This swing version by Freddie Slack with Johnny Mercer is a long train ride from Vernon's version.

 
584.  Blur - Under the Westway (I see London)

London's representative in the Britpop wars with a stately ballad that reminds me of "A Whiter Shade of Pale".  It's my favorite post-hiatus song by the band.

The Westway is an elevated freeway in West London. If you've come in from Heathrow, you've probably been on it but not under it.

It is one of my favorite albums by them. "Subway" wasn't on the original album. It was a single that they tacked on to Automatic when they added bonus songs to one of the disc releases. Listen to the original album and see what you think. I think you'll like it.

Call me a colonial but I prefer The Pixies version of "Head On" to the original (most of the time).

When Automatic first came out, I wasn't crazy about the less noisy (for them) direction.  It didn't take long though for it to become a favorite for me as well.

I loved the Pixies version in college, but I think I've changed my allegiance to the JAMC version. 

Plus, it gave us one of the great pop meta references ever from the aughts.

Is there a playlist for the thread? I need to revisit that thread. I haven't been in a punk music mood for awhile but when the mood strikes again, I will be all over that.

I reference my Neil, 1969, 1971 and 1975 countdowns in this thread all the time. Rarely ever about Colonial architecture or colonists, though.

Kidz Bop goes back as far as the first page on this thread. It was loosely described as "music for or by kids of all ages...". It was supposed to be a Kidz Bop/Kidz Jamz/Disney Channel from Sirius XM. Let's have a look see at what their station plays. (If they still have it, that is.) 

Oh my, is it ever huge. It's contemporary hits sung by kids for kids. It's all over Spotify. Just type in "Kidz Bop." Whether it ever should have been a category (I believe I tried to call attention to it, or maybe that was Squeezebox Redux.)

YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED TO VOTE ON KIDZ BOP. 

Kidz Bop was a category that somehow survived the first page of cut-downs and now looms large. We have a category in the Main Event that seems insufferable. It is described as a music channel where contemporary hits are "sung by kids for kids." Sounds like they sing "Old Town Road" and the like for other children. It's really very family-oriented, one would imagine. It's sort of like having Blue's Clues on during a road trip. But do we want something even potentially less engrossing and intelligent than Blue's Clues occupying our head space? This is the question before us. 

That's why we're voting. Vote "yay" or "nay" to the channel. A "nay" vote gets us close to our goal of five votes needed for removal. I assume that ilov80s, simey, and I vote "nay." So there needs to be two more "nay" votes. If there are six "yay" votes, then Kidz Bop rules the day and is a category. 

Go!

I believe Kid's music was one of the categories suggested at krista's dinner party with her mom's friends way back when.

 
I don’t care either way. I do remember when I worked at a record store Dylan’s version of “This Old Man” on some record for children, but don’t think it’s on Spotify.

I have a friend (or maybe had, not really sure) whose kid toured the world with Kidz Bop for a couple of years before he went through puberty and got kicked to the curb.  Kid had real musical talent (not just singing and dancing) but was always a bit of an odd duck.  My son got along with him well but other kids in the neighborhood kind of rolled their eyes at the whole thing.  His dad blamed it on the other kids being jealous - I never felt comfortable enough to tell him that teenage boys weren't jealous of a classmate that performed in front of over-excited 7-year old girls, no matter how many cities he got to visit.  Last I heard, they moved to LA to try to capitalize on the kid's limited fame but nothing has really panned out.  

Anyway, yes, I'm super-familiar with Kidz Bop and my vote is a resounding no.

My vote was nay if it was songs sung by kids. If you haven’t already, edit your dice roll post so people don’t reference it and still think the kids category is on this weekend.

 
Tomorrow we leave for Cape Cod with our convalescing cat in tow, returning next Friday the 15th. I won't be on a real computer very much during that time, so I'll catch up on my picks, the spreadsheet and my playlists when I can. 

I have a bunch of stuff left on my list for Segue Way, so I'll do a blitzkrieg of that on Sunday or whenever I get a chance to do Sunday's picks. 

Since it's somewhat close to midnight my time, I'll make Friday's picks now.

Pretty sure this one actually was my category.

As for kidz, I see it's gone.  I don't recall it being a category from my dinner party and wouldn't expect it was, but I wouldn't be surprised if I pimped it generally.  You might recall, or why would you, that I have an ex-boyfriend-now-dear-friend who has been nominated for four (4!) Grammys in the category, and I adore his music and also think there's some fun in the genre.  I do think we are mostly people who are too old to have kids that might be enamored of it (hi, Eephus!), so probably not the best here.

And JFC it would not be children singing.  I'd rather die.

Yes, it was. I remember complimenting whoever came up with it at the dinner party at the time you wrote the suggestion. 

Kidz Bop went back to the first page. I think Eephus was being cheeky about you suggesting it and was tweaking us. Or maybe not. I really don't know. Everybody has such dry, wry humor (I'm looking at the cereal fruitlooper simey here!) that sometimes I can't tell. Y'all are so earnest, but then devilish...

I only vaguely remember that you had a boyfriend-now-dear-friend who won Grammys writing that sort of music. It sounds very familiar, but it must have slipped my memory. That's really cool. I agree there can be fun in the genre, just not Disney kids singing at other kids. That sounds miserable. Then again, there was Justin and Britney, so...

I actually drafted a song from a kid's album for Lazy Sunday or whatever that category/channel is called. The song I drafted was You are My Sunshine (version 1) by Elizabeth Mitchell.
