Busy day, I wasn't online much. They're there now.
BE BETTER!@!11

:lmao:

So a couple of days ago when I missed the "Song for the Dumped," I had checked the spreadsheet as I always do, but it wasn't there.  After you pointed it out, I did another search, "dumped" and then "ben folds," and still...nothing.  Then I noticed that it said that the last spreadsheet update had been two days prior.

And I thought...gosh darnit, Pip has finally given up on us good-for-nothings that have him do all the work, and he gave up.

Then I remembered I had been having wonky internet service for a couple of days.  I closed out the sheet and then reopened, and THANK GOD it was all there.

Thank you again for your service.

Once again, I did not type "gosh darnit".  :lmao:

Lotsa listens today on my last leg home.  I'm doing each in a separate post, maybe.  Maybe not.  Here's one.

Started out with The Highway:  I've found that starting the morning with something country-tinged works well, as they tend to be laconic and easy.  Not like starting the day with Noble Eightfold or something.  This was a great mix, but I didn't realize it was still a baby.  Very quick listen.  Of all I've checked out so far, this one seemed to hang the best together, but again it's just in its infancy.  Also, I didn't count but I'd swear it had a majority of female artists, which has to be unusual.

New to me highlight:  Jackson Emmer, "Don't Leave Me Blue."  This guy has an incredible, unusual voice, and a fantastic way of using it.  Will definitely check out more from him.

Moved on next to Eel Pie.  I was interested in this one because, while I'm fairly conversant in The Kinks, I've never listened to much from The Who.  No good reason for that.  Just never felt a need.  So I wanted to hear more from them and expand my knowledge.  This was a good mix for me, felt like wearing an old comfy sweater.  The Kinks songs were familiar and made me happy.  The Who songs were...well, the ones I knew and already liked were good, and the ones I didn't know were good, too.  But nothing new stood out to me as a must-listen-again.  But it was a mix where I didn't skip anything and felt a pleasant warmth.  Really nice combo of the bands' outputs.

Freestylin'!

I was excited for this one.  Somehow, I missed pretty much all of this music as I was off listening to Elvis Costello or something.  So except for the really big names (Run DMC, Public Enemy), there was a lot that I'd kinda heard of but not really listened to.

The mix did not disappoint!  I loved it.  It was really interesting to me to try, to my very untrained ear to this type of stuff, to discern the differences in styles and levels of talent and intricacy.  Not knowing when any of it came out exactly, I wondered if some of the stuff that seemed more "basic" to me was earlier or just that some of the artists were more incredible.

My new-to-me and loved list will be super-embarrassing, since it is stuff that I'm sure everyone but me knows, but here goes:

Young MC - someone I'd heard of but knew nothing from.  To my (again) untrained ear he sounded amazing.

Eric B. & Rakim - also had heard of them but knew nothing.  They were both perfect in what they did.

Utfo - Brilliant.  Just brilliant and fun.  Those lyrics were insanely good, and by the time he got to listing out all the different practices of medicine, I was dying.

Dylan:  You'd think I knew a lot more Bob Dylan than I do.  He's right in my wheelhouse, but outside of the big albums and songs I haven't delved very far, which is ridiculous.

Something I was worried about with this mix is that it would have too much...Dylan.  I mean, I don't dislike his voice like some people do, but I'm not sure I could listen to it for hours on end.  So I was really happy that about every five songs there was a cover or a different take.  It broke up the mix really well.  This was another "no-skip" experience for me (though there was one where I was thisclose) as I thought it flowed just great.  The new-to-me love was "One More Cup of Coffee" - was that Emmylou Harris?    I also really enjoyed the covers by Nina Simone and Neko Case that I hadn't heard before.

Bowie:  This was kind of a quick listen.  I have a great fondness for David Bowie as a human, but for whatever reason I haven't connected with his music.  My listening didn't change that, and I gave up not too far in.  I'll give it another whirl when I'm not also battling I-5 traffic and in a better mood.  I did ask in this or another thread where to start with Bowie, and I recall that Ziggy Stardust was recommended, which I think was a good idea.  The new-to-me songs from that (plus Life on Mars) were my favorites.

Last one, don't worry!  (be happy)

Beat It

I didn't think this mix would be cohesive, but it was surprisingly so even with a few different styles.  Really good! One thing I noticed about these is how tight and into it the whole band is when these amazing drumming parts are going on.  Highlights for me:

- I was really happy someone put "Funky Drummer" on there.

- Love Tony Allen with Fela Kuti but had not listened to this later stuff, so this is a whole new area to be happily mined.

- Not sure the Soundgarden or Rollins Band songs were to my taste overall, but the drumming was outstanding, so I'm glad I listened.  Same with The Police, even though I already knew that song.  I just don't like them much, but that's one of their better songs IMO and I enjoyed focusing on the drums.

- Sorta the opposite with the song from Ride - loved the song but the drumming didn't stand out to me.  A song I'd definitely put in the rotation, though!

Somehow in my long road trip I didn't listen to Road Trip Radio.  I think for consistency/irony, I'll listen while walking around town.

I selected that one. Yay! Yeah, it's Emmylou. Funny you should mention covers of Dylan, because I was introduced to it through a cover. The White Stripes do a killer cover of it off of their eponymous album. But yeah, I picked Dylan's version almost because of Emmylou Harris, so your love makes me feel good about the selection.

