I still cry thinking about my Abbey at least once a week, something always gets me. The other day it was "Just Exist" by Eliza and the Delusionals, a song that I love and drafted here but was hitting it's peak when we lost her (and also the lyrical content)

Another theme to this quartet, sort of.
A. Out of the Darkness -- Crosby and Nash
Crosby wrote this with help from Nash and Craig Doerge about trying to emerge from being the drug-addled zombie he had been since the death of his girlfriend in a car crash in 1969. It's full of mantras like "Be the light or love will fade away" and "I'm coming out of the darkness, finally my soul can take a rest." It could also qualify for the good songs/bad albums playlist, as it comes from the 1976 duo album Whistling Down the Wire, which is mostly dull and is nowhere near the quality of the previous year's Wind on the Water. (This album is also inexplicably filed under Crosby instead of Crosby & Nash on Spotify.)
B. Into the Darkness -- Crosby, Stills and Nash
Things had gotten much worse for Crosby by 1982, and Nash released all his frustration about it in this song from Daylight Again. The lyrics are unsparing:
Into the darkness soon you'll be sinking
What are you doing? What can you be thinking
All of your friends have been trying to warn you
That some of your demons are dying to drag you
Away (Into the darkness) into the darkness
Into the darkness away
I see you coming to the end of the day
And was it worth it? No one can say

As mentioned earlier, this was supposed to be a Stills/Nash album; Crosby was only brought in at the last minute after hectoring by the record company. I'd say it must have been awkward when Crosby added his vocals to this one, but that implies he had any self-awareness at all in 1982, which is not an assumption we can make.
C. Dark Star -- Crosby, Stills and Nash
The darkness here has nothing to do with Crosby. The song, from the 1977 CSN reunion album, is about an affair Stills had in the mid-70s, when he was married to French singer Veronique Sanson. With who? "This isn't People magazine," Stills wrote in the entry for this song on the 1991 box set liner notes.
D. Ambulance Blues -- Neil Young
Unexpectedly given how bleak many of his songs are, I could not find any Neil song with "Dark" in the title. So I'll give you some "Blues" from him in the form of the cryptic closer from On the Beach. The CSNY connection is that he performed it at some of the shows on the 1974 CSNY reunion tour.

Listened to the Horror Show while working yesterday and it's a pretty good listen. If you weren't looking at the list of songs in there I doubt most would guess the theme.

My childhood friend Brian used to sing this all the time when we were kids one year. He loved the break between the first part of "She" and the line the subsequently followed. He loved the melody line, I guess you would say. We were new to music, of course, so this thrilled him. He wound up into prog rock (yes, Rush) and still plays in a remarkably good band in San Diego. I haven't seen him since I moved out here, though he asked once. I was always out-of-sorts, and then COVID happened. Have to put that one on the bucket list. Can still remember this record in his room. Glass Houses, IIRC. Billy doesn't look like he's really going to throw that rock on the cover, by the way. His foot and leg look like he's already thrown an awful throw. Like Sam Bradford. His body ain't turned right. At least open those hips, Billy!

Truly, hit me Monday around noon and I was a total mess until yesterday evening. As a kid, apparently I was REALLY happy when this song came on the car radio. Which led to my parents buying me the 52nd Street cassette.

One of the most insane shows I ever saw was Beck in 2006 -- there were marionettes and stuff. He ended the set with a frenzied medley that began with this.

Neil's output took a turn for the worse starting in 2002. The first offender was Are You Passionate?, a dull undertaking in which Booker T. and the MGs backed him on most songs. The highlight was a song left over from an aborted attempt at a Crazy Horse album the previous year. Goin' Home brings the fury as well as anything on Ragged Glory -- and doesn't fit with the rest of the album in the slightest.

BONUS <100K SONG
My friend Joe Cassidy died yesterday. He was a larger-than-life part of the Belfast music scene in the 1990s, then broke into the Chicago scene and wowed everyone. Not just because he was supremely talented, not to mention impossibly handsome, but...but...he was just big. Big in heart, big in generosity, big in love, big in any positive attribute you could name. Mesmerizing in a way I've never known anyone else to be. He was also the best storyteller, as only a native Irishman can be. He knew everyone. And so when, for instance, David Bowie died, of course Joe had two stories of his encounters with David Bowie. Everyone. But not in a name-dropping way, but with a sense of magical wonder at what an amazing life he'd been blessed to lead.
Joe was an animal lover and had lost his beloved dog a year or so ago, but recently found a tiny sick kitten on a farm and was nursing her through her rough days. He nursed everyone through their rough days, as it's hard to fathom a more caring, genuinely kind person, who would spend any amount of time for a friend in need. Or hell, a stranger in need.
I've typed so much already but have so much more to say. Instead I'll sum it up with what someone else posted today: "sincere, dark as night, handsome as hell, kind as heaven." Or this one: "He lived more in his life than 100 people. And all the life he led, he was humble and warm, kind and helpful, making time whenever anyone would reach out."
RIP Joe, perhaps the most alive person I've ever known.
My favorite song from Joe's first band, Butterfly Child, is Drunk on Beauty (warning: 90s video cliches). Unfortunately it's not on Spotify. A lot of people have been posting the following song today in Joe's memory, which is from Butterfly Child's reunion album about 20 years later and contain lyrics that are reaching people due to the news of his death.

One thing I will say was that I had no fever the entire time. Had aches but some Aleve took care of that. So this was actually very restful as I drifted it and out of it. I just literally had no energy to do anything and couldn’t hold down a drop of anything but a little coconut water here and there. It was a weird experience and I thought maybe it was COVID. But given how quickly it came on and quickly went, I am pretty positive it was a really nasty bit of food poisoning.

I went out of town late Tuesday afternoon, and when I went to the colony tonight I couldn't find the siamese named Flash. I saw her Monday. She is part of the welcoming committee that welcomes me every night when I go to feed them. Anyway, I found her after looking around for her, and she was at the end of the gravel road (which dead ends) dead. She looks like she has been dead for at least 3 days. I don't know what happened to her, and she was too decomposed to see any visible attack marks. There is a family of new foxes out there, but mother fox usually doesn't bother the cats, and she eats with them. I don't think Flash would have messed with her children. There are coyotes out there, but it seems like one would have taken her away. Sucks. I knew bad luck was coming in some form, because the room I stayed in while away was room #9. I couldn't switch rooms or I would have.

I needed that. Yeah, one of those people where every woman wanted to date him, and every man wanted to be him. 
By the way, though he lived a rock-star life, he didn't die a rock-star death. Instead, he got ####### pneumonia in his 40s that turned to sepsis and he ####### died. What the ####### ####. It's still completely unreal to me.
