Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (3 Viewers)

Don’t think that Cracker song is on Spotify. The Bruce version is, want that?
Not really - maybe Bruce's 57 Channels and Nothin' On, given I'm pretty sure it qualifies as a crime against humanity.  Seriously, the Bruce version is fine.  Thanks for asking.

My SIL, BIL and their kids were there this week as well. How was it?
The weather was perfect. So we did time at the beach, mini golfing and stuff like that. We tried not to all leave the house for very long stretches because of the cat.

My grandparents bought a property on the Cape in 1957, and I went there almost every summer of my childhood and most years thereafter. It was sold after my grandmother died in 2015, but my uncle bought back one of the houses on the property (there are three) a couple of years ago. My mother bought her own property in 2008. She just sold it because she doesn't think she is able to care for it anymore, so this was our last time at that house. But she will rent for a few weeks in subsequent summers, so we'll keep going up there (sans cats) as long as it's feasible.

Round 594:

100K

A. The Egg -- Shiner

6,155 monthly listeners

I found Shiner after the Spotify algorithm spit out one of their songs when I was listening to Failure. They are a post-hardcore band, whatever that means, from Kansas City who released four albums in their initial run from 1992 to 2003 and then re-formed in 2012 for the occasional gig and one more album. Their fourth album, The Egg (2001), mixes "alternative rock" and spacier styles not unlike what Failure did, and garnered somewhat of a cult following. What sticks out to me is that the drumming, by Jason Gerken, is outstanding, especially on the title track, which I have selected here. I may take another one of its tracks for Art Rock, etc next time that is rolled.

B. Monterey -- Starflyer 59

52,075 monthly listeners

Apparently Starflyer 59 is a "Christian shoegaze" band. In any case, I dig this song, which the Spotify algorithm also spat out to me at some point.

Songs That Make You Cry

C. Already Dead -- Beck

As I mentioned long ago, Sea Change was the soundtrack to my Lost Years. This may be the most despondent song in an album full of them.

D. I'm the One Who Understands -- War

During the Lost Years, when I wasn't agonizing over the loss of my marriage, I was agonizing over unrequited love/being put in the friend zone. This song encapsulates that experience and would devastate me whenever it came on.

Round 594A

Category: Artie And Paul In The Morning

Song: Richard Cory

Artist: Them

Cover song by Van Morrison and company is actually the first time I'd heard "Richard Cory."

Round 594B

Category: 100K

Song: Gone To The Moon

Artist: Fastbacks

This quite unheralded gem from about '93/'94 was played often on my radio show, one of the few pop-punk songs that were pure enough (very rockist, very pop, very under 2:30) to make it. I played it darn near every week back-to-back with "Hung On A Bad Peg." The first six or so songs off of Zücker, the album those songs are off of, could have really sufficed as the blueprint for everything I was playing back then.

Third reaction: "Wasn't there a Kristy McNichol movie based on the song?  Better go check IMDB."
I forgot about that movie. The first thing I saw Kristy McNichol in was some show called Apple's Way and then in a show called Family. I remember her brother, Jimmy, was on TV too.

We have a milestone:

100K (Artists with less than 100,000 monthly streams) -- 51 songs, 2 hours and TBD minutes

Only 35 of the songs are on the playlist, though. Doesn't look like it's been updated since we restarted.

Thinking about making it rain with my Beatles shtick on all the new categories that have been rolled since we restarted.

My sister showed me pictures today of their week at Emerald Isle, NC. They were there with her husband's side of the family to celebrate his Uncle's 85 birthday, his sister's 35th wedding anniversary, and to spread his cousin Katie's ashes.

I mentioned in a draft back in November that my BIL's cousin, Katie, was murdered by her boyfriend that she had planned on leaving. He also killed himself. They had a celebration of life for her this past March on her birthday in Denver. My sister's family flew out for it.  Katie loved visiting Emerald Isle in the summers, and also visiting Cape Cod (her dad and stepmom live in Boston), and they wanted to spread some of her ashes in both of those places. They spread some of her ashes last Sunday evening at Emerald Isle. They toasted her out on the beach, and they had pretty roses and daisies placed in the sand in various places. My sister said that the tide had taken most of the flowers out to sea by the next day, but there was a group of flowers that survived the tide. Everyone wondered if this was a sign from Katie that she was there. Each day they would go to the beach to see if Katie was still there, and each day she was, and they would draw a new heart around her. Friday they took group pictures, and they were always standing behind Katie. She was in all of the group pictures. She was there.

Round 595

Category: Emerald Isle

Song: Sha Sha Sha

Artist: Fontaines D.C.

I feel like this stomper this afternoon. It's sort of a glam strut minus the platforms we're so used to in America.
