Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (6 Viewers)

Some serious inconsistencies between the roll sheet and my sheet. Have moved categories back into either Daytona or the Hopper. Some cutting and editing had to be done, I guess. There were four categories who hadn't been rolled yet that got bumped out of the main tournament. They await their turn in the Datyon Airport, headed for the main event eventually all over again.

Eephus wasn't always clear about what layer of things categories were on, so my retirement tracking post may have some inconsistencies: https://forums.footballguys.com/topic/789651-genrepalooza-presents-fg-radio-tons-of-lithium-but-very-little-chill/?do=findComment&comment=23035740. If you see anything that's off, let me know.

Cool. I went by your list, but there are different categories on the roll list. I don't think there are any that are already rolled that I missed, so it's really like a reset button for them. We should be okay. My retirement process isn't the same as Eephus's (it always confused me), so my big worry was that we would run out of categories, but I don't see that happening too quickly because of this. Still lots of dice to be rolled.

Round 554

Category: Horror Show

Artist: Aesop Rock

Song: The Gates

I was at the gates
Ram's legs, my pizza black, my plants dead
My planet X, I might bleed green
I'm what's under the uncut chia seed
I'm what, what, what, what from the guillotine
A little flea and tick, a little fever dream
A little plead the fifth
Roadkill, I'm off leash
I don't heel and I'm hung from an unkind mobile
I turn one misstep into bonemeal
Look, daybreak, I'm lights out
My kind sleeps upside down

Round 554

Category: Horror Show

Artist: The Damned

Song: Plan 9 Channel 7

And offers that he stay a while
Two hearts that beat as one
And eyes that hardly ever saw the sun
Hollywood babbles on
She lays a wreath of lilies on his grave
His flame gone along with the love he never gave
Not to be seduced by those red lips
Two dimensional comic clips
Hollywood babbles on
On and on and on and on and...

How was your exam last night?
Not as hard as I thought it would be, but when you can't read the rich text format from Windows to a Mac, you'll miss things like spaces, typeset errors -- I even missed an it's/its distinction, which I know cold. It just wasn't an optimal format from which to take a class. I wasn't able to convey how much I learned because of the software issues that went along with the course. The grammar questions were difficult enough; I needed to be able to read a clean document on a clean screen, not the sort of madness we were getting.

But that's over. Everybody passed the class with at least a "C," he said. That's no great shakes, but I'll take it. I learned a ton. So, it served its purpose.

Thanks for asking, simey.

From now on, each roll will count for two rounds. So today is 555, tomorrow will have the same categories but be Round 556. This makes it easier to just remember that we flip one round per day, even if the categories stay constant for two.

In keeping with that.

These format issues for a copyediting class sound challenging. I'm glad you still learned a lot, and it served its purpose. I guess it would be hard to fail someone with the computer issues that made the class more difficult.

I had an accounting teacher that told everyone that if we always came to class and tried, he would not fail us. It was a night class from 6:30 to 9:30, and he took roll usually after the break. He used to suck on cough drops in class, and I would wonder if he was trying to cover up the booze on his breath, because he went to happy hour prior to class. The night of the class, a restaurant called Annabelles had 10 cent shrimp from 5 to 7, and all day $1.50 highballs. One of my roommates was a bartender there, and I ate shrimp one night before class, and I spotted him there. I told my roommate he was my teacher, and she said he always came in on Thursdays, and ate shrimp and drank one or two gin and tonics. He never seemed inebriated in class, but his face was always red, but that could just be his complexion. He was a great teacher.

Our Constitutional Law professor was a king of Irish coffee. He would start class coherent and then after about an hour or so, he was slurry and sauced. His gift to the student who "won" the final exam with the best exam was a bottle of good liquor. I could have used that liquor, but a bunch of people had gotten hold of an old exam and he used the exact same one that year. Some guy who really wasn't that well-versed in con law won it. I wondered how that dude could really live with himself. Exams aren't ever supposed to leave the room, and it's not like undergrad where possession of one is fine. It's totally against he rules.

Harumph. See what I did there? I went from sharing a memory about a tipsy professor into a total sidebar with a sidecar. Crash!

~555.  Bernard Wright - Haboglabotribin'  (Funk)

Bernard Wright was an underrated keyboard session man (and Roberta Flack's godson) who released a few solo albums in the early 80s.  "Haboglabotribin'" is best known as the central sample on Snoop's "Gz and Hustlas".  Unfortunately, Wright didn't have a writer's credit on the original tune.

