General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (2 Viewers)

Final side note for now. My High Elf Mage is my first character and I think it's been a fun choice. Glad I went this way.

Grimserver. I retrieved it for someone, but now I have no prompt to return it to anyone, and I can't drop it bc it's a quest item.

Help.

Is it selected as an active Quest in the Quests tab? If not Foos is correct, head to Riften. You're looking for a blonde nord.

Thanks. I activated every quest, read all the prompts, and I didn't see anything that clued me in on whom I was supposed to return it to. Though I have like 35 open quests so that might be part of it. :bag:

For those that care, I didn't lose too much in my freeze. Only had to beat one room to get back to where I was.

Started my first new guy last night and I'm loving it so far.

My only question right now is how do you end up going with someone else in the beginning of the game? I still ended up in Riverwood. I thought you could do something different in the beginning if you went with someone else.

No matter which of the two you follow, you end up in Riverwood.

It's better to follow the Imperial though, because you get hooked up with the smith.

just made a daedric war hammer enchanted with absorb health and absorb stamina, paired with the stamina ring of renewal means nonstop power swingings on ancient dragons

How do you chose to follow anyone? It seems like you have to follow the same guy.

After the dragon attacks, you follow the imperial. Shortly later, you will meet up with another guy (who was going to join you getting beheaded earlier) They exchange words and that's when you can choose who to follow. Go with the rebels or follow the imperial. (It isn't a option you select, you just literally follow the person)

So apparently I told Lydia to wait for me and she got tired of waiting. Did I lose her as a follower? Can I find her?

I live with Isolde and have archmage qtrs. don't plan on buying breeze home right now so she is not there

Have you look back in Dragonsreach? I think that's the name of it. It's where the Jarl lives in Whiterun

Do the absorb health and stamina effects actually give stamina and health to you, or just remove from what you hit? For some reason I thought they did not give you any, like they did in Oblivon.

Any tips on how to level sneak up?
sneak 100% of the time. It builds up even when you think you are not sneaking past anyone.Sneak bow attacks add a little skill (and are very easy)Sneak dagger attacks add a lot of skill (are harder)
Find a guard that runs a regular pattern. There is one in Solitude that is perfect, patrols in a circular pattern around the center of town, never turns around fully. I get behind them at night and just follow them, doing the circuit right behind them. Levels up pretty well. The one that walks around Riften works too, but she will usually turn around at regular intervals. For her, I come out of sneak when she starts to turn around. Not that getting caught matters, you just have to listen to warnings from her. I imagine there is an equivalent in Whiterun too, I just never bothered doing it there. Like I said, far and away my favorite is the one in Solitude.

Adds to you.

Is it possible to build a tank who sneaks? I figure if I use 0 perks in magic, and instead place those perks towards sneaking, it should offset the heavy armor penalty when sneaking.

I was thinking of starting a second character after I exhaust my current spell sword who used heavy armor and a two handed weapon for a change of pace. I will still use archery as I can't see playing the game without it (too fun for me).

Sure although you don't need many, or any, points in Sneak.
oh cool. I thought the heavy armor would be enough of a penalty to have to spend some points in sneak. I will still add some for the bow x3 damage which I love.

Question about weapon damage on enchanted items:

If it says it does 15 and has a fire enchantment that does 10 points of fire damage... I assume that means it is a total of 25...

If that is true, why is the value of items not more correlated to their damage? This is a problem because followers appear to use the value to choose which weapon to equip... Any recommendations, or am I missing something?

I give up searching for peaceful means to save Thorald Gray-Mane from the Thalmor
I did it somehow but I think it involved killing a Thalmor. So I guess not so peaceful.
Was it one in the same fort? or at another location, because I couldn't do anything without setting off the whole lot of 'em. Tried completing the imperials side, and asking the General, nada. If I tried to sneak by, as soon as I got inside the "fail" notification would go off, so in the end I got so annoyed I took it out on everyone.

Mjoll is finally mine. It was bittersweet parting with my Lydia but such is life. At least I got the good stuff from her first. In retrieving Grimsever I used familiars for the first time. Found it effective for distracting the boss at the end.

You don't have to kill the mech to get the sword. You can get past him, grab it and head out the back way if you want. My familiars made this part easy by distracting him. However once you are behind him he has a hard time getting through the frame he was in and becomes an easy target. Since there are other adventures here I figured a full clean out was best.

This peaceful route is known to be broken. It doesn't work. UNLESS 1.4 fixed it.

How do you make stronger potions? Does it have anything to do with where each effect is? Example- using ingrediants with Invisibilty as the 1st effect. Would using 3 of those make the potion stronger?

