leaving a lot of things behind that you don't want to. Or crawling along trying to walk your overly laiden rear end back to town. I think if you are willing to die and reload a lot, and leave treasure behind or make several trips to get it back to town, you could do it. Just not sure how much "fun" it mght be.

Barbas is a PIA. Barks all the time. Had to tell him to piss off.

On Breaking of Dawn quest right now. Quest is pretty cool and I have no idea what those things in her temple are but I am glad my son wasn't in the room. Those things were creepy.

I was up til past midnight playing and all I want to do is fire it up and finish that quest.

ETA: I am in the market for a follower. Who is the best one?

I am over 170 hours in with my first playthrough. Hig Elf Destruction(master)Mage.

Level 42

I have completed the College of Winterhold main quest line (still some radient quests to do) and I have just about finished the Thieves Guild questline except I am holding on to this Skelton key till I loot and steal till my heart is content. I am still doing all the side jobs to bring the Guild back to it's former glory.

As far as the main quest I have taken a break after finding the Elder Scroll. I want to move on to the Dark Brotherhood as soon as all the side jobs are done for the Thieves Guild.

Amazing how I have evolved from a pure destruction mage to a bad ### thief and soon to be hit man. I have the nightengale set up and I love it. I switch betwen that my expert robes and my elven armor depending on my situation and quest. I also have really leveled up my Restoration and Conjuration. Illusion is used as well.

I am married with 2 homes (Whiterun and Solitude) as well as the Arch Mage quarters at the College.

This game is almost never ending.

I am however taking an extended break as I am really getting frustrated with the PS3 issues of freezing every 40-50 minutes. It is a major pain in the ### and hopefully patch 1.4 will take care of this issue when it drops soon.

Mass Effect 2 and Batman AC are now taking up my time for the next month or so then back to Skyrim.

A masterpiece of a a game for sure.

Are you ranged or close combat?

Not only that, but he always pushed me when I was standing still. Frustrating when you're tyring to focus on something to pick it up or sneak around and you're slowing moving in one direction because fleadick can't get out of your face.