As for U.T.F.O., that was also yrs truly. Yo Mama was going to pick it, too, I think. Anyway, Roxanne fired back. Roxanne's Revenge. Pretty much disses the guys that were coming up to her that day to impress her. Both songs are more curio than songs I would really sit down and listen to repeatedly, but they have their place in rap lore. Roxanne's Revenge is sort of a landmark because of the constant unwanted attention women get walking around. It's not hyper-feminist (or even anti-materialist) by any stretch, but it's a rebuttal, and those were few and far between for women in that scene. So U.T.F.O. plays the Otis Redding role to Aretha there, if one were to use an analogy. Script got flipped.

Great channels today.  I might need to bonus it up tonight.

Strings and Things is a great listen. I’d never heard the Elbow song before and loved it.

I guess the string section connection works because the mix flows very well.

Round 303

Faith - George Michael (Hall of Very Good)

I’m not President of his fan club or anything, but with or without his time with Wham!, he put out some smart and iconic music and sold a ton of records to boot.

Round 303

Hall of Very Good

I think I'm the only one who has drafted this band(too lazy to check)

Maybe the fact they only did 6 albums is hurting their case but they were one of the leaders of the second wave.

Pixies- Here Comes Your Man
You were indeed too lazy to check. This song was taken in round 97 by ... you.

The only other Pixies song taken was Gouge Away, so you can replace it with anything else.

303.8 or 12 - The Monkees - Porpoise Song  (HoVG)

It seems like every other band from the late 60s have been inducted but not The Monkees. It's called the Hall of Fame and Messrs. Dolenz, Jones, Nesmith and Tork were the second most famous band of their era.

Round 303.xx

Category: Freestylin'

Song: Doowutchyalike

Artist: Digital Underground

A classic single from 1989, released before Sex Packets came out in 1990. Total technicality, but I'm taking it. Everyone probably knows how I feel about sampling and copyright, and this is one of the best examples of it and the best eras to demonstrate the difference between hip hop pre-Grand Upright (the case mentioned later) and hip hop after. Forward-looking artists in 1989 took advantage of liberal sampling laws to create sound collages and artistic pastiches of recordings that had come before. Rather than just a drum break and a loop, DJs and groups began using multiple sources to create their songs and the results were seen in albums like Sex Packets, De La Soul's Three Feet High And Rising, and Gang Starr's No More Mr. Nice Guy and other [redacted] works.

Some sample credits for "Doowutchyalike":

"Flash Light" by Parliament
"I Get Lifted" by KC & the Sunshine Band
"Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" by Vaughan Mason & Crew
"Good Times" by Chic
"Agony of Defeet" by Parliament
"Sexuality" by Prince
"Ain't No Half Steppin'" by Big Daddy Kane
"Atomic Dog" by George Clinton
"Keep Risin' to the Top" by Doug E. Fresh

From Wiki:

Grand Upright Music, Ltd. V. Warner Brothers Music, Inc.

[A] copyright case heard by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan sued rapper Biz Markie after Markie sampled O'Sullivan's song "Alone Again (Naturally)". The court ruled that sampling without permission constitutes copyright infringement. The judgment changed the hip hop music industry, requiring that any future music sampling be approved by the original copyright owners.

The court case had a major effect on hip hop music. Sample clearance fees prohibited the use of more than one or two samples for most recordings, with some mechanical rights holders demanding up to 100% of royalties. As each sample had to be cleared to avoid legal action, records such as those produced by the Bomb Squad for Public Enemy, which use dozens of samples, became prohibitively expensive to produce. According to Pitchfork, "Overnight it became forbiddingly difficult and expensive to incorporate even a handful of samples into a new beat ... Producers scaled back their creations, often augmenting one choice groove with a bevy of instrumental embellishments."

As a result, interpolation (replaying the requested sample using new instrumentalists, using the newly recorded version and simply paying the songwriters—and not the artist or the label—for use of the composition) became prevalent in the industry, especially in the work of Dr. Dre. As early as 1989, Dr. Dre's production was styled around fewer samples per track, studio instrumentation, and sampling artists such as Parliament-Funkadelic who were amenable to having their music sampled.[citation needed]

My note: This is why hip hop sounded different from early '93 and got all West Coast gangster Funkadelic until production companies caught up and DJs caught up with the new law at the end of the decade. There were many "classics" during this era, but they fall flat to my ears. I'm looking at you, Dre and Dogg.

This was covered by that band with the really long name I took a few rounds ago

The Monkees aren't in for the same reason as Three Dog Night. Musical lines were very clearly drawn back then and those acts were on the wrong side. You aren't getting the aging hippie electorate to admit that their thinking might have been wrong.

Listening to the Aretha and Otis Show.   What is the connection for the Mos Def and Rapsody tunes?
They sample Aretha. I'd put those on there as a Bonus and didn't expressly say that I didn't want them added, so they were. Once I realized they might be, I asked for the bonus ones not to. But ilov was leaving them in, and I decided that was cool. But they sample Aretha's voice, one from '65 and one from '71, I believe.

That's what I was assuming, thanks.  I liked the songs, just was curious.

I also loved the Cat Power song on there too.