Short answer: The best way to make stronger potions is to level up alchemy, invest some perks in it, and enchant the appropriate pieces of armor with a +alchemy bonus.Longer answer: In my experience it doesn't matter where each effect is listed, but I could be wrong. However, yes, some combinations will make better potions, but they are few and far between. For example, one potion type may have 6 different ingredients that can be used to make it. However, when you try every combination available, 2 of those 6 might create a better potion than any other combination you try. You just have to experiment. Also, once you add a 3rd ingredient, you can have all kinds of extra effects added. Off the top of my head, I know that Dragon's Tongue is invaluable, as it is a good mix with many potions. Using it, I've made potion that end up giving me a 2-handed bonus of 108% PLUS fire resistance of 81%, all in one potion.

Just had my most glorious dragon slaying ever.

Well actually the Giant and 2 Mammoths he was with basically took care of it.

I got credit though, was able to get all the bones, etc. of the dragon, collect the dragon soul and even got a 500 bounty on top. Not bad for, um, basically watching them battle and doing nothing.

OK, so I figure last night was as good a time as any to start smithing. I spent about 6k on ingots and leather strips, made about 75 daggers and raised a bit, but it was a HUGE financial loss. I think I made a whopping 500 gold.

Clearly Im doing this wrong.

6k seems like a lot. Did you enchant the daggers. If not, that is your problem. With an enchantment you should be able to fetch at least 100gp per dagger.

Did not enchant. Need to learn how to get into that.

Enchanted daggers are huge money makers. I would NOT make 6k worth at once when the time comes. It will take you days of traveling and waiting on merchants to reset to sell off that many.
This.I've found that I generally make WAY more daggers than I have filled soul gems to enchant with. I have a stash of around 100 iron daggers in a chest in breezehome. I usually just buyout the iron ingots from the blacksmith shop in whiterun, craft them all up then go enchant what I can and store the rest. At some point I need to get those all enchanted and cash out some of the potential gold savings that is sitting in that chest, but I'm notoriously terrible at remembering to use my soul trap bow and don't ever build up enough gems to do this.

To try to keep enchanting and blacksmithing in step with each other, I never made more daggers than I could enchant. Not sure if that was necessary or just my love of symmetry kicking in. Most likely I'm just OCD.Edit to add: I would store those in a cabinet near the kitchen. They are really just butter knives. I wouldn't insult my REAL weapons by putting them in the chest with them.

I probably need a better place to keep them. I have all the other random items that might someday eventually be used for crafting in a table downstairs (gems, pelts, ore, ingots, etc).Is it worth it (sell price wise) to upgrade the daggers before I sell them? I suppose its a better use of the ingot to simply make another dagger (I would imagine a bigger skill increase from making a new item than improving an existing one) but I always feel like a bit of a slacker selling an enchanted dagger that I know could easily be better.I really need to do a couple day long hunt using nothing but my soultrap bow. For the longest time I'd just had soul trap on my crappy hunting bow and wasn't using it for most battles due to lack of damage it caused. Once I got the arcane blacksmith perk I improved it and now the damage difference isn't so big that I don't want to use that bow. I've been buying out every court mage's supply of empty soul gems for quite a while now, so my stash will take a good amount of time to fill up.

Any of the other assassiny type archers use "Finriel's End"? Its a bow that comes available in the DB questline. Its stats indicate that it does 20 frost damage, but the wiki pages for the bow say that it also does 50 points of slow to the target, and that is unlisted on the bow's stats in the game. Is that slow just a consequence of the frost enchantment hitting the target, or is it something different?

I was using a bow that had similar damage and a frost enchantment, but switched out to Finriel's End for the slow enchantment, but if that happens every time you land a frost shot on someone I won't worry about keeping that bow around, and will eventually just make a better frost bow.

For those who have finished the main quest, some questions:

when i was sent back to the throat of the world, there were about a half dozen dragons flying around. Should i have attacked them? i tried dragonrend, pissed them off something fierce, and then just got the #### outta there
- Did you immediately start a new character?

- If not, what did you stick around for?

- Any recommended post-dragonslayer quests you recommend. Not really looking for the side quests. Maybe some things that are more interesting after having some of the post main quest shouts, weapons, etc

New strategy I'm trying.

Doing misc quests using onehanded/mage/lightarmor

Doing normal quests with my tank setup

Seems to be leveling quicker this way to keep things mostly equal. I just drop off my Type A gear at the house and pick up Type B when swapping.

It also is preventing the combat from becoming too easy. Though dragon fights are a bit of a pain in my B level setup.

Also, I just started playing on a new slim xbox. It seems much slower to load things than my old faithful sparky (hit by lightning and no longer connects via ethernet, nor allows optical audio). I wonder if I got a lemon xbox. I may just load the game to the HD which is my typical pattern.

I have been doing pretty much everything but the main quest at this point. I like to have other lines out of the way first. If I play it right I should wrap the main quest at about the time my guy is "maxed" out. I'll probably hang around for a bit to see what kind of trouble I can get into. I may leave the whole civil war thing hanging until after I finish the main if I do it at all.I will be creating a second character though. Now that I have played for a while I have a better feel for game play and what you need to be successful in most situations. Also I'll pursue the Dark Brotherhood line with my next character. So a little darker and edgier with the next guy. Don't think Mjoll will be the right companion for him.
