I thought up an interesting gimmick for an all-time albums draft yesterday and planned to post them this morning but NV beat me to the line. :bag:

I'm good saving the 2010s draft for later, I just want something on the main board that doesn't make me want to post something and earn a lifetime ban on another account.

This is what i had in Notepad

The Pick a Pair / Half Decade  Album Draft

1. Drafters select TWO albums each round from a single artist but they must have been released in different half decades.

2. Half decades start with zeros and fives, e.g. 1980-84, 2005-09. The entire 1950s and 2020s are considered eligible half decades.

3. The rules create some scarcity and prevent every Beatles and Led Zeppelin album from being drafted.  Artists with extended runs of excellence gain an advantage as well as those whose prime luckily landed on the cusp of a new half-decade.

Optional Nerd achievement points for the most and least half-decades represented, as well as blocking out previously drafted artists. Write-ups comparing and contrasting the two albums are always welcome.

Since my draft has already been drafted, it's this, or my 70s 90s 10s thing or re roll in here. Or I call Crosseyed a dumb#### and never come back

I vote for the easiest. But try to refrain from that fishing trip disguised as an earnest comeback. I'm not buying any of it. I'm skeptical™

The Pick a Pair concept is deceptively easy.  No dice, very little bookkeeping but with oblique strategies to be discovered.

What's everyone been listening to lately?
Daft Punk, Neil Young, Big Star, Kanye, Velvet Underground, Spoon, Mudhoney. Mainly those bands. You've probably seen me mention them if you've been around on the boards. I've taken out or bumped threads about four of those bands.

It's really all I talk about anymore here. It's the only thing that seems to bring the joy, as it were.

But back to the bands: Those have pretty much dominated the past week of mine. Big Star is pretty influential the past week of my life, just unspoken. "O, My Soul" has been running through my head, as has the riff/solo before the bridge (?) of September Gurls.

Yeah, I would have guessed several of those based on conversations. I need to dive deeper into Big Star. I like everything I have heard but have never really scratched the surface. A lot of Mamas and the Papas for me. A sucker for harmonies and they have such a chill and positive sound. Lou Adler really nailed his work with them.  I listened to Daft Punk today after the thread. I always enjoy them. Some old school Drake as well after being so disappointed with CLB. Also people can laugh but Henley, Eagles, Seger and Jackson Brown. They all remind me of late summer, early fall. It is a beautiful time here in Michigan.

I was singing "Pretty Maids All In A Row" the other day. I'm pretty sure I mentioned in a thread once that it was our eighth grade song, which, come to think of it, was a lot more poignant than our prom theme, which was "Without You" by Mötley Crüe.

Doctor, My Eyes.

I really liked Crue and Poison when I was about 17-18. It was a short lived stint but it was the music I played before every HS party my senior year.  Literally not a care in the world and just being a total moron.

I've gone down a rabbit hole this week with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. They're a classical ensemble who make artistic decisions collectively and perform without a conductor. I'd never heard of them before but their recent collaboration with Jazz pianist Brad Mehldau was my gateway.

They've recorded a lot of albums on DG since the mid-80s. The small size of the orchestra dictates their repertoire so there's more 17th century music and original commissions.

Loved Poison in eighth grade, too. And Van Halen. But I also dug the Eagles, man. Dug it.

Why do we give up our hearts to the past?
And why must we grow up so fast?
And all you wishing well fools with your fortunes
Someone should send you a rose
With love from a friend
Nice to hear from you again
And the storybook comes to a close
Gone are the ribbons and bows
Things to remember places to go
Pretty maids all in a row
All in a row...

The Eagles' vibe (notice I said vibe and not the plural which needs retiring) still works for me. Van Halen a little less and Poison waaay less.

Van Halen no longer really works for me, either. Poison stopped working for me in tenth grade. Van Halen stuck around much longer, though.

Diver Down!

Are you going or am I?

I have very busy days tomorrow and Friday but can start something for next week.