Wright passed away last month at the age of 58 after being struck by a car in Dallas.

I could have sworn the early Snoop records used to be on Spotify.
Huh. I just scrolled through a ton to have it stop at 1998. That's too late for early Snoop. I wonder if it's because of Death Row Records. The Chronic by Dre isn't there, either. It's grayed out.

None of Dre's stuff used to be on there when he was exclusive to Apple.  I think Compton is probably the most recent purchase in my iTunes if that still exists.  I think it came out after the free U2 album I never listened to until a couple of years ago.

Some Death Row stuff is on Spotify e.g. All Eyez on Me so it may be more of an issue with sample clearances.

Ahh, that would make sense. But by 1993, weren't they having to clear the samples anyway? And they sampled Clinton and P-Funk because George had signed the rights away? The de minimis standard evaporated when Biz Markie got slapped down in 1991, so paying for the clearance had to have already happened by '93.

Ah, here's our answer. From three months ago, so you're not wrong about them having been on streaming services.

I don't miss them as much as I do Joni but it's still a drag.

Indeed. I hate when I see the dreaded greyscale in place of the bright white of the song listing.

Since we started the Funk playlist, the Alexander O'Neal song has gone gray.  There's a re-recording O'Neal did in 2020 but it's not good.

Ironically, the song is titled "Fake".

You're a fake baby
you can't conceal it
Know how I know
'cause I can feel it.
You're a fake baby
no rhyme or reason
'Cause in your mind
it's lyin' season.

Promotion from Daytona to Main Event:

Six-sided die. Die roll: 3

Radio, Radio

Promotion from The Hopper to Daytona

Sixteen-sided die. Die roll: 15

Miles Davis (needs to be workshopped)

Hopefully we can come up with some ideas about what to do with the Miles Davis category before he reaches the main event. That's the housekeeping. That leaves us with fifty categories in the Mainer (just like Sister Ray said), six in Daytona, and fifteen in The Hopper.

Enjoy your Wednesday evening, folks.

Whoops. Your link goes to the top of the page. (Sort of wanted to hear what they had in store.)
Fixed

Never heard this before
Hopefully not snark to my poor linkage skills. The whole album is pretty cool. I only recently discovered it after watching Monterrey Pop Festival again and wanting to find more Ravi. I had no idea he and Glass did a whole album together taking spins on each others work and co-writing some songs as well.

Anything Miles Davis played on is pretty broad as it is  If you add one degree of separation, it expands to cover a large portion of Jazz history.
Thanks. We can go one degree of separation, but you have to have played with Miles. (I'm personally motivated to make this easy on myself, really. I can imagine you, Pip, ilov, simey, and k4 and Dr. Octopus all pretty much being able to do Miles in his own right. Mrs. R., too. That sort of leaves me.)

Now I'm really confused. Eephus always called the "first round" Dayton. The Hopper was stuff that was waiting to gain entry into the main event. Dayton was the stuff that was waiting to gain entry into THAT.

Because of this I've got stuff listed everywhere. What are the six in what you call "Daytona"?

Yep. It's the same as that. Dayton gains entry into the Main Event, just like in college basketball.

Daytona - I roll a six-sided die to replace any Main Event categories. These are the six right now in Daytona.

1. Beezle and the Bubs
2. Hot and Cold
3. Miles Davis
4. The Fjords
5. Botany 101
6. The Love Channel

These are the fifteen in the Hopper

Vocal Cords (or chords)
History Channel
Eephus's Fresh Hell
The Cloud
etc.

They're listed here.

I did the two part category staging because it made it better to find songs for a smaller sub-set of categories that were assured of coming up.  Also, new category ideas tended to come in bunches and seemed fairer to chill the new ones to Dayton for a while.

None of the "rules" except for the basic Palooza concept are really documented anywhere.  I just got in a groove and kept it going.  He or she who controls the dice control the rules.

I think the discrepancy was that you put 50 categories in the main event and the original run had 57 (channels and nothing on).

Yeah, I wasn't privy to that until I did all the sorting and saw Eephus's sheet. I think we should be good to go if we can keep coming up with categories. There's still plenty of rolls left with that we've got.
