I can tell you one difference: Neil Young has plenty of songs that qualify as mellow classic rock. Except for some of his contributions to the Stills-Young Band's Long May You Run album*, he has none that qualify as yacht rock. At the time he hated that sound and called it "layered bull----."

* - I'm thinking cocaine was involved. I mean, they recorded it in Miami.

Most of what was called soft rock then is called yacht rock now. But I'm sure there are some exceptions.

I haven't listened to The Bridge in a good long while, but it used to be more early-70s singer-songwriter-y stuff (James Taylor, Carole King, S&G, Bill Withers, Carly,  various solo Beatles mellow output, etc...). Yacht Rock leans more later 70s/early 80s. But you could mix & match the two playlists and still catch a nice vibe.