Along with my movie selections lately, I seem to be reverting back to HS or before and metaling it up.   Did a re-listen of all the early Megadeth and Maiden albums.   Been spinning a bit of Badmoterfinger too.

In between that, I listened to the new Lorde, Chvrches, and Lord Huron albums.

Early Megadeth and Maiden was a favorite of my friend Brian's, who would go on to be a professional drummer. I can remember the days of Eddy and Megadeth's attempt to re-create an Eddy-like character on their album covers and posters. Fitting.

I always liked the early Megadeth -- something about them appealed to 15 year-old rockaction.

I've mostly been listening to and watching Blue Jays telecasts and it has been gooooooooood.

But on the weekend, I went on a big acoustic binge, building a "campfire playlist", then listened to some mainstream 80s radio rock (Van Halen, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, GNR, etc.. I was just in the mood) and a whole lot of New Pornographers.

This is going to sound like a hot take or trolling post and if I read it, I would probably think the same but... my ultimate judge of what music I care to ever listen to again, is my ongoing "Favourites" playlist, which I constantly add to and subtract from in order to curate that timeless NV feeling and based on that, my favourite Eagles associated song of all time is...

You Belong To The City

Whoa. The one with the sax? You are nothing if not diverse, I'll say that, NV.

I'm a Pretty Maids All In A Row/Hotel California/Life In The Fast Lane for high energy-type-of-guy.

If I had to pick an Eagles song, it would probably be "The Last Resort"
I find almost all of Hotel California dreadfully boring. And I think The Long Run is mostly a trainwreck. (In the City is great, though.)

I really like the first two albums, though, and about half of each of the third and fourth.

We're now in that time of year where I'm listening to a lot of Survivor podcasts in advance of the new season.

The last few times I've had music on, it's been the I Heart Prog playlist in stretches of 30 minutes or so.

This sent me down the Wikipedia wormhole and I found out Vince Gill is a current member of the Eagles. I've listened to a fair bit of 90s country lately too, it was what I listened to at the time :bag: .

I never liked Gill back then but listening back, his stuff aged better than most and it seems like he's had a pretty cool career and life (Married to Amy Grant, does charity work with the Nashville Predators, excellent golfer, country music hall of fame, member of the Eagles).

He's a fine picker

Oh, I forgot my favorite Eagles song of my twenties.

Already Gone. I had had a lousy girlfriend in college at one point. It was towards the end, and we were just not getting along whatsoever. My friends hated her. Her friends hated her. I hated me. Anyway, it had to end. I found a new girlfriend in due time and got this punk compilation 7" of bands covering songs that otherwise wouldn't be considered punk but were. I picked it up in Northampton, MA after the first girl and I had broken up and I enjoyed the ever-loving hell out of it. It became a sort of belt-it-out tune whenever my emo #### would drag me down about my priors. (I was emo around the Weezer Pinkerton years, an early adopter of sorts, but just by nature, really.)

I like all of the songs on Hotel California, and I like The Long Run album. Some of my favorite songs on TLR album are In The City, King of Hollywood, I Can't Tell You Why, Sad Cafe, and Those Shoes.

Hey, simey, good to see you. You are missed. How's things been the past few weeks?

It's good to see you too, rock. This week has been crummy. Wilma the Wagon was having some issues, and the mechanic that worked on her put in a bad part for the second time, and he refused to believe that it was a bad distributor again. He tried to convince me and himself that my car takes 93 octane, and I even showed him that in my owners manual it says it takes 87. He got animated with me and yelled. His wife works behind the counter, and since he was too hard headed and hot headed to listen, I explained to her. She said she would talk to him. She called yesterday and he is putting in another distributor on Monday. Hopefully it is from a different manufacturer, and it is a good one.

Sending vibes out for Wilma. I hope he's not just trying to use the same part or something or that it's a deeper problem where something else is throwing the distributor off (I know absolutely nothing about cars. My shop class consisted of my friend rebuilding the lawnmower engine we were supposed to take apart and rebuild).

I'm ready to watch some football tonight!  :football:
Same here! Been a long off-season. :football:
