I am going ham today and tomorrow, you have been warned.

Round 497:

Segue Way

A. Can't Stop the Music (He Played It Much Too Long) / Is It a Star -- Daryl Hall and John Oates

B. Eastern Intrigue / Initiation (live) -- Todd Rundgren

As I mentioned before, the War Babies album (1974) was produced by Todd for Hall and Oates, but mostly sounds more like him than them. The opening pair matches one of Oates' best songs with their spaciest song, joining them by a churning sound effect.

Todd used the War Babies sessions to flesh out some ideas that he would use on his own albums. Particularly, parts of Can't Stop the Music can be heard in the title track of his 1975 album Initiation. Live, it was paired with Eastern Intrigue, the track that preceded it in the studio, and on the Back to the Bars live album, they are joined seamlessly -- the break on Spotify actually has the instrumental intro to Initiation at the end of the Eastern Intrigue track, starting the Initiation track when the vocals come in. Another benefit to using the live version -- for Krista -- is that the sax solo on the studio version of Initiation is missing.

This Is the End

C. Cornwall Blank -- America

Whatever you may think of his lyrics (they're mostly not good), Dewey Bunnell wrote some fantastic musical codas, especially on America's second and best album, Homecoming. This is one of the standouts.

D. A Sailor's Life -- Fairport Convention

This 11-minute epic take on an old English folk tale builds to a feverish climax in its last four minutes, driven by some otherworldly guitar playing from Richard Thompson.

Love this one. I’m not a huge Perry/Journey fan but love how Steve’s powerful voice comes in for the bridge/chorus after Rollie’s more smooth “classic” vocals.
I think we are close in age. Do you remember these songs always being played together? Rolie and Perry complimented each other great, and those companion songs are my favorite(s) from any Journey era. It was like two different Journey eras colliding, and bringing out the best in each other for that moment in time.

Rolie and Perry complimented each other great, and those companion songs are my favorite(s) from any Journey era. I'm not Doc Oc but I remember the FM rock stations in Philly playing this combo in the '80s when I was in middle school and high school.

@Raging weaselor whoever: Here are a few things still missing from some playlists:

Drinking:

Strawberry Wine by Ryan Adams

Swimming Pools by Kendrick Lamar

Applausible:

Walk, Walk by Yael Naim

The Year of the Spider by Shannon and the Clams

Clap Hands -- Beck

Food:

What Is Soul by Funkadelic (Spotify doesn't have a question mark in the title, if you couldn't find it, that's probably why)

Short Skirt:

Dress by PJ Harvey

Forever in Blue Jeans by Neil Diamond

Radio Alpha:

Dumb Blonde by Dolly Parton

I'd add these myself if I had the app.
Added!

Yes - they were always played together.

Eastern Intrigue / Initiation (live) -- Todd Rundgren
will the real god please stand up?

Pip - saw your puzzled reaction ...lyrics from the song

As the sun rises in the east
As the wind blows the fog across the sea
As the hand of man creeps across the face of the world
Caught in a web of glamours
Persian perfume and oriental eyes
Yogi in knots and sufi wise
Master sublime and swami high
Through in some voodoo on the side
And a dash of the old kung fu
Lord you got me strung out on eastern intrigue
Chapter six and verse eleven
If you wanna get to heaven
You've got to ask the man who owns the property
Ya gotta dance your dance
And do your act
And get his big attention that's a natural born fact
I'm on my knees, one question please
Will the real God please stand up?

Jesus and moses, mohammed, and sri krishna
Steiner, gurdjief, blavatsky, and bhudda

Guru maharaji, reverend sun myung moon

On the banks of the holy nile
As the palm tree sways at the base of the sphinx
'Neath a crescent desert moon many thousands
Younger than ours
In fact, forget about time completely
Think of it in the abstract please
Think of the swaying tropic trees
One of your many destinies
Like having a hot peyote tea
In the palace of fu manchu
Lord you got me strung out on eastern intrigue
Sell your wife and pawn your heater
Buy the new bhagavad gita
Do the pranayama 'til your spine gets sore
I'll tell you for free
'Cause God told me
We checked it with the pope and so we all agree
I'm on my knees, one question please
Will the real God please sit down?

@krista4 - tell e-Mk4 that I thought of him :oldunsure:  when I was writing down my first pick.  Pretty sure I remember him being a fan from a previous draft.  I also thought the Stonehenge needs help, and had The Groundhogs written down for a possibility tonight.

Re-discovered Breadfan this afternoon.

Love the top comment: "I'm gonna tell my kids this is RUSH."

Catch-up time.  I hadn't taken anything but my requisite one Beatles-related song in the CSNY category, since we have an expert to curate that playlist, but I'm feeling Neil today.

493.k4  Neil Young - Mellow My Mind

494.k4  Neil Young - Goin' Back

Going to do a Beatles two-fer here in Good Songs/Bad Albums.

495.k4  George Harrison - All Those Years Ago

From Somewhere in England.  Only one other song from that album made my countdown, and barely so.  This album suffered from production disputes between Warner Brothers and George, who was just trying to fulfill his last obligation under contract and wasn't much interested in making music at the time.  Only after John's murder did this song come together and get repurposed as a tribute to John, with the addition of Ringo and Paul to the recording making it the first time three Beatles had worked together on a track since "I Me Mine."

