Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (5 Viewers)

Round 588

Ever since @simeybrought up Deliverance on Saturday night, been looking forward to dropping this one in.  Lo and behold, Associated Acts appears on the next roll.

A.  Beers, Steers, and Queers - The Revolting Cocks (associated acts)

Al Jourgensen (Ministry)

Richard 23 (Front 242)

Chris Connelly (Murder Inc.)

Luc Van Acker (Shriekback)

Paul Barker (Ministry)

On a more listenable note:

B. Such Great Heights - The Postal Service (associated acts)

Ben Gibbard (Death Cab)

Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel)

Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley)

588a.  Mastersystem - A Waste of Daylight (Associated)

Mastersystem was a one-off consisting of the Hutchison brothers from Frightened Rabbit and the Lockey brothers from Editors and Minor Victories.  It has a throwback 1990s Alt-Rock sound with grungy guitars, big drums and quietLOUD dynamics.

It was Scott Hutchison's final project before his death.  The arena rock settings take away some of the intimacy of Frightened Rabbit and his solo album but the pain and doubt is always there if you look for it.

I missed the summer
But didn't care
There will always be another
If I make it to next year

Round 588

Category: Vocal Cords/Chords

Song: While You Wait For The Others

Artist: Grizzly Bear

I've been lost in the wonder that is Veckatimest this past week. So much care went into this album in all respects including its recording, which is sublime. Truly headphone music.

588.  Tinted Windows - Kind of a Girl  (Associated Acts)

Power Pop one-off consisting of Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins, Taylor Hanson of Hanson and Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick.

I thought I drafted this for Power Pop way back when but I apparently didn't.

Tried to watch Deliverance once. I didn't even get through fifteen-twenty minutes of the thing. I got an awful sense of "you're not gonna like what comes next" and decided I didn't need the Appalachian lesson.

Lots of inappropriate sexual misconduct screened by me it seems.

And recommended or referenced by scorchy. 🤔

Hmmm...

Lol.

I was thinking that they were going for the Cheap Trick look and sound, and then I re-read your post...

Taylor Hanson was made to be a lead singer if that's who that is. Cuts quite the dashing figure.

Nice track.

I for sure could never see him in anything else without hearing him squeal.  Poor Ned.
It certainly is his most well known but his best performance is the cameo in Network.

You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I won't have it!

There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars.

I for sure could never see him in anything else without hearing him squeal.  Poor Ned.
I bet he was reminded of it his whole life by the public. Kinda like a woman gets cat-calls, Ned got pig squeals. That's ok, cause that movie launched his career, and he could snort all the way to the bank.   :moneybag:

Round 589

This song features Bruce Johnston from the Beach Boys and Toni Tennille on backup vocals. Also joining in on the harmonies are Joe Chemay, Stan Farber, Jim Haas, John Joyce, and on lead is Davis Gilmour. Roger Waters does not sing on this track.

The Show Must Go On - Pink Floyd  (Vocal Chords/Cords)

and

This is an old blues number from early Fleetwood Mac. Danny Kirwan is on lead vocal.

Without You - Fleetwood Mac  (Fleetwood Mac)

Dice roll for Wednesday and Thursday, Rounds 590 and 591

174 - 848 - 657 - 116

Vocal Cords/Chords (second roll)

Mantra (fourth roll)

Songs About Southern California (third roll)

Songs That Make You Cry (second roll)

Round 589:

Fleetwood Mac and Their Accountants and Whoever Else Was Hanging Around

A. Child of Mine -- Fleetwood Mac

IMO this is Danny Kirwan's best moment with the band.

B. Black Magic Woman -- Fleetwood Mac

Santana's cover has been drafted but Peter Green's original hasn't.

C. You Make Loving Fun -- Fleetwood Mac

Christine McVie's songs were always so joyous, even at the height of the band's drama (which she was not immune from, going through a divorce with the band's bass player, dating Dennis Wilson, etc.)

D. Sisters of the Moon -- Fleetwood Mac

Despite Tusk's reputation as a clusterfudge, I think Stevie Nicks' songs on it are mostly really good.

Yep, thanks.  After two unacknowledged offers from me to do it, he made it himself.
I think that in all the picking and talking I simply missed your post, k4. I would have gladly had you do it. Less work for me. When I saw that Pip said you offered, I looked at my application and I'd already made it.

Actually, back on page 483, the key is held. You offered, simey @"tted" me and I said I'd do it for some reason. I then posted the list to the Spotify list. I only quoted simey due to the fact that I've never figured out nested quotes on a Mac.

Thanks for the offer, though. Should be a good playlist.

Round 590

Category: Songs That Make You Cry

Song: Magic

Artist: Ben Folds Five

Ahhh, memories. I can remember when hearing this would make me lose it. Provokes the same immediate reaction these days. The whole album is a tear-jerker for me for some reason.

Round 590:

A. Mantra

Sometimes I Don't Need to Believe in Anything -- Teenage Fanclub

This could also qualify for Vocal Chords, though they have plenty of songs that fit there. Like Grand Prix, Shadows has two songs that tower above the others: This one and Into the City, which I took for the Bright Lights, Big City playlist.

B. Vocal Chords

Shadow Captain -- Crosby, Stills and Nash

Since they're now back on Spotify. The Crosby-penned opener to their 1977 reunion album shows off their harmonies at their best.