George's worst post-Beatles album is actually Gone Troppo, but I already drafted the only decent song on there.

496.k4  Wings - Mumbo

From the dreadful first Wings album, Wild Life, which was so bad that Paul wrote up liner notes from an alias called "Clint Harrigan" praising the album and its production, only years later to admit that Harrigan was Paul himself.  Rolling Stone called this album "vacuous, flaccid, impotent, trivial and unaffecting."

Paul's worst post-Beatles album is actually Press to Play, but it's so bad I can't even fit anything into the "good song" part of the equation.

Round 497

Segue Way

Other than the occasional shuffle play I don't think Ive ever heard just 1 of these songs played apart.

Led Zeppelin- Heartbreaker

Led Zeppelin- Living Living Maid(She's Just a Woman)
I had the original Zep albums on cassette in the '80s. The cassette broke them up, switching Heartbreaker to the end of side 1 and Thank You to the beginning of side 2. Madness!

Oddly, they were never played as a pair live because Page hated Living Loving Maid.

I remember that it included a cover of Neil's On the Beach, a song most Gen-Xers weren't familiar with because the On the Beach album was out of print and the internet didn't really exist yet.

As with the acts I picked, I presume the low monthly listens amount is due to the peak of the artist's activity being long before Spotify existed, and there being no current effort to promote their content on Spotify (or anywhere, probably).
When was it out of print because I’m pretty sure this guy Kurt I smoked a lot of pot with in college had the vinyl?

I think I’m Gen X and it’s one of my favorites.

Didn't know either of those things. Never had it on cassette but it would be weird to hear it that way. I wonder how many people only listened to the cassette and didn't know they were basically a pair?

Dunno. The radio played them as a pair, and I imagine most people who had the cassette were also listening to the kinds of radio stations that would play them as a pair. When I got the cassette I knew the order was "wrong" because I was familiar with the way it was played on the radio.

Speaking of weird cassette configurations, the cassette of On the Beach had the sides switched -- which was what Neil originally wanted for the vinyl until David Briggs talked him out of it. I can't imagine the "honeyslide trio" of On the Beach / Motion Pictures / Ambulance Blues opening the album instead of closing it.

Round 498:

Filthy Lucre

A. Fontainebleau -- The Stills-Young Band

Most of Neil's money-related songs came much later in his career and have no subtlety. This one prompted some critics in 1976 to ask why Neil would write about a hotel, but here are the key lines:

Fontainebleau, they painted it green
Fontainebleau, for the well-to-do
At the Fontainebleau

There's a palace in the gravy
That's holding on and on and on
Even after all the blue-haired ladies
And the wheelchairs are gone

I guess the reason I'm so scared of it
Is I stayed there once and I almost fit
I left before I got out of it

People were drownin' in their own

&

Some of the music is adapted from Pushed It Over the End, a much better song that he abandoned after the 1974 CSNY tour and failed reunion album. Oh well, we can't have everything.

B. Open Letter (to a Landlord) -- Living Colour

This is my neighborhood
This is where I come from
I call this place my home
You call this place a slum
You wanna run all the people out
This is what you're all about
Treat poor people just like trash
Turn around and make big cash

&

Diamonds in the Rough

C. Don't Kill the Whale -- Yes

1978's Tormato was a fiasco. The band was at odds over their sound: Steve Howe, Chris Squire and Alan White wanted to rock, while Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman wanted to make more intricate music. No one seems to have put much effort into the songs or arrangements as a result. (Check out "Circus of Heaven" if you feel like cringing.) Making matters worse, for some reason, Anderson sang in his most nasally voice possible, and Wakeman employed new synth technology that made everything sound like a wheezing harpsichord.

The only track that transcends the mess is this one, a socially conscious rocker that is lifted by strong performances from Howe on guitar and Squire on bass.

D. Not Now John -- Pink Floyd

I HATE The Final Cut. Hate it, hate it, hate it. It's a lugubrious, joyless therapy session masquerading as a rock and roll record. #### you, Roger Waters. (I dislike most of Disc 2 of The Wall for the same reason.) Ten of the 11 tracks have zero energy, misconceived orchestrations and maximum whining. The only track on which Waters allowed Floyd to sound like themselves was this one, and he made us wait until the next-to-last track on side 2. Even here, the lyrics are problematic, but David Gilmour works his magic and the rhythm section propels things along crisply.

@KarmaPoliceor whoever: The following picks are missing from the Moar Cowbell playlist:

Wild Wild West by Escape Club

Rock of Ages by Def Leppard

Hotter Than Hell by Kiss

Evil Woman by ELO

Rock 'N Roll by The Runaways

Intelligent Workshop by Fu Manchu

I had Goin' Back at #75 on my Neil countdown. Mellow My Mind did not make my top 204 and I explained why here.
I wondered when I posted these two whether they were on your list.  I thought Goin' Back must have been based on where it showed up on a playlist of mine (that is, I thought I got it from you based on timing on stuff being added), but I figured Mellow My Mind might not have been.  What I love about Mellow is Neil's terrible vocal.
